POTENTATE “2012” ROBERT ST. JACQUES

Shriners Visitation. Events coming up in May are the Pyramid Shriners Visitation on the 4th, 5th and the 6th. The Clowns Motorcycle Poker Run on the 6th. The Montreal Karnak Shriners Visi-tation on the 11th, 12th and the 13th. The White Mountain Shrine Club on the 15th and Grand Lodge on the 18th & 19th. The meet-ing with Rainbow, date to be determined and the Finance Meeting on the 21st. The Tunis Shriners Visitation in Ottawa on the 25th, 26th and 27th. I hope you all attend the coming attraction of the Mystery Play and Dinner that we are going to have at Bektash on June 2nd. This will be another great event that we have planned for this year. The cost of tickets will be $35 per person. The plot of the play is that it happens on an ocean liner crossing the English Channel in 1923. It is a mystery with the addition of comedy. Please see page 29 of the Bektash News for additional infor-mation. Mick and Susan Pinard are the Chairpersons of this fun to be event. There is a list in the Bektash News on page 23 of all the new Shriners created at the Spring Ceremonial. When you see them, show them how much fun we have doing all that we do for our kids and how it feels to belong to our big family. Invite them and their Ladies to your Unit and Club meetings so that you show them what you do to have fun and how they could participate in that same fun. Just a reminder in reference to the June Stated Meeting, There will be a cookout put on by the Bektash Stewards. The ladies are invited. We are attempting to get a guest speaker. We will also have a ribbon cutting ceremony for Lady Linda's Gazebo Project that same night. Please never forget, we are "Shriners, Keep-ing An Eye On Our Kids". Yours in the faith

Ill. Bob St Jacques

April has been a great month. We had the Spring Ceremonial in conjunction with the Hobo Dinner. I got to meet Logan and his family. He is the young man who inspired Lady Mary's project. This will be the high-light of my year as Potentate. There isn't anyone that has met this young man and has not instantly fallen in love with him. It makes you understand why Lady Mary selected this as her Potentate's Lady Pro-ject. I don't believe anyone can meet him and not wish the best for him. The Hobo Dinner was a great success. We had 185 in attendance. We all had a great time, great conversation, met with old friends and made new ones. The skits put on by the Clowns were very entertaining to those of all ages. My favorite was "The Ugly Man Contest" which ended with a surprise for me. My Clown make up ses-sion was loads of fun. Logan and his brother watched in awe as I turned into a Clown. They could not believe their eyes as the transition went from a plain faced indi-vidual to an Auguste Clown. It was great to see Logan laughing so much. I hope that we can continue to do more of these fun events in the future. For those of you that did not attend you surely missed a great time. April ended with the Rhode Island

"Fez"tival of Trees

Thank you to all who donated to or worked at the 2011 "Fez"tival of Trees.

Your dedication and hard work are truly appreciated.

Plans have already begun for the 2012 "Fez"tival of Trees. We are in need of

additional committee members, especially someone who would like to learn

the Public Relations side of the committee. Mal Clapp has been doing a won-

derful job for many years and would like to train his replacement in 2012. If

you are interested in this important position please contact me at 603/819-

8538.

Beginning in 2012 we will add fully decorated artificial wreaths. The wreaths

can be of any size or design. They will be judged and auctioned off just like

the mini trees.

The next meeting of the "Fez"tival committee is on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at

7:00pm at the Shrine Center.

Thank you all again for your support this year, we did great!

WHEN THE STARS CAME OUT IN SCOTTSDALEWHEN THE STARS CAME OUT IN SCOTTSDALEWHEN THE STARS CAME OUT IN SCOTTSDALEWHEN THE STARS CAME OUT IN SCOTTSDALE

When the stars came out in Scottsdale the OMERS took hospitality to a whole new level.

Yachtsmen joined together to share ideas and join in all the revel. The weekend event brought sixteen in all,

along with their ladies, who answer the call. Uniforms of white, stripes of red, yellow and green represented

international, for this midwinter scene. Not a moment was lost as the shuttle left at two,

off to the mountains, a spectacular view. A thrilling ride, Apache Trail raised some hair.

Desert flora and fauna, and Camel Back so rare. Dolly the sternwheeler all hands on board, cruised the canyon where wild eagles soar.

Tortilla Flats, dollars on the wall, hop up on the saddle order something tall.

Saturday morning hospitality at nine, downtown shopping the ladies did just fine.

Dinner at six, a sumptuous banquet was served with luscious desert, a treat well deserved.

Bridge meeting at 8:30, The Yachtsmen wore their Fez. Election of new officers then later on some biz.

Assembled on the patio a view of Camel Back Lake. The ladies were served breakfast,

new friendships on the make. The Yachtsmen closed their meetings headed

home to share this tale of visiting with their brothers as the stars

came out in Scottsdale.

MESSAGE FROM THE IMPERIAL POTENTATE

Greetings my fellow Nobles,

April 2012 I hope everyone had a nice Easter and start to Pass-over! I started off the month of March at the Central States Shrine Association in Topeka, Kan., which is also the association my temple, El Jebel, belongs to. We had great attendance – 250 Nobles from Kansas, Iowa, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, Nebraska and Arkansas. As always, it was a perfect opportunity to see old friends and make new ones as well.

My next stop was Shriners International headquarters in Tampa, Fla., for the sports committee, Assistant Rabban and Oriental Guide seminars. The sports committee seminar was led by Imperial Sir Dale Stauss and we were treated to some interesting and humorous NFL stories from Harold Richardson, executive director of the East-West Shrine Game®. Toward the end of the seminar, Justin McFatridge, a patient ambassador from Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Tampa gave an inspirational talk about the positive impact our philanthropy has made on his life. At the Oriental Guide and Assistant Rabban Seminars, temple officers exchanged ideas on Divan planning, risk management, fundraising, membership and budgets. I was extremely pleased to see a great turnout of Nobles and Ladies at both seminars. During my time at headquarters, I also attended the international development com-mittee meeting. We are excited about fraternity members in Japan’s interest in forming a new temple and the possibility of adding the Agila Shriners of Mindanao, The Philippines, as our 195th temple. Past Imperial Potentate Nick Thomas and the rest of the committee members have done a commendable job expanding our frater-nity overseas. While in Florida, I also had the opportunity to visit both Sahib Shriners of Sarasota and Egypt Shriners of Tampa. Both temples were gracious hosts and gave generous donations to Patty’s fundraising program, “Stepping Forward Toward a Brighter Future.”

May 2012 _ 41

In Orlando, I participated in the 4th annual Sam Swope Charity Motorcycle Ride. The ride went from the Bahia Shriners temple to the Seminole Harley Davidson Shop in Sanford, Fla. Despite the rainy conditions, more than 500 people braved the 40-mile ride. The event raised more than $150,000 for the health care system and Noble Swope matched that figure, bringing the total donation to $304,000. What makes our fraternity so unique and special are kind and selfless individuals like Noble Swope. Later in the month I attended meetings of the Northeast Shrine Association in Ban-gor, Maine, and the South Atlantic Shrine Association in Greenwood, S.C. Thanks to Illustrious Sir Larry Herson, who grew up with Stephen King in Maine, I had the opportunity to see the famous author’s house. The South Atlantic Shrine Associa-tion meeting was held at the Greenwood Shrine Club, which is a beautiful facility right on the lake. I would like to thank both the Anah and Hejaz Shriners for their hospitality and for hosting both of these important meetings. After visiting the Springfield hospital last month, I can now officially say I’ve been to all 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children. Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown was also at the hospital during my visit. It was great to meet him and see how impressed he is with our philanthropy. In addition, I visited our Cincinnati hospital for the strategic assessment task force meeting. The task force has done an outstanding job and I’m excited about the ideas they have for the future of our health care system. Lastly, I attended the Shrine Directors Association (SDA) in San Antonio, Texas. Three hundred Nobles attended and Imperial Sirs Dale Stauss, Jerry Gantt, Jeffrey Sowder and James Smith all volunteered to participate in numerous stunts that are used in the “Second Section” of initiation. The SDA has created a book of 80 to 90 skits for temples to utilize and also has innovative ideas to recruit new members. I encourage of all you to support this terrific organization so we can continue to find more ways to have fun in the Shrine. “Remember Why You Became a Shriner!” Yours in the Faith,

Michael G. Severe

SHRINERS INTERNATIONAL FIRST LINE SIGNERS PIN

August 30, 2011 To: All Potentates and Chief Rabbans As you know, this Imperial year, Shriners International is celebrating its 1401 Anniversary and our new Membership +1 pin is now available for all top line signers. Hopefully, your temple is working hard to increase its membership. One of these pins is being sent to every new Shriner during the 2011-12 Imperial year. Additionally, every top line signer is entitled to receive this limited edition pin. Our Office of Membership Development in Tampa will include one with every new member's welcome letter which is mailed from that office. When submitting the creation reports to Headquar-ters, your Recorder should indicate the number of top line signers for that class. The appropriate number of pins will then be mailed to the Recorder's office for distribution to eligible Nobles. You might want to present them at a temple meeting or other event that will recognize these Nobles for helping to promote membership in our great fraternity. If you prefer to have us mail the pin directly to the top line signers, please have your re-corder send an electronic list with their name and address to membership @ shrinenet.org. If we can assist you in any way, please contact our Office of Membership Development at 813.281.8101 or email: [email protected].

Yours in the Faith,

MIKE SEVERE

The 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children have provided lifesaving and life-changing medical care to more than 800,000 children, regardless of their ability to pay. The money to provide these needed services at 22 hospitals comes from many sources: community donations; fundraising events; investment income; and support from the Shriners Inter-national. As health care costs increase, Shriners Hospitals needs your help, more than ever, to continue to provide more specialized care, offer medical education and conduct more research. Too many people believe that if they cannot donate or leave a large sum or money, their gift will not count. Every contribution helps. In order to encourage donors to contribute to Shriners Hospitals for Children, the HUNDRED MILLION DOLLAR CLUB was es-tablished in 1972. The club is named for its goal of adding 100 million dollars to the endowment fund through gifts or bequests of $100 or more.

There are three ways to become a member of the 100 Million Dollar Club: (1) By contributing $100 or more to Shriners Hospi-tals for Children; (2) By having your will include a bequest of $100 or more to Shriners Hospitals for Children; or (3) By adding a provision to an existing will leaving $100 or more to Shriners Hospitals for Children. Shriners. Please fill out the form on the right and send your contribution to Bektash Shriner's Recorder Joel Weinstein.

Each donor receives a handsome 100 Million Dollar Club certifi-cate. By contributing $100, you can feel like a million, knowing that you have helped to ensure that Shriners Hospitals for Chil-dren will be able to continue helping children in the years to come.
