What about the future?
It is expected that civil engineer jobs will increase faster than average through2016. More civil engineers will be needed to design and build things as thepopulation grows. For example, they will need to fix and replace buildings androads as they continue to become old, unsafe, and worn out.
Some job openings will occur to replace those who go to other jobs or leave thelabor force. Job openings will also depend on where you live. There may not beas many jobs when the economy is doing poorly. This is because there is oftenless construction at such times.

Structural Engineers are hired by industry, all levels of government and consultingfirms to help design and s upervise the construction of st ructures such as bridges, dams, towers and buildings of all sizes, plus the layout and construction ofhighways and pipelines. Some are hired by the contractors to supervise andorganize the workforce involved in a project.
CareersMany civil engineers continue on, obtain their Mas ters and PhD degrees, and enter the world of research and teaching. The diversity within civil engineering creates a wide choice of careers for itsgraduates.Within Canada, civil graduates work at all levels of the economy. Somework in small consulting firms, including those s pecializing in structural, environmental, municipal and geotechnical engineering, and some work inlarger firms which encompass several branches of civil engineering. Theyhave worked for the federal, provincial and municipal levels of governmentin their transportation divisions or have started their own businesses .Graduates of civil engineering can work all over the world, either asconsultants with their own companies or as employees of large internationalcompanies , or as volunteers in developing countries

History of EngineeringEngineering is one of the oldest professions in the world. Around 2550 BC, Imhotep, the firstdocumented engineer, built a famous stepped pyramid of King Zoser located at Saqqarah.
With simple tools and mathematics he createda monument that s tands to this day. Hisgreatest contribution to engineering was hisdiscovery of the art of building with shapedstones. Those who followed him carried
engineering to remarkable heights using skilland imagination. Vitruvius' De archiecturawaspublished 1AD in Rome and survived to give usa look at engineering education in ancienttimes.photo courtesy of Dr. R. Loov

Military EngineeringThe first engineers were military engineers, combining military and civil s kills. During periods of conflictthe engineers made and used instruments of war such as catapults, battering rams, towers, and ramps toaid in attack ing their enemies' forts & encampments and also to defend their own. During the periods ofpeace, they were involved in many military and civil acti vities such as building fortifications for defenceagainst further attacks, roads, bridges, aqueducts, canals and cathedrals. The construction andhydraulics techniques used by the medieval engineers in China, Japan, India and other regions of the FarEast were far more sophist icated than those of the medieval European engineers.

Machu Picchu, Peru is considered a civil engineeringmarvel. It was built high in the Andes Mountainsassist ed by some of history's most ingenious waterresources engineers. The people of Machu Picchubuilt a mountain-top city complete with running-water,drainage syst ems, food production and s tonestruc tures so advanced that they have endured forover 500 years.
Civil EngineeringCivil engineering is the oldest of the main disciplines of engineering. The first engineering school, theNational School of Bridges and Highways i n France, was opened in 1747. John Smeaton was the firstperson to actually call himself a "Civil Engineer". These c ivil engineers built all types of structures, designed water-supply and sewer systems, designed railroads and highways, and planned cities. In 1828the world's first engineering soc iety came into being, the Institution of Civil Engineers in England.Mechanical EngineeringMechanical engineering was the second branch of engineering to emerge in the last part of the 1700s.The invention of the steam engine was the starting point for the Industrial Revolution. All types ofmachinery were being developed now and so a new kind of engineer, one dealing with tools andmachines, was born. Mechanical engineers received formal recognition in 1847 with the founding of theInstitution of Mechanical Engineers in England.Electrical EngineeringKnowledge of electrici ty grew slowly during the 1800s: the original elect ric cell was invented byAlessandro Volta in 1800, the Gramme dynamo and elect ric motor were invented in 1872, the transistorand the vacuum t ube appeared by the mid 1900s and by the end of the 1900s electrical and electronicsengineers outnumbered all the other types of engineers in the world.Chemical EngineeringIn the 1800's, industry started using more and more chemical processes in many areas such asmetallurgy, food production and text iles. At the end of the 19th century, the increased use of chemicals inthe manufacturing industry eventually created a new industry, an industry whose main function was theproduction of chemicals. The new chemical engineer was involved in the design and operation of thesenew chemical producing plants.Around 1900, the term "Chemical Engineer" was being used, but it wasn't until the development of thepetroleum industry that chemical engineering became recognized as a unique engineering disc ipline.

Definition and Nature of the Work
Civil engineers plan and design bridges and tunnels, as well as highways, airfields, harbors, water and
sewage systems, and buil dings. They also supervise the construction of such projects to ensure that they
are built according to carefully drafted plans. Civil engineers are employed by all levels of government,
by construction companies, and by engineering and architectural firms. Some civi l engineers do
independent consulting work. Others work for publi c utility companies or in the iron and steel industry.
Still othe r civil e ngineers teach at colleges and universities.
Civil e ngineering is such a broad and varied fiel d that most engineers specialize in one area. Some of themain specializations include structural, construction, hydraulics, sanitary, environmental, transportation,
and soil mechanics engine ering.
Structural enginee rs are experts i n building structures safely and effi ciently. They work with architects to
design l arge buildings, bridges, and tunnel s. Construction engineers supervise the actual construction of
projects once they are designed. They decide on the best materials and methods to use in building such
structures as skyscrapers. Civil engineers who work in hydraulics design canals, flood -control systems,
and irrigation systems. They study water sources and try to develop ways of using water that will be nefitthe community. For example, a hydraulic engineer might design a dam in a river to create a res ervoir to
safeguard the water supply of an area.
Sanitary engineers design systems to purify water and treat wastes to provide a safe and economical
supply of water. They work wi th environmental engineers to control water and air pollution.
Transportation engineers pl an highways, subways, airports, and railroads. Those who specialize i n soil
mechanics develop ways to use soil so that building foundations can be improved.

Can Civil Engineering Pave A Path For Your FutureCivil Engineering is a field that will prove to be one of the most valuable ones in the
construction world. Civil Engineers need to have the ability to be very analytical and possess a
good grasp of their math skills. The potential in this field for income is around $26 dollars an
hour around $54,000 a year, not to bad right .There are many other fields that are associated
with engineering other than just Civil and I will get back to those a bit later.
A Break Down of Civil EngineeringCivil engineers plan and design bridges and tunnels, as well as highways, airfields, harbors, water
and sewage systems, and buildings. They also supervise the construction of such projects to ensure that
they are built according to carefully drafted plans. Civil engineers are employed by all levels of
government, by construction companies, and by engineering and architectural firms. Some civil
engineers do independent consulting work. Others work for public utility companies or in the iron and
steel industry. Still other civil engineers teach at colleges and universities. As defined by

Civil Engineers have the abilities to take on many different roles in the work force; they
are not limited to one specific genera of work.
Civil engineering is such a broad and varied field that most engineers specialize in one area.
Some of the main specializations include structural, construction, hydraulics, sanitary, environmental,
transportation, and soil mechanics engineering. (stateuniverstity.com)
Many things that we see around us today such as high rise buildings, stores of any size
for that matter, or even the monuments that our society sees as a mark in history would not
exist today if it were not for the engineers who planned and laid the foundations.
Requirements For The Field
Although there are many things to consider when you look at taking a job in this field
besides just the grades that you make in school there are other requirements that you must
make note of, for instance some positions will require you to travel to various job sites. Others
may want you to further your degree past an Associates degree but in doing so it will open
many more doors along the lines of salary and benefits for you. Like I said though there are
other requirements that are needed in this field as stated by ( bls.gov)
Engineers should be creative, inquisitive, analytical, and detail oriented. They shouldbe able to work as part of a team and to communicate well, both orally and in writing.
Communication abilities are becoming increasingly important as engineers interact more
frequently with specialists in a wide range of fields outside engineering.Engineers who work for the Federal Government usually must be U.S. citizens. Some
engineers, particularly nuclear engineers and aerospace and other engineers working fordefense contractors, may need to hold a security clearance.
The people who do jobs like engineering are very intelligent people and the people who
employ them realize this. Engineers are thought of to be left-brained people and that is where
the problem solving and the analytical skills are processed in the brain. This is important

because the better an engineer understands his challenges and the project at hand means he
will be able to provide great results in the safest way possible.
Advancement
Just like with any job or career in life beside the amount of money we make its nice to
know that hard work and diligence can be rewarded by advancement in the company. I mean
even thought the money isnt bad at the bottom who wants to stay there right. Engineering is a
challenging field but the better you understand something that better at it you are. One of the
top positions in this field is the Head Engineer which means you are it, nothing will be done
without your approval which means when things go wrong they fall on your shoulders.
The pay which was good to start with will continue to get even better.
The median expected salary for a typicalLand Surveyors Supervisorin the UnitedStates is $67,483. This basic market pricing report was prepared using our
Certified Compensation Professionals'analysisof survey data collected fromthousands of HR departments at employers of all sizes, industries and geographies.

Engineering jobs ranked twelfth out of the top twenty-five most sought after jobs right
now. That means there are numerous job openings right now. Advancement as with most
companies comes in many different forms. The better the schooling you have the better the
advancement opportunities will be offered. There are some companies that will offer to put u
back in school to further the degree that you have started most companies would request a
contract for that so that they are insured that you will work for them. There are many
opportunities in the engineering field some of which are expressed on this site

Civilengineering, considered one of the oldest engineering disciplines, encompasses many specialties. The major specialties within civil engineering
are structural, water resources, environmental, construction, transportation, and geotechnical engineering.
There are other fields which were not listed on this site but with an engineering degree
the possibilities are still open for other fields, due to the classes that engineers go through
there are many careers that are possible. Civil engineering is going to be a great fit for anyonethat has the ability to analyze and interpret data and make the best decisions based off of the
information they have, so use the information that has been provided above and decide if you
have the requirements to strive in the engineering field.
