1. Introduction Ammonium perchlorate (AP) is the most common oxidizer used in composite solid propellants. It possesses of traits such as high oxygen balance, high energy, and excellent ignition and combustion properties. Due to the superior comprehensive performance, it is very difficult to replace AP by another oxidizer. Despite these advantages, there are still two problems in use. One is the hygroscopicity ; another is the much high decomposition temperature (>400 ο C). For hygroscopicity, it is not so serious that to block its application. However, too high decomposition temperature would deteriorate its reactions in condense and gas phase, i.e. pure AP consumes too many heats for sustaining its thermal decomposition. Therefore, adding some solid catalysts to decrease decomposition temperature of AP became a hot research topic since 2003 1)- . In particular, nanometer catalysts exhibited higher catalysis than the micron catalysts )-10) . For example, the AP / Al / hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) propellant was used in the first stage booster for launch of space shuttle, in which a great deal of Fe O severed as combustion catalyst. Of course, there were many biting criticisms successively came from environmental experts because the combustion of those propellants discharged tons of HCl that caused serious air pollution. The results demonstrated that [AP+3%SO4 2- /Fe O ] decomposed to NO , NOCl, N O, HClO , NO, HCl, and H O. For [AN+3%SO4 2- /Fe O ], the decomposition products were massive N O and few H O. Note that there was no NH presented in products, which meant that the decomposition reaction proceeded very completely. According to the detected products, the possible decomposition mechanism of AP and AN were derived. Meanwhile, the catalysis mechanisms of SO4 2- /Fe O were discussed in detail. 1. IntroductionAmmonium perchlorate (AP) is the most common

AbstractAmorphous Fe2O3 nanoparticles were prepared by precipitation method. These nanoparticles were dipped in dilute

sulfuric acid and then were calcined at different temperature. After that, the SO42-/Fe2O3 solid strong acids with particlesize of 30-40nm were fabricated. Thermal analyses were recruited to probe the catalysis of nanometer Fe2O3 andnanometer SO42-/Fe2O3 on decomposition of ammonium perchlorate (AP) and ammonium nitrate (AN). The resultsindicated that in case of AP, the peak temperature decreased by 35.1οC and 98.7οC in use of Fe2O3 and SO42-/Fe2O3 ascatalysts respectively. In the case of AN, the peak temperature lowered by 2.2οC and 18.0οC in use of Fe2O3 and SO42-/Fe2O3as catalysts respectively. DSC-IR analysis were performed to investigate decomposition products of [AP+3%SO42-/Fe2O3] and [AN+3%SO42-/Fe2O3]. The results demonstrated that [AP+3%SO42-/Fe2O3] decomposed to NO2, NOCl, N2O,HClO4, NO, HCl, and H2O. For [AN+3%SO42-/Fe2O3], the decomposition products were massive N2O and few H2O. signature, and low sensitivities etc. HCl and oxychlorideare not contained in combustion products of AN basedpropellants. Moreover, sensitivity of AN is much lowerthan that of AP. For example, pure AN can not be ignitedby flame or heating even if the pressure accesses to 100MPa. Its impact, friction, and shock sensitivities are closedto zero. Meanwhile, it explosion heat accesses 2640 J g-1

and detonation velocity reaches 5270m s-1 (������gcm-3). For AP, its explosion heat is 1112.9 J g-1 and itsdetonation velocity is only 3800m s-1. Thus, AN is a typicalinsensitive energetic material. Despite the superinsensitivity, now it is very early to say we can use AN toreplace AP. In practice, AN had not been applied as mainoxidizer in the propellants of certain type of missile (orrocket, or booster), and it were just slightly used in someformulation of gas generation agents11),12). What doesresults in this? Three inherent defects account for theuselessness of AN13). Firstly, AN presents much morehygroscopicity than AP ; secondly, phase transformationwill occur at low temperature (30-80οC) ; the third, i.e. themost fatal factor, the ignition and combustion performanceof AN based propellants are very poor. They burned soslowly that their combustion could not provide withsufficient thrust to boost the missile to fly at high speed.Therefore, the investigation about AN based propellantswere in silence for many years.

At present, development of Insensitive Ammunitionwas becoming the “protagonist” in fields of militaryscience and technology. Therefore, the studies about howto improve the performance of AN based propellantsproliferated over the past five years. Especially, for betterperformance on the aspect of decomposition andcombustion of AN, many studies were performed but theresults were not satisfactory. In studies about AP, theresearchers found that a good catalyst could alwaysdecrease the decomposition temperature by more than100οC. However, this kind of results could not present inthe studies about AN. If a catalyst could lower thedecomposition temperature of AN by more than 10οC, wethink it exhibited a good catalysis ability. For example,Naya investigated the catalysis of MnO2 on thermaldecomposition of AN14). He found that the catalyst did notwork at higher heating rate (20 οC min-1) ; as the heatingrate was lowered to 2 οC min-1, its catalysis action wasperceived, i.e. the DSC peak temperature of AN doped 4%MnO2decreased by 16οC comparing with that of pure AN ;nevertheless, the propellant added MnO2 as catalyst couldnot be ignited at low pressure (��MPa). In the study ofPopok, he used nano Al and�-Al2O3 as catalyst on thermaldecomposition of AN15). Nano Al and �-Al2O3 decreasedthe peak temperature of AN by 20οC and 7οC respectively.Vargeese investigated the catalysis of CuO, TiO2, and LiF.The results indicated that TiO2 almost showed nocatalysis ; CuO worked a little ; LiF presented a negativeeffect on thermal decomposition of AN16). Hasue studiedthe combustion performance of bis (1H-tetrazolyl) amineammonium salt (BTA ·NH3) and phase-stabilizedammonium nitrate (PSAN) mixture17). He found that themixture could be ignited at pressure of 1MPa, but the

burning rate was very small (��mm s-1). The catalysis ofNaCl, BaCl2, and NaF on combustion of AN/GAPpropellants were also probed by Sinditskii18). He disclosedthat the burning of propellants added with 7%NaCl couldsustain at pressure of 0.5MPa, but the burning rate wasstill less than 1mm s-1. Miyata also confirmed that themixture of AN and aminoguanidinium 5,5’-azobis-1H-tetrazolate (AGAT) (50/50) can be ignited at pressure of0.5MPa, but the burning rate was only closed to1mm s-1 19). Although abovementioned results wereunsatisfactory, the research about AN based propellantswas rejuvenated.

Now we found that since 2011, the studies about APdecreased but the researches about AN increased. Inparticular the researchers from Russia, Japan, and Indiapaid more attention on AN based propellants20)-23). In thispaper, after studied the decomposition mechanism of APand AN in detail, we proposed that solid strong acid mayexhibit good catalysis ability because their super highacidity may strongly promote the decomposition. So weenlisted TG-DTG-DSC and DSC-IR technology to affirmthe suggestion.

2. Experimental2.1 Sample preparation

With violent stirring, Fe(NO3)3 solution was dropped into6mol/L NH3·H2O solution that originally contained 10%ethanol as dispersant agent. pH value was adjusted to 9-10,and then red brown precipitation (Fe(OH)3) was obtained.After aging 24h, the precipitation was washed with H2Othree times ; then it was washed with ethanol two times ;finally, it was washed with acetone one time. Afterlavation, the precipitation was dried at 50οC. The driedpowder was carefully grinded in agate mortar, and thenthe amorphous Fe2O3tiny particles were gained.

With stirring and ultrasonic, 2 g amorphous Fe2O3 wasput into sulfuric acid solution and dipped in 30min. Afterdipping, the amorphous Fe2O3 was filtrated out and driedat 80οC. The dried powders were grinded and calcined at300οC, 400οC, 500οC, or 800οC, and then solid strong acidswere obtained. This solid acid was marked as “SO42-/Fe2O3”.

In order to investigate the catalysis of SO42-/Fe2O3 ondecomposition of AP and AN, four samples were prepared.(1) 0.97 g AP was blended with 0.03 g SO42-/Fe2O3 bycarefully manual grinding, and the obtained sample wastagged as [AP+3%SO42-/Fe2O3]. (2) For comparing,another 0.97 g AP was also blended with 0.03 g Fe2O3 bycarefully manual grinding, and the gained sample wastagged as [AP+3%Fe2O3]. (3) 0.97 g AN was blended with0.03 g SO42-/Fe2O3 by carefully manual grinding, and theobtained sample was tagged as [AN+3%SO42-/Fe2O3]. (4)For comparing, another 0.97 g AN was also blended with0.03 g Fe2O3 by carefully manual grinding, and the gainedsample was tagged as [AN+3%Fe2O3].

2.2 Methods and measurementsThe morphology was observed with a field-emission

scanning electron microscope (SEM, JEOL JSM-7500). The

phases of the samples were investigated with an X-raydiffractometer (XRD, Bruker Advance D8), using Cu K_�radiation at 40 kV and 30mA. XPS analysis wasperformed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS),PHI5000 Versa-Probe (ULVAC-PHI). TG-DSC analysis andDSC-IR analysis were carried out by using a thermalanalyzer system (TG/DSC, Mettler Toledo) coupled with aFourier transform infrared spectrometer.

3. Results and discussion3.1 Morphology and structure

The XRD analyses were performed and the resultswere illustrated in Figure 1. It was indicated that theamorphous powder did not transform into crystal phaseafter calcined at 300οC or 400οC. When the temperatureclimbed to 500οC, �-Fe2O3 formed and its average grainsize was 24.9 nm. When the temperature increased to800οC, the peak intensity became very strong and itsaverage grain size was more than 100nm. In Figure 1 (b),XRD patterns of two samples were compared. One wasthe powder underwent surface acidification in sulfuric acid(SO42-/Fe2O3), and another was the powder withoutsurface acidification (Fe2O3). The result showed that thepeak intensity of Fe2O3 was stronger than that of SO42-/Fe2O3, which meant that surface acidification could retardthe crystallization of Fe2O3. Average grain size of Fe2O3

was 29.8 nm.Figure 2 (a) is the XPS spectrum of SO42-/Fe2O3 that

was the powder subjected to acidification in 0.3mol/Lsulfuric acid and calcined in 500οC (Figure 2 (b) is theexpansion of Figure 2 (a)). In XPS spectrum, threeelements of O, Fe, and S were detected. Fe and O peakslocated at binding energy of 706.7eV and 529.9eVrespectively, which should reflect to the elements in Fe2O3

because their peak intensity was very strong. The peak atbinding energy of 168.5eV shouldrelate to 2p electron transition ofS element. The S element shouldorigin from the SO42- radical onthe surface of SO42-/Fe2O3. Thisimplied that SO42- had been fixedon the surface of Fe2O3 afteracidification.

To disclose the micronmorphology and particle size ofSO42-/Fe2O3, SEM analysis wereperformed and SEM images ofsamples with and without surfaceacidification were showed inFigure 3. Figure 3 (a) imaged thesample without acidification (Fe2O3). Fe2O3with particles size of 30~ 40nm were agglomerate.Figure 3 (b) indicated thatparticles size of SO42-/Fe2O3wereat nano scale. SO42- /Fe2O3

particles were also agglomerateeach other. Therefore, we hadenough reason to reconsider the

drying process in fabrication of SO42-/Fe2O3. Freeze-drying or supercritical drying may be more feasible. If wecould use freeze-drying or supercritical technology to drythe power, we might obtain the particles with betterdispersion. The particle size distribution was obtained bycarefully measure the specific size of each particle in SEMimages (Figure 3 (a) and Figure 3 (b)), in which thenumber of the particles that were gauged was more than120 for each sample. The measurement was carried out bysoftware based on Equation 1. Then the data weredisplayed as a statistic figure (Figure (3c) and Figure (3d)).It indicated that Fe2O3 and SO42-/Fe2O3 have their meanparticle size of 27nm and 25nm respectively. This wasaccordance with result in XRD analysis, i.e. surfaceacidification slightly retarded the growth of particles (orgrains).

3.2 Thermal analysisCatalysis of SO42-/Fe2O3 was probed with thermal

analyses and the results were illustrated in Figure 4.Figure 4 (a) showed that DSC trace of raw AP comprisedone endothermic peak and two exothermic peaks, whichrefer to the phase transformation and thermaldecomposition of AP. For [AP+3%Fe2O3], the peaks forphase transformation and low temperature decompositionchanged seldom compared with those of pure AP. Thepeak temperature of high temperature decompositiondecreased by 35.1οC and the decomposition heatsincreased. For [AP+3%SO42-/Fe2O3], compared with pure

AP, the phase transformation peak did not move but theexothermic peak temperature decreased by 98.7οC ;meanwhile, the peaks for low and high temperaturedecomposition incorporated in one exothermic peak.These results meant that the catalysis action of nanometerSO42-/Fe2O3 was higher than that of nano Fe2O3. Figure 4(b) illustrated the TG-DTG curves of samples, in which theDTG curves were obtained by derivation calculus to TGcurves. In terms of the curves, the difference among thesamples was obvious. The DTG peak of [AP+3%SO42-/Fe2O3] was stronger than others, and it was of the highestvalue of ������ ����. This implied that the decompositionrate of [AP+3%SO42-/Fe2O3] was faster. The peak pointsin DTG curves, where the ������ ���� located, were closedto the peak points in DSC curves respectively.

Figure 4 (c) indicated thatthere were four endothermicpeaks and no exothermic peaks inDSC trace of pure AN. The peakat 52.4οC reflected to a phasetransformation (phase III tophase II, ������� J g-1). Thepeak at 125.8οC also refer to aphase transformation (phase II tophase I, ������ J g-1). Thepeak at 167.2οC related to meltingcourse of AN (�����J g-1).The strongest endothermic peakreflected to thermaldecomposition of AN. Thedecomposition began at 239.2οCand showed its peak point at277.4οC (��������J g-1). As thefirst step of condense phasereaction, NH3 (g) and HNO3 (g)would form by dissociation of NH4

NO3. This dissociation coursewould absorb heat of 2.18kJ·g-1 24).Although subsequent reactionswere exothermic, the releasedheat was less than 2.18kJ·g-1. So,the whole decomposition of ANwas endothermic. Therefore,pure AN can not be ignited in airor in N2 because itsdecomposition is not self-sustained. This is why ANpresents much low sensitivities.In addition, we could find thatnanometer Fe2O3 and nanometerSO42-/Fe2O3 did not change thedecomposition process of AN,because the DSC curve of [AN+3%Fe2O3] or [AN+3%SO42-/Fe2O3 ] also exhibited fourendothermic peaks (two to phasetransformation, one to melting,and one to thermaldecomposition). This meant that

adding nano catalyst could not change the reaction heatsin thermodynamics. However, comparing with pure AN,the decomposition peak of AN doped 3%SO42-/Fe2O3

decreased by 18.0οC ; and the nano Fe2O3 almost showedno catalysis because the peak temperature only decreasedby 2.2οC. This meant that the existence of SO42- (instead ofpure Fe2O3) favored to thermal decomposition of AN.Figure 4 (d) showed the TG-DTG curves of pure AN, [AN+3%Fe2O3], and [AN+3%SO42-/Fe2O3]. There was notdistinct difference in TG curves. After derivation calculus,the DTG curves were gained and the curve depicted thedecomposition rate of samples. Their DTG peak profilewas as similar as that of DSC peaks.

3.3 Catalysis mechanismBy means of DSC-IR analysis, we investigated

decomposition products for [AP+3%SO42-/Fe2O3] and [AN+3%SO42-/Fe2O3] and the results were showed in Figure 5.For [AP+3%SO42-/Fe2O3], we intercepted the IR spectraat 221.8οC, 296.1οC, 341.5οC, 346.8οC, and 351.9οC,respectively. From Figure 5 (b), it was found that thedecomposition products were NO2, NOCl, N2O, HClO4, NO,HCl, and H2O. In particular, the peak intensity of NO2,NOCl, and N2O were much stronger than that of others. InReference25), Cl2and O2usually formed in decomposition ofAP. However, these non-polar molecules can not bedetected by IR technology. Thus, we also considered therewere some Cl2 and O2 generated. According to theproducts, the decomposition reactions of [AP+3%SO42-/Fe2O3] were deduced (i.e. Equations 2 and 3). Obviously,despite existence of some HClO4, NH3were not detected inthe products. It meant that the oxidation of NH3proceededvery completely. We inferred that the generated NH3 gasadsorbed on the surface of AP and nanometer SO42-/Fe2O3. Especially, when ���(SO42-/Fe2O3) was much lowerthan ���(NH3), the reaction of NH3+H+⇌NH4+ occurred(The parameter “���”, which can be used to quantify thestrength of an acid, is called acidity coefficient. Each acidhas its own “���” value.). This reaction meant that a partof NH3 could be fixed as condense phase on the surface ofnanometer SO42-/Fe2O3. This benefited to the oxidation ofNH3 because it avoided the cessation of AP decompositionby NH3 poisoning. Hence, the decomposition of [AP+3%SO42-/Fe2O3] only showed one exothermic peak in DSCtrace.

For [AN+3%SO42-/Fe2O3], weintercepted the IR spectra at161.5οC, 215.7οC, 238.8οC, 264.9οC,286.3οC, and 345.7οC, respectively (inFigure 5 (b)). Figure 5 (d) revealedthat the decomposition products of[AN+3%SO42-/Fe2O3] were N2Oand seldom H2O. This meant thedecomposition proceeded verycompletely. In theory,decomposition of AN complies withionic reactions (Equations 4~7) orradical reactions (Equations 8~10).The gas product of both thechannels was N2O, which consistedwith our experimental results.Distinctly, at low temperature,thermal decomposition of AN wouldcomply with ionic reactions sincethe rupture of O-N bond (i.e.Equation 8 would happen only attemperature more than 1300οC. Inionic mechanism, the reaction ofEquation 5 was the limiting step

because their rate constants were very small. So if weintroduced some strong acid (HA, �����������(HNO3))into the decomposing AN, the reaction of NO3-+H+⇌HNO3 would happen due to the principle of chemicalreplacement of weak acid by strong acid. This wouldconsiderably increase the concentration of HNO3 in thedecomposition system, which resulted in a remarkablepromotion on the key reactions (i.e. Equations 5~7).Therefore, the decomposition of AN was accelerated.Especially, when ����������� ( HNO3 ) , thedecomposition of HNO3 would be changed (see Equation11).

The “strong acids” are several kinds of solid acids whoseacidity are much higher than that of 100% H2SO4.Generally, their ��� are less than -11.9326),27). In industry,many organic synthesis reactions must use acid ascatalyst. Comparing with liquid acid, solid acids are ofadvantages such as high catalysis, high selectivity,pollution-free, as well as easy to separate from reactionsystem. Thus, they have a bright application prospect inorganic industry. Mainly, there are four kinds of solid acidthat are classified as strong acid. Kind 1 is the supportedheteropoly acids, such as HF-SbF5-AlF3/Al2O3, SbP3-Pt/Graphite, SbP3-HF/F-A12O3, SbF5-FSO3H/Graphite, and soon. Kind 2 is the mixture of inorganic salts, such as AlCl3-CuCl2, MCl3-Ti2(SO4)3, A1C13-Fe2(SO4)3, and so on. Kind 3 is

acid metal oxide coated with SO42-, such as SO42-/ZrO2,SO42-/TiO2, SO42-/Fe2O3, etc. Kind 4 is composition ofmetal oxides, such as WO3/ZrO2, MoO3/ZrO2, etc. All thesolid strong acids show their��� are less than -10 at lest.However, the reason why they process of so strong acidityis obscure. Meanwhile, the different kind of strong acidmay have different reason. In my study, we pay moreattention to the strong acid of kind 3, because it can beeasily prepared and their particle sizes are easilycontrolled in nanometer scale. According to the studies ofGuo28)and Wang29), they considered that due to the stronginductive effects of S=O group, the adsorbed H2Ocontributes as Brφnsted acid center. The surface acid sitesare associated with the metal ions whose acidic strengthcan be strongly enhanced by induction effect of S=Ogroups (please see Figure 6).

In addition, solid strong acids do not like traditionalacids that can form a mass of H+ ions when they dissolveinto water. For solid strong acid, Brφnsted acid centers areonly existent on their surface. The centers work only if themolecular of reactant(s) absorbed on the surface of thecatalyst. Thus, this kind of catalysis is not homogeneouscatalysis but rather heterogeneous catalysis. Of course,the acid groups on the surface of solid strong acid can be“apperceived” by the reactions with some chemical agents.For example, a suitable method for determining the acidstrength of solid acid may be “Steam Method” reported byLi26). In Li’s study, the agents, such as m-nitrotoluene(����������), p-nitrochlorobenzene (����������), m-nitrochlorobenzene (���������� ) , anddinitrofluorobenzene (���������), were used asindicators.

In fact, for solid strong acid, its preparation method andthe acid strength (very high) had become a commonrecognition early. Thus, this paper took more efforts onthe catalysis ability and catalysis mechanism of solidstrong acid on thermal decomposition of AP and AN. Asfor the property and the function of these acid groups (onthe surface of solid acid particles), I think these had beenclearly elucidated in many references (just likeReference26)-29)).

In fact, plenty of Lewis acid points and Bronsted acidpoints were co-existent on the surface of nanometer SO42-

/Fe2O3. However, what really matters was not Lewis acidbut Bronsted acid because pure nano Fe2O3 did notpresent some catalysis action (there are so many Lewisacid points on the surface of nano Fe2O3). The liquid H2O,which generated from decomposition of AN, could enablethe transformation (Lewis acid transforms to Bronstedacid). However, the liquid H2O could also make the SO42-

lose from the surface. Thus, the H2O in condense phasecould obviously weaken the catalysis of nanometer SO42-/Fe2O3. In fact, Sun et al had reported that some inorganicacids such as concentrated sulfuric acid and concentratedhydrochloric acid could promote the decomposition of AN ;and the catalysis action of hydrochloric acid weredistinctly higher than that of sulfuric acid26). The catalysismechanism of inorganic acids had been elucidated above.But we can not added liquid acid into a propellant becausethe processing property of the propellant will bedeteriorated. Hence, using solid acid may be a betterchoice. Moreover, in terms of acidity, the �� of solidstrong acid (~-14) was far less than �� of sulfuric acid(�������) and hydrochloric acid (�������). Thus,solid strong acid may show higher catalysis action thanthose liquid acids. Meanwhile, the processing property ofpropellants will not be affected by adding little solid strongacid.

Overall, the catalysis action of SO42- / Fe2O3

nanoparticles was not as excellent as expectation.According to the reported studies, its catalysis abilityshould be lower than metal nanoparticles (especial nanoCu) but higher than traditional metal oxides. However,owing to the very low cost in fabrication and storage,using solid strong acids as catalysts is worthy to beattempted. Moreover, there are so many kinds of solidstrong acid that could exhibit different catalysis ability.Hence, this study is just a beginning of these.

4. ConclusionsSO42- / Fe2O3 nanoparticles were prepared by

precipitation-dipping method. XRD analysis indicated thatthe amorphous Fe2O3 transformed to �-Fe2O3 aftercalcined at 500οC. By using JADE5.0 software, the averagegrain size of SO42-/Fe2O3 was calculated. SEM imagesshowed that the particle size of SO42-/Fe2O3 was 30-40nm.XPS analysis presented that after acidification, the SO42-

was fixed well on the surface of Fe2O3.Thermal analyses were performed to probe thermal

decomposition of [AP+3%Fe2O3], [AP+3%SO42-/Fe2O3],[AN+3%Fe2O3], and [AN+3%SO42-/Fe2O3]. The resultsindicated that SO42-/Fe2O3presented higher catalysis thannano Fe2O3. DSC-IR analyses were employed to detect thegas products for thermal decomposition of [AP+3%SO42-/Fe2O3] and [AN+3%SO42-/Fe2O3]. Via analyzing the IRspectra of gas products, we found that the gases such asNO2, NOCl, N2O, HClO4, NO, HCl, and H2O generated indecomposition of [AP+3%SO42-/Fe2O3]. For [AN+3%SO42-

/Fe2O3], the main gas products were N2O and seldom H2O,which meant that the decomposition reaction proceededvery completely. According to the detected products, thepossible decomposition mechanism of AP and AN werederived. Meanwhile, the catalysis actions of SO42-/Fe2O3

were discussed in detail.
