In the last few weeks of summer I think we’ll all be hoping for an Indian one, late summer sun, evenings in the garden either preparing the garden for the coldermonths or just enjoying time with family and friends. In the new Scene offices at Wittering, we’ve already had to talk about Christmas ideas and deadlines! But ifthere’s a bit of late sun, we’ll still make the most of it.

The Scene magazine in Rutland has been out for over a year now. Our maga-zines are now reaching the Deepings, Stamford, Rutland and most recently Peterborough and Bourne. So 34,000 magazines a month! September sees the launch of the new Wedding Scene magazine too (see page 40).This month in Rutland we’re looking at travel, weddings, music and a historical re-enactment in Stamford as well as what is going on in the heart of Rutland. The Uppingham Theatre Company is working hard on preparing for their pantomime – you can see more information on page 37....oh no you can’t.....no really, you can!

In Great Bowden, a big charity auction of skills is taking place in September, see page 16 for more information or visit www.gbrecitaltrust.co.uk

Don’t forget to keep us up to speed on what’s going on in Rutland, events, fundraising, new business success....there’s news on Uppingham businesses on page 18.

Finally, the Scene are hosting a Macmillan coffee morning, details on page 46 – why don’t you host one too?

Retirement talk. The government is abolishing the rule forcing pensioners when to purchase an Annuity. In doing so, it will re-write the rules governing buying a pension - but is it right for you?

Currently, you can use your pension fund to buy a flexible income each year. But because your fund remains invested and as there is no guarantee to future perfor-mance and value, this Drawdown arrangement is known as an unsecured pension (USP). Or you may buy a set lifetime’s income (an Annuity). At age 75 – age 77 from 22 April 2010 to 06 April 2011 – people in Drawdown must move to alternatively secured pension (ASP).

A main difference between USP and ASP is that if someone dies under USP there is a 35% charge on drawn down funds whereas under ASP the charge rises to an eye watering 82%. Under the proposed new rules this charge will move to 55%. However, there are other important differ-ences. Drawdown income is limited according to the annual income that may be bought by an Annuity. The maximum that can be taken in any one year is 120% of what the same pension fund would have bought as an Annuity. A danger is that poor investment returns combined with drawing too much income early in retirement means that when it comes to buying an Annuity later on, the fund is too

small to live off. An Annuity provides a set income for life. Your money is invested (in low-risk bonds, gilts etc), but low interest rates and increasing life expectancy mean Annuity rates are at an all-time low. But because to beat Annuity rates Drawdown money may still be exposed to riskier investments, it represents a riskier option. However, Drawdown could buy not only more pension but also valu-able time before Annuity rates improve. Those in Drawdown avoid being locked into a poor Annuity rate, they retain control over their income and investments, and gain an opportunity to grow their pension fund further before they buy an Annuity. Investing in funds, shares and so on might also deliver higher returns.

However, the fact remains that Drawdown is potentially an expensive and complex proposition and presents a risk for those who have enough funds to consider Drawdown but not quite enough money to afford to make any mistakes. If you are about to enter retirement, or wish to plan for it, we offer a completely Independent perspective. Courses for adults and families

Rutland Adult Learning runs courses in venues across Rutland and in surrounding areas, such as Great Casterton and Bourne, so that everyone who wants to learn has access to a course nearby.

Many of Rutland Adult Learning’s courses are laid on as a result of demand from learners, and this year several new topics have been added including Garden Design, Crocheting and Life Coaching. Most courses are subsidised by the Skills Funding Agency so represent great value for money, and you can be confident that although fees are low the quality of teaching is of the highest standard, with all our tutors qualified and highly experienced in their fields.

As well as running adult courses, Rutland Adult Learning also holds regular free Family Learning events for families. The events are informal and friendly, and offer a great opportunity for children and their parents to learn together and make new friends.

Rutland Adult Learning also offers training for businesses, in the form of QCF qualifications for staff and on-site training for groups in subjects such as customer service.

Hair Today... Gone

TomorrowSeeing as we finally got some decent British sun, it’s time to get your legs out and those bikini lines prepped for your holidays. Shaving my legs isn’t, if I’m honest a everyday occurrence, let alone a weekly activity, generally it revolves around my social life and what nights I’m going out, luckily my re-growth is blonde so I can get away with it and the man in my life doesn’t notice! However the one thing I hate is armpit hair; there’s no excuse to do a Julia Roberts – yuck! Top tip: if you get shaving rash under your armpits after using a razor & shave gel, try ditching the shave gel and have a dry shave, works for me….

Here are my best tips for the best hair removal products around:

Epilator’s

For those of you that don’t know, an epilator is an electrical device used to remove hair by mechanically grasping multiple hairs simultane-ously and pulling them out, its similar to waxing. I highly recommend them for your bikini line, especially as waxing can be expensive if you go to a salon. Epilators never need to be replaced so they are definitely a good investment. You can pick one up from about £35 and they range up to over £100. New to the epilator world is the Braun Silk-epil Xpressive Pro Wet & Dry Rechargeable Epilator, which comes with close grip technology which lifts, loosens and removes hair short as a grain of sand, it’s quite pricey, but you get what you pay for!

Nad’s Ingrow Solution & Facial Wax Strips

I use this product regularly as it’s perfect for using after shaving and waxing, the solution helps to main-tain clear, irritation free skin. After using the product I noticed that my bikini line (which is prone to a few ingrown hairs) remained clear.

The solution contains Aloe Vera and it is really quick and easy to apply. Their waxing strips are also really good they are easy to use and only need warming up in your hands. Perfect to get rid of those little hairs on your face without causing redness.

Gillette Venus Spa breeze 2 in 1 razor plus shave gel bars

The first disposable razor with built-in shave gel bars, com-bining the simplicity of Venus Breeze with the convenience of a disposable! Simply add water for skin-loving light lather and a smooth shave without the need for separate shave gel, what a time saver?

Veet’s new hair removal range

The new Veet Suprem’ Essence range, with its new formula has been enriched with a blend of essential oils and velvet rose fragrance to leave your skin moisturised, delicately scented and luxuriously smooth. The range includes: wax strips, hair removal cream, shower hair removal cream & a spray on hair remover cream which are all delicately scented, meaning they won’t smell of that yucky hair removal aroma. The range seems to be quite well thought out, however spray on hair remover cream for me is messy and time con-suming; I’ll stick to shaving my legs.

Learn a new skill – With a range of chefs, music teachers, dancers, etc offering their services, this would be a great opportunity to learn a new inter-est. 2. Enjoy someone else’s skill – Benefit from the experience and years of learning that someone else has invested and enjoy the fruits of their labours.

3.Other – Simply, bid for an item that has been provided does not need a skill to create or to enjoy.

When we visit our high streets now we often are guided by our perceptions of the bad economy, to look for ‘which shop has closed this week’. Uppingham is certainly bucking this trend and has recently seen many new businesses open on the high street and positive sounds are that there are more to come.

The Olive Kitchen is tucked away in Printers Yard off the High Street, offering you a selection of Mediterranean foods, a delicatessen, crepes, waffles and of course, olives. Open Monday to Saturday from 9am – 5.30pm, you can visit for some treats to take home for lunch or dinner, stay for a coffee or a fresh fruit milkshake and a natter with owner Anthony, or bring the Olive Kitchen to your home with a Paella party. A perfect excuse for fun with friends, without the need to do the cooking! Call Anthony Savage on 01572 822588www.theolivekitchen.co.uk

For many years now, a fresh fruit and veg shop has been a rare sight on our high streets. Again, Uppingham can boast its very own local shop, with locally sourced produce. EW Greengrocers is based in the old Earthworks premises on the High Street, who have now moved a few doors down to a larger shop. Both businesses are owned by Lesley Smillie, who has responded to the demand for freshly picked and carefully chosen seasonal food. Lesley is up and out before we’ve even thought about waking from our slumber, often leaving at 3am to get the best pick. For those busy bees that can’t make it to the shop, Lesley can deliver fruit and veg boxes from £10, with no delivery charge in Uppingham.

Open Tuesday – Friday 9am – 5pm and Saturday 9am – 4.30pm, Tel: 01572 829997 or 01572 822276.

High street revivial in an award winning market town

A community project to bring high-speed, wireless broadband to Uppingham has won the East Midlands regional prize in the prestigious Action for Market Towns, ‘Market Town’ Awards. The project has earned the town regional recognition, lead by business partnership for the town, Uppingham First in partnership with Rutland County Council, who part- funded the Uppingham Wi-Fi pilot through the Welland Market Towns challenge fund money.

Due to a lack of high-speed broadband from a major telecoms company, Uppingham First looked at whether a system of Wi-Fi aerials covering the whole of the town could provide at least 10Mb broadband. Working with local business, Rutland Telecom Ltd, the team piloted the project first by providing a service to the Beeches Estate on the north side of Uppingham. Based on the success of the pilot, £20,000 of funding was secured to provide a further network of miniature aerials by March 2011. A final stage, which will complete provision of Wi-Fi to the remainder of town, is due to be completed by March 2012. The project gives two hours a day of free community access to high speed Wi-Fi, with further access available on payment.

Uppingham First was winner of the Business and Economy Category and overall regionalwinners of the East Midlands Market Town Awards. They now go head-to-head with other regional winners to compete for the National Market Town Award at the Action for Market Towns Convention in Chippenham, Wiltshire on October 12. www.towns.org.uk

KEEPING IT IN THE

FAMILYRutland Tile Gallery, which was officially opened a year ago by the former Mayor of Oakham, Jan Fillingham, MBE, is celebrating its anniversary by expanding after a very successful first year in business. Phone call scam

Rutland County Council’s Fraud Investigation Team has been made aware of a telephone scam currently being used. The scam works by someone calling and stating they are calling from Rutland County Council and are calling to ask about the residents’ council tax band being reduced and offering to obtain a rebate on behalf of the occupier. The first question they ask, however, is for the occupi-ers’ bank details. Rutland County Council would like to remind residents that bank account details are not requested over the phone. If residents receive this kind of call please report it to Rutland County Council on 01572 722 577.

Portfolio Holder for Corporate Services, Councillor Terry Kind advises: “You should never give any information regarding bank accounts or cards to anyone you do not know – if you have any doubts regarding being contacted by telephone or e-mail from someone who claims they are from the council please feel free to contact the council directly on 01572 722 577 or email [email protected]

A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN….! Taylor and Rose new shop opening…With all the reports in the press that focus on the tough side of busi-ness and the unfortunate position that some businesses find them-selves in, forcing them to close, it’s great news to hear of a new shop opening in Oakham on Mill Street.

Co-owner Tamara tells us more…..In the beginning there was just me -Tamara, then I found someone that is as passionate about spread sheets and stock counts as I am about up-cycled furniture and interior styling. A match made in heaven! And the greatest thing is that Tania is my cousin and the nearest thing I will get to having a sister. So when we both reached a career cross-roads we decided to partner our skills and launch Taylor & Rose! We specialise in up-cycled, re-loved furniture with beautiful classic English home and garden gifts. We try to buy UK made and eco friendly where possible and support local craft and artists. We also stock great eco paint and fabric with a make up service for curtains and cushions right through to whole home and garden projects. You are sure to find something that will put a smile on your face and if not please take advantage of our ‘find it for you service.’

Best wishes Tamara and Tania

“ I love to play Donald Steel’s courses and believe Stapleford to be one of England’s greatest

Jewels” Sam Torrance

Earlier this summer, we were invited to play a round of golf at the Stapleford Park course. Having recently watched the likes of Ian Woosnam and Constantina Rocca playing the golf course at Stapleford Park as part of the 2010 Handa European Senior Masters, we arrived through the main entrance with some trepidation. Before the exertions of a game of golf, we had a light lunch of club sandwiches and home-made crisps in the main house. Lunch was most enjoyable and although it was a just a sandwich it was well presented, well cooked and the home made crisps were divine! Feeling ready to take on the course, we gathered our things from the car and headed to the course. The first glimpse of the golf course is impressive, with the Imposing mod-ern Club House (Pavillion) providing a fantas-tic backdrop to the 18th hole. The changing rooms at the clubhouse provide very good amenities – lockers, toiletries, towels, water dispenser etc. The golf course is in excellent condition and is a joy to play; challenging without being ridiculously difficult. The course winds its way through the historic landscape of mature trees, ponds and streams and even the river Eye comes into play on four holes.

There are plenty of hazards which means you need to think about how you play each hole and how you approach each green, which makes it interesting.

The greens are undulating and reasonably quick so you have to read your putts well. Some of the bunkers are very challenging which again makes your approach shots important and there are a number of other hazards with a fair bit of water. The rough is wispy and not too treacherous. So we’ll be more prepared next time!

Overall an excellent course and one we would happily play on a regular basis. It does appeal to golfers of all levels as it presents a good challenge for low handicappers and yet is not too damaging or difficult for high handicappers. As Sam Torrance said “ I love to play Donald Steel’s courses and believe Stapleford to be one of England’s greatest Jewels”

Essence Hair and Beauty of Uppingham has recently expanded its business with two new

members of staff in the salon, as well as refreshing the salon look ready for the Autumn.

Liz Caffarelli started in April this year, bringing her experience and knowledge in beauty therapies to the salon. Liz made a career change into beauty

therapy and has gradually added to her range of qualifications, responding to changing market

demands.

With more people using computers, and not always holding the right position with the desk, keyboard, chair etc., Liz has seen many clients with back and

shoulder strain.

Massage can ease these aches and pains, whilst giving you much needed ‘time out’ to relax and feel refreshed, and Liz can be tailor this with blended

oils depending on your skin type, mood and stresses.

In the hair salon, new junior stylist Sam Nicholls has recently joined the team, assisting

stylists, looking after clients and working with the highly experienced team of staff managed by Kate

Considering our economic climate, what destinations are giving travellers the best value for money right now?

The world is in recession, not just the UK and thankfully the Pound is strengthening against most major currencies and this really helps us all and we are now seeing far more competitive prices. Many of our properties are putting out superb offers and airlines are also now reacting as they need to fill air-craft. We therefore have offers available to most of our destinations so our advice is to give us a call and we will come up with some very competitive and exciting ideas! For example we currently have some great deals to places like Mauritius and The Maldives with prices for 7 nights at 5-star resorts from around £1,200 per person, which is excellent value.

How long have you been involved in travel?

I started work at Thomas Cook way back when I was just 18 so have now done nearly 30 years!! The rest of the team at Inspirational Travel have also averaged over 20 years each giving us plenty of experience!

What are the current most popular destinations for long haul travellers?

We are selling places like The Maldives and Mauritius well, particularly for honeymooners or escapists, and then Kenya has had a bit of a resurgence and of course South Africa is very much in vogue following the World Cup. Two-centre itineraries also prove very popular whereby we offer the excitement of a safari and some exploration combined with relaxation and pampering at an exotic beach resort. Combinations such as South Africa combined with Mauritius and Kenya or Tanzania combined with Zanzibar work very well with romance and excitement all rolled into one superb itinerary! We have also done a few weddings recently in South Africa, including one that actually took place in the bush at a safari lodge with wildlife wandering past the proceedings as natural invited guests!!

How can long haul be child friendly?

The key thing when travelling with children is to try and avoid destinations that have a massive time difference to ours. We can then organise lots of exciting and interesting things for families includ-ing safaris with their own rangers, walking with Maasai warriors, cultural visits to local villages with involvement in activities with local children such as a game of football, and then lots of exciting activi-ties such as horse-riding, sailing, cycling, fishing and so on. We also have a lot of properties that run very professional kid’s clubs so that parents can have quality adult-time and simply relax.

What makes IT different from high street travel agents?

A travel agent is a retailer selling lots of operators products whereas we are a licensed tour opera-tor constructing our own holidays - I guess the easiest analogy is that we are like a car manufacturer making and selling our own cars as opposed to a showroom selling every make and model!. Being tailor-made specialists means we effectively start with a blank canvas with each customer and create a bespoke itinerary for them. We are specialists in the areas that we sell and therefore have a depth of knowledge in these areas that is difficult to beat.

The Roadster is a compact sports car with two distinct personalities - open and energiz-ing, or closed and protective. I’d go as far to say it is one of the world’s most beautiful cars: elegant, yet aggressive with a low, purposeful stance and instantly recognisable as an Aston Martin.

Once inside the Vantage Roadster you soon realise that the car’s interior is just as dra-matic as its stunningly fashioned exterior. The instrument pack is crafted from aluminium with a three-dimensional profile for easy reading. The central message displays even use organic electroluminescence (OEL) – a process pioneered by Aston Martin – making them easier to read than conventional LCD’s. Sitting behind the three-spoke steering wheel and feeling the quality of the hand-stitched leather trim has an almost intoxicat-ing effect.

Starting the beautiful beast up involves a touch of theatre. The ignition is controlled by a stainless steel and glass ECU (Emotion Control Unit). The ECU is inserted into a spe-cial docking station set within the traditional clear glass starter button. Pressing the ECU fully into the starter button fires the engine. Oh, the sound! You don’t need a stereo - the deep, rasping, buttery burble of the 420 bhp 4.7-litre V8 lump means you could happily

listen to just that all day. Add the engine to the smallest model in the range and you get blistering all-round performance. The V8 Vantage can reach 0-62 mph in 4.9 seconds and goes on to an eye-wateringly fast 180 mph. There is no denying that the V8 Vantage is a true high-performance sports car. The engine is willing and the handling is predictable and the good visibility means that the car is easy to use in town or on twisty country roads. And, of course, if you’re interested in track days, this car will handle a race circuit. In fact the Van-tage will beg you to take it on a track. It would be cruel not to satisfy its needs.

Yes, the Midlands based company has done a mind-blowing job on this car. It’s thrilling to drive, it draws looks of admiration wherever it goes and it is an ex-traordinarily competent all-rounder. All in all Aston Martin Lagonda Ltd fulfilled my boyhood dreams by letting me drive this tour de force. It’s something I won’t forget and nor will anyone else who gets behind the wheel of the remarkable V8 Vantage.

Every little lad goes through a stage of excitedly playing with cars and some men, like me, simply don’t grow out of it. The difference is we’re not talking toy cars any-more. So, you can imagine my response when Aston Martin Lagonda agreed to let me test drive their V8 Vantage Roadster. To say I was thrilled would be an under-statement. I was off to Warwickshire as soon as my Aston Martin contact could get back from L.A. He called me from the States apolo-gising profusely for not being able to get back to the UK sooner - something to do with aeroplanes and volcanic ash! After the ash had cleared I was given a tour around the Gaydon based Aston Mar-tin Lagonda factory and witnessed Aston Martin’s being made by local people rather than robots. It was wonderful to see cars actually being produced

Music Scene The world runs away with Josh Ritter American singer/songwriter Josh Ritter has come a long way since he took to the stage solo in Ireland performing at Open Mic nights and selling copies of his self-released first CD. This year has seen the release of his sixth studio album, ‘So Runs the World Away’, which was typically released in Ireland first before its worldwide release. “It happened for me first in Ireland.

He was born in the city of Moscow, Idaho in 1976 and admits to not experiencing much music until he was 17. After hearing a song on one of his parents’ records, Bob Dylan’s duet with Johnny Cash on ‘Girl from the North Country’ from the ‘Nashville Skyline’ album, he decided that writing and performing music was for him. He bought himself a guitar and began writing his own material.

In addition to working hard creating material for his albums and live shows, Josh has also been writing his first novel, ‘Bright’s Passage’, which will be published in the summer of 2011.

As anyone who has listened to Josh Ritter’s albums will tell you, his song writing and performing skills con-tinue to grow and impress and the opportunity to experience this live should not be missed. The six dates in September include Nottingham Albert Hall on Sunday 19th and London’s Barbican on Thursday 23rd.

Closer to home, Shakedown have dropped their usual ‘Blues’ suffix for a concert with a difference when Claude Bourbon appears at St Kyneburgha Church, Castor, Peterborough on Thursday, September 16. Claude is a classically trained French guitar virtuoso who performs an eclectic mix of jazz, blues, Spanish and Medieval music. Tickets cost £15 in advance, £16.00 PayPal and £17.00 on the door. For further details of this and the blues artists appearing at Castor later in the year visit the website: www.shakedownblues.co.uk

I am a couple of years off retirement age. I know I won’t now get my state pension at 60 but I’m unclear about exactly when I’ll qualify and whether I’ll be entitled to a full pension when I

stop work. Can you help?

State Pensions are changing from 6 April 2010. If you reach State Pension age on or after that date then you will get a State Pension under the new system. For most people the changes will happen automatically, but you may need to take action to make sure you get everything you are entitled to. To get a full basic State Pension, currently around £95 per week, you will only need to build up 30 qualifying years of National Insurance contribu-tions or credits. Under the current system, women normally need 39 qualifying years and men 44 qualifying years. To start getting some basic State Pension, you will only need one qualifying year of National Insurance contributions or credits. Under the current system, you need to build up a minimum number of qualifying years to start getting some basic State Pension – 10 years for women and 11 years for men.

Changes to State Pensions will also make it easier to get a full basic State Pension for many people with caring responsibilities. If you are a woman, the earliest age from which you can start getting your State Pension will increase from the current age of 60. The State Pension age for women is rising gradually between 2010 and 2020 to make it the same as for men, currently 65. Your own State Pension age depends on your exact date of birth. You can get a forecast telling you how much State Pension you may get when you reach state pension age from the Directgov website. You can also find out what information you’ll need before you apply. Go to: www.direct.gov.uk.
