WATER PUMPS: TOUGH DEMANDS

Water pumps are absolutely essential for coolant-cooled engines and they make an important contribution to the safety and smooth functioning of a vehicle. Consequently the technical demands placed on them are particularly high, a situation partly caused by vast temperature differences, fluctuations in pressure and high coolant flow.

ELECTRICAL WATER PUMPS: THEIR PROPERTIES

The vast majority of today's passenger cars is currently still equipped with mechanically driven water pumps, which are connected with the drive via belts.

Modern electrical water pumps operate very differently: these regulate the coolant flow in the cooling circuit electronically and independently of the rotation speed of the engine. Therefore no direct engine power is required for the drive.

The modern Behr Hella Service exhaust gas recirculation radia-tors (EGR radiators) make it possible to achieve the tough Euro 6 limit values regarding emissions of nitrogen oxide (NOx).

Exhaust gas recirculation radiators operate along the lines of the following functional principle: One part of the main gas stream between the exhaust manifold and the turbocharger is fed to a special heat exchanger (=EGR radiator) where it is cooled and then once again redirected to the intake air. Through the cooling the combustion temperature in the engine drops, thus bringing about a reduction of the amount of nitrogen oxide.

Construction and functionThe EGR radiator is made either of stainless steel or aluminium and is mounted near the engine. Both the hot exhaust gases and also the coolant can flow into the radiator via the several con-nections available. After the exhaust emissions have cooled down, they are removed from the radiator in metered amounts via the air intake system and then returned to the combustion chamber. This leads to a reduction of nitrogen oxide output upstream of the catalytic converter. Pneumatic and/or electrical actuators on the EGR radiator see to the metering or controlling of the exhaust gas recirculation rate from the radiator to the combustion chamber.
