There are 2 main types of graphite drawing pencils: H and BH = “hard” B = “black”

H pencils: The higher the number, the harder the graphite. This means the mark the pencil makes will be LIGHTER. Because the graphite is harder, less of it will rub off on the page as you draw.

B pencils: The higher the number, the blacker the graphite. This means that the mark on the paper will be DARKER.

A pencil marked HB pretty much lies in the middle of this spectrum.

Like the graphite pencils, there are a few different types of charcoal pencils to choose from: Light, medium, and dark, referring to how dark or light of a mark the pencil makes.

Dropping, throwing, or carelessly handling any of these tools may cause the material inside of them to break. Once that happens, they are almost impossible to use. ***If you mishandle the materials then you will loose the privilege of using them!***

This is your standard plastic eraser. It should only be used for graphite.Great for erasing large areas.

This is a kneaded eraser. It can be shaped and molded, and is great for erasing small amounts in tiny areas. It may be used for graphite and charcoal.

***These erasers should NOT be used for colored pencil.***

This is called a “tortillon” or “blending stump”. It is used to blend graphite and charcoal for a smoother, less sketchy appearance. This tools is for graphite and charcoal.

***It should NOT be used for colored pencil.***

***The paper DOES NOT peel back to reveal a cleaner surface. This will RUIN the blending stump! Once there is charcoal or graphite on the tortillon, you cannot remove it.***
