Preface

The six main divisions of the Gainford papers are the people whose papers are included in the collection:- 1. Sir Joseph Whitwell Pease, 1st Bt. (1828-1903) 2. His wife, Mary (1835-1892) 3. Joseph Albert Pease, 1st Baron Gainford (1860-1943) 4. His wife Ethel (Elsie) (1867-1941) 5. Miriam Blanche Pease (1887-1965) 6. Joseph Pease, 2nd Baron Gainford (1889-1971) Within these divisions the papers have been divided by type of document and by their original owner's interests. Thus the papers of Mary, Ethel and Miriam Pease, which are small in quantity and mainly consist of letters have simply been arranged in chronological series. The papers of Sir Joseph and J.A.Pease are much greater in bulk and complexity; their letters, diaries, scrapbooks and photographs have been put into separate series but the papers generated by their business, political and official careers have formed further large subdivisions. All are arranged chronologically within the divisions. The hardcopy listing of these papers was, unfortunately, stopped before it was completed. This means that there are two numerical series in the card handlist which are differentiated by the presence of square brackets []. Readers who have used the papers before the final arrangement was begun and who have only reference numbers in square brackets should check the bottom left hand corner of the cards for that old number, A considerable amount of re-arranging has been done and it is sometimes only possible to give an approximate idea of particular papers original number, especially in the correspondence series.

Joseph Albert Pease, 1st Baron Gainford, papers

Many of these volumes had letters and memorandum inserted in them. They have been removed for security and put in the general correspondence series at their date, with their original position indicated on them. Letters securely glued into position have been left.

MSS.Gainford 33-? are now open to readers provided they agree not to publish anything from them until the Hazlehurst-Woodland edition is produced. Lord Gainford’s permission must be obtained for quotes from the original.

(N.B. 17.2.2006 The restrictions have been lifted on the diaries up to 1910 following the publication of ‘A Liberal chronicle: journals and papers of J.A. Pease, 1st Lord Gainford, 1908-1910’.
