This is my initial president’s message in the FOCUS andmy first opportunity to “speak” with fellow UnitedDoberman Club members since being inducted with
other board members at our annual general meeting. Thisyear is the 25th anniversary of our organization, and wekicked off the year with a fabulous UDC national eventin Winchester, Ky., hosted by the Working Dobermannsof the Carolinas. Now we are back home and “down to work,” and there is
much work to be done by me and your board of directors. Some of the major initiatives that we have worked on orare currently working on are the 2015 Fall IPO Classic —providing an opportunity to have a fall trial for our IPOdogs — and replacing our obsolete UDC Registry Program, which is a database program containing records of yourdog’s titles, health reports and ancestry. This is the systemthat generates your annual dog reports each year. We willalso be continuing work on our United Doberman manualsand start looking at the 2016 UDC National. It is important that we hear from you. Your board of
directors and I are here to serve our membership and ouramazing breed. To that end, we are also working on a survey. When you receive this survey, please take the time tocomplete it and communicate back to us. That is the onlyway we will know we are working on the projects and
initiatives that areimportant to you, ourmembers. Also, feel freeto contact your regionaldirector with any issuesyou would like toaddress to the board. The listing of officersand regional directorscan be found on page 6of this FOCUS.I also want to thank a
couple of members:Traci Mulligan for offering to proof read the FOCUS for me,and Michelle “Shelby” Labrie for volunteering to be assistanteditor of the FOCUS. Michelle also put together the first aidarticle and got permission to reprint the article, “Heat Injuryin the Working Dog” by Danielle Bercier DVM. Shelby hasalso volunteered to take over the Breeding Announcementsand Breeder’s Directory for the UDC. Thank you, Shelby! In closing, I would like to mention that we are constantly
seeking volunteers to serve on various committees and helpwith projects being worked on by the board of directors. If you would like to volunteer, you may contact me [email protected].

program. This time, we are highlighting the process ofgetting your IPO title added to your dog’s AKC pedigree.
AKC Recognition of IPO Titles. The UnitedDoberman Club has been recognized by the DobermanPinscher Club of America and the American Kennel Club(AKC) as the “Official Working Dog Organization,” meaningworking titles earned at UDC trials will be recognized onAKC pedigrees and registration papers. For informationabout the rules regarding recording working dog titles forAKC-registered Dobermans, visit this link on the AKC webpage: www.akc.org/events/title-recognition-program/working-dog/
How to Record a Working Dog Title with AKC.The AKC will record Working Dog titles earned in eventsheld by organizations** as requested by breed parent clubsand approved by the AKC. Recording of a title is done at therequest of a dog’s owner through the following process:1. Upon earning a Working Dog title, complete the
Application to Record a Working Dog Title. Download yourapplication at http://images.akc.org/pdf/titles/working_dog/application.pdf.
2. Attach a check or money order for the appropriateamount, or complete the credit card information.3. Mail the application and payment to the AKC.4. AKC will verify and record the title. This can be done
through submitting a copy of the scorebook showing thetitle earned and signed by the judge or through AKCcontacting the recording secretary for the host organization.5. AKC will issue and mail a title certificate to the
recorded owner. Only one title will be recorded perapplication, and only the highest level achieved will appearon the dog’s pedigree. Are you preparedfor theWORST?
by Shelby Frye, VTDC Vice President
It’s a pretty fair gamble to say that, as working Dobermanowners, we have all had those heart-stopping momentsof pure terror. You know the ones — where time slows to
a crawl as you watch your beloved beast barrel head firstinto danger, disaster or mayhem, and you stand there inshock as your lungs stop working, your heart ceases to beatand you couldn’t form a sentence if your life or your dog’slife depended on it. Sometimes there’s no preventing it,there is no stopping it, and if it were playing out on a moviescreen, your long, baritone “NOOooo!” would be the perfectsoundtrack to the drama happening in front of you. Thequestion is, once the unstoppable damage has happened, are you prepared to manage it?We recently posted a poll inquiring if people had a dog
first-aid kit on hand — a remarkable 72 percent of folks did.Of those owners who have a dog first-aid kit, 33 percentof them kept their kit in the home, and 23 percent hadmultiple kits they kept both in the home and in their travelvehicles. 69 percent of the owners polled said that they hada kit and felt confident that they could handle emergencysituations with the contents of their kits. Five percent ofpeople did not feel that they could handle aserious emergency, but that theirkit would aid them with
minor issues.
Only 10 percent of owners felt that they could deal with anemergency without a kit. In a breed bred for athleticism andworking drive, along with its menagerie of known healthissues, is it wise to just roll the dice with your dog’s well-being, or would you rather stack the deck in your favor? So what should you have in your kit to be better prepared?
Basic kit. Here are the absolute basics you should keepon hand according to kit owners:
A medium bag with a sturdy zipper, preferable onethat is waterproof/resistant
Emergency contact numbers: your vet, poison control, local hotels that take pets, boarding shelters
Copy of your dog’s up-to-date vaccines (Keep these ina zip-lock bag with your emergency contacts.)
A current photo of your dogs (in case they get lost) A leash/collar Tick puller/tweezers Gauze or strips of towels Medical tape/Vet Wrap Antiseptic ointment, wipes, lotion, powder or spray Super glue Cotton balls (in a small zip-lock bag) A pill box containing: aspirin, antihistamine, Gas-X,Imodium, any prescription medications your dog takes.
Peroxide Saline Treats/food/bowl Pair of non-latex disposable gloves CPR instructions Wet wipes
Advanced Kit. This kit should include all of the thingsin the basic kit, plus any of these customizable extras:

Portable Vet Kit. This kit should include all things in the basic kit and advanced kit, plus any of these customizable items:
Medical needle and thread Stapler Forceps BP cuff IV fluid and catheters/lactated Ringers solution Blood-stop powder Ear flush Overnight pads Pad wax Numbing spray Clippers Snake-bite kit
Now that you have the list of the most basic to the mostprofessional items, you should decide if you are going tomake your own kit or buy one (or two!). Most owners whohad kits chose to make their own — 63 percent, actually.Another 11 percent bought a pre-made kit, but added to itas they needed. Two percent bought a kit and left it as is,and 9 percent were given a kit as a prize, giveaway or bytheir vet. There are numerous websites out there with goodkits; Googling “first aid kits for dogs” will get you an endlesssupply of choices. Having Googled those exact words andwaded through the Internet, here are my personal top threesites where one can pick up a “basic” kit.
1. Duluth Trading Company Trail Dog First Aid Kit.Why I like it:• It’s a portable, durable size.• It has a first-aid guide written by an emergency vet• It’s waterproof• It contains almost all the items on the “basic” list• It’s a decent price at $25.95
2. Dr Fosters and Smith Canine Friendly Pet FirstAid Kit. Why I like it:• It has belt loops! Or a handle for easy carrying

“I know by having

my dog’s life ...”
16 uniteddobermanclub.com UDC Focus • Summer 2015
• It’s contains most of the items on the “basic” list• Includes a first-aid manual with easy-to-read instructions• It’s a reasonable price at $27.99, which means you canget two, one for your home and one for your car.
3. Baxterboo Ready Dog Gun Dog First Aid Kit. WhyI like it:• Includes quality tools and a lot of the things on the“advanced” list
• Heavy-duty bag with two see-through pockets• Includes a first-aid book• For its contents, it’s a good price at $89.97
Part of the reason I like these three kits is because I havepurchased items from these companies and have never hada bad experience. Of course, you may like other companiesor kits better, and should use your best judgment whilemaking your purchases. You may be like the 63 percent of owners who prefer to
customize their first-aid kit and make their own. In thatcase, most, if not all, of these items can be purchased atyour local drugstore or through your veterinarian. Ofcourse, any of these items can be in any of your kits at any-time, and you should keep more of what you need based onyour individual needs, habitat and life style. You have your kit, so now what? • You should keep your kit(s) in easily accessible places.• Keep your dog’s first-aid kit with your own emergency/
disaster bag. If you don’t have a disaster bag or plan, visitredcross.org for more information and help with planning. • Keep a spare kit in your car or camper/RV, as you never
know when you will come across an emergency situation.• Check and refresh the contents as needed. It’s
suggested to check your supplies every six months. Adding
it to your daylight-savings-day check list can be a great wayto make sure it gets done.• Review and familiarize yourself with basic dog first
aid. Trying to find the instructions in an emergency situation does not make it any easier, but just like trainingfor the IPO field, practice makes perfect. My dogs, like many of you, are my world. I never know
what whacky, funny or entertaining adventures I may getinto with them, but with my first-aid kits, I at least am prepared to tackle an emergency. I know by having my kitsavailable, I may one day save my dog’s life, and that is themain reason I urge owners to carry one. In fact, my kit hassaved my dog’s life and myself a costly vet bill. Here’s an embarrassingly true story of why it’s important
to be prepared. My retired K9 Diessel, a Belgian Malinoisthat now lives a happy, lazy life of leisure, one day swallowed an entire cereal spoon. I won’t get into details, but it came out of my hand and went down his throat in ablink of an eye. Poof, there one second, gone the next. Istood there in awe for about five seconds before runninginto the bathroom where I keep my kit and grabbed the bottle of peroxide. I did not have a large-bore syringe or aturkey baster to dump it down his throat, but I knew fromfamiliarizing myself with dog first aid that I could mix theperoxide with something sweet, like ice cream, and the dogwould drink it all on his own. Sure enough, a quarter of agallon of ice cream, ½ cup of peroxide and 100 throws ofhis ball later, and up came the spoon. I was calm (mostly)because I was prepared, and had saved Diessel from death oran expensive and invasive surgery. And let’s be honest, I use half the stuff in their kits fixing
my own injuries sustained while training, playing and living life with working Dobermans.

My first Doberman was a black female that was verysweet, but she was handler soft and shut down easily. I knew for my next Dobe that I wanted a red
male with stronger nerve, along with good drive and workethic for agility and obedience. In January of 2005, Istarted to look for a male puppy, but did not know whichbreeders were breeding for the “Total Doberman.” I hadgotten involved with Doberman Rescue MN shortly aftergetting my first Dobe, and became friends with LauraHulke, who was president of DRM. Since Laura had beenpart of the Doberman community for quite a while, Iasked her if she knew a good breeder who had an upcom-ing litter that should do well in performance sports. Shetold me about a breeding that Julie Stade, BJF Dobermans, had planned between her female, Kansa's Veritas Vos Liberabit, a Gino Gomez daughter, and her male, BJFCrescendo v Aquarius, a Bro son that had several obediencetitles and was the fifth Doberman to earn both an AKCchampionship and Schutzhund III. Laura told me thisshould be an exceptional litter, and she would love to havea puppy from it if she had room for another Dobe. The next month I contacted Julie to introduce myself
and to ask to be considered for a red male from this breedingif one became available. There were three puppies born inthe litter: one black female, one black male and one red male.I was so happy when Julie said the red boy would be mine! From the moment I brought Ryun home, I could tell
he was different from my female. He made constant eyecontact with me and loved to train. He was and still is veryfood motivated, and will tug until my arms drop. It is sucha joy to train a dog that doesn’t want to stop working untilyou do. He has always done whatever I have asked and ismy constant companion.Ryun passed his Adult Temperament Test a couple weeks
after his second birthday. I will never forget the conditions
under which we were tested. It was at the 2007 UDC National in Decatur, Ill., and the weather was horrible, tosay the least. We had heavy rain coupled with high windsthat made it difficult for both Ryun and me to see. Ryunhad no prior bitework training — he had never seen adecoy. I wasn’t even sure how he would handle the adverseweather conditions. At first he moved side to side in frontof me, just watching the aggressor without barking. Thenwhen the aggressor came toward us, it was like someoneflipped a switch and he went to the end of leash barking. I had all I could do to remain upright and hang on to him. I was both startled and pleased with his reaction … it wasan experience I will never forget! At the 2008 UDC National, Ryun received two CCs and
went Reserve Winners Dog. In July of 2008, we went toDenver for a regional show, and Ryun received his third CC to complete his UDC championship. My first love is agility, then obedience, so Ryun and I
have spent most of our time in the NADAC and AKC agilityrings. Ryun is a dog with a lot of muscle and bone, whichdoesn’t make him the fastest agility dog, but he has earnedseveral titles over the years due to his consistency and awesome jumping ability; he seldom knocked a bar. Ryunretired from agility competition at age 8 when he started refusing jumps. At first I thought this was due to arthritis, but further investigation by my vet revealed a partially torncruciate ligament in his left leg. Now at 10 years old he enjoys digging up moles, chasing chipmunks, spendingsunny days on the deck or snoozing on the futon. Ryun hastruly been the dog of my dreams … I love him dearly!

Here are the Six Stages of Basic Tracking 101, the generalprogression for training your dog to track:
Stage 1. Dog eats food that is laid on the track, and isnot easily distracted by variations in the track (such ascurves, turns, changes in cover and distractions) to arrive atthe jackpot, usually food. Food combined with the track isused to increase drive and confidence.
Stage 2. Dog follows track, checking each footstep evenwhen there is not food present in every step, and the dognow can negotiate variations in the track without unduestress. Track ends with a food jackpot or article (dog determines which one).
Stage 3. Dog follows track with random bait, and willindicate an article at the end of a stretch of track containingno food. The track always ends at an article. Simultaneously, there is often focus on proper article indication (motiva-tional) that is done in the absence of a track.
Stage 4. Dog tracks for articles (where dog gets fed). There is generally no food on the track, and the distance between articles is initially pretty small and regular, gradually mov ing toward randomness. Some dogs should/can have bait between articles when the distance is largeenough between food and article(s).
Stage 5. Dog will track for articles and can negotiateturns and long stretches without any reward. Rewardsshould now be random and earned by the best behaviorshown by the dog. However, it is important to not make the dog work for
nothing too frequently or the dog will find tracking unrewarding and may quit, just as you would quit your jobif you didn't get paid!
Stage 6. Dog will track at end of line for articles and cannegotiate turns and long stretches without a reward. Dog isaccustomed to trial procedure (check in, people following or watching, check out). Handler knows all rules and regulations pertaining to trial entry, and is prepared to read the dog at the end of the line and adjust handlingshould it be necessary.
Tracking takes practice. It is often helpful to track threeor more times per week since it gives the dog multiplechances to learn. Familiar locations and easy conditions(visible) are good times to move forward in stages. It is important to regress in training when conditions are difficult (new) or the dog has had a longer-than-usual breakfrom tracking. As you move forward in stages, don't forgetto mix in tracks to reinforce the foundation!

Editors Note: This is a reprint of an article that appeared in the FOCUS years ago written by former UDC President Anne Rammelsburg. This article is as relevant today as it was at the time it was written. I thought it would be a good
idea to include it in this working dog issue. If you have a favorite article from the past, please let me know and I can share it with our new members! — Linda Lindic
By Anne Rammelsburg
Tracking 101: The VERY Basics!
Laying Tracks• Know the conditions of the area whereyou will lay the track, including: cover, temperature, wind, precipitation, moisture and time of day.
• Know the dog: its experience level, drive, what the dog likes/dislikes andwhat is easy/hard for that dog.
• Lure vs. reward; frequency intervals;reward size and variety; why random?
• Teaching article indications: on and off the track
Reading the dog's tracking behavior• Au naturale or modified behaviors?• Motivation or drive level: calm vs. hectic dogs
• Working out a problem, lost or distracted?
Line handling• Helping vs. hindering• Maintaining obedience to the track
Planning training sessions• Have a goal; know all the componentrequirements to meet that goal.
• Keep a journal or log to help you learnfrom successes/ mistakes of both youand the dog
• Balance the use of “easy” and “hard”tracks during training sessions.

Heat InjuryHeat Injuryin Sports and
Working Dogsby Danielle Bercier, DVM
Photos by Alissa Weaver
Heat injury is a common occurrence in sport andworking dogs. If the early stages are identified andmanaged, further progression, with potentially
life-threatening consequences, can be avoided. Severecases can result in chronic health issues, including kidney failure and sensitivity to heat. Heat injury is somuch more than an overly hot dog. This article will help make you aware of the dog’s normal cooling mechanisms, signs of heat injury, treatment of heat injury and preventive measures to help avoid the problem.
Normal Temperature Regulation. The normaltemperature for a dog is 99-102 degrees Farenheit; however, an elevation to 107 degrees during work can be normal in a fit, athletic dog for short periods. This elevated temperature (hyperthermia) becomes a problemif the body looses its ability to compensate and cool itselfin a reasonable time. The canine body uses several mechanisms to dissipate body heat. Panting increases air flow over moist surfaces in the oral cavity and upperrespiratory tract for evaporative cooling. As the surfacescool, so does the superficial blood, which continues tocirculate. Panting breaths are shallow and rapid — up to300 per minute. The goal is to bring as much cooler airinto contact with these surfaces as possible. There are
runs of deeper breaths among the panting for improvedoxygenation, until the dog is in severe distress when thisbecomes impossible. The heat of the tissues is absorbedby the water content of the saliva in the mouth, and the water that covers the respiratory tract. As this waterevaporates, it carries the heat energy, releasing it into theenvironment. This is only effective if the gums are moistand the environment is not humid, i.e., saturated withwater-filled air. When self-correcting via panting, dogsoften dip their muzzles or heads into water, biting into itas they drink. This not only adds coolness, but increasesthe available water for heat transport.Contrary to popular belief, dogs have sweat glands
on their paws around the pads that assist in evaporativecooling. Some dogs learn to cool off by standing orsplashing in water. The paws also take advantage of the radiation of body heat directly into the cooler environment. This explains the moist paw prints left on a cool floor by a hot dog. The radiation of body heat ismuch more efficient than the evaporative efforts of panting, and occurs across the entire body. Dogs oftentake advantage of this by lying on concrete rather thangrass on a summer day. It is with evaporative cooling thatwe can intervene the most actively and effectively in

helping to cool a dog. Heat is energy, and it always transfersfrom a warmer to a colder body or place. (With apologies tothe physicists, I think we can leave it at that!) For radiantcooling to be most effective, the environment needs to besignificantly cooler than the body, and have low humidity.
Signs of Heat Injury. It can be difficult to notice earlysigns of heat injury in very high-drive dogs, especially ifyou’re not looking for them. These dogs keep on going untilthey physically cannot, rather than being obvious abouttheir stress. There are early signs, and you have to be carefuland pay attention to your dog to be able to identify them. Some of the clues that your dog is getting overheated aredescribed below in no particular order, as each will worsenas the injury progresses: 1. Shade seeking. We’ve all seen dogs take their reward
into the blind’s shade, or even the handler’s shade. It meansthey need a break now, not after you run the blinds threemore times. In a fit dog, this might mean a 10-minute breakbefore doing the exercise again, with the plan to do justenough that the session ends on a positive note. You can always bring the dog out again later. 2. Slowing down. Whether running blinds for the fourth
time or playing catch for fun, the dog may return to youslowly or incompletely because it knows you will make it go again. As the dog moves slowly, or stands to rest, it may
literally sway on it feet as the condition worsens. Conversely, as a dog’s distress progresses, it may run in adisjointed (“spaced out”) manner, without heed to yourcall, toward the last place it found water or coolness. At thispoint, you should know there is a problem: glassy eyes, loudgaspy panting, ears may be folded in an unusual fashion. 3. Excessive panting. The mouth opens wide and lips
retract to expose more of the mouth’s interior to the coolerair. The gums and tongue progress from light pink to darkerred as the saliva changes from copius clear liquid to athicker white foam or paste-like consistency. The body’sdrive to reduce the temperature does not allow the intermittent runs of deeper breaths, so the body becomesstarved for oxygen. When the mouth becomes dry, evaporative cooling does not take place. The muscular activity of non-productive panting increases the body temperature further. 4. Incoordination (ataxia). This includes components of
both muscle fatigue and mental dullness. Heat injury in thelater stages leads to a dog stumbling, leaning on objects tohold itself up, loosing consciousness and possibly seizuring.
Treatment. The most important aspect of treatment israpid, effective cooling. Read that sentence again. The im-portant words are rapid and effective. Be sure the dog haswater to drink. Small amounts continued on next page
are better than a large drink at once.Placing the dog in the truck with theAC going may be enough, or it mayneed to be rinsed with a hose andplaced before a fan to enhance airflow. Remember to rinse water in the dog’s mouth for improved evaporation. But gently, we don’twant to choke him! If the animal is unconscious, the risk of choking is too great for rinsing the mouth.Immersing the dog in a pool is not as cooling as moving water over hisbody, but it will help. Focus waterflow on areas where blood vessels are closer to the surface for heat radiation: abdomen, inner legs, headand neck. Major blood vessels are inthe neck. This is a good place for ice, especially in dogs with a heavy ruffwhere water won’t be as effective.Play the water on the mouth andpaws for evaporation. Take a rectaltemperature for a starting point. It is important that your efforts do
not allow the dog to become toocool. Once the temp drops to 103 degrees, relax your cooling efforts; the body will continue to cool a bit.Don’t forget to calm the dog as well; anxiety and stresscan increase body temperature on their own. Check thetemp every five minutes or so. If the dog is in severe distress, consider it a veterinary emergency. Crank up thetruck and let the AC run while you cool the dog downwith water, then put him into the cool vehicle for a rideto the vet. In severe cases, it is important to have a veterinary evaluation — the dog may be dehydrated andin need of intravenous fluids or oxygen therapy. Severeheat injury carries the risk of kidney failure, irregularheart beats, shock and cellular muscle destruction. One ofthe more common and most devastatingconsequences is disseminated intravascular coagulation, or DIC. Thisoccurs when high temperatures damagethe lining of the blood vessels, causingmalfunctions in the blood-clottingmechanisms. Initially, tiny clots areformed throughout the body, literallyclogging the smallest vessels, leading toorgan damage. As the body exhausts itsability to form clots, there is internalbleeding. Blood work can identify theseproblems as well as the early presence ofDIC in time for potential treatment tobe attempted. The internal damage doneby a severe case of heat injury canprogress for several days, so your vetmight repeat some blood work. It is notuncommon for a dog that experiences asevere incident of heat injury to losesome degree of heat tolerance.
Prevention. The good news is thatthere are many ways we can avoid heatinjury in our sport dogs. Consider anaverage training weekend and how thefollowing ideas can be put into play. When you show up to the club, thedog should have a fitness level equal to the demands of training. This is soimportant, and often overlooked.Schutzhund is hard! It is physically andmentally demanding of a dog. Physicaldiscomfort causes mental stress, and adog that trains hard only on the week-ends, and ends up sore and tired everytime, will not continue to be an eagerpartner. It has been shown in manyspecies that stress inhibits learning. Time must be allocated three to four
days a week for conditioning. Jogging, hiking, biking, running alongside ahorse — do what works for you. Thebest way to condition a dog for a task(barking, running blinds, long tracks) isto do that task, building up to longertimes and farther distances. Six blindson a regulation field is nearly a half-mile run. Maximum points require the dog to be fast. Exercising and conditioning is a whole topic in itself, but get started on something! Your vet
should be able to offer suggestions or resources. As the handler, it is your responsibility to stop when
the dog needs a break. Don’t be afraid to stand up to avisiting coach and take care of your animal. The “She’llrun these blinds a dozen times till she gets it right!” attitude does not make you a good trainer. Knowing yourdog is exhausted, but continuing because you don’t wantpeople to think you’re wimpy or your dog can’t do thework is foolish. Your dog needs your protection. Young ornew people to the sport need an example of how to treattheir canine partners.

Heat continued from page 37
Panting increases air flow over moist surfaces in the oral cavity and upper respiratory tract for evaporative cooling.
Allowing the dog to relax and rollbefore putting it back in the truckcan help bring body temp down.
Consider how you arrive at the club. Driving to thefield with the AC cooling the car to 45 degrees, then un-loading and going to train in temperatures of 90F with 80percent humidity is very hard on the dog. On the last 20minutes of the drive, let the car warm up a bit. After thedog works enough to be hot on a really hot day, put himin the car with the AC running for 15 minutes to helpcool him down more rapidly. When you’re parked at thefield, pay attention to shade, even if you have to park a little farther away. When the shade shifts, vehicles can be moved. Air flow is of prime importance. Open windows or
even doors in the vehicle to find a cross breeze. You mayhave to pull the crate out of the vehicle to get some airflow. Covering the crate with a blanket because youhaven’t taught your dog not to bark makes it pretty stifling. Some commercial dog boxes that are used intruck beds have minimal air vents. Be sure you researchbefore you select one. The argument that “I have to closehim in or he’ll bark” is ridiculous and unsafe. Maybe youcan park farther from the field. These dogs can be taughtnot to bark nonstop in their crates. Always bring more water than you need, and consider
a fan to place in front of the crate. There are several on the marketthat run on batteries or the 10Vplug in the truck. During training, be sure to allow
the dog to drink before and afterwork. In general, dogs drink whenthey need to — give them the opportunity. If they show earlysigns of heat stress, stop, coolthem, give them water and a break.Even if they are just tired and panting heavily but not stressed, give them a break for a few minutes. As fitness improves, thedog’s need for rest breaks decreases.Just like the rest of us! When yoursession is over, don’t run back to
the truck, close the dog in and go backto the field to watch. Walk the dogaround a bit to radiate some body heatand cool down those muscles, offer hima drink and make sure he’s okay. Mostdogs that are panting heavily will sit upin the crate to make breathing easier, but as they cool and panting decreases, they are able to lie down and rest. Try tofigure out what is normal for your dog.Go back after five or 10 minutes andcheck on your dog if you’re concerned. A common cause of heat injury is
dogs left in closed cars. A former K9 officer shared the following preventivemeasure with me: If you leave your dog in a vehicle with the AC running, always leave windows down a couple of inches. If the vehicle quits running, hot air will rise and escape, and the dog will be less likely to die. WorkingK9s die every year when they are left
in a running vehicle with the AC on, because the engine stops. This topic has particular importance to me because I
have a German Shepherd dog that is very sensitive toheat injury after incurringheat stroke at a young age.He suffers a moderate to severe heat injury an averageof twice a year from chasingdragonflies or fence running. The symptoms I describedearlier are from many observations of him as well asfrom veterinary client dogs.Needless to say, he spendssummer days in the house ifI’m not around to keep aneye on him. Please don’t letthis happen to you! Happy training!

Dogs often take advantage of radiationof their body heat bylying on concrete on a summer day.
Some dogs learn to cool off bystanding or splashing in water.
