New federally mandated fuel economy standards.

The Federal Government recently announced the first-ever regulations setting heavy-duty truck fuel efficiency standards, intended to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions from heavy trucks by as much as 23%.

Heavy-duty truck standards will average about a 20% reduction in both measures by model year 2018, depending on a truck’s payload, the Department of Transportation said.

The standards are targeted to save truckers up to 4 gallons of fuel for every 100 miles traveled, the DOT said in a statement.

Administration officials expect the standards to save 530 million barrels of oil from 2014 to 2018, and save vehicles $50 billion in fuel costs.*

At Shell, we understand the importance of fuel economies to come. But we are also doing something right now about maximizing your fuel dollar. For over 40 years, Shell Rotella® heavy-duty diesel engine oils have worked hard to deliver protection, performance and fuel economy. The Shell Lubricants Team also offers a full line of innovative services like Shell LubeVideoCheck, Shell LubeCoach and Shell LubeAnalyst to make sure you’re getting the most out of every gallon of fuel for your fleet.

practical tips for improving fuel economy:

Avoid Excessive Idling: 1 hour = approximately 1% reduced fuel economy

Slow Down: Every mph over 55 costs 0.1 mpg

plan your routes. Going out of your way to reach a destination costs you money

Check your tire pressure: Properly inflated tires reduce rolling resistance

Check your air filter and intake system: A dirty air filter may reduce engine efficiency

Check your truck-trailer gap: A smaller gap improves aerodynamics – 36” is optimal

Service your Diesel particulate Filter System: Proper maintenance keeps your exhaust system performing at its best and reduces potential flow restriction.

THERE ARE TWO SIDES TO FUEL ECONOmy: COmmON SENSE AND SCIENCE.

The science of how a good heavy duty engine oil can improve your fuel economy.

Approximately 50% of fuel energy is lost as heat through the exhaust cooling systems. Approximately 5% is dissipated through engine friction and pumping losses – leaving roughly 45% available as engine output. This energy is used to overcome the following factors: Aerodynamic drag, rolling resistance, drive train friction, accessories operation, inertial forces. This is why properly lubricated parts and moving surfaces are essential.

Page 6: THERE’S NO BETTER FLEET BUSINESS …€™S NO BETTER FLEET BUSINESS RESOURCE THAN THE HARDWORKING ONE. SHELL ROTELLA®. THE ENGINE OIL THAT WORKS AS HARD AS y OU. SHELL HAS BEEN

HOW TO ImpROvE yOUR FUEL ECONOmy

How hardworking heavy-duty engine oils can impact your fuel economy:

n Minimizing friction and viscous losses in the engine, in bearing contact areas

n Lowering the energy wasted through pumping “thicker” oils

n The thickness (viscosity) of all oils varies with temperature – the hotter the oil, the lower the viscosity

n If the oil is too thick, you get power loss/drag

n If the oil is too thin, you get high friction and wear

n Different parts of the engine operate at different temperatures: ring, valve train and bearings are hotter than oil sump, engine block/oil galleries and oil pump

Hardworking synthetic lubricants may improve fuel economy, too:

n Having the right viscosity to protect and lubricate in critical parts of the engine while minimizing friction

n Providing lower viscosity to make it easy to pump and lubricate, and minimize pumping losses (Especially in cold weather climates)

mEASURING FUEL ECONOmy

At Shell, we use high technical and statistical standards for measuring the Fuel Economy (FE) benefits of Heavy Duty Diesel Engine Oils.

n Robust data collection strategy. Shell validates fuel economy claims for its products through statistically designed field/fleet tests.

n Reported data is significant at 95% confidence. This represents a potential fuel savings that is real and not just the “noise” of testing.

n State-of-the-art hardware, software and statistical methodologies are routinely used for Fuel Economy testing.

n Test conditions used to generate Fuel Economy claims are disclosed.

The difficulties of measuring Fuel Economy

It is well established how engine oils can influence fuel economy:

n Minimizing friction and viscous losses in the engine, in bearing/contact areas

n Lowering the energy wasted through pumping “thicker” oils.

While the lubricant used in a truck has a definite influence on fuel consumption, this effect is not always easy to measure because there are many other factors that also have a big influence, such as:

n Idle Time

n Truck components and operating conditions

n Driver behavior and training

n Weather

n Route Patterns and Road / traffic conditions

n Load/GVW

FUEL ECONOmy TRIALS

Shell has validated fuel economy claims for its products through rigorously controlled and statistically designed field tests. Under optimal conditions, Shell would design a closely monitored and highly statistical test protocol for demonstrating fuel economy at your fleet. However, we understand this is not a viable scenario for most fleets, given the demands of everyday operations. That is why we offer below the fundamentals for a fleet to run a fuel economy trial:

n The fleet should already be actively monitoring fuel economy prior to the start of the test.

n Based upon this previous history, the fleet needs to have an established fuel economy baseline for a select group of units that would be available for testing.

n A minimum of 50 trucks is preferable. Run a minimum of 25 trucks on a conventional 15W-40 as a baseline and 25 trucks on the test oil. (The more units included can provide more accurate/valid data).

n Fleet should have been using the current brand/type/viscosity grade of HDEO for the past 12 months.

n The optimal scenario would be to run the test oil for one full drain interval before initiating the fuel economy testing (to minimize 15W-40 carryover). This may not be practical for all fleet applications.

n Test units need to be maintained at the same location.

n Access to (ECM)Electronic Control Module data is preferable, as this allows the separation of the fuel burned during idle and during driving.

n Use of a dedicated driver/unit combinations throughout the trial period is preferred.

n Team drivers are not preferred as this introduces multiple variables to the unit’s operation.

n The units selected should include a variety of engine/drive-train combinations that reflect the make-up of the fleet.

n A variety of route patterns that the fleet currently runs should be included as well. This will allow seeing if better fuel economy is demonstrated between city and (OTR)Over The Road routes.

n Fuel type and source should remain consistent throughout the test period.

n Oil drain intervals and other drive train lubricants must not change through the test period.

n No aerodynamic additions or deletions can be made to the truck or trailer throught the test period.

n No tire changes should be made throught the test period.

FUEL ECONOmy BENEFITS

At Shell, our Lubricants Team operates under one driving principle: Benefits in fuel economy from lower viscosity oils should NOT come at the expense of protection of engines. This is why in trial after trial, in the lab and on the road, Shell Rotella® T5 heavy duty engine oil has not only demonstrated Fuel Economy* benefits, but also offers proven protection for engines.

SHELL ROTELLA® T5 10W-30 HAS BEEN EvALUATED IN mULTIpLE FIELD TESTS SINCE ITS LAUNCH.

Fuel economy means a better bottom line.

A Shell Rotella® Fleet customer recently shared with us some very exciting news. Their cost analysis of over 410 trucks, over a period of twelve months, revealed a fuel economy savings of $1,477.00 per truck for a total of $605,570 – proof that running oil that works as hard as you do really does help your bottom line.

n Data presented here reflects field tests in MY 2008/2009 Detroit Diesel DD15 engines which ran for ~829,000 miles, with oil drains between ~50,000 to ~60,000 miles. Intermediate sampling was conducted throughout the oil drain.

n Shell Rotella® T5 10W-30 was run (4 units) side by side with two different API CJ-4 15W-40 oils (12 units).

n Engine inspections were conducted on two units running Shell Rotella® T5 10W-30 between ~633,000, 654,000 and 829,000 miles and on three units running 15W-40 oils between ~557,000, 567,000 and 623,000 miles.

The engine inspection results obtained at ~633,000, 654,000 and 829,000 miles, in conjunction with the used oil data collected over the entire ~800,000 test miles, indicate that Shell Rotella® T5 10W-30 provided excellent protection against acids and deposits in these engines. Data also shows wear protection was not compromised, when compared to the wear protection given by multiple 15W-40 oils running in the same test.

Oil analysis is one of the most effective ways to monitor the condition of your engine. A regular oil analysis program helps you build an historic database and watch for trends in a variety of areas. Ideally, you want to analyze a sample of used engine oil after every oil change.

Serving as an early warning system, oil analysis can alert you to problems before they become costly headaches. A used engine-oil sample can tell if contaminants such as water, coolant, fuel or dirt are getting into the oil, indicating a head-gasket leak, a leaking fuel injector or other problems. Spectrochemical analysis detects the presence of wear metals in the oil – unusually high amounts of wear metals could be a sign of abnormal wear. The analysis will also measure the oil’s viscosity, base number (reserve alkalinity) and fuel-soot level.

The knowledge gained from a consistent oil analysis program can assist you in optimizing your oil drain interval, help increase equipment reliability, help minimize unscheduled downtime, and more precisely track operating efficiency and maintenance practices. This combination could contribute to lowering your total operating costs. When employing oil analysis, make certain you fill out labels that accompany your sample. Be sure to note if you added any oil between oil drains and what type was used.

Lubricant Dispensing

n All dispensing handles should be properly labelled with the product name and viscosity grade

n All overhead reels should have proper drip containment and secondary product labels

n Properly clean grease dispensing nozzles before and after each use

n Properly clean grease fittings before servicing

Coolants

n Verify the OEM approvals for all coolant applications in your facility

n Review your maintenance schedule and verify that procedures are in place/executed

n Only use a Refractometer to check the coolant freeze-point. Remove all “floating ball” testers and test strips from your shop

n Utilize only a 50/50 premix coolant. If you are using a concentrated coolant, have your water supply tested for mineral content and water hardness

n Never use pre-charged coolant filters (SCAs) with Extended Life Coolants. Only use blank filters with ELC.

n Consider consolidating your heavy-duty coolants applications to one coolant, preferably an extended life coolant, in order to simplify maintenance procedures and lower operational costs
