It is a seaport, located on the northern fringe of the Thermaic Gulf. Thessaloniki was founded in 315 BC by Cassander of Macedon and has a history of about 2,300 years. Being an important metropolis for the Romans, it was also the wealthiest and second largest city of the Byzantine Empire, which is still reflected in numerous considerable Byzantine monuments which are today a UNESCO World Heritage Site: Paleochristian and Byzantine monuments of Thessaloniki. Roman, Ottoman and Sephardic Jewish structures further add to the historical richness of the Mediterranean metropolis. Another UNESCO World Heritage Site is the Old Town (Upper Town) “Ano Poli”, a district located in Thessaloniki’s north. It was spared by the great fire in 1917 and thus is Thessaloniki’s most traditional part of the city, still featuring small stone paved streets, old squares and homes featuring old Greek and Ottoman architecture. Ano Poli is also the highest point in Thessaloniki, where you find the city’s acropolis, the Byzantine fort, the Heptapyrgion (The Castle of Thessaloniki) and many of the city’s remaining walls. Providing a clear day, you can see Mount Olympus, which is located about 60 miles (100 km) southwest. Cruise Ship Pier Location Cruise ships dock in the main port of Thessaloniki. It’s an easy walking distance to the town center. Leave the cruise terminal and turn right. It’s a walk along the waterfront.
