He groped his way in the pitch dark- ness through the icy waters, finally find- ing a cabin with a four foot air pocket. He made a make-shift platform and stacked two mattresses together in his attempt to escape the rising water. Okene sat on the mattresses and waited for help. But the thought of being rescued seemed remote. So Okene, a follower of Jesus, started to pray the Psalms: “Oh, God, by your name, save me,” and “e Lord sustains my life.” Okene told reporters, “I started calling on the name of God …. reminiscing on the verses I read before I slept. I read the Bible from Psalms 54 to 92. My wife had sent me the verses to read that night when she called me before I went to bed.” Two-and-a-half days later, Okene was certain the rest of the eleven man crew had drowned and that he would also drown. en he heard the sound of rescuers and started banging on the steel walls of his cabin with a hammer. e Dutch divers who found him couldn’t believe their eyes. He told a Nigerian newspaper, “e rest of my life is not enough to thank God for this won- der. It is incredible.” What a great story on the Word of God and prayer. It raises a couple of good questions. What verses are stored up in your heart right now that can breathe spiritual life into you today and when an emergency arises? May 5th is the National Day of Prayer! Mark your calendars and plan to come to Mountainside for a 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. service. Prayer has been an important part of our country since its beginning. In 1952 a bill was passed for the Presi-dent to set aside a day (other than Sunday) each year for a National Day of Prayer. In 1988 President Reagan signed the bill to establish the first Thursday in May as the date for the annual observance of the National Day of Prayer. This year's theme is Wake Up, America! Let's join the millions of others across our land humbly raising our voices in prayer to seek God's wisdom, guidance, and His grace upon us.

Ignite!

On the last Monday of every month, our MUMC youth gather in fellowship at Roller Skate City, from 6 to 8 pm, for Christian Music Night. As with any skill, it can be a challenge to learn to roller skate, but I am so proud of many in our group that have used this opportunity to brave the skate. We welcome all family members and have many levels of skaters in our group. With a generally emp-

ty rink to play on, both learning and challenging other top skaters to a race, is easy and fun. We invite all youth to join us for some great food, fun and fellowship as well as adults who would like to volunteer as chaperone and race us on the skate rink! Skating not required! Fun to be expected! See you there! Contact Tifani at (505) 417-6309 for more information.

It is always an accom-plishment to complete each level of academia, and it is our pleasure to announce that one of our own is graduat-ing with her GED this month! At 7pm on May 11th, Hannah Megan Barrett Walter will join friends and family at the UNM Valencia Campus in Los Lunas for commencement. We will be hosting a recep-tion on the 14th here in the MAC from 3 pm to 5 pm to celebrate Hannah and her successful comple-tion of this chapter in her journey, and the start of a new one. Hannah plans to pursue her bachelor's degree in communicative disorders at CNM, start-ing this fall semester. She states "I am truly thankful for my Aunt Susan, Uncle Laney, Cousin Cari, and her husband Jeff, and Cassidy Burleson my teacher for all the support encouragement and help they have done for me in the past two years. They are my world and I couldn't thank them enough". Help us in congratulating Hannah when you see her!

Congratulations Hannah

Our Easter program was not only extremely special but also quite diff erent as we combined an fun Children's Church, with an exceptional Easter Egg Hunt, and fi nally with the most individual-ized and unique Easter perfor-mance than we have ever had.

In Children's Church, the children were taught the mean-ing of Easter and how much God and his son sacrifi ced for our eternal spiritual health. Th e Easter Egg Hunt provided a much needed excuse for the kids to run,

play, and have the childlike fun that we all miss as adults. Th eir excitement was very con-tagious!

Finally, our Easter Program started with a sin-cere and humorous video of some members of our congregation sharing their favorite memories of Easter. Th ey shared heartfelt feelings about what Easter means to them, with our children voicing candy as a HUGE motivator! We ended with a two part performance of our youth acting out their own play on the true meaning of Easter.

What a lively bunny we had. Th ank you Nicky Moore! Th e chil-

dren then joined in on the cut-est and most beautiful rendition of "Jesus Loves Me" I have ever heard.

For a program such as this Easter season to go off so smoothly and beautifully, had to be truly blessed by God. I think all the amazing volunteers who contributed literal hours of their free time to help the youth practice,

help the children learn the lines, and of course helping to fi ll and hide the Easter Eggs. Tifani Vincent and I, send out a heartfelt thank you to these wonderful vol-unteers with the very true sentiment that these pro-grams would never be able to happen without them.

Events like the Talent Show take hours of hard work, menial work, and even tedious work.  However, we're constantly graced by God's hand in all of our labor. I say this in

all sincerity as I got to listen to my own daugh-ter sing a well known children's song, know-ing that she was shaking as she did it. I watched dozens of people get up on that stage, knowing they were afraid and

nervous and taking the microphone into their hand anyway. Facing their fears, living their dreams, and blessing others with their talents

were just some of the things our amazing contestants did. Over seventy people from our congregation and com-munity attended this magnificent event and had nothing but posi-tive words and praises

come from their mouths. Our talent included fourteen acts of both members of MUMC and guests from the community. Tifani

and I want to person-ally thank each and every individual who showed up to perform, each person from the community and con-gregation that came to support this event, and finally, each volunteer who helped accomplish the first
