Therapeutic Recreation Services of the Roanoke Valley provides specialized and adaptive recreation and leisure services that empower people with disabilities to gain the knowledge and skills needed for the development of a leisure lifestyle that meets their interests and needs. The programs listed in this guide are designed to meet the needs and interests of individuals with developmental/cognitive disabilities, head injury related disabilities, or who have psychiatric disabilities.
TRS Support StaffSupport Staff assist as needed in all aspects of your participation in TRS programs. Duties may include: assisting with transportation, supervision, limited personal care, prompting, and support as participants work towards individual program goals.
High Demand Classes & Wait ListsSometimes programs may fill before the registration session concludes. TRS considers these “High Demand” classes. “High Demand” classes are marked with a next to the title. If a class fills, the participant will automatically be placed on a wait list. Participants will be contacted if placed on the wait list and a space becomes available.
TransportationTransportation fee is $3.00 for each round trip, for those who need to be picked up for programs. Programs that have the word LIMITED after the transportation fee, only offer transportation from home for those who live independently, or in group homes without transportation, all other participants can meet at a pick-up point or at the program. Transportation is only provided at pick-up points for trips outside the Roanoke Valley. TRS Transportation pick-up points are: Brambleton Center, Goodwill Salem-Lakeside Plaza, Goodwill Vinton, and 460 Antique Mall.
InclusionPeople with disabilities are encouraged to participate in recreation programs that meet their interest and function level. Please check out Roanoke County, City of Roanoke, and City of Salem general recreation programs. Contact TRS for more information about Inclusion Services. Request for Inclusion Service must be made at least two weeks prior to the start of the program. Transportation is not provided for general recreation programs.

In June of this year, Roanoke County will celebrate 40 years of providing recreation services for people with disabilities. On June 8, 1976, The Ro-
anoke County Board of Supervisors voted to offer a recreation summer program for youth with disabilities; ACE Camp was born! Since then, Therapeutic Recreation Services of the Valley has offered goal oriented programs to youth with multiple developmental disabilities, as well as adults with cognitive disabilities, mental health diagnoses, head injury related disabilities, and visual impairments.
TRS currently offers over 120 program per year and is serving over 2,000 registrations to over 400 unique participants each year, and has expand-ed service to the surrounding area including Roanoke City, City of Salem, and adjacent counties. TRS offers programming that reflects the quality and breadth of general recreation programs; pottery, painting, hiking, over-night trips, cooking, fitness, swimming, and so many more. Con-gratulations Roanoke County!

For the last three months, TRS staff has had the pleasure of work-ing with three college-based interns. Sara Jarrett from Long-
wood University, and Victoria Bennett and Hannah Martin from Radford University have been “learning the ropes” of therapeutic recreation programming. During their short tenure, the interns have become an integral part of Therapeutic Recreation Services, and their presence and enthusiasm will be sorely missed. Join us in wishing them all success and accomplishment with their future endeavors!
