MERRITT HELFFERICH ROTARCTIC VOLUME 16 ISSUE 6 - AUGUST 6, 2015 FOR MORE INFORMATION: HTTP://WIGGLYWINGS.WEEBLY.COM MERRITT HELFFERICH has had a varied career including serving as UA Associate Vice President for Human Resources, UAF Assistant to the Chancellor and Associate Director of the Geophysical Institute. He worked as ballistic meteorologist and assistant supervisor at the Poker Flat Research Range. He is CEO of Innovation Consulting, Inc. as a consultant and project evaluator on public policy, grant funding issues and tribally-controlled education. He graduated from the University of Alaska with a BA and earned a Master of Public Administration degree from Harvard. He has traveled in South and Central America, Asia and Europe hiking the Coast-to-Coast trail in England and on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela in Spain. He bicycled 550 miles from Prague to Vienna to Bratislava and finally to Budapest, worked on the first commercial transit of the Northwest passage, sailed a 25-foot sloop from Vancouver, BC to Valdez, Alaska and captained a hot air balloon for the farthest North flight in the USA in Barrow. He studied goldsmithy in Denmark and has a glacier named for him in Antarctica. He collects and maintains a large library of polar exploration and history books. Merritt will be presenting about his visit to Berlin and discovery of the Candy Bombers’ history, World War II bombing of Germany, destruction of Berlin and status at the end of the war. e 1948 Russian closure of all road, railroad and water access to Berlin plus removal of electricity generation, and the decision by Truman to supply Berlin’s two million people for food, fuel etc. by Air. e story of the year-long Berlin Airliſt and the advent of the Candy Bombers . He had hand-made parachutes that he used. e children called him Uncle Wiggly Wings, because he would wiggle the aircraſt before dropping the candy.

MEET PAULA MORENO - OUR 2015/2016ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE STUDENT!Our Fairbanks Downtown Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) Student for this year is Paula Hervas Moreno. Paula has been in Fairbanks for about three weeks and will be in here approximately a year. Paula is from Jaca, Spain. Jaca is in northeastern Spain approximately a 30-minute drive to the border with France, in the midst of the Pyrenees. The population of Jaca is approximately 13,400. Lowest winter tempature is around 34 °F and highest summer temperature is around 80 °F.

Currently, her host family is Rotarian Jennifer Imus and husband Bryan Imus. The other future host families for Paula this year will be Rotarian Suellen Nelles, and Jerry and Tamara Pollen.

Paula will be attending West Valley High School. She speaks English and Spanish. If you need to improve your Spanish language skills or just curious on how Spanish sounds please talk to Paula. She enjoys hockey, skiing, movies, music, hiking, travelling and is avid novel reader. She is looking forward to experience Alaska. Please take the time to take her out for an activity or family outing.

In Spain, her father is an Army Officer at Regiment Galicia 64 and her mother is a lawyer.
