The Dionex IonPac AS18-4µm column is ideal for analyzing inorganic anions in diverse sample matrices, including drinking water, wastewater and food and beverage samples. Figure 2 shows the analysis of municipal drinking water spiked with chlorite and chlorate using the Dionex IonPac AS18-4µm capillary column. Excellent resolution is maintained in this drinking water sample even at the increased fl ow rate of 30 µL/min, allowing easier peak integration and more accurate results.

Smaller particles create more effi cient peaks as show in Figure 3. The top chromatogram was generated using the Dionex IonPac AS18-Fast column which uses a particle size of 7.5 µm. The bottom chromatogram was generated using the new Dionex IonPac AS18-4µm column, which uses 4 µm particles. Notice the sharper, taller peaks in the bottom chromatogram, even using half the injection volume, which allows the use of faster fl ow rates without a loss in resolution. The com-bination of faster fl ow rates with higher resolution provides increased sample throughput with more reliable results.

Did You Know? Many laboratories have pushed the existing 5.5–9 µm particle size columns to their limits of resolution and speed. Often increased fl ow rates cannot be used to speed up analyses because resolution and thus quality of results, suffer. For appli-cations requiring high resolution, it is not practical to improve resolution by using longer gradient runs due to the impact on sample throughput. Because the new IC columns are more effi cient, laboratories can optimize their separations to achieve higher resolution, or higher fl ow rates, or both simultaneously.
