THESES AND DISSERTATIONS ACCEPTED BY GRADUATE LIBRARY SCHOOLS: 1970 THROUGH DECEMBER 1971

E. J. HUMESTON, JR.

The report presented herewith differs from that for the years 1968-69 by con- sisting of only one listing of the various schools to which the theses and disser- tations were submitted during the period in question. Since the number of disser- tations for 1970-71 is more than twice that for the preceding two-year period, it seemed desirable to save space and offer one single listing, a main list with both theses and dissertations included. To facilitate the location of disserta- tions, the names of their authors have been starred.

Parentheses are used in tables 1 and 2 for the purpose of pointing out num- bers changed from those reported in the 1968-69 columns in the 1968-69 list- ings. In the case of Columbia, while

nine dissertations were included in the two listings, only one was noted in table 2. The Rutgers figure represents the four dissertations reported in 1968- 69 and one for 1969 not reported until this year and therefore shown this year but not counted again. It is to be noted that the dissertations reported by Ore- gon are for the Ph.D and D.Ed. in the College of Education at that university, not in the library school.

Where the masters' theses are con- cerned, Kent, Peabody, and Wisconsin- Madison have now reported the numbers shown for 1968-69. These studies are of course included in the 1970-71 list- ing but are not counted for that period.

As in the past, it has seemed proper to include a certain number of entries which represent studies or theses for degrees other than the master's. This is true for three degrees at Western Michigan (two for the specialist in arts

in librarianship and one for the educa- tion specialist), four awarded by Wis- consin (specialist in librarianship), and two by Peabody (education specialist).

Taken as a whole, the studies listed for the period in question cover the to- be-expected range of subjects, with roughly the same amount of attention being given to public and academic and slightly less to school and special li- braries, and with all these areas treated more frequently than information re- trieval, printing and design, indexi'ng, and indeed any other single subject.

In the smaller group of doctoral dis- sertations the pattern is strikingly sim- ilar except that studies on information retrieval outnumber those on matters relating to special libraries by three to one.

The increase in the number of doc- toral dissertations has been noted; com- ment on table 1 seems superfluous.
