MERIT AND NEED BASEDSCHOLARSHIPS

ESSAY WRITING TIPS

Most scholarships offered are merit based and do not con-sider financial need a criteria. Some scholarships arespecifically need based and require that you complete aFree Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Thosescholarships are designated under the scholarship descrip-tion. All students are strongly encouraged to apply forfinancial aid by May 3, 2010, in addition to completing thescholarship application. The 2010-2011 FAFSA is availableonline at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

If you are a recipient of an outside award; meaning ascholarship that is not awarded by the Reedley CollegeFinancial Aid Office or RC Foundation ScholarshipPrograms and/or is not listed on your financial aid awardletter, you must notify the Financial Aid Office.

1. Think before you write. Brainstorm to generate some good ideas then create an outline to get you started.

2. Be original. It's your job to make your essay stand out from the rest so be creative.

3. Show, don't tell. Use examples to individualize your essay and demonstrate your point.

4. Develop a theme. Simply don't list all your achievements. Write about experiences that develop and support your theme.

5. Submit an essay that is neat and readable.Your essay should be double-spaced and typed and should only be one page in length if possible. You may choose to use the online fill-in scholarship application and guarantee your scholarship to be typed neatly and legibly.

6. Proofread your essay! Check your spelling and grammar and share your essay with friends or a teacher. Another pair of eyes can catch errors you might miss.

The Reedley College Writing Center can also assist you with your essay!

Reedley College Foundation

Founded October 19, 1966

The Reedley College Foundation was established to answer the need for a legally constitutedagency to receive scholarship endowments, to manage and invest the contributions, and todisburse funds for the development and general welfare of Reedley College and its students.

Each year the Reedley College Foundation offers more than 75 different scholarship awardsranging from $100-$1000. These gifts come from local families and businesses. The ReedleyCollege Foundation is unique in its ability to provide the services whereby individuals or firmscan establish perpetual scholarships to aid students. Scholarships are paid from the interestearned on invested principal (the principal is never used).

An endowment of $2,000 at 5% interest generates an award of $100, which is the minimumaward given. As interest earnings fluctuate, so does the amount of the scholarship award. However, it is not necessary to deposit the entire $2,000 all at once. Many scholarships havebeen started with less and earned yearly interest until the $100 minimum award can be given.

For more information, please contact Laurie Bolton at (559) 897-7328 or Mary Agrifoglio at (559) 275-3706.

Information Concerning theEstablishment of a Reedley

College Foundation Scholarship

The Foundation is unique in its ability to provide a last-ing memorial whereby individuals or firms can establisha perpetual scholarship to aid students. Scholarships arepaid from the earnings on the endowment once theamount reaches $2,000.00. For example, an endowmentof $2,000.00 at 5% interest generates a scholarship awardof $100.00 per year, the minimum award given. As con-tributions and earnings fluctuate, so does the amount ofthe scholarship award. However, it is not necessary todeposit the $2,000.00 all at once. Many scholarships havestarted with less, been added to from time to time, andearned yearly interest until the $100.00 minimum awardcan be given.

You select the name of the scholarship you wish to estab-lish and outline the criteria you want a student to meet inorder to receive your scholarship. A committee made upof Board members screen and select the students whobest meet that criteria.

Reedley College Foundation scholarships are not justmemorial scholarships. Many civic and educationallyminded persons also establish scholarships in their name.If interested in contributing to an existing scholarship, orestablishing a new scholarship, inquiries can be directedto: Reedley College Foundation, P.O.
