Let’s Brainstorm!

How can we help the world to be a better a place?

Goals for 2015:

The MDGs: GOAL 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger

GOAL 2: Achieve universal primary education

GOAL 3: Promote gender equality and empower women

GOAL 4: Reduce child mortality

GOAL 5: Improve maternal and health

GOAL 6: Fight HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases

GOAL 7: Ensure environmental sustainability (Example-WATER)

GOAL 8: Develop a global partnership for development

MDG Explanations are:

The world should work together to help poor countries.

All children should go to elementary school.

Men and women should be equal. Women need more power.

Fewer babies should die.

Mothers should be healthy.

Fight HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases.

The environment should be healthy.

Everyone should have some money and enough food.

The United Nations sets an agenda to help countries improve themselves in these areas.

In September 2000, 189 government leaders from around the world met at a meeting of the United Nations (UN). The leaders decided they wanted to do something to make the world a better place and they agreed to work to help world poverty by the year 2015. They chose 8 goals that every country would work together to achieve. These are called the ‘Millennium Development Goals’ (MDGs). Some companies like Pepsi Cola are working with international development organizations working to help people in need. It funds projects in countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Latin America. Local people run the projects, which target the Millennium Development Goals.

Let’s discuss some problems around the world!

Find a partner and talk! Use the poverty cycle as a guide!

² 800 million people go hungry every day. ² 20% of the world’s population lives on $1 a day. ² 20% of people in the world can’t get clean water. ² 113 million children don’t go to school. ² Around the world there are more than 800 million adults

who can’t read or write.

Ø The MDGs should help reduce poverty and save the world.

DIVIDE THE LIST INTO 2 GROUPS
