When Arriva was looking into upgrading a number of routes to a premium status, it asked us to apply our skills, art, science and magic to the project. We were tasked with creating an appropriate, aspirational name, look and feel for this superior bus product that would appeal to hitherto bus sceptics. Thus Sapphire was born.

Working closely with the project team, we created a powerful brand, all the time realising we had to balance sophistication with credibilty. The soft, tonal blue-on-blue

theme, which we carried through to the interior, was an important way to maintain a synergy with the standard Arriva product.

As well as the external livery and internal colours and finishes, cleverly adapted to look good whatever

vehicles it would need to be applied to, we designed a suite of marketing material to advertise, promote and sell Sapphire to the target market.

Our attention to detail and in-depth understanding of the public transport industry meant Arriva could rely on us to analyse sometimes complex bus operations and timetables to find the best way to really promote what was on offer in an easy-to-understand way.

With more routes converted to Sapphire throughout 2013 and 2014, initial results have been more than encouraging, with growth into double figures, proving that suitable

bus services can be made attractive and desirable to new markets while improving the offering for established ones.

A sparkling success story!

Best Impressions was asked to inject a new spirit and give substance and a local focus to an area bus product that had very much lost its shine, if not its way, too.

We came up with the Buses of Somerset (and for town services in the county town the buses of Taunton).

The brand is bringing back a motivational sense of pride in local buses for both passengers and staff and, as importantly, local stakeholders, who now have a much more positive attitude and desire to work with the company.

The colours are rich, luscious and sharp. We have applied modern shades and contemporary lines that work well with the architecture of the mixed fleet (and are not totally trashed when unsympathetic third party advertising is applied).

These colours give a nod to the heritage of bus operation in the area, showing a company that

respects where it came from and providing a firm foundation for going into the future

with confidence and flair.

How a brand communicates can be the make-or-break factor. Best Impressions has a reputation for making complex information look beguiling, attractive

and easy to understand.

In Somerset we’re making sure people understand exactly where their buses go and where to catch them.

In bus stations and timetables we have clear, stylish network route and town centre maps that look attractive and provide excellent wayfinding.

And in Cornwall we are beginning to cast a bit of that Best Impressions’ magic over the First bus network there, making using the bus in this beautiful part of the country an easier and more attractive option for residents and tourists alike.
