“COMBUSTION EFFICIENCY HANDBOOK.”

AMETEK/Thermox product line offers the greatest selection of flue gasanalyzers in the industry for measuring oxygen, combustibles, methane, and fuel-rich atmospheres. Our commitment is to provide the rightanalyzer for every application to ensure the highest levels of efficiency, cost savings, and safety for our customers.

Flue Gas Measurement and Combustion EfficiencyTypically, imbalance in the fuel/air mix results in incomplete combus-tion. Heat is wasted due to the presence of excess air and harmful NOxemissions are vented into the atmosphere.

Thermox Site Survey AnalysisThermox can demonstrate the fuel savings and emissions reductiongained by measuring oxygen and combustibles by performing a sitesurvey analysis using a portable analyzer. Our service personnel alongwith your operational assistance will perform air-to-fuel ratio steptesting to determine the safest, lowest excess O2 set point. Combustionefficiency gain and NOx emissions reduction will be measured andrecorded. A report will detail opportunities to increase your combus-tion efficiency and maximize fuel savings. In most cases, a pay-backperiod of less than two months can be demonstrated for the combus-tibles option. At the same time we can also evaluate the condition ofyour existing Thermox analyzers and provide maintenance, retrofit and/or new analyzer purchase suggestions.

Contact Thermox Service or Sales to arrange a site survey analysis ofyour facility today by calling (412) 828-9040.

Thermox improves your combus-tion process by operating withminimum excess air. Thermox-combined oxygen and combus-tibles analyzers allow measure-ments of oxygen and combustiblesand/or methane gases from asingle sample point. Once levelsare determined, the supply ofexcess air can be controlled on acontinuous basis minimizingNOx emissions, heat loss, andincompletely burned fuel loss. When combustion efficiency ismaximized, the process operationis more cost-effective.

NEMA 3R standard lift-off enclosure

NEMA 4X optional hinged enclosure

Process gas is drawn into the analyzers primary sample loop byan aspirator and returns to process. Gas enters the split flow blockthat is separated by a baffle and contacts the catalytic combustiblesand methane detector. It then passes to the zirconium oxide cell, where the oxygen concentration is measured, before returning tothe main sample loop and then back to the process.

Convection Loop Operation

Convection Loop

Page 8: Thermox Flue Gas Analyzers - Home | AMCS · Thermox Site Survey Analysis Thermox can demonstrate the fuel savings and emissions reduction gained by measuring oxygen and combustibles

8

Designed for applications with high particulate levels in the gas stream, the analyzer mounts directly on the combustion process to providecontinuous measurement of oxygen (WDG-HPII) or oxygen and com-bustibles (WDG-HPIIC). This analyzer is suitable for gas streams up to1300°F (704°C) using the standard 316SS probe/filter assembly. Flue gastemperatures up to 2800°F (1537°C) can be measured using optionalhigh temperature probes. For corrosive gas streams, sample wettedparts in Hastelloy or Inconel are available. The analyzers can be pro-vided in a range of mounting styles. For hazardous area locations, purged or explosion proof versions are available.

APPLICATIONS

Convection Principle

Since the sample inlet and return are inside the filter and at the sameabsolute pressure as the process, there is no flow through the filter. Theflue gas oxygen diffuses through the filter and the sample in the filterflows through the sensor plumbing because of a convective motiveforce. The sample in the vertical cell housing is heated to 1283°F (695°C)while the sample in the return vertical tube is at about 480°F (249°C).This temperature difference generates a density difference whichcirculates the gas through the system. Process gas enters and replen-ishes the gas inside the filter by diffusion only. Thus the filter neverblocks, making it ideal for high particulate applications.

WDG-InsituINSITU FLUE GAS OXYGEN ANALYZER

The WDG-Insitu is a direct insertion-type oxygen probe where thezirconium oxide cell is directly in the stream of the products of combus-tion. The patented WDG-Insitu is designed for applications where theflue gas temperature does not exceed 1250°F (677°C) and where combus-tibles measurements are not required. The outer probe material isRA330, which is highly resistant to corrosion. For hazardous arealocations, explosion-proof and purged versions are available, includingCENELEC EEx d IIC. For high particulate applications, a filter can easilybe added.

Simplified Construction For Easy ServiceWith the unique design of the WDG-Insitu oxygen probe, field replace-ment of all components is easily performed. While the outer protectiontube remains in the process, the inner tube structure, that houses theoxygen cell and furnace/thermocouple assembly, can be removed easily. With no need to return the probe to the factory, extensive down timeand expensive repairs on your oxygen insitu probe are no longernecessary.

With the Excess Fuel Software option, you can monitor processescontaining fuel-rich atmospheres such as bright annealing or decarbur-izing applications, or for the fume stage of an incinerator.

The Remote Calibration Unit and the Calibration Moduleallow automatic calibration of your analyzer.

With calibration gases permanently connected to the RemoteCalibration Unit, you can program the Series 2000 or IQ-based analyzers to activate a calibration cycle at a timedinterval. A calibration can also be performed remotely ondemand by contact closure or via the RS-485 communicationsport. In addition, you can calibrate locally by manuallypressing keys on the Series 2000 or IQ Link.

Excess Fuel Software OptionMONITOR COMBUSTION PROCESSES THAT OPERATE IN EXCESS FUEL ATMOSPHERES

Automatic Calibration OptionSIMPLIFIES CALIBRATION OF ANALYZER

Similarly, a verification can be performed in which the calibration gas valuesare recorded but no changes are made to the calibration settings in the ana-lyzer.

Automatic calibration capabilities can be easily added to an analyzer at a laterdate by simply plugging a Calibration Module into the Series 2000 or IQanalyzer and installing a Remote Calibration Unit near the sensor.

Remote Calibration Unit

Theory of OperationIn the absence of molecular oxygen, the zirconium oxide cell responds to minute amounts of oxygen pro-duced by the dissociation of water or carbon dioxide at the high cell operating temperature. This dissociationis inhibited by the presence of combustibles in the sample gas. As the combustibles concentration increases, the oxygen concentration decreases, and the output signal from the cell becomes greater. This means that thecell keeps responding when there is no net oxygen in the flue gas. In fact, it becomes a sensor of net combus-tibles.

FEATURES

n User-selectable inputs include defining the hydro-gen-to-carbon ratio (H/C) of the fuel or selecting froma menu of common fuels

n Alarms can be set for high or low readingsn Analog output and display scalable to cover com-
