Significance of solar energy
Fossil fuel reserves will become more andmore important over the next few years andfor this reason regenerative energy sourceswill become vital.
For the good of the next generations, theclimate targets and the reduction of CO2emissions must become the responsibilityof everyone in our society.
Solar energy helps to conserve resources, isavailable to a sufficient extent and helps toavoid CO2 emissions.
Solar energy is thus one of the mostpromising energy sources and should beused to full advantage.
All over the world, solar plants becomemore and more important for hot waterpreparation and heating system support.
Solar plants require little maintenance. Theyare not only crisis-proof and a calculablefuture investment but also enable their usersto circumvent oil and gas price increases toa certain extent. Last but not least, solarplants create work places.
Advantages of solar plants:- protection of the environment as resourcesare conserved and CO2 emissions areavoided
- increased value of real estate
- increased independence
- crisis-proof
Oventrop systems for solar thermal energyare suitable for hot water preparation, heating system support and process heatsupply.
The Oventrop solar systems andcomponents such as collectors, stationsand accessories can be combined withexisting appliances which need not bereplaced. The systems allow for individual solar plantconfigurations.
The common solar plants are not only usedfor hot water preparation but also forheating system support. As a major part ofenergy in a house is used for the heatingsystem, the combination “hot waterpreparation plus support of the heatingsystem” offers the highest potential ofenergy saving.

Solar hot water preparation andsupport of the heating system
Function of a solar thermal plant for hotwater preparation
The heat transfer liquid is heated by the sunvia the collector absorber. The solar liquid istransported by the station’s circulationpump to the lower heat exchanger, forinstance a bivalent potable water storagecylinder, where heat is transmitted to thepotable water. The circulation pump in the solar circuit isonly activated by the solar controller if thetemperature in the collector is higher thanthe temperature in the lower section of thestorage cylinder. The temperature differenceis detected by temperature sensors at thecollector and the bivalent storage cylinder.Depending on the temperature difference, the flow rate of the solar liquid is increasedor reduced. This way, an optimum solar heatreturn and suitable temperatures inside thestorage cylinder are achieved. In central Europe up to 60-70% of the energydemand for hot water preparation can besaved. If solar radiation is not intense enough forhot water preparation, the required energymust be supplied by another heatingsystem.1 Basic illustration of a solar plant for hotwater preparation2 Switching diagram with bivalent potablewater storage cylinder
Function of a solar thermal plant for hotwater preparation and support of theheating system
The function of a solar thermal plant forsupport of the heating system is similar tothat of a solar plant for hot waterpreparation described before. The collectorsurface of a solar plant for support of theheating system is larger than that for hotwater preparation only. Correctly dimensioned and installed solarplants can supply up to about 15 – 20% ofthe total energy demand (hot waterpreparation and support of the heatingsystem). Heat storage is different. The heat isstored in solar buffer storage cylinders forinstance. Hot water preparation is carried outby heat exchanger stations “Regumaq X”. Integration of the heating system isfrequently carried out by a returntemperature increase of the heating circuit. If the temperature in the storage cylinder ishigher than the heating return temperature,a three-way diverting valve “Tri-D TR” isoperated and leads the heating returnthrough the storage cylinder where it heatsthe water. If the storage cylindertemperature is too low, the heating return iswarmed up by the conventional heatingsystem.1 Basic illustration of a solar plant withheating system support2 Switching diagram with returntemperature increase

The tube collector “OKP-10/20” is a heatpipe tube collector which distinguishes itselfby a permanent heat transport. Due to itshydronic features, the collector can be fixedto the building (pitched or flat roof, facadeor detached) with an inclination of the axisbetween 15° and 75°. The tube collector can be used for heating ofpotable or swimming pool water, solarsupport of the heating system and theproduction of process heat.Due to the high-selective absorber surface, ahigh solar share is achieved. The vacuum inside the tube guaranteesmaximum insulation. The high qualitycorrosion resistant materials ensure a longservice life of the tube collector“OKP-10/20”.1 Tube collector “OKP-10/20”tested to DIN EN 12975 and certifiedaccording to “SolarKeymark”. According tothe ITW basic rules, the annual collectorheat return amounts to 683 kW h/m². Thecollector heat return forecast is based on anaperture surface area of 3 m² (small illustr.:Foot rail with stainless steel angular platefor additional protection of the vacuumtubes on the roof)2 Illustrated section tube collector
“OKP-10/20”Function:
- Sunlight is absorbed and converted into heat- Heat is transmitted to the heat pipe via theheat conducting steel sheet inside theglass tube
- Liquid inside the heat pipe evaporates;steam rises into the condenser
- Heat is transmitted to the passing heattransfer medium via the double tube heatexchanger (collector) in which thecondenser is located
- Liquid inside the condenser condensesdue to the heat output, flows back insidethe heat pipe and the procedure isrepeated

The flat-platecollector can be mounted horizontally andvertically and is suitable for rooftop installation, roof integration and freestanding installation(flat roof installation).Depending on the type of installation, basicsets for two collectors, extension sets foreach additional collector and an individualcollector set are available. Thepreassembled rail systems for rooftop andflat roof installation allow a quick andrational installation on site. All fixing elements are easily accessible andallow a time-saving installation. The absorber made of aluminium heatconducting steel sheet and copper pipe isconnected to the solar circuit via twocollector connections with G ½ male thread. The flat-plate collectors are connected withone another by using flexible stainless steelcorrugated pipes. Thermal conditionalexpansions are compensated at the sametime. 1 Flat-plate collector “OKF-CK22” tested toDIN EN 12975 and certified according to“SolarKeymark”. According to the ITW basicrules, the annual collector heat return amountsto 499 kW h/m². The collector heat returnforecast is based on an aperture surfacearea of 5 m².2 ComparisonAntireflective glass (“OKF-CK22”) standardglass (“OKF-CS22”)The antireflective glass of the flat-platecollector “OKF-CK22” increasestransmission by 5%. Especially during winter, with an inclined incidence of light, thetransmission is improved considerablycompared with standard glass. „Regumaq X-30-B“The Oventrop station “Regumaq X-30-B” is anelectronically controlled product assembly withheat exchanger for the hygienic heating ofpotable water on the flow principle. Thepotable water is only heated at the time when itis needed, i.e. “just in time”. A hot potablewater reserve is thus not necessary. The product assembly allows an optimumrealisation of regenerative pipeworkconfigurations. The stations are especiallysuitable for detached and semi-detachedhouses. They are connected to buffer storagecylinders which are heated up by solarenergy, solid fuels, gas or oil. Depending on the temperature and the flowvolume on the potable water side (secondarycircuit), the circulation pump on the bufferside (primary circuit) is speed regulated. The plate heat exchanger can be flushedusing the fill and drain cocks integrated in theprimary and secondary circuit. Due to theturbulent flow, a good self-cleaning effectavoiding a contamination is achieved. The potable water circuit is protected by a 10bar safety valve. The leak tested components of the heatexchanger system have flat sealingconnections and are mounted on a board.
“Regumaq XZ-30-B”The Oventrop station “Regumaq XZ-30-B” forheating of potable water is identical to thestation “Regumaq X-30”, but the productassembly for the operation of circulationsystems is additionally equipped with acirculation pump in the potable water circuit. The controller is fully cabled with the internalelectric components and serves to control thefollowing additional functions:- Demand: The circulation function isactivated if water is drawn off for a shortperiod
- Cycle: The circulation pump runs accordingto the set time switching
- Temperature control: the circulation pumpruns dependant on the return temperature
- Three switching points within thecorresponding operating mode can beprogrammed each day

“Regucor WHS” Energy storage centre“Hydrocor” Storage cylinders
Heating systems with regenerative energysources consist of various components. They are often installed separately andhave to be coordinated. This problem is solved by the Oventropenergy storage centre “Regucor WHS”. Itconsists of a heating water storage cylinderfor efficient heat storage and componentswhich are hydraulically coordinated. Theheat management of the integrated systemcontroller guarantees an optimuminteraction between the heating waterstorage cylinder and all other components. The “Regucor WHS” which allows a time-and space-saving installation can beconnected to different heat generators. TheOventrop energy storage centre “RegucorWHS” consists of:- Solar station- Hot water preparation- Heating circuit connection- Heat storage- Heat generator connection
(e.g. boiler, heat pump etc.)1 Energy storage centre “Regucor WHS”
The storage cylinder stores the water heatedby solar energy.Buffer storage cylinders are available assolar buffer storage cylinder with internalheat exchanger for the solar circuit or aspure buffer storage cylinder without heatexchanger. The most common potable water storagecylinders in a solar plant are referred to asbivalent storage cylinders as the storagecylinder cannot only be loaded with the helpof solar energy but it can also be reloadedby another energy source. This type of storage cylinder features two internal heatexchangers. The bivalent storage cylinders for potablewater should not be oversized as this presents a risk of germs and hygiene canbe impaired. The rule-of-thumb for dimensioning in Central Europe is as follows:Hot water preparation:

1 Oventrop support their partners withtheoretical and practical seminars.Competent instructors report on currentguidelines, standards and possiblestatesponsorships.Practical examples clarify the correct designand the useful integration of Oventropcomponents and complete systems for thesolar circuit, hot water preparation andsupport of the heating system (includingunderfloor and wall heating).2 The design of a solar plant can be carriedout online in the software menu of theOventrop homepage www.oventrop.de.Distinction is made between hot waterpreparation and hot water preparation withsupport of the heating system. A worldwideclimate data bank can be accessed. Thenumber of collectors and the suitablestorage cylinder size are calculatedaccording to the consumption-related datafor instance number of persons, heat loador energy consumption. The calculationsupplies information on the heat return, share and CO2 savings.3 The efficiency of a solar thermal plantdepends on the hydronic integration anddimensioning. Especially the solar networkhas to be designed to the optimum to avoida reduction of the efficiency by unnecessarilyhigh pump outputs. Dimensioning of thecomponents is carried out with the help ofthe Oventrop solar calculation programme“OVsol”. Depending on the choice of a highor low flow system, the programmedetermines the volume flow, the pipediameter, the pump head and the volume ofthe diaphragm expansion tank. Above all,the presetting values of solar doubleregulating and commissioning valves for thehydronic balance of several collector fieldscan be calculated. Both programmes can be downloaded orused on the Oventrop homepage free ofcharge.
