Course Purpose and Objectives
Through an examination of a variety of theories, research techniques,
and assessment methods in contemporary personality psychology,
the main aim of this course is to help students develop a basic
understanding of the major theories in personality development.
Students will also learn about the development of psychological
difficulties, and how they parallel personality development.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course students should be able to:
Analyze the fundamental concepts of major personality
theories.
Compare and contrast the major personality theories.
Analyze how different trajectories in personality development
may lead to healthy or pathological personality characteristics.
Describe the developmental nature of psychological disorder in
the context of personality development
Prerequisites PSY113 Co-requisites None
Course Content
The study of the origin, development, structure and dynamics of
personality. Biological and social determinants of personality and its
development, methods of studying personality, the various systems of
psychology and their interpretations of personality structure.
Specific Topics Discussed:
Introduction:
Definition of personality; An overview of the field and important
issues.
Tools of Understanding:
The nature of theory, research and assessment.
The Psychoanalytic Tradition:
Freudian psychoanalysis; Neo-Freudians; Research,
assessment and evaluation.
Phenomenological Approaches:
Humanistic-Existential theories; Research, assessment and
evaluation.
The Trait Perspective:
Trait Theories; Research, assessment and evaluation.
The Behavioral Tradition:
Behaviorism; Research, assessment and evaluation.
Social learning perspective:
Social Learning theories; Research, assessment and
evaluation.
Major Personality Processes:
Intelligence, anxiety, stress, perceived control, aggression,
altruism, sex roles.
Recent developments and contemporary issues pertaining to
the subject-matter of the course.
