Welcome to the September edition of the Stamford Scene. I cannot believe we are so far into the year and we actually have some clients

promoting Christmas – I know, I know, it is still another 4 months away – but there is nothing like being prepared. I like to wait until at least 20th December before I panic....

We have lots of interesting information included in this edition – we have a look inside Trinity Methodist Church on Barn Hill and also a look at the Eventus innovation centre in Market Deeping. Eventus is a new, contemporary work-space style centre with all the latest technology, ideal for small businesses wanting to be more professional, take the next step and have the benefit of support and networking opportunities – see pages 12-14 for more details.

We all try to be green by doing our bit, but if you would like to do more then turn to pages 48 & 49 and see some real ECO products in action. If you are interested in what’s on, there is a complete rundown of events at both The Arts Centre and the Corn Exchange, plus a preview to the Joe Pasquale show on October 3rd (page 11).

We have interviews with local gardener, Nick Hamilton, from Barnsdale Garden Centre and local travel expert, Steve Daykin of Inspirational Travel. All this plus book reviews, charity updates, finance and health.

I hope you enjoy this issue, please let me know if you have any events you would like me help promote for you, just email [email protected] the read

Retirement talk. The government is abolishing the rule forcing pensioners when to purchase an Annuity. In doing so, it will re-write the rules governing buying a pension - but is it right for you?

Currently, you can use your pension fund to buy a flexible income each year. But because your fund remains invested and as there is no guarantee to future performance and value, this Drawdown arrangement is known as an unsecured pension (USP). Or you may buy a set lifetime’s income (an Annuity). At age 75 – age 77 from 22 April 2010 to 06 April 2011 – people in Drawdown must move to alternatively secured pension (ASP).

A main difference between USP and ASP is that if someone dies under USP there is a 35% charge on drawn down funds whereas under ASP the charge rises to an eye watering 82%. Under the proposed new rules this charge will move to 55%. However, there are other important differences. Drawdown income is limited according to the annual income that may be bought by an Annuity. The maximum that can be taken in any one year is 120% of what the same pension fund would have bought as an Annuity. A danger is that poor investment returns combined with drawing too much income early in retirement means that when it comes to buying an Annuity later on, the fund is too

small to live off. An Annuity provides a set income for life. Your money is invested (in low-risk bonds, gilts etc), but low interest rates and increasing life expectancy mean Annuity rates are at an all-time low. But because to beat Annuity rates Drawdown money may still be exposed to riskier investments, it represents a riskier option. However, Drawdown could buy not only more pension but also valuable time before Annuity rates improve. Those in Drawdown avoid being locked into a poor Annuity rate, they retain control over their income and investments, and gain an opportunity to grow their pension fund further before they buy an Annuity. Investing in funds, shares and so on might also deliver higher returns.

However, the fact remains that Drawdown is potentially an expensive and complex proposition and presents a risk for those who have enough funds to consider Drawdown but not quite enough money to afford to make any mistakes. If you are about to enter retirement, or wish to plan for it, we offer a completely Independent perspective. A Hospice is a place where professional specialist care is administered to patients who are suffering from a life-threatening illness such as cancer, motor neurone disease and HIV. Over the years many people who are living with a life-threatening illness have felt isolated, frightened and in unnecessary pain. The Hospice movement seeks to provide personalised care in a homely, friendly atmosphere which may not always be possible in a busy hospital ward.

All around the country Hospices have been established to fulfil this need and are largely funded by the generosity of the public.

St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice is no exception with more than £2.4 Million of the care costs being paid for by donations from individuals, groups, businesses and others.

The care at St Barnabas Hospice is provided throughout Lincolnshire FREE OF CHARGE in a number of ways. St Barnabas are developing their Hospice at Home service to encompass the whole county, making sure that all patients with life limiting illnesses have the same standard of quality hospice care that they deserve. They now want to bring these services to your corner of Lincolnshire, and that means they are coming to Stamford, Bourne and the surrounding villages.

Hospice at Home, with its team of nursing staff, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, complementary therapists and community welfare support officers complements the existing community services in supporting patients and their families who choose to be cared for at home. Volunteers can help with household activities such as shopping, dog walking and sitting with the patients allowing the carer time to go out or even have a sleep knowing their loved one is being cared for. Community Fundraiser Hannah Thompson explains how you can get involved;

“By raising awareness and funds for our charity we can benefit people living in the Stamford and Bourne area, who have life limiting illnesses – help us to help them”

JOE PASQUALE- ESP AUTUMN TOUR ‘EXTRA SENSORY PASQUALE’

With the passing of the Summer Solstice, it is now perhaps time to tune into your psychic powers, and who better to help you than comedian Joe Pasquale. Joe, will embark on his ESP – Extra Sensory Pasquale tour of the UK on 1st October 2010 taking in 33 towns and cities around the UK and includes Stamford Corn Exchange on the 3rd October. joe commented “I’ve always been quite intrigued by that sort of thing, and the way mind readers use it – but I really just take the mick out of it, and people love it. To be honest it’s not something I really believe in, although when I was in the Scouts we used to go around collecting jumble and we got a lava lamp and a Ouija Board from one lot. Me and my mate Kevin and some others went into a church and contacted a ghost called Colin, which was a bit spooky, but we don’t know if it was real or just somebody pushing the board around! We quickly got rid of the board and put it back in the jumble.”

EXTRA SENSORY PASQUALE is a show for all the family, even those separated at birth who have now found each other after many years and then realised they can’t stand each other!

And just to confirm the suitability of the show - here’s a quote from eminent Austrian psychic,

Professor Alf Wiedersehn, “I saw Joe in TK Max - Discussing the ESP tour JLegendary Stuff.”

They offer the opportunity to take the next step in an affordable, professional manner. Extra support and networking opportunities will be available

Interview with Nick Hamilton from Barnsdale Gardens

How did you first get into gardening? I have been bought up with it – I suppose it’s in my blood, because for as long as I can remember I have been dabbling with plants and veg.

Who is your main influence? Even though he died about 14 years ago the way my father gardened is still my main influence.

What cardinal rules of gardening did you Father instill in you? In gardening very rarely do things go to plan, so if at first you don’t succeed then try and try again, but remember not everything will grow in any one situation.

What is you all time favourite plant/flower? Penstemon – with their long flowering period and varied range of different, but beautiful, flowers and with little personal input, they are such good value for money.

Page 17: The_Stamford_Scene_September

The Scene 01780 783613 [email protected] 17

What is your favourite season in the garden and why? I like all the seasons for varying reasons, but if pushed I suppose the spring is my favourite as everything looks so fresh and pure which not only lifts the heart after winter but also inspires all gardeners back into the garden.

What are the 3 things you can’t live without? My family and friends (who else can you get to work for free these days!); my season ticket for the Spurs, which is my only vice these days and Barnsdale – I really can’t think of a better place to be!

What was your last holiday destination? Kenya, 3 years ago. Went on a 3 day safari, which was the most magical thing I have ever done.

What is the last film you watched and how did you rate it? Inglorious Basterds – thought it was great and some of the acting very deserving of the Oscar nominations.

Where is your favourite place to eat? Mr Pangs in Stamford – love the

excellent food and excellent friendly staff and environment.

What are your hobbies? Going to the football, music and, of course, gardening.

What is your proudest moment? I have a proudest moment every day when visitors either comment on how fantastic the gardens and nursery are and what a brilliant job we are doing keeping it going and developing it, as well as when told how much they loved and miss my dad.

One last word…Marmite, love it or hate it Hate itCheese and biscuits or sweet dessert Cheese and biscuits, unless its pavlova Shower or bath ShowerCash or card CashCat or dog Love bothCountry or city Country, but like the buzz of cities in very small doses.

It has been said that Stamford is the finest stone town in England. Its history goes back a long way and much of that is visible today in the fine buildings and monuments that still exist. Trinity Methodist Church is situated within the towns Conservation Area and Barn Hill is one of the most attractive streets in Stamford. The first Methodist Church to be built in Stamford was at the rear of No 10 Barn Hill and opened in 1803. In 1882, No 11 Barn Hill was purchased and then demolished to make way for a new church building in front of the old one. The new church, which opened in November 1886, was substantially built of local stone, but one feature which could not be afforded was a spire, though the base was constructed. The buildings were refurbished in 2005 to provide improved facilities and the foyer was opened up to form

a multi-purpose area in which is “The Well” fair trade & coffee shop, this is open Wednesday – Friday 10-4pm and Saturdays 9.15 – 12.15pm. This forms part of

the Churches mission to the people of Stamford, and is also part of their mission to the poorest people in the world by supporting fair trade. Profits from the shop are used to promote the mission work of the church. The refurbishment was given an award by the Stamford CivicSociety in recognition of the imaginative renovation and high standard of workmanship’ Much work is done in the community outside the Church and this is to be extended to include a Youth Outreach Worker (YOW), to be employed in the near future. The YOW will aim to meet the needs of

young people in Stamford by engaging with them and supporting them to discover their strengths and values and build confidence in themselves.

A word from the Minister

I like to think of the Methodist Church as an

inside out church, rooting what we do in worship and prayer and

putting it into action out in the world. We do so

alongside our friends and fellow Christians in the other

churches of Stamford. Feel free to join us sometime.

The Methodist Movement began with a challenge to ‘Go not only to those who need you, but

also to those who need you most.’ (The words of Rev John Wesley,

18th century founder of Methodism).

Andy Fyall (Rev)

Minister, Trinity Methodist Church, Stamford

There are extensive halls and rooms that are in use 7 days a week with hundreds of people using the facilities that include 3 kitchens, 2 lounges and 2 halls. All rooms are available for hire, and are open to all organisations and groups. Enquiries should be directed to Laura Main on 01780 764338 or email [email protected].

The Church is also becoming very popular concert venue for many local amateur and professional performers and on the 27th November Maria Fidelis Gospel Choir, winners of the BBC 2010 Choir of the Year Competition, will be performing. The concert starts at 7.30pm, tickets are £10 and can be obtained from the Arts Centre, Stamford.

How long have you been involved in travel?

I started work at Thomas Cook way back when I was just 18 so have now done nearly 30 years!! The rest of the team at Inspirational Travel have also averaged over 20 years each giving us plenty of experience!

What are the current most popular destinations for long haul travellers?

We are selling places like The Maldives and Mauritius well, particularly for honeymooners or escapists, and then Kenya has had a bit of a resurgence and of course South Africa is very much in vogue following the World Cup. Two-centre itineraries also prove very popular whereby we offer the excitement of a safari and some exploration combined with relaxation and pampering at an exotic beach resort. Combinations such as South Africa combined with Mauritius and Kenya or Tanzania combined with Zanzibar work very well with romance and excitement all rolled into one superb itinerary! We have also done a few weddings recently in South Africa, including one that actually took place in the bush at a safari lodge with wildlife wandering past the proceedings as natural invited guests!!

How can long haul be child friendly?

The key thing when travelling with children is to try and avoid destinations that have a massive time difference to ours. We can then organise lots of exciting and interesting things for families includ-ing safaris with their own rangers, walking with Maasai warriors, cultural visits to local villages with involvement in activities with local children such as a game of football, and then lots of exciting activi-ties such as horse-riding, sailing, cycling, fishing and so on. We also have a lot of properties that run very professional kid’s clubs so that parents can have quality adult-time and simply relax.

What makes IT different from high street travel agents?

A travel agent is a retailer selling lots of operators products whereas we are a licensed tour opera-tor constructing our own holidays - I guess the easiest analogy is that we are like a car manufacturer making and selling our own cars as opposed to a showroom selling every make and model!. Being tailor-made specialists means we effectively start with a blank canvas with each customer and create a bespoke itinerary for them. We are specialists in the areas that we sell and therefore have a depth of knowledge in these areas that is difficult to beat.

Considering our economic climate, what destinations are giving travellers the best value for money right now?

The world is in recession, not just the UK and thankfully the Pound is strengthening against most major currencies and this really helps us all and we are now seeing far more competitive prices. Many of our properties are putting out superb offers and airlines are also now reacting as they need to fill air-craft. We therefore have offers available to most of our destinations so our advice is to give us a call and we will come up with some very competitive and exciting ideas! For example we currently have some great deals to places like Mauritius and The Maldives with prices for 7 nights at 5-star resorts from around £1,200 per person, which is excellent value.

ReikiReiki, pronounced Ray-Key, is an ancient Japanese technique involving the laying on of hands for natural healing. The definition of the word Reiki is universal life force energy. What the Chinese call Qi and the Sanskrit’s call Prana. It is believed that Reiki was first used by Tibetan Buddhist monks and was rediscovered in the 1800’s by Dr Mikao Usui, a Christian minister working in Japan. It was then brought over to the West in the 1900’s. Reiki healing is a safe non intrusive healing technique where Reiki, spiritual energy, flows through a person’s hands. There is no pressure, manipulation or massage and as the energy flows into the recipient it helps to balance, heal and harmonise all aspects of the person, body, mind, spirit and emotion.

It is hard to describe exactly what a treatment will feel like as every single person is affected in a different way. Reiki cannot cure diseases or illness however it can help in the following ways:• Relieve pain, physical and emotional• Accelerate natural healing• Aid the detoxification process of the body• Induce a state of deep relaxation• Dissolve energy blockages in the body• Release stored emotions• Release tension and negative stress

Reiki is the simplest and easiest holistic healing method available to us. It can’t be learned in the conventional sense e.g. reading books or attending a lecture. You have to take part in an attunement where you become initiated into the Reiki energy by a qualified Reiki master who has been taught how to carry out the process, so you then become a channel for Reiki. There are a few qualified Reiki Masters in the Peterborough area who are very good and again it is personal preference when deciding who you would like to see for a treatment or an attunement.

1.Preheat the oven to 180 0C/ 350 F/ gas mark 4. Heat the milk slowly with the onion and the nutmeg, then remove the onion.

2. Melt the butter and stir in the flour, then gradually add the milk, take off the heat, whisking until smooth.

3. Return to the heat and stir until the sauce boils and thickens. Stop cooking and add the mustard, three-quarters of the cheese and finally the egg yolks. Add salt and pepper.

4. Generously butter 6 teacups or ramekins.

5. Whisk the egg whites until stiff, and fold into the cheese mixture. Spoon in to the cups to fill 2/3 full. Stand the cups in a roasting tin of boiling water and bake for 15 minutes or until the mixture is set. Allow cool - they will sink quite a lot but don’t panic.

6. Run a knife round the souffles to loosen them. Turn them out on to your hand, giving the cups a sharp jerk. Put them upside down on a serving dish.

7. Twenty minutes before serving, sprinkle the remaining cheese on top. Season the cream with salt and pepper and pour all over the souffles, coating them completely. Put the dish into a hot oven 220, 425 or gas mark 7, for 10 minutes or until the souffle tops are pale gold. Serve fast before they sink!

TWICE BAKED ROQUEFORT SOUFFLE

then re-baked at the last minute so great for a dinner party or simply for a

Bourne bungalow receives energy saving refit

Eco Building Products working with FE Peacock

and Lark Energy, has reduced the CO2

emissions of a bungalow in Bourne, by retrofitting it with a range of energy

saving and renewable energy technologies.

The work included installation of a solar

thermal hot water system, a mechanical ventilation and heat recovery system, 1kw Photovoltaic panels,

floor insulation and a water saving bathroom

suite.

Solar Power installation at Lark Energy’s head office

Lark Energy has just completed a 10 kilowatt photovoltaic solar panel system installation on its offices at Bourne. Solar electricity systems use photovoltaic (PV) cells to capture the sun’s energy. The cells convert the sunlight into electricity, which can be used to run household appliances and lighting. The newly introduced Feed in tariff scheme allows the owner to claim money from the Government for the generation of the electricity, as well as enjoying cheaper electricity for the property. The completed PV array is now providing power for the Group’s offices, helping to reduce energy costs and CO2 emissions. It also provides a reference site to demonstrate the potential of PV to Lark Energy’s partners and clients. The whole PV system was supplied by local company, Eco Building Products Ltd in Market Deeping. For further information visit

other energy saving projects contact Ian

Greenfield at Eco Building Products on

It is estimated that it will result in

energy savings of over

50%
