• To make this happen, the government will legislatethat all mining leases expire completely by 2027

• This will allow plenty of time for world-class landrehabilitation and new job opportunities for workers

• Resolution of a native title and the engagement ofthe Quandamooka people is the key to unlockingland allocation and the future potential of North

Stradbroke Island• The government’s vision for the island will also

address the broader issue of reconciliation with theQuandamooka people

• The vision for North Stradbroke Island includes acommitment to end mining by 2027— howevermuch activity is planned to end sooner

• Jobs in mining rehabilitation will continue long after2027

• Time is needed for the economic transition–there isan extended transition period of 17 years

Yarraman:

• Already scheduled to close by 2015 based on extent

of resources• Represents 100 of the mining jobs on the Island

Vance:

• Mining lease expires in 2025

• Mining activity up to 15 years to run

• Important environmental assets near the lease willbe protected

Enterprise:

• Currently operating on expired leases subject to

renewal applications• Recognise significant staff and capital dependent

on transition

• The government has committed to discuss theearliest practical transition

The economic transition for the island relies on:

• protecting and showcasing natural assets

• nature-based tourism ventures (public andprivate investment will be critical to realise theisland’s tourism potential)

• the recreation and lifestyle market in SEQ

• Eco-resorts and accommodation supporting

access to national parks• High quality walkways – accessible by foot and

bicycle only, lookouts and viewing platforms

• Interactive entertainment and sporting facilities

• 50 per cent of the island will become national park

by the end of 2011• 80 per cent of the island will become national park

by 2027

To achieve national park it will be necessary to:

• plan for resolution of native title with theQuadamooka people

• effectively manage cessation of mining andrehabilitation works to appropriate standard

• There is scope for more than 400 nature-basedtourism jobs to be created during the transition

• New national park, supported by appropriateaccess, will attract new investment

 – Queensland’s national parks attract 16 million visitors per year – Visitor spending associated with national parks is $4.3 billion per

annum, with $749 million per annum in national park-generatedspending

Sustainable jobs and business development:

The vision seeks feedback on:

• the possible provision of additional land for

recreational activities which are not permitted innational parks (motorised sports, camping with dogs,sporting and recreational commercial activities)

• establishing a management regime for recreationalbeach fishing and four wheel driving

• tourism strategies

• township expansion, balanced growth recognisingunique character and community infrastructure

• recreational areas

• boating facilities

What happens next:

• Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA)

development with consent determination targetedfor 2011

• legislation to be passed within next 12 months

• national park declarations in 2010 and 2011

• whole-of-island planning process gets underway
