CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Introduction:
Many technology implementations are nowadays used helpful tools for the
business world. Besides computer software mobile applications are considers as more
important and innovative resources. The population in Pakistan is growing from year
to year. It gives opportunities to the restaurant industries to develop their business.
The growing number of restaurants makes restaurant development more competitive.
Therefore, all restaurants keep improving their quality of service one of the services
is delivery order. !elivery order service offered by a number of restaurants is by
making order through mobile phone. Making orders through phone calling, short
messages, or even website does not give order status information in real time to its
customer. Moreover, customers can not see their order history which has been done
before. "owadays, mobile phone is not used for calling or #ms only, many mobile
phones also provide application that support people daily activities developers
decided to create an ordering food application with $ndroid %# platform named
&Takeaway Tracking #ystem 'android and web application(). This application gives
restaurant list information with provides some features such new order reception,
order status, e*it in main home screen with +oogle map $PI service .$ Takeaway
Tracking system is referred to as a set of detail methods that is being used in handling
the ordering process.
Takeaway tracking system 'android and web application( is an android
application which can also run on web browser having an auto tracking ability to track
the user address at any location and any time. It is basically built for the users
convenient and provides tools of place food orders who want to enoy their food at
home. This application also improves the performance of delivering food orders in
restaurants. The preorder and postpaid payments facility would be available for users.

The confirmation only to confirm that the order has been recorded and that
it is being transferred to the restaurant. This confirmation is from the ordering service,
not from the restaurant. In any event, if the restaurant wants to contact the customer,
the restaurant employee must call him on the phone. 0estaurants receive orders not
directly from customers but through a third party, in this case, the online food

ordering service. By using this service, the restaurant has some benefits as follows/
The application of the restaurant is professionally set up by the online
ordering service company in a consistent way, so that customers can easily choose
their favorite foods. 0eduction of the amount of work the employee has on receiving
orders directly from customers per telephone. The restaurant is simply listed on the
1ebsite of online food ordering service, which is well advertised to the market. +ood
restaurants with high reputations will be presented by good ratings. It is obvious that
takeaway tracking system service is helpful. 2owever, there are still some
inconveniences in the process. 1hen finishing the order, the customer does not know
how long it will take to have food delivered. 2e ust receives only the confirmation
from the ordering service that confirming that the order has been made. %therwise, he
must contact the restaurant directly if he wants to get more information. 3urthermore,
transferring orders by fa* or email does not always run smoothly/ paper am by the
fa* machine, quiet fa* signal, late arriving email, etc. can possibly occur.
1.2 Problem Statement:
The growing number of restaurants makes restaurant development more
competitive. Therefore, all restaurants keep improving their quality of service one of

development, some popular restaurants offered website as a choice for making orders
in online mode.

It is developed to manage ordering activities in fast food restaurant. It helps to
record customer submitted orders. The system should cover the following
functions in order to support the restaurant6s business process for achieving
the obectives/
To allow the customer to make order, view order and make changes before
submitting their order and allow them make payment through post payment.
To provide interface as user centric.
To prevent interface that shows customers6 orders detail to front5end and
0eception for delivering customers6 orders and Tracking the customers

favorites foods, then complete the order process and wait for the delivery.

billion apps have been downloaded. $t the same time, Dyologic also estimated that
the total mobile applications on four popular platforms are about ;.E million and that
there are currently >>,>: publishers. More and more mobile applications are
downloaded and uploaded daily. -sers have now become acquainted with this type of
software/ the mobile app.
!ue to the mobility and the ability for calculating, mobile apps on mobile
devices seem to be very helpful in everyday life. 3urthermore, when integrating with
modern online services, mobile apps have the potential to be a useful and powerful
resource for every business.

The vendors produce these phones together with the supplied applications

%n the other hand, modern phones are often delivered with powerful
hardware they normally run on a fle*ible platform, which has $PIs opened to all the
developers. !evelopers can easily build more native applications by using the #!4

open source operating system for mobile devices has been developed since E th

development are T5Mobile, 2T, Hualcomm, and Motorola $ndroid is based on the

designed for low memory requirement. %ne of the openness by $ndroid for end users
as developers is the ability to write applications using the very same resources that
core applications were using. !evelopers have the equal rights to access all
capabilities of the phone.
"ative applications for android are written mostly with programming

2.2.3 Web Application:
1eb apps are not actually new. They are ust another term for websites,
which were developed based on web technologies like 2TM7, Cava#cript, and ##.
The term &1eb app) is nowadays often used when talking about a web5site developed
specially for a mobile device.
In contrast to native apps, web apps stay on a web server outside of the
mobile platform. -sers e*ecute a web app by opening the browser and connecting to
the server to download the whole or a part of the content of the application.
Because of this characteristic, that the content of web apps is not directlyput on the device but locali9ed on a web server, it is easier for the users to keep the
application up to date. $ change on the server will be distributed equally to all clients,
with the advantage that users do not need to reinstall the application manually each
time it is updated.
This feature is also applied to the development process/ the web app is
only written once, and it can be used for all device platforms, using an internet

web app. These techniques have special focus on mobile devices and provide some

drawing, geo location $PI. $lmost all modern mobile operating systems support these
2TM7E features.

profile information. Moreover, not all ordering food websites provide pictures and
menus descriptions for its customer.
Takeaway Tracking #ystem application gives restaurant provides some
features such as ne( order? rece/tion? e7it and order !tatu!with +oogle map $PI
'application programming interface( service by which the address of customer can be
auto locate as &+oogle address). This also ensure that there will no error and effort
need to record the address of customer.

3.3.1 S!ggested sol!tion for e$isting system %development of android application
The actual ordering and delivering process by takeaways tracking system
can be improved by modern software and services. It is suggested, that takeaways
tracking system registers with one of the online delivery services described for
receiving orders from customers. By doing this, the restaurant will become betterknown in the area. Thus, with the services provided by the online ordering services, it
will be easier for the takeaway and customers when making the ordering process.
$dditionally, a system should be created to help the admin to perform his ob better

This interface is a tool for admin to receive orders6 information from
customers and save them to the database. The interface runs on an application server
and should at least have these functions/
Manage customers6 information
Manage the dishes being provided by takeaway tracking system
Manage orders.
The ordering service cannot cover all of the customers, the ordering
methods or all the transactions of the restaurant.

utili9ing its powerful services. +oogle Map #ervices assists in planning a better
driving route through many destinations.
3.,.1 Google Map A-' Web Services oncept wit/ Android Application
+oogle has a very popular online map, which can be freely used by
anyone. Together with this map, it provides many tools for developers to use in
conunction with the map.
The 1eb #ervices is a collection of http interfaces to +oogle for getting
useful geo coding data. This thesis will use !irection #ervice in its implementation.

3.0.1 Apac/e )((- server$pache 2TTP server is an open source web server this proect is
maintained by the $pache #oftware 3oundation. It is the world most used server by
active site across all domain names. In comparison with II#;F, another server from
Microsoft ?;;. In web
technology, $pache web server sits between the clients and the web site. It redirects
all the requests from a web browser to the resource on the server, and then delivers

back the answer as web pages through 2TTP protocol. In the system suggested,
$pache 2TTP server works as an interface to communicate with the database for
inputting and receiving data.
&i'ure .$ : A/ac%e HTTP Ser#er
The client in the figure above is a software user agent, transferring a
request of the user to the server, based on an 2TTP protocol. In the suggested system,
the clients are web browsers running on customer6s computer, restaurant computer
and mobile phone of the delivery driver.
3.0.2 MyS and -)- %bacend4
Beside $pache 2TTP server, My#H7 is one of the most successful open
source products. It is a relational database management system, which can run on
more than :> operating systems. It has features of high performance, reliability, and
ease of use. Many large organi9ations have been using #H7 including 3ace book,
+oogle, $dobe.
My#H7 stores data in database obects called tables and uses #H7 as a
query language. Below are some queries that are used in My#H7/
To connect to a database and send queries, another language is used in web
technologies/ P2P. P2P is a server side scripting language its scripts are e*ecuted on
the server. P2P is open source, run on different platforms and supports many
databases, including My#H7.
P2P can be written in a separate file or mi*ed into the 2TM7 document.
The combination of $pache 2TTP server, My#H7 and P2P is often used on a 7inu*

3.0.3 )(M,5 SS and 678"9 Mobile %frontend4
2TM7E is the fifth version of 2TM7, a language developed by 1? for
use in creating semantic documents on the 1orld 1ide 1eb.
In the early days, 2TM7 documents were in very simple form/ they are
mostly te*ts. $ great feature of an 2TM7 document was the ability to link different
documents easily from one location. This feature is called 2yper Te*t 7ink. $s the
1orld 1ide 1eb increases in si9e and subsequently being used more widely, thespecifications and features of 2TM7 must also be changed accordingly. 2TM7,
nowadays, is not only used with simple te*t pages, it is also built to contain rich
media resources. 1eb pages, which are created with 2TM7E, function even more
intelligently.
reating an 2TM7E document is not too difficult, as can be seen from the
document shown above/ The first line tells the browser that this is a 2TM7E
document. The code inside the & Q) are tags Tags describe semantically what it
contains. The content displayed in between a start tag and a close tag, together with
the tags, is called &element). $ tag can contain an attribute to provide additional
information for the element. The whole code above creates an 2TM7E document with
the title ample document) and the content ample paragraph). $s mentioned in
the first paragraph, 2TM7 is used to create semantic documents. Its main task is in
describing the content, not formatting it. 2owever many developers did not use it
seriously they used some tags to style their te*ts, and were unprofessional in their
usage of the language.

This list can be contained inside the 2TM7 document or e*ternally and linked from

good combination for serving rich media content to different platforms, particularly
mobile devices. In addition to the normal functions, 2TM7E provides new features to
support development website for mobile device. #ome of these features are very
useful for developing the mobile application/

same as a native app. The Cquery 3oundation has introduced Cquery Mobile on their
website like this.
&$ unified, 2TM7E5based user interface system for all popular mobile de5
vice platforms, built on the rock5solid Cquery and Cquery -I foundation. Its
lightweight code is built with progressive enhancement, and has a fle*ible, easily
theme able design.
Cquery Mobile has been widely used in creating native5like mobile web
apps. $lthough, the framework is based on Cava#cript, developers will find it easier to
implement than Cava#cript/ The web app must include the Cquery Mobile script in the
html code. In the body of html, some predefined elements of the framework will be
used to mark the content of web app. Cquery Mobile will find these elements based on
the appropriate tag names and attributes. The web app at the end will be rendered to
have a nice interface on a mobile device.

Phone gap is an open source framework, which is developed by "it obi but

using usual web technologies. Phone gap provides its #!4 named ordova. The #!4
offers $PI to access many devices6 features from $ccelerometer to #torage. The main
function to be focused upon in this thesis is its ability to convert a web app into a
hybrid app so that it can be installed on a mobile phone by the driver.
To use Phone gap, developers generally go through some steps according
to which platform the app will run on. Below is a brief description of the steps needed

itself.

class of system with its relationship, and sequence diagram to draw the message
interaction with its obects base on its order of time.

!atabase structure design is made by the result of class diagram. It draws
the classes that need to be saved in database and its relationship.

to show menu, and the order can only be made by phone calling, while Takeaway

CONCUSIONS AND RECO;;ENDATIONS
.1 Conclu!ion!
"ow a day6s world become global village and every people want to do his
work at home and everyone has no time for go to restaurant or any food
street8cafeteria. Therefore, by using this application user can order from home and get
free home delivery when admin or reception confirm the order form android or web
application. This application allows user free home delivery with auto address
tracking system and finds the location.
It will specially design for purpose of time saving and get easily home
delivery with auto address tracking. -ser will give order of fast food and admin or

reception will receive and confirm order. This proect can be used for any type of
restaurant or fast food or canteens8cafeterias. Takeaway tracking system has been
successfully developed. It ran well on an android mobile phone. In addition, it would
be built to si* other platforms supported by Phone gap. The development process was
comfortable thanks to the framework Cquery Mobile. 2owever, because this type of
application based on web technologies, which works with stateless protocol, it was
difficult to track when there are any error to be debugged. The performance of the app
in comparison with a normal native app is obviously slower by its speed.
"evertheless, the ability to be built for multiplatform is wonderful. $lthough the app
has met the main requirements of the suggested system, it could always be improved.
$ nicer interface by styling the layout with ## will make the app more enoyable in
its look. The more features of 2TM7E should also be applied into the app to make it
works better.$ further development should be made is the integration of the app into
a new system when Takeaway Tracking system decides to register with an online
ordering service. In conclusion, the idea of integrating modern software and online
services into building was makeable and it has been successfully implemented.

$fter having being developed, the app is packaged with the online build
service from Phone gap. Takeaway tracking system 'android and web app( runs well
with the test environment and is e*pected to run the same on other platforms, which
were sup5ported by Phone gap. The implementation finishes with a successful result.
The thesis also notices some points, which could be still improved.
;. $dding more visual style on the website will capture customer6s attention
rather than having static pictures.

platform such as Blackberry and i%#, therefore other customers who are using
Blackberry operating system and i%# can also use this application and the
target user segmentation will also be wider.
