A brief history of Mill Hill Village Cricket Club

Although Mill Hill Village cricket began officially in 1868, records of the existence of a cricket club in the area are contained in the accounts kept by the incumbent of St Paul’s Church in 1852. There is also reference to a team representing the village against a Mill Hill School XI three years later. The first report of a game in the locality in the Hendon Times was in 1876, when the working men of Mill Hill playing the Hendon Institute of Working Men. In those early years Mill Hill Village were always on the move. Their first home ground was a field opposite the Adam and Eve Public House. By 1887, the Jubilee Year, the fixture between the President’s XI and the club was played at Arran Dene the private ground of the then president, Mr J A Johnson. Further moves followed to the “Donkey Field” near Wills Grove, then Hammers Lane, where St Paul’s Vicarage now stands: on to the foot of Holcombe Hill – at the rear of Bentley’s House, opposite The Forge. During 1908 and 1910 a rift in the club caused a parting of the ways and the formation of two Mill Hill clubs. The Village remained at Holcombe Hill until 1914, whilst Mill Hill CC made their headquarters at Bunns Lane where they remained, until falling out of existence in the early part of this century. Officially renamed Mill Hill Village Cricket Club in 1922, a new ground was found for the club at picturesque Nan Clarke Lane. Here began an era of fine cricket from a great side until the ground was commandeered for military purposes in 1940. During the war years, the Village became a wandering side again before a final move to what has become our permanent home, Burtonhole Lane. There was also another change of name, to Mill Hill Village Cricket and Athletic Club to incorporate the winter activities, football and hockey. In 1968, under the new banner Mill Hill Village Sports Club, came the Centenary celebrations. The Village is a club that has grown up in an area that still retains the rustic beauty of yesteryear. Within it is a family tradition that has seen successive generations of fathers, sons, cousins and nephews all playing, and wives and sweethearts helping with teas, etc. Perhaps the never changing environment of nature has helped to produce this tranquillity and peace.

MHV 1st ELEVEN 2014 SEASON REPORT Another superb season for the 1st XI, culminating in a fourth successive Herts league promotion and a third Divisional title during that period. The Division 7 trophy was wrapped up with two games to spare, a great achievement despite the league season being bookended by defeats in the first and last games of the campaign. Only one other defeat was suffered all season and the record of Played 19, Won 14, Drawn 1, Lost 3, with 1 abandonment, meant that the Village ended the season 55 points clear of their nearest rivals. The league was actually close for most of the season but runs of 8 wins in the middle and then 5 successive victories in August, at the business end of the season, lifted the Village clear of all rivals. The opening day defeat came despite an impressive century from Marcus Cara (126), a first innings team total of 243-8 and an early declaration. Not many games are lost with that sort of total on the board, particularly in early May but Old Camdenians had a ‘ringer’ in their number who scored 146 not out to dominate the game. It was an inauspicious start that continued when the following week’s match was abandoned. The season really got underway in fine style in the third round of games. A glorious sunny day in the quiet and picturesque village of Watton at Stone was the backdrop to one of the most remarkable matches in Mill Hill Village history and indeed the history of the Saracens Herts Cricket League. Records were set for the highest ever aggregate score for a SHCL match, the largest total ever chased to win a match in the Herts League and the highest score ever recorded by any batsman in Division 7. Thankfully the records were in favour of MHV, in a match that will live long in the memory. It was a hot, sweaty and at times chastening 1st innings in the field. Eyebrows were raised when Watton at Stone batted their full entitlement of 53 overs and amassed a very substantial 330, for the loss of just 4 wickets. Having inserted the opposition, as he always does when winning a toss, Skipper Overton could have little to complain about. The same could not be said for the rest of the team, many of whom doubted the wisdom of the decision when the ball was flying to all parts and on many occasions out of the ground altogether. Requiring more than 7 an over from the start, the task became even more problematic when after just 4 balls of the reply, the Village had lost both opening batsmen for ducks. The blessing was that it brought an in-form Marcus Cara to the crease early in the innings and immediately the ball began to fly off the bat. Support was hard to come by however and the score was on 157 when the 5th wicket went down. This brought Phil Smith to the crease and so began the record partnership, which saw the Village cruise to victory with two overs to spare, courtesy of an unbroken 6th wicket partnership of 175. Smudger played the supporting role well, ending up 79 not out but the real hero was young Cara who ended up with an unbeaten 190. It was a spectacular knock which clearly deserved to be a match winning innings. The Village enjoyed some good fortune over the next couple of weeks. Against North Enfield, the game was one of very few to reach a conclusion amid frequent scattered showers across the county. Only 12 overs were lost all day and the 88 overs which were played proved just enough for the 1st XI to force a victory with 7 balls of the match remaining. In damp conditions, no batsmen from either side scored 50. The hero of the day came from the bowling unit. Majid Asif bowled unchanged from the Pavilion end, finishing with figures of 8-64 in 19.5 overs. A match winning spell in which the final wicket of the North Enfield visitors fell on the 5th ball of what was certain to be his final over, given LBW by an opposition player umpire! The following Saturday was an even closer call. A dramatic victory was secured from the final ball of their match against St Albans III. Asked to bat first on a slow, lifeless wicket, the Village made use of their full 53 overs, scoring 211-8. Dan Potter was a class apart, scoring 90 from the opening spot before getting run out, just short of a deserved maiden century. His knock provided the backbone of the Village innings. A rare bowling outing for Dan also saw him pick up 2 quick wickets with his medium pace swing bowling. 2 for 10 in his short 3 over spell capped a decent day all round. It was the Village spinners who ripped the heart out of the hosts middle order with Graeme Burton (4-47) the pick of the seven bowlers used on the day. The 9th wicket fell with the score at 144 and with 8 overs still remaining in the match, victory looked assured. But the St Albans skipper found an equally stubborn batting ally at No.11.

Page 14: There is always an underlying feeling of pride infiles.pitchero.com/clubs/10403/millhillvillagefixturecard2015_162877.pdfNW7 1AS. CLUB OFFICERS. President: Vince Holohan 23 Melrose

The overs and balls ticked by and the visitors chances of forcing a win seemed to be disappearing fast. However, a probing final over by Majid Asif put the batsmen on edge and on the final ball of the match, a straight delivery hit the pad with no shot offered and the umpire upheld a vociferous LBW appeal. The Village backed up these three memorable victories by winning the next 5 consecutive games as well. A nine wicket win against Waltham X Rossdale IIs came next, with Dave Overton picking up 6-24 as the visitors were bowled out for just 66. Stevenage IIIs were then crushed by 10 wickets in an awesome bowling and particularly fielding performance. The Village bandwagon then rolled over Radlett IVs, with another 9 wicket win. Ben Dawson shone with the ball (5-24) and Dan Potter (55*) was the pick of the batsmen. A more competitive match took place at Tewin at the end of June. For once the Village attack was blunted, as the home side amassed 202-9. In reply the Village got off to a near perfect start. An opening stand of 121 between Greg Vaughan and Dan Potter (53) broke the back of the chase but 4 wickets then fell in the space of the next 10 overs, which sent a few jitters around the visitor’s dressing room. The run rate never got above 5 per over though and Greg looked calmness personified throughout. The Australian born opener ended on 90 not out, compiling an innings of class and substance. Rarely did the ball leave the floor as a succession of straight and cover drives glided elegantly to the boundary, or deep set fielders. Ben Dawson came to the crease with 30 runs still needed for victory and 5 overs left to bat. Barely an over later the match was all over. Using his feet to the off spinner, who had been the pick of the home side’s bowlers to that point, Ben hit 26 runs in a single over to bring a rapid end to the match. A remarkable onslaught, which was even more impressive considering the off spinner’s previous 15 overs had gone for a similar number of runs altogether. Yet another 9 wicket victory came up in the next match against Baldock IIs. This one was a real one man show. Naz Asif picked up 6-26 from 10.4 overs, blowing the last 4 wickets away for just 4 runs, as the opposition collapsed to 170 all out. Naz then proceeded to smash the ball to all parts of the Burtonhole Lane ground, as he reached 116 not out in quick time. The 171 required runs were brought up in less than 24 overs. The run of victories finally came to an end at Northchurch. Taking the unusual decision to bat first on a hot, humid afternoon, the Village scored 250 for 9 and declared after 50 overs. Greg Vaughan (91) with another quality knock was well supported by the rest of the batsmen, who all chipped in with 20s and 30s. In reply Northchurch started brightly but after losing their star man, an overseas South African, they rapidly lost interest in the chase. 9 wickets were ‘winkled’ out but the last pair managed to survive the last 8 balls they were left to face between them. A rare draw and the only one of the season for the Village, which is indicative of the attacking brand of cricket being played. Back to winning ways at Old Albanians IIs the following Saturday. Despite no contributions over 50, the Village amassed 231-9, declaring early again, with Naz Asif (45) top scoring. The game ebbed and flowed nicely during the opposition chase until a crucial run out turned the match in the Village’s favour. Dave Overton (4-58) picked up the last two wickets as the home side were bowled out for 199. July ended with a rare defeat at the hands of Eversholt IIs. A flurry of late order runs from the lower middle order, saw Eversholt reach 225-8 from their 53 overs. In reply the usually dependable Village top order failed to fire for once and stuttered to 60-3. A partnership developed between Greg Vaughan (59) and Phil Smith (40) that put the visitors back into the match. At 132-3 with 14 overs remaining, the game was in the balance. However the two set batsmen both fell within the space of a couple of overs and this triggered a collapse of the middle order. Ever attacking, the Village kept chasing the total but ended up well short on 162 all out. The 1st XI bounced straight back with a mighty impressive victory against Potter Bar III. 96 from Naz Asif, 85 from Dan Potter and a breezy 43 not out from Felix Charles were the main contributions as 274 runs were scored in just 45 overs. This was another innings where Potter the younger had a century in his sights but fell just short. He is too good a player not to get one soon. Potters Bar offered little resistance to the Village opening attack. Andy Potter 5-50 and Dave Overton 4-40 cleaned them up in the space of 19 overs. The returning Andy Brazill took the last wicket to fall with only his 2nd ball. Just 65 overs of cricket played and another early visit to the Bar.

Page 15: There is always an underlying feeling of pride infiles.pitchero.com/clubs/10403/millhillvillagefixturecard2015_162877.pdfNW7 1AS. CLUB OFFICERS. President: Vince Holohan 23 Melrose

Further routine victories followed at Southgate Adelaide (Ben Dawson 5-34, Dave Overton 4-27 & Dan Potter 68*) and then at home against Old Owens II (Andy Potter 3-21, Marcus Cara 3-22 & Dan Potter 42). Promotion was already secured when the Village visited Great Gaddesden on the third last weekend of the SHCL season. Dave Overton’s 5-39 helped dismiss the hosts for 176. It took just 28 overs to overhaul this total with Marcus Cara (45) top scoring. The title was confirmed later that evening when other results were reported and closest rivals, Holtwhite Trinibis had failed to secure a victory. The final two matches were understandably anticlimactic. County Hall turned up with an incomplete team and suffered the consequences. After the visitors were bowled out for 162, the Village knocked off the required runs in 24 overs. Majid Asif, promoted up the order, cashed in with 82 not out. A lacklustre performance against Ware in the final match, saw the season end with a loss. Batting first, only Phil Smith (46) and Andy Potter (34*) showed any real resistance as the Village hosts were bowled out for 164. Despite this, the Village, with their winning mentality, felt it was probably enough. When Ware were reduced to 50-5 this confidence looked entirely justified. Good bowling from Andy Potter (4-49) had the visitors in trouble. A couple of good catches from the Village, including a stunner at short leg from Phil Smith, were interspersed with some dropped chances. In the end the Village were made to pay for their profligacy with the bat and in the field. The Ware lower order dug in and ground out some partnerships to frustrate the home side. In the end Ware deservedly got over the line, winning by 1 wicket to secure the points they needed to avoid relegation. It was a shame that such a successful season finished with a defeat. The match will also be remembered as the last league game 'the Nut' will ever play for the club. 20+ years of excellent service on and off the field drew to a close, as he and his family moved to Australia. We wish him all the very best. It was another excellent, successful and hugely enjoyable season for the Village 1st XI. 5 batsmen scored more than 300 league runs. Dan Potter with the highest aggregate (582) but Greg Vaughan with the better average (76.8). Marcus Cara’s back to back centuries are also worth another mention, In the bowling department, skipper David Overton led the way again with 46 wickets, followed by Ben Dawson with 20 and Majid Asif with 19, at an economy of under 3 runs per over. Steve Pullen had a superbly reliable season with the gloves. Marcus Cara and Phil ‘Smudger’ Smith shared the fielding honours with most catches, although there is no doubt that it was Ben Dawson that really set the highest standards in the field. Ben and Greg, the two Aussie recruits, will be sorely missed this year, should they fail to return. Dawso’s excellent all-round contribution with bat, ball and in the field was capped off with the award for Player of the Season. He also managed to pick up the award for most ducks (3) in the season. Hinal Gajjar, can breathe a big sigh of relief, having been in the lead prior to his mid-season departure for Abu Dhabi. There are some significant changes coming to the Herts leagues in 2015. The move to 10 team divisions and a home and away match against each opposition, will see a reversion back to the old Middlesex Championship style format. Perhaps the bigger change is the move to true limited over cricket on Saturdays, with 50% of the games being played on a Win / Lose basis, rather than the traditional 53/47 split game which includes the draw. Each opposition will be played in one new format game and one old format match. No doubt the Village will embrace the changes and continue to move forward successfully in what are exciting times for the club.

PHIL SMITH

MHV 2nd ELEVEN 2014 SEASON REPORT

The 2014 season was a bit of an anti-climax compared with the promotions of the two previous years, although finishing 6th in a division of 19 teams hardly counts as a poor season. This was a fair reflection on the strength of our team and our performances throughout the season, particularly given the loss of several key players from last season’s side. We finished with 8 wins, 3 draws, 5 losses and 2 games rained off and didn’t put together a run of more than 3 wins, though a few of the losses were games we really should have won…. Predictably, after last season’s fun and games, the first game was away against Southgate Compton IIs. Both teams provided an umpire and were on best behaviour. We were put in to bat on a typically damp May wicket and crawled to 73 for 4 before a stunning partnership of 169 off 25 overs from Naz Asif (131*) and Jonny Gahan (64) took us to 252 for 6 from 45 overs. Southgate were never interested in chasing this total and set out to frustrate us. Some generous bowling allowed the opposition to put some runs on but the breakthrough was made in the 41st over and the innings collapsed to 166 all out, to give us a good start to the season. Our second opponents were promotion rivals Cockfosters IVs, who were put in on another horrible day and in desperate trouble at 30 for 2 from 23 overs before being saved by the rain (probably!). Next up were the veterans of Chorleywood 3rd team at the Burtonhole Lane Oval. Losing the toss on a wet pitch is never a great idea and the medium pace of Chorleywood’s only two bowlers was more than enough to cause all sorts of problems. Raheel Zaman (47) gave us some sort of defendable total but we were all out for 142 from only 29 overs, leaving Chorleywood 71 overs to chase at precisely 2 an over. Chorleywood set out in no hurry, but with 7 bowlers to choose from wickets fell regularly and at 116 for 8 a win looked on the cards, before the opposition captain saw them home in the 58th over. With game 4 rained off, we faced Northwood IIIs on the sloping wicket at their lovely main ground. Northwood were inserted and Sanket took 4 for 32 and the innings ended on 133, a total swiftly knocked off for 3 wickets by Lee Crocker (67*) and Pete Jaffe (38*). June brought a succession of tough fixtures, the first against another of our old rivals Flitwick IIIs, fortunately up at their Minor County main ground on another wet day. With our bowling options limited due to a Maserati-related injury (?) to opener Darshan Raval, their rotund skipper tucked into the weakened attack before holing out in the deep to Lee Crocker for 69. As often happens, wickets then tumbled and we were very happy to restrict them to 175 from their 43 overs. With a strong batting line-up we felt confident of chasing this total, but 2 quick wickets from their lively opening bowler put us on the back foot. Crocker (35) and Zaf Basit (26) counter-attacked before both fell, followed by the rest of the middle order to leave the innings in tatters on 93-8 with 17 overs left. Dave Flavell (22), Lawrence Bird (4*) and Darshan (0*) then dug in, ending on 124-9 for a proper battling draw and some frustrated opposition. June finally brought some decent weather and we played league leaders (and eventual winners) Datchworth IIs on their lovely village green in glorious sunshine. We welcomed debutant Ali Javed to the side and he and Lee Cara enjoyed the first hard pitch of the season, giving the slips some tough chances and a few sore fingers. Things were looking good at 143-7 but a couple of solid partnerships and some late slogging rescued the Datchworth innings and they finished on 244-9 from their 53 overs. This total was achievable on a hard pitch where every shot that pierced the ring went for 4. As usual two quick wickets were followed by a decent partnership from Naz (44) and Pete Jaffe (39) which took us to 81-3 before the traditional middle order slump left us on 115-6. Sanket Shah and Dave Flavell then put some respectability on the score before the innings was wrapped up on 197. Next opponents Hitchin IIIs were dispatched without much drama and the game against West Herts IIIs brought the performance of the season from Sanket Shah (114* and 5 for 18) to give us a 108 run victory. Shenley Village IIIs brought us back down to earth with some sensible batting taking them to 171-9 with Andy Brazill welcomed back to the Village taking 5 for 42. Once again we were bowled out by two bowlers, bowling 27 overs between them and taking 9 wickets, with Ajay Bhatia top scoring with a dashing 25* batting at 11 to take us from 61-9 to 102 all out. Determined to bounce back, we bowled Hertingfordbury IIs out for 114, with Sanket (5 for 41) and Graeme ‘Wingnut’ Burton (4 for 24), assisted by Pete Jaffe taking 4 catches. Yet again, two dobby bowlers skittled us out for 88. Two defeats were followed by a draw against Flamstead IIs who profited from dropped catches to post 229 before a thunderstorm forced a declaration. The Village reply

Page 20: There is always an underlying feeling of pride infiles.pitchero.com/clubs/10403/millhillvillagefixturecard2015_162877.pdfNW7 1AS. CLUB OFFICERS. President: Vince Holohan 23 Melrose

featured Zaf Basit carrying his bat for 66 not out whilst wickets tumbled at the other end as we battled to 199 for 9. Hatfield Crusaders IVs were beaten thanks to our best batting performance of the year, chasing 140 for the loss of just two wickets. Hoddesdon IIIs conceded and Botany Bay IIIs were comfortably beaten by 9 wickets (Zaf 50*) to put us in 5th place with two games to go against fellow promotion rivals HoltwhiteTrinibis IIIs (4th) and Ickleford IIIs (7th). Holtwhites put us into bat and strong batting from Crocker (63) and Naz (99) allowed a declaration on 300 from 47 overs. Holtwhites never chased and the game finished in darkness as a draw, with Shenley Village leapfrogging both teams into 4th spot. The final game of the season saw us losing to Ickleford in the 5th/6th place play off. Overall it was a mixed season, interrupted by rain at the start and we never put together a string of more than 3 wins, probably due to the side being less settled than in previous seasons. Our bowling attack was strengthened by the pace and bounce of Ali Javed, with Ajay Bhatia, Darshan Raval and Naz Asif also bowling well with the spin of Wingnut, Pryank Patel and Sanket Shah producing results when conditions suited. The damp summer made batting difficult at times, but Lee Crocker, Naz Asif, Zaf Basit, Sanket Shah and Jonny Gahan all played significant innings during the season. A steadier batting line-up could easily have gained us promotion. We hope to be very competitive next season in Division 10A, playing every team home and away in a mixed format of 50 over ‘one day’ games and the 53/47 overs timed games of the previous few seasons. Special mentions to: Naz Asif – 304 runs, 18 wickets; Lee Crocker – 293 runs Sanket Shah – 209 runs, 20 wickets. Most ducks were shared between Sanket, George Lee and Dave Knight (2 each), with honourable mentions to Hinal Gajjar, Chalky Cara and Hassan Shafique who all managed a duck on their only appearances for the 2’s!

MHV 3rd ELEVEN 2014 SEASON REPORT The 3rd XI’s final record of played 17, Won 5, Drew 3 and Lost 5 (4 no results) was a fair reflection of how the team performed. As ever, our performances were hugely determined by availability. The fact that 34 players were used and only 3 people played 10 or more games indicates how difficult it was to get any consistency. The season started with a difficult fixture away to Redbourn’s Third Eleven. The bowling attack was led by stand-in captain Dan Penny, who won the toss and decided to bowl, restricting the hosts to 189 for 7. Despite a solid start (Piers Jenkins 42) the Village lost wickets regularly and were reduced to 150 for 9 before it was left to Andrew Godfrey to survive the last over & ensure a draw. This was followed by a frustrating defeat against a strong Harpenden side. Having won the toss, Harpenden were dismissed for 178. This target should have been achievable but after a steady start (James Thompson 42), the middle order collapsed and with wickets falling regularly the Village fell 29 runs short. After rain ruined the Old Elizabethans game, a seemingly weak Village side took on Langleybury. Thanks to fine bowling and keen fielding, the Village skittled out the opponents for 59 (Dan Penny 5 – 16 and Andrew Godfrey 2 for 16) before Lawrence Bird 19* and Piers 41*, knocked off the runs, to record a 10 wicket victory. This was followed by a disappointing batting performance when having lost a crucial toss the Village were bowled out for 66, allowing Met Police Bushey to ease to victory by 6 wickets. Next up for the Village were league leaders Rickmansworth. Playing on the front pitch on a hot, sunny day, the visitors got off to a quick fire start. They were briefly pegged back by George Downes, 3 for 29 and Darshan Ravel, 3 for 44, before a late onslaught took them to 245 for 7 off 45 overs. The prospect of chasing down this target reduced further with the loss of both openers cheaply and it was left to Matt Hawkes 80 and Joe Sheridan 50 to rebuild the inning. With the required rate continuing to increase, the Village settled for a draw finishing up on 210 for 6. Redbourn’s Fourth Eleven were comfortably beaten thanks to an excellent all round performance from Darshan Raval. Bowling first, Penny (4 for 30) and Raval (3 for 20) ensured that Redbourn were restricted to 108 all out. The runs were chased down in less than 20 overs with Raval 46 not out. With a sense of déjà vu, the Thirds entertained (the now) table toppers Watford Town on the front pitch. On another hot day, captain Downes won the toss and elected to bat. Despite Bird, Sheridan, Ravel and Pete Jaffe all making starts the Village were 140 for 8 before Downes 22* hit out to reach 168 for 9 off of 47 overs. On a good surface it was felt that this was 20 or 30 light. This proved to be the case with Town winning by 6 wickets with 15 balls to spare – the pick of the bowlers was George Leggett 2 for 17. On the plus side, the team performed well against the season’s outstanding side. A major positive from the game being Leggett’s bowling. The trip to Chipperfield Clarendon saw the Village meet up with former First XI Opening Batsman Dave Bunning. On a scorching hot day a relieved Downes won the toss and chose to bat. A solid start thanks to Matin Khan (29 before retiring ill), Lawrence (20), JT (38) and Dan (18) should have resulted in a score of around 200 but wickets fell regularly to leave the Village 181 all out off 46.4 overs. One of the top order should have made 50+ but the late order also failed. Leggett junior (father Graham was making his Village league debut) once again bowled impressively with the new ball, striking twice but he could not remove the veteran Bunning. Poor (and very short) bowling from the more experienced seamers saw Chipperfield reach 120 for 2 and drinks. The Downes spinners picked up a wicket each but Bunning was still there, eventually being stumped for 88 with a dozen runs needed. Despite a couple of close calls, the hosts limped to victory – another 30 runs could have been the difference. Well batted Dave, but I’m sure you used to get to 50 and then get out! Back on home soil the Village asked Old Albanians to bat first. The visitors took advantage of some loose bowling and a total of 280 plus loomed before Leggett (2 for 24) and R Downes (3 for 20) applied the brakes. However Albanians still reached 228 off 45 overs. In reply, both openers fell cheaply to be followed by numbers 4 and 5. George Downes joined JT at 20 for 4. Batting carefully they took the total towards 100 before Downes was bowled trying to increase the rate. Dave Knight gave JT more

Page 26: There is always an underlying feeling of pride infiles.pitchero.com/clubs/10403/millhillvillagefixturecard2015_162877.pdfNW7 1AS. CLUB OFFICERS. President: Vince Holohan 23 Melrose

support before JT eventually fell for 71 with 8 overs to go and 6 down. The Village clung onto a draw with Chalky 8th man out going for the maximum batting point. With 4 games to go (all against teams pushing for promotion) the Village were not yet safe. However an excellent performance on Northwood Town’s artificial surface alleviated any pressure. Winning the toss Downes had no hesitation in batting. Piers and JT started watchfully, 14 from 10 overs, before gradually improving the run rate. JT was eventually out for 51 and he was quickly followed in the same over by Hawkes. Dan and Piers continued to tick the run rate over and when Piers was out for 71 with 6 overs to go the maximum batting points (170 runs) could be achieved. However Graham Leggett had other ideas and a quick-fire 30 took the Village to 200 off of 47 overs. Bowling with increased confidence George Leggett struck in the 1st over thanks to an outstanding slip catch from Dan. Leggett then bowled the other opener before having to come off after 5 overs. George Downes then struck with his 1st ball before Godfrey dismissed the number 5 with his penultimate delivery. A further wicket for Downes and one for young James Samarasinghe on debut, left the hosts at 90 for 6. However Town’s number 4 was looking dangerous before the return of Leggett (3 for 42) saw him depart. The first 7 wickets had fallen to Colts. Despite some resistance from the tail, Hawkes wrapped up victory with 2 wickets and a run out. This was undoubtedly our best performance of the season. It should also be noted that despite their defeat, Northwood proved to be excellent hosts (and tea wasn’t too bad either). Sadly this was followed up by a poor performance at Bushey where the Village were soundly beaten (George Downes 4 for 37 & Piers 32 were the best of the bowling and batting ). George may have had a Michelle had Piers not been listening to Swansea beat Man Utd 2:1 when the ball went in the air towards him! A walk over against St Albans meant the Village went into the last game against Radlett in mid-table. Batting first the Village collapsed to 50 for 7 before Ashan Khan (43) and George Downes doubled the score. A couple of slogs from Richard Downes took the final score to 147. Godfrey struck in his 1st over but Radlett soon reached 50 for 1. Ashan’s wicket at 70 for 2 began a ‘Village like’ collapse as Richard Downes (2 for 10), Dave Knight (2 for 9), Afshin Yazidi (3 for 1!!) and 2 comedy run outs saw Radlett all out for Nelson – 111. As stated at the start of the report, consistency of availability was the main issue. At times the Village played decent cricket whilst at others it was distinctly average. It was good to see a number of youngsters playing and making significant contributions to the team. Thanks to Dan, Chalky and Loz for captaining in the 1st half of the season and congratulations to JT as the leading run scorer, George Downes for most wickets and George Leggett for player of the season. Finally, good luck in 2015 to new Captain James Thompson.

MILL HILL VILLAGE COLTS REPORT FOR 2014

The Village Colts section continues to go from strength to strength. The numbers attending the Winter Nets sessions and the Outdoor training are growing and the quality of the cricket on display continues to improve and impress. Several of the older Colts are breaking through into Adult cricket and are already making valuable contributions. This is one of the main aims of the Colts section and it is really pleasing to see. The Under 11s backed up their successes of previous seasons by competing strongly in Division 2 of the Middlesex East Area leagues. Winning the majority of the games, the youngsters just lost a couple of close encounters to miss out on topping the table. A run to the area Cup Semi Final also meant it was a really satisfactory season of development for the boys. Each and every one of the lads made valuable contributions across the season. Our bowling attack had excellent depth and variety and the top of the batting order was very consistent. Fielding is often given underrated importance, especially at youth level but it can genuinely make the difference between winning and losing games. It was really pleasing to see our ground fielding and catching make good strides and for our efforts in this department to have a real impact on several games. At Under 13 level the wins were a little harder to come by but a few victories and a mid-table finish were hard earned and well secured. There were numerous creditable individual performances in many of the games. Putting a few of these individually talented cameos together, to create a strong team performance will be the aim for the 2015 season. A lot of the boys in the U13s, will remain in this age group for the coming season and they will be stronger for the experiences gained. The older boys will be moving up to play in a new age group. An Under 14s league side has been added to the Under 11s and Under 13s leagues for 2015. As the ‘senior’ side in the Colts section, we will be looking to them to provide an even higher level of ‘professionalism’ in their performances. Stronger and longer focus on the game while fielding, an understanding and appreciation of their positions, keeping a high tempo in the game, particularly between overs and bowlers setting their own fields, are some of the aspects that we will be working on. Mill Hill Village Colts section places a great deal of importance on the ‘spirit of cricket’ and it was very pleasing to see this being upheld to a high standard once again. Without exception, the boys and girls are a credit to their parents and confer great credit on the club with their exemplary behaviour both on and off the field. The aims of our Colts section are to give our junior members a love for cricket, to help them enjoy a great sport in a fun and welcoming environment and to produce cricketers who are able to represent Mill Hill Village CC and any future clubs with distinction. It was exciting to see several of the older Colts players making their way into Adult cricket last year. The adult sides at the club, especially the 1st XI, are filled with players who have come through the Colts section and this is a legacy that we want to nurture and see endure. We have a Development XI Sunday side, which has been created specifically to provide opportunities for our Colts to make the progression into Adult cricket. There are 6 or 7 Development XI fixtures scheduled throughout the summer and we will look to blend a team of older Colts alongside some experienced ‘old hands’, to ensure the games are well managed. If you are a Colts member aged 14 or over and would like some experience of Adult cricket, please speak to your coach. Congratulations to the 2015 Colts Awards winners: - Under 11 Player of the Year: Vayu Singhal Under 13 Player of the Year: Ayush Shah Presidents Cup Winner: Andrew Godfrey Congratulations are due to all players, too many to mention, who scored runs, took wickets and held catches.

2014 saw the introduction of a Satellite Club set up at Mill Hill County High School. Mill Hill Village CC provided after school coaching at no cost to the pupils and will continue to do so in 2015. It is hoped that this link can be fostered for future years and provide mutual benefits to the club, the school and most importantly the participants. Our sincere thanks go to all those people who provide such excellent support to the Colts section. The coaching assistance from Parents and Club members was superb last year and this remains critical to the success of the section. Lee Downes will be stepping down as Colts membership secretary this year after many seasons of sterling service. Her help and support has been invaluable and she will be missed. Others who have help out behind the bar, manning the BBQ, or providing match day support are also greatly appreciated. If you feel able to help in any way, please come and have a chat with us. We hope the boys and girls are looking forward to another fun and exciting season of cricket.

Phil Smith & Richard Downes Outdoor colts training sessions runs from 6.30pm to 8.30pm (light permitting) on Friday evenings, commencing on April

25th and concluding on July 18th.

If it is wet the training is likely to be cancelled so please check with the coaches as early as possible. Arrangements should be made for your child to travel to and from training sessions and matches. We would appreciate it if children can arrive promptly and are collected promptly at the end of the session, if they are not making their own way home. If you are going to be late picking up your child, please contact Richard Downes on 07736052012 or Philip Smith on 07976 297721 and let them know. Please complete and hand back the Junior Membership form and read this plus your introductory letter carefully, as they spell out our commitment to the development of young cricketers and your role and responsibilities in ensuring this can happen successfully.

CAN YOU HELP?

Any parent or players who can assist with coaching our many Colts cricketers on a Friday evening, or who would be happy to help transport the teams to away matches, please contact the appropriate team coach. It would be very much appreciated. There are recognised coaching courses available to suit all levels from helpers through to senior coaches – if you are interested in attending a course please contact Ted or Richard for details.

NOTICE TO PLAYERS

Selection of teams takes place early in the week during the cricket season. It is up to all players to make their availability known to the Team Captains. If you have not heard about your game but wish to play, ring a Captain and ask, don’t wait for the Club to call you. Selected players wishing to drop out of a side, must do so before 9.00pm on Thursday and should contact their Captain as early as possible.

Players should arrive at the ground at least 30 minutes before the scheduled start of play.

It is each player’s responsibility to ascertain whether or not a game is cancelled due to bad weather. Please phone the Team Captain. You must never assume that a match is called off Disciplinary action, in accordance with the Cricket Committee’s Terms of Reference, may be taken in such circumstances.

All players please note that the usual meeting place for away matches will be Mill Hill Broadway Station unless otherwise advised. Please be at the meet on time for all away matches.

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

Welcome to Mill Hill Village Sports Club Ltd - a Clubmark and Standard Charter Club. Once again my thanks go out to all the club officers and volunteers, who work hard and give their time free of charge to provide sporting facilities for the local community. Especially to those who took time off work to help with last year’s Charity fundraising events. This year, we will again be hosting the Mitchells and Butlers group to raise money for worthwhile causes. Mitchells and Butlers main charity will be the Calvert Trust, and ours will be Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice. So please give your support, yet again to help support both the Club and these wonderful charities. ‘Never reach out your hand unless you’re willing to extend an arm’ - Pope Paul VI

Ted Kelly

The Village in Winter

Our Footballers, both Adult and Junior have suffered a long wet winter with many cancelled games. Despite this, the 1st XI had a couple of good cup runs and are challenging for a back to back promotion. The 2nd XI have made excellent progress this year and they too have had a decent cup run and are in the shake up for promotion at the end of the season. Our youth football is now completing its 7th year and is looking good for the future under the astute guidance of Julian Peel. Home games are played on Sunday mornings at the club, with training taking place on Saturday mornings. If you wish to play, coach, referee or assist in any way, please get in touch with any member of the cricket committee, who will point you in the right direction.
