CeremoniesRitual/CeremonyWhat do we mean? The term Ceremonies is a western word used to refer to a wide range of activities intraditional cultures - everything from religious activities to shamanic or magical ritu-als. We will be using more specific terminology in the context of this workshop.

Ceremony: Any activity used to commemorate, acknowledge or honor what is.

Ritual: any activity used to bring about a change in what is.

Some of the purposes of ceremony in a traditional culture:Maintaining the cohesion of the societyReminding the members of their roots in the infiniteKeeping the living connected with their ancestorshonoring the rites of passage for individuals and groups

Why Do we perform ceremony in our post-tribal culture?

Examples of ceremonies:Marriage; Naming; Graduation; and, Memorial.

Pipe Ceremony is an honoring ceremony that uses the power of the pipe and ofthe plant spirits to weave connections and bring people together in a space of open-ness and truth.

Sweat Lodge (also called stone lodge or medicine lodge)

How does the sweat lodge work? What needs does it address?

The lodge ceremony represents birth and emerging from the womb - both the womb ofyour mother and of the Great Mother (Earth). The apparent duality between lodge and fire is a powerful force which energizes anddeepens the experience. The orientation of the lodge to the natural setting allows it to be supported by the spir-its of the land.

The puposes for sweat lodge are many, but the come down to a few basics:

Purification: On a purely physical level, the sweat helps to cleanse the body of wastesand open the pores. On a more spiritual level, it releases old toxins and makes roomfor new growth.

Connecting: As the participants enter the sweat lodge together, they are returning tothe womb - together. This space is incredibly intimate and highly charged. This allowsfor greater connection between the participants and with all their spiritual allies andancestors as well.

Gratitude: It is important to feel the great gift we are offered in this ritual and torecieve it fully, which also means offering our gratitude to all those involved. Gratitudefor our life is also an important element of this ceremony. We return to the womb torenew our appreciation for our own birth/life.

Sweat rounds - each time the door of the sweat opens and new rocks are passed in isa round.Honoring - the first round is to call in and honor the Grandfathers and other spiritswho will be helping.purificaion - This is often the most difficult round - sometimes taking more than oneround - as we work to move through any obstacles to realizing our intention.connecting - The is a powerful round - focused on a deepening of existing connec-tions and the cration of new connections.gratitude - giving thanks to all the spirits who have helped us as well as the ancestorsand the embodied humans, the host/ess, the land, etc.

sweat rolespourer - This is the person who sits to the inside of the door and runs the sweat.doorkeeper - This is the person who sits to the outside of the door (last one in) andhelps to keep order and maintain the energy.firekeeper - This is the person who tends the fire, maintaining the balance betweenthe fire and the lodge.participant - This refers to all other participants.

ettiquetteBe respectful - follow the directions of the pourer - communicate with either the pour-er or the doorkeeper if you begin to experience any dificulty. Drink and then pass thewater when it comes to you. Do not pour water on the rocks. This is for the pourer todo.
