It’s About Our PatientsThe Transformative Power of Philanthropy

EVERY PATIENT VISIT IS IMPACTED AND IMPROVED BY THE GENEROSITY OF OUR DONORS

It Is our great pleasureto welcome you to the 2010-2011 North York General Hospital Foundation Annual Report. In the pages that follow, you will find stories of how philanthropy touches every patient experience at NYGH. We are honoured to work with our donors. Like them, we are inspired by our caregivers and by our patients who, every day, show the courage and compassion that makes North York General exceptional. We would like to share just one of the special stories that inspire us. Jennifer Bronsema is a member of our Foundation’s Board of Governors and a long-standing

supporter. She has worked for many years to help ensure that NYGH can provide the very best care for patients, but she never imagined that she would one day herself need to benefit from that care. This past January, Jennifer was shocked to be diagnosed with large B cell Lymphoma. In her own words: “Following my diagnosis, I was invited to a Chemotherapy Information session. My husband and I were advised about what could be expected throughout treatment. We were taught about chemotherapy and how it works, what common side effects I might experience, how to manage them and how to look after myself during treatment. We were also given a wealth of information on possible financial assistance, support groups, nutrition, even where to go for a wig. We found this information to be extremely useful. A week later, I went for my first treatment. “From the day I arrived, I was treated with kindness and respect,” she continues. “I was always greeted with a smiling face. Staff members are friendly, helpful and always available to answer any questions or assist with any issues. They knew my name, they knew my situation and they made me feel as comfortable as possible under the circumstances.”

The staff celebrated her victories. “At my last chemo treatment, all the nurses came to my station and they toasted the completion of my treatment with juice.” NYGH offers one of the GTA’s largest cancer care programs. “Great facilities like NYGH don’t just happen,” says Jennifer. “It takes many professionals, a great deal of expertise, expensive equipment and – at the end of the day – a lot of money.” Donor support touches and improves the experience of every patient like Jennifer. In Cancer Care alone, donors fund special training for caregivers, so that they always have the most up-to-date knowledge. Donors purchase state-of-the-art equipment for optimal diagnosis and treatment of different cancers. Donors help us build warm, efficient facilities for the patient experience, and provide the information resources that help patients face their difficult journey with more confidence. Jennifer’s experience at NYGH is not unusual. It is part of a culture that exists across the Hospital. Our donors are also inspired by the spirit of compassion shown by our caregivers and the spirit of courage shown by our patients. That is why we are honoured to share their stories with you.

every patIeNt vIsIt to NortH York General Hospital is improved by donor support, whether it is through the equipment that we are able to purchase, the facilities we can build, or our capacity to engage in research and education to develop and spread the knowledge needed for superior care. We are setting a course for our Hospital’s future achievements with the confidence that your generosity will continue to enable excellent care, education and innovation at NYGH. In order to provide the best care possible, our Hospital must have state-of-the-art equipment like new CT scanners that provide the highest-quality images while delivering as little radiation as possible. We are also fundraising to enable the Hospital to purchase an entire new fleet of

medication pumps and monitors to provide uniform, computer-monitored medication distribution, thereby improving patient care. These are only two of a substantial number of equipment needs that we hope to fund through philanthropic support. Donations will also drive our academic strategy. NYGH provides vital medical support to hundreds of thousands of patients each year from one of the most diverse populations in the world. While serving this population, we are also learning about the health of individuals and communities, and about what treatments are most effective. We have a unique opportunity and responsibility to capture this knowledge and share it broadly so that it benefits patients around the world. Philanthropic support will help us recruit the expertise we need to emerge as a leader in driving new health innovations. There is a broad range of opportunities for donors to contribute to the excellence of NYGH, and an equally broad variety of ways for us to recognize our generous donors within the Hospital. It is your support that enables us to provide the extraordinary care that defines NYGH.

NortH york geNeral HospItal is uniquely positioned to drive innovations in health research, technology and education. We benefit from a strong relationship with the University of Toronto; in 2007, we became the first community teaching hospital to sign an affiliation agreement with the University. NYGH is home to one of the largest complements of family physicians of any hospital in Canada (450+ physicians) as well as large patient populations in such vital areas as obstetrics, palliative care, emergency services, after hours care, and surgery. In addition, we serve one of the most diverse communities in the world, including a broad range of ethnicities, age groups, and socio-economic groups.

Our Academic Mission

gordon F. Cheesbrough

The combination of our clinical strengths, academic reputation, and population diversity provides us with the opportunity to ask vital questions and develop new insights into the health of individuals and populations that will be relevant to clinicians and researchers around the world. Our commitment to expand our academic strategy means that our Hospital can emerge as a leader in such areas as healthcare delivery models, informatics (using eCare systems in healthcare), the prevention and management of chronic disease, providing service to diverse populations, interprofessional teams, and innovative educational models. In 2010-11, our Hospital took a major step forward in our academic mission with the establishment of the Gordon F. Cheesbrough Research Chair in Family and Community Medicine, which honours our past Board Chair who died in June of last year after a sudden onset of aggressive lymphoma. The establishment of the Chair will help the Hospital recruit an outstanding senior academic. We look forward to sharing with you additional details on the development of our academic strategy as it evolves in 2011-12, and how our donors are helping to support the academic work that will benefit all our caregivers and patients.

NYGhWHeN patIeNts Come to NortH York General Hospital, they may not always be aware of how donor support is helping our Hospital provide them with extraordinary care and a positive experience. In our BMO Financial Group Breast Diagnostics Centre, the support of our generous donors, led by Charlotte and Lewis Steinberg, enabled us to purchase two 3D digital mammography machines for the Karen, Heather & Lynn Steinberg Breast Services program, located at NYGH’s general site and at our Branson site. In our newly renovated Medical Imaging facilities, named for our Volunteer Services team, a wide range of donors led by Gulshan and

Pyarali Nanji helped us to improve the experience of our patients. Patients also benefit from the outstanding service provided by caregivers trained in our Family Practice Teaching Unit, which has been redeveloped thanks to funding provided by our donors, including Rudolph and Rita Koehler as the lead donors. The Temerty Family Foundation recently made a $2 million pledge to the Hospital on behalf of Louise and James Temerty. The gift is the largest unrestricted donation in North York General’s history, which will provide invaluable support to our priority needs. Brad and Kathy Badeau were inspired to become donors after

their family had several positive experiences as patients at NYGH, and the Freeman family funded a unique centre for palliative care to help patients at their most vulnerable time. These are just a few of the ways in which our generous supporters have helped transform North York General over the past two years and have greatly enhanced our ability to provide the very highest standard of care. In the pages that follow, we are pleased to share with you some of our stories of the vision and generosity of our donors. These stories inspire us every day and we hope they will inspire you as well.

The Nanjis

n December 2, 2010, North York General Hospital celebrated the opening of the Gulshan and Pyarali G. Nanji Ultrasound, CT and Radiography Centre, part of the Volunteer Services Centre for Medical Imaging. The state-of-the-art facility, which was completed

with the generous support of the Nanjis and other donors, will greatly enhance the experience of all patients requiring medical imaging at NYGH. The opening of the Centre is the culmination of a journey that began in 1972, when Ugandan President Idi Amin ordered all Asians to leave the country and Mr. and Mrs. Nanji were

stripped of their citizenship. Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau made the decision to airlift members of the community, including the Nanji family, to Canada, where they could start a new life. They have thrived here, and have expressed their gratitude with many generous acts of philanthropy, including multiple benefactions at North York General. A few days before the Centre opened, the Toronto Star published a feature article on the Nanjis’ support of NYGH, and quoted Mr. Nanji explaining why he enjoys supporting hospitals in particular: “There’s no religion, no discrimination. There is no rich or poor. If I am sick, I have to stay in queue and wait until it’s my turn.” On December 9, 2010, Mr. and Mrs. Nanji had a chance to thank the Trudeau family when they met with Justin Trudeau, Pierre Trudeau’s son and MP for the riding of Papineau, at a memorable lunch in the Hospital. The Nanjis expressed their profound gratitude during the lunch, followed by a tour of the recently-opened Centre. During the tour, Mr. Nanji reinforced his message of philanthropy: “It is important to contribute to the country that welcomed you.”

The Temertys

ouise Temerty knows, first-hand, the quality of service that is provided by dedicated doctors and nurses at North York General. She also understands the importance of giving back. “My daughter Leah was born at North York General,” says Mrs. Temerty, “and I had an operation there on another occasion. I never forgot how wonderful those experiences were. The Hospital has a very warm environment. Every patient is important.” In the years since she was a patient, Mrs. Temerty has honoured her experience at NYGH as a volunteer and donor. When the south tower of the Hospital was being built during the Stand By Me Campaign, she served for 10 years on the volunteer Donor Relations Committee, providing valuable guidance on our donor recognition systems. The Temerty Family Foundation also recently made a

generous $2 million pledge in support of the Hospital’s priority needs to honour Mrs. Temerty’s many positive experiences here. The gift is the largest unrestricted donation in North York General’s history, which will provide invaluable support to our emerging priorities within an ever-changing landscape. She explains that the gift to North York General is one of several significant donations by the Temerty Family Foundation to different hospitals around the GTA. These gifts reflect the family’s commitment to the health of citizens in our community and beyond. Although the philanthropic commitments of Mrs. Temerty and her husband, James, are widespread, North York General remains close to her heart. “It’s the Hospital that’s in my own neighbourhood,” she says. “When I’m there, I feel like I’m home.”

The Koehlers

udy and Rita Koehler have a deep, personal understanding of the important role that North York General Hospital plays in their community. “We have been living in North York since before the Hospital was built,” says Mr. Koehler. “Our sons, our granddaughter, and our great-granddaughter have all used the Hospital. In fact, our great-granddaughter was born at North York General just last July!” To honour their exceptional experiences here and their connection to North York General, the Koehlers have been supporting the Hospital since 1988, and recently made a major commitment to provide much-needed funding toward the expansion of the Family Practice Teaching Unit. The Unit, which is a centre of excellence in residency training, responds to an acute need to train future generations of family physicians. “We have had great service from our own family

doctors, including Dr. Larry Mudie and Dr. David Kaplan, at North York General. I am also very grateful to my cardiologist Dr. Emory Burke,” says Mrs. Koehler. Mr. Koehler has also been seeing Dr. Andrew Clive Braude for the last 20 years. “He has always been friendly and I never feel rushed when I am with him,” says Mr. Koehler. The Koehlers derive great pleasure from their ability to give to NYGH and many other organizations. “I was an immigrant to Canada and I see my giving at North York General as a gift to my community and my neighbours,” says Mr. Koehler. “I think of ‘neighbours’ in the broadest sense,” he continues. “Canada is the best country in the world. I came from Europe where there were two world wars. In Canada, people speak over 200 languages and still manage to live in harmony. We’ve had a wonderful life here – we’ve been married over 56 years!” The Koehlers encourage others to recognize the blessings of their community. “Anybody who is in a position to give, anyone who can afford, should help their neighbours,” says Mr. Koehler. “My own motto is ‘Love, Share, Give!’”

harlotte and Lewis Steinberg understand that philanthropy has the power to transform great institutions and communities. After visiting North York General Hospital as patients and experiencing the quality of care, they decided that they wanted to make a difference. “People in the Hospital were always so friendly,” says Mrs. Steinberg. “The staff was so nice. I felt that we should make a donation.” For Mr. Steinberg, giving at North York General has always felt natural. “Philanthropy is a family tradition,” he says. “We feel fortunate that we’re in a position to make a gift and help others.” The Steinbergs have been leading donors at NYGH for almost 15 years, and their gifts have had a tremendous impact on the care that the Hospital provides. One of their early gifts, in support of Genetics, helped leverage key government support as part of a larger, Ontario-wide investment. On a separate occasion, they helped buy a Navigator, which is used to help diagnose malignancies in the lymph node. As a former x-ray technician in the radiation department of a Montreal hospital, Charlotte understood the anxiety and physical trauma of previous methods of diagnostic testing: “Suddenly, it wasn’t necessary to remove lymph nodes from these patients,” she says. “It made a big difference in their lives.”

During the Stand By Me Campaign, the Steinbergs decided to make their first signature gift at the Hospital, which transformed the Emergency Department and resulted in the naming of the Charlotte and Lewis Steinberg Emergency. “We felt like it was a good time to contribute to the campaign,” says Lewis. “We were hoping it would inspire other people to give, which it did.” Their most recent investment was a $2 million contribution to purchase state-of-the-art digital mammography with tomosynthesis technology. The gift was recognized through the naming of the Karen, Heather & Lynn Steinberg Breast Services program. “When Charlotte heard about these machines, she told me ‘You’ve got to buy them,’” says Lewis. “I just knew how much they would help patients,” adds Charlotte. At the time this technology was purchased, North York General was the only hospital on the Eastern Seaboard where it was available. As the Steinbergs reflect on their many contributions to North York General, what gives them the most pleasure is the impact that their contributions have made. “We feel good about our choices,” says Lewis. “We feel our gifts have been helpful to the Hospital and helpful to the community.”

The Badeaus

n a winter day in 2009, the Badeau family faced a perfect storm. “The same day as my special-needs son, Matthew, fell and broke his hip, my wife, Kathy, was diagnosed with breast cancer,” says Brad Badeau, describing the crisis. For Brad, there was never a question of where his family would seek medical support. Brad explains that his family has lived in the North York General catchment area, and that he has brought his three sons to the Hospital a number of times over the years for broken bones and other emergencies. In addition, Brad has a close personal connection to the Hospital. “My sister Cathie has worked there for many years,” he says. Even on their darkest day, the Badeaus knew that they had put their health in good hands at NYGH. “The Hospital is full of really caring people at all levels,” say Brad. “Everyone has a wonderful bedside manner. Everyone listens. These things are so important in providing patients with confidence.” Both Kathy and Matthew received the care they needed. Brad explains that Matthew was cared for by Dr. Dale Dantzer and had a wonderful experience. “He had pins surgically inserted in his hip and, after three months of convalescence, he was up and around and as good as new,” says Brad.

Kathy was cared for by Dr. Donna McRitchie, and it was her commitment and compassion that inspired the Badeaus to give back. “Once Kathy was on the road to recovery, we approached Dr. McRitchie to ask how we could support the Hospital,” says Brad. “We wanted to make a donation toward something that would be meaningful to her.” Based on their conversation with Dr. McRitchie, the Badeaus made a major financial commitment to the Hospital, and are now the largest philanthropic supporters to the renovation of the BMO Financial Group Breast Diagnostic Centre. The Badeaus know that there are many grateful patients who feel equally motivated to give back, and they know that donors can make a significant difference to the experience that a patient will have in the Hospital. “Why wouldn’t we want to help?” asks Brad. “We know that there’s always a need, and we’re so fortunate to be in a position to contribute.”

The Freemans

uring his many decades as owner of Allan Candy – a leading producer of candy canes and other confections – Zoltan Freeman brought happiness to families around the world. But it was his family’s investment to create the Freeman Centre for Palliative Care at North York General Hospital in 1999 that has brought comfort to almost a thousand patients in their time of greatest need. With the family’s support, the Freeman Centre has emerged as a compassionate, innovative model for care that is appropriate to the patient’s circumstances and best interests. The Centre provides a rare example of a palliative care program with both community outreach and acute inpatient facilities; at the heart of the Centre’s model is a service that matches patients with a physician who can visit them in their home and provide treatment. The outreach work has been coordinated by Virginia Clark Weir, a Clinical Nurse Specialist who has been the “eyes

and ears” for physicians and patients, managing outpatient care and alerting physicians when additional care is needed. The Centre also has six dedicated short-term palliative care suites – designed for warmth and comfort by Zoltan’s wife, Yetta – for patients requiring acute pain and symptom management. “Our daughter Risa has been a physician affiliated with North York General since 1988. We have always been aware of the Hospital’s reputation for providing the most compassionate care, and we were so pleased to help create such an innovative program to help patients at a difficult, vulnerable time,” says Yetta Freeman. Since its inception, the Freeman Centre has had a profound effect on the quality of care provided to end-of-life patients at NYGH. The Centre has created an interprofessional model of care, involving physicians, nurses, social workers, dietitians, pharmacists, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists. The Hospital is also launching the Freeman Fellowship Program, to help train more physicians with expertise in end-of-life care. “As a compassionate society, we know that it is our responsibility to care for dying patients,” says Dr. Risa Freeman. “That’s why our partnership with North York General to establish the Freeman Centre has provided us with so much satisfaction.”

The Hospital Celebrates the Opening of the Volunteer Services Centre for Medical Imaging

oN DeCember 2, 2010, NortH York General Hospital cut the ribbon on the Hospital’s new Volunteer Services Centre for Medical Imaging. The opening gave us an opportunity to thank our group of dedicated volunteers whose hard work and commitment provide a superior experience for our many patients requiring the best medical imaging experience.

The construction of the Centre was made possible by Volunteer Services’ $3 million commitment. The opening of the Centre was the culmination of years of hard work by the Hospital’s hundreds of volunteers. It is also a testament to the major impact that our supporters can make when many donors come together to create a significant contribution. “I can’t thank our Volunteer Services team enough for their vision and commitment to Medical Imaging,” said Dr. Elizabeth LaMere, Chief Radiologist and Medical Director of

Medical Imaging at NYGH. “Your help has provided our patients, families, and staff with a pleasant environment. It’s a humbling experience to witness the years of commitment of service of our volunteers.” Our volunteers are on the front lines everyday, helping patients and families navigate the often-stressful experience of being in a hospital. The new Volunteer Services Centre for Medical Imaging is a perfect tribute to the longtime dedication of our volunteers, and will inspire others for generations to come.

Physicians & Staff Inspire

over tHe past year, tHe North York General Hospital Physicians’ Campaign and Staff Campaign received widespread support from caregivers across the Hospital. The Physicians’ Campaign alone surpassed $1.4 million in funds raised. These funds provide much-needed resources for patient care and treatment.

According to the Physicians’ Campaign’s co-Chairs, Dr. David Kaplan and Dr. Ted Rumble, “the response from our colleagues has been remarkable, because everyone understands that strong support from physicians in the Hospital communicates that we are dedicated to the excellent care provided by our Hospital, and it inspires others in the community to give as well.” The North York General Hospital Staff Campaign also celebrated its successful completion in 2010, with over $220,000 raised. “We were overwhelmed by the level of support from all NYGH Staff, from frontline caregivers to support staff in all areas

of the Hospital’s work,” said Staff Campaign co-Chairs Stuart Goldman and Samia Touma. “To the best of our knowledge, the Hospital has never seen this level of support from staff before. It’s a sure sign of the dedication of our colleagues to the excellence that North York General provides.” The success of both campaigns highlights the importance of philanthropy in providing a positive experience for our patients and their families.

as oNe oF tHe most exCItINg Forms oF pHIlaNtHropy, special events provide many donors with the opportunity to support the Hospital and the Foundation while having fun. The following are just a few of the fundraising events that have engaged our community this year. In June 2010, North York General lost one of its great leaders and champions, Gordon F. Cheesbrough. Gord’s friends and family came together with remarkable passion to honour his legacy by organizing the Cheesbrough Invitational Charity Golf Tournament. The event raised $225,000 to help establish a research fund to support

the Gordon F. Cheesbrough Research Chair in Family and Community Medicine, the first chair of its kind in Canada. North York General Hospital’s inaugural Celebrity Human Race was an exciting two-day adventure throughout North York with teams and celebrities participating in a series of challenges. The 2010 Human Race raised more than $760,000 for the Charlotte & Lewis Steinberg Emergency and the expanding care in our Child and Teen Program. The North York Masters Golf Tournament celebrated its 20th anniversary in May 2010. The event, chaired by Anne Seagrove and Bill LaMere, raised more than $200,000. The longest-running event in the Foundation’s history, the tournament has raised a total of $2.9 million in support of cancer and palliative care. Dominion Canada Insurance hosted its annual Charity Curling Bonspiel at the Donalda Club in March 2011. Thanks to the leadership of Dominion CEO George Cooke and NYGH Foundation Board member Borden Rosiak, more than $25,000 was raised in support of the Hospital’s Child and Teen Program.

Celebrating Support from Across the Community In 2003, Daniel Nestor, Canada’s first-ever Wimbledon champion and a North York native, together with Karl Hale and Peter Henry, created the Daniel Nestor Charity Event. To date the event has raised over $800,000 in support of North York General and Tennis Canada Go for Gold Fund. The 2010 event was held in September at the Donalda Club. The second annual OrthoWalk, a symbolic one kilometre walk around Shops at Don Mills in support of orthopaedic care at North York General, was held in June 2010. Proceeds supported the purchase of much needed equipment. In its first two years, OrthoWalk has raised more $172,000. Slavens and Associates Real Estate Inc. hosted its second annual Slavens Gives Back fundraising event in June 2010 to raise funds for the BMO Financial Group Breast Diagnostic Centre, with proceeds helping to purchase a new ultrasound machine. The first Slavens Gives Back event, in 2009, was inspired by individuals close to the organization who had been diagnosed with cancer. The events have raised over $25,000 to date.

In May 2010, Fairview Mall hosted the inaugural Heels to Heal Walk-a-Thon. Participants, led by the Fairview team, walked across the mall in stiletto heels. The Walk-a-Thon raised over $21,000 to help North York General purchase equipment to treat breast, ovarian and colon cancer below the waist.

Financial Highlights

SuMMARY FINANCIAL INFoRMATIoN

FIsCal 2010-2011 Was asuccessful year for North York General Hospital Foundation. Thanks to the support of you, our donors, we were able to grant over $4 million to the Hospital. Our donors’ generosity allows us to fund important educational initiatives, services, equipment,

facilities and programs in the Hospital. Foundation grants have benefited virtually every area of the Hospital, from helping to complete the renovation of the BMO Financial Group Breast Diagnostic Centre, to purchasing a baby warmer for the Charlotte and Lewis Steinberg Emergency, to establishing the Freeman Family Fellowships to build excellence in palliative care. The Foundation raised almost $9.8 million during the 2010-2011 fiscal year, almost $400,000 more than the previous year. Our endowment holdings were valued at $43.5 million as of March 31, 2011, an increase of $2.6 million over the previous year. Our audited financial statements are available at the Foundation office. If you wish to obtain a copy, please call us at 416-756-6944 or email us at [email protected].

Dr. tim rutledgePresident & CEO North York General Hospital

pHIlaNtHropy Has alWays beeN a key DrIver of excellence at North York General Hospital. Thanks to you, our generous Foundation donors, our Hospital is widely recognized for the exceptional, compassionate care we provide and for the vital role that we play in our community. Also thanks to you, we now stand poised to embark on a period of renewal and growth as we confront the healthcare challenges of the future. In the years ahead, donor support will continue to drive excellence by funding new facilities, leading-edge equipment, and the priorities of our emerging academic strategy. Your support will help us provide the best care today; it will also help us learn from our experience, innovate, and develop the knowledge that will help us and all caregivers continue to improve in the future.

As I set out on my tenure as President and CEO of North York General Hospital, I am inspired by our dynamic and diverse community. Over the past 15 years, I have been honoured to serve our community as a physician and administrator at NYGH, and I know, first-hand, the special bond of trust and support that exists between our Hospital and the members of our community. I look forward to meeting our donors so that I can thank you personally and share with you how your support is transforming the care we provide. Your philanthropies at North York General Hospital are more than a donation; they demonstrate your trust in us and your support of our entire community. We look forward to working with you in the years ahead as you help us chart a bold new course for our Hospital’s future.

Donor Support Continues To Drive Excellence
