Speech pathologySpeech pathologists diagnose and treat communication disorders. This might

include difficulties with speaking, listening and understanding language, reading, writing, and the development of social skills. People who experience difficulties swallowing food and drinking safely can also be assisted by a speech pathologist.

The team works with customers of all ages who have developmental delays, learning disabilities, autism, stroke, brain injury, intellectual disability and neurological disorders.

Occupational therapyOccupational therapists (OTs) support people living with disability to increase

their independence in all aspects of life, such as taking care of oneself, working, and participating in hobbies and social activities. This might include help with dressing, personal care, cooking meals or shopping. It may also include prescribing equipment or technology that assists with independence.

Rocky Bay’s OTs can also help with assessing a customer’s home environment to determine if modifications or assistive equipment could help increase independence and safety.

PhysiotherapyOur physiotherapists are specialists in movement and mobility. They

support people living with disability to achieve their optimum functional mobility through exercise, postural support and, in some cases, respiratory care.

Physiotherapists can help individuals to recover from physical injuries and serious health conditions, such as an acquired brain injury, in addition to supporting individuals who have lifelong conditions, such as cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy. Rocky Bay are proud to offer contemporary neurological rehabilitation to our customers.

Our physiotherapists tailor programs to meet the individual needs of each customer, as well as assisting with the prescription of mobility equipment, orthotics and equipment for supporting body posture. They can also implement programs in the home or community, while working closely with other health specialists to make sure customers receive a holistic service.

Psychosocial servicesRocky Bay has a team of psychologists, occupational therapists and social

workers who have a wealth of experience working with children and adults living with disability, offering support to customers and their families during challenging times. They also work with customers who are adjusting to a new diagnosis, such as a spinal cord injury, helping to navigate the changes that have occurred in their lives as a result of the injury.

Services may be delivered through one-to-one individual sessions or group sessions, depending on what will provide the best outcome for the customer. Support and education can be provided to family members and support workers to assist with strategies for managing behaviours of concern.

Social workers are available to support customers with decision-making, advocacy, financial or legal matters, and provide referrals for community services. They may also offer specialist support to customers with an acquired disability to help adjust to their changed circumstances. Please note: Not all mental health conditions can be supported by Rocky Bay’s psychologists, who have a specific focus on mental health as it relates to a person’s disability. Some mental health conditions are better managed by community mental health services and may require input from a community psychiatrist.
