Thermal Methods…

Thermal methods of analysis, comprises ofgroup of analytical techniques in whichchanges in physical or chemical properties of asubstance are measured as a function oftemperature.

Types of Thermal Methods

Page 7: Thermo Gravimetric Analysis (TGA)

TGA

Thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) isa technique in which a change inweight of a substance is measured asa function of temperature.

Page 8: Thermo Gravimetric Analysis (TGA)

DTA

Differential thermal analysis is atechnique in which the temperaturedifference between a substance and areference material is measured as afunction of temperature.

Page 9: Thermo Gravimetric Analysis (TGA)

DSC

Differential scanning calorimetry is atechnique in which a change in heatenergy between a substance and areference material is measured as afunction of temperature.

EGA

Evolved gas analysis, in which qualitativeand quantitative evaluations of volatileproducts formed during thermal analysisof TGA or DTA or DSC interfaced with FTIRor MS.

Principle of TGA….

Principle of Thermo Gravimetry:

Thermo Gravimetry (TG) or Thermo GravimetricAnalysis(TGA), is an analytical technique inwhich a change in the weight of a substance isrecorded as a function of temperature.

Page 13: Thermo Gravimetric Analysis (TGA)

Thermogram or TG Curve….

Thermo gravimetric analysis results areexpressed in the form of, a thermogram ora thermo gravimetric curve, which is a plot ofweight percentage Vs. temperature

Page 14: Thermo Gravimetric Analysis (TGA)

Derivative TG Curve…

Derivative thermo gravimetric (DTG) curveis the plot of first derivative of the TGcurve vs. temperature. It is also known asa decomposition curve.

Different regions in TG Curve

Horizontal portions (Plateaus) indicateregions where there is no weight loss.

Curved portions indicate regions ofweight loss.

Different types of TG Curves

(i). No Decomposition with loss of

volatile products

(ii). Rapid initial mass loss characteristic

of desorption or drying

(iii). Decomposition in single stage

(iv). Multi stage decomposition

(v). Multi stage decomposition but no

stable intermediate

(vi). Gain in weight due to sample

reaction

(vii). Reaction product decompose

again.
