    Britain free of recession:SurveyLONDON: A record recovery in Britains busi-ness confidence signals that the countrysrecession is at an end, an industry body heresaid yesterday.

    Optimism among professionals moved to

    its highest level for two years in the currentthird quarter, according to research by theInstitute of Chartered Accountants in Englandand Wales (ICAEW).

    The confidence measure jumped from mi-nus 28.2 to 4.8, the largest quarterly improve-ment since the survey began in 2003.

    The groups third quarter survey suggeststhat the UK recession is at an end, said ICAEWchief executive Michael Izza.

    While there is no doubt that the UK econ-omy is on its way to recovery, we shouldntunderestimate the challenges ahead for busi-nesses, he added in a statement.

    Toyota to conduct biggestrecall yet in ChinaTOKYO: Japans Toyota Motor Co an-nounced yesterday its biggest ever recallin China, affecting about 688,000 vehicles,due to a defect in the electric windowsystem.

    The recall covers four sedan models the Camry, Yaris, Corolla and Vios pro-duced in China by two joint venture firms

    between May 2006 and December 2008, aToyota spokeswoman said.

    Excessive lubricant used in the elec-tronic controls may interfere with theopening and closing of windows or causeshort circuits, she said.

    No injuries have been reported due tothe defect, she said. AFP

    Taiwan jobless rate hitsrecord highTAIPEI: Taiwans unemployment rate in Julyhit a record high of 6.07% largely due to anincrease in first-time jobseekers during the

    graduation season, the government saidyesterday.

    The July figure is up from 5.94% recordedin June, the directorate general of budget, ac-counting and statistics said.

    On a seasonally adjusted basis, unemploy-ment in July rose to 6.01%, up from 5.91%from the previous month, the agency said.

    In July, the number of unemployed peopletotalled 663,000, up 16,000 from June, includ-ing a rise of 14,000 first-time jobseekers, itsaid. AFP

    Asia gains lift world stocksto 10-month highHONGKONG: Asian stocks jumped morethan 2% yesterday, lifting world shares toa 10-month high, after upbeat US hous-ing data and optimistic comments fromFederal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernankespurred buying of riskier assets.

    European shares were set to pushhigher at the start, with futures on theDow Jones Eurostoxx 50 index up 0.8% inearly trade.

    Japans Nikkei average jumped 3.3%,Hongkongs Hang Seng was up 1.9%, whilethe Shanghai Composite edged up 0.3% inchoppy trade. AFP
