Background• Thermal management is addressed through
experimentation or prior knowledge.• As projects become more novel, fewer
available products meet project needs.• Custom components can be created to meet
need but how they might perform is unknown.• Simulations allow issues to be addressed
prior to investing resources into prototyping and experiments.
• Addressing possible issues through simulation may cut costs and save time.
Objective• Develop a comprehensive guide for thermal
simulations using available CAD and FEA software complete with overview, step-by-step process, and troubleshooting.
Simulations and Guide
Future Work• Distribute Guide for feedback and
additional data for troubleshooting• Inclusion of other available simulation
software, i.e. SolidWorks and ANSYS• Expansion on Troubleshooting section as
issues arise.• Ongoing maintenance such as possible
editing as needed with software patches and newer editions.

Design Flow Guide• Contains three sections, Overview, Simulation, and
Troubleshooting• Overview – provides a general understanding of what
thermal simulations can provide, some thermodynamics vocabulary, reference charts, and a high-level flow chart of the process.
• Simulation – a detailed, step-by-step process for setting up a thermal simulation and obtaining usable results
• Troubleshooting – Details common issues experienced during development and how to address them. Will be updated periodically as more issues arise.

Process• Learn and understand Fusion 360 Simulation
environment.• Initial focus on Fusion 360 due to free
Student License.• Create and Import 3D Model for Simulation• Hours of tutorials and Googling• Complete initial run of Simulation, take notes• Do it again, capture screenshots for guide• Create Guide
