PAW PRINTS | November 2014 Volume XXVI Number XI 1 THEO: A MUCH MISUNDERSTOOD YET AWESOME DOG! By Kathy Kelly-Weston T he puzzle that is Theo is one several people have tried to understand. For those of us who have known him for a long while and have seen a loving, loyal, playful side, we are baffled by his fearful reactiveness to strangers who try to touch or even get too close to him. It is only clear that Theo has had some past scars from abuse which he has yet to fully overcome. Once Theo has decided to trust someone, he is completely open to all the affection and touching he can get, belly rubs, butt scratches and all. He will generously slather kisses upon those he trusts, and his tail wags are full-rear-end-so-happy-to-see-you-out-and-out-ecstatic waggles. Theo has great potential for loving anyone who can devote the time and trust and commitment to him that he so desperately needs. But getting Theo beyond his initial barriers of fear at meeting new people has been the challenge that is yet to be resolved. So what has been tried so far? First, it starts with belief: the belief that Theo can be a wonderful companion and can move beyond his scarred past and fearful issues. At this point I must say I applaud all the trainers, volunteers, and especially Theo’s foster mom for believing in him. Theo has excellent leash manners, knows many commands, and even sits patiently at every street corner waiting to respond to the command to “go,” or “stay” or “wait.” His intelligence and responsiveness in training has been exemplary. Socializing Theo with other dogs has also been a shining example of his good manners. Theo has had a positive influence on other dogs, and those dogs that walk beside him blossom in their own confidence and truly enjoy his presence. At this time, Theo is working with Lorraine May and Karen White who are not giving up on him. Volunteers whom Theo does not know are needed to help in this project of trying to show Theo it is okay to start to trust new people in his life. With a basket muzzle and leash, Theo will sit beside his foster mom and be calm and still while she converses with someone Theo has not yet met. The goal, of course, is to reward Theo for calmly accepting the situation without any fearful outbursts. The ultimate reward for Theo in the end, we hope, is improving his chances for adoption into a forever home. What will be the rewards for the person adopting Theo? I believe it will be a life filled with triumphant happiness and fond memories, for Theo is a very special and loving companion. He will bring a smile to your face every day. A game of fetch, a hike around a lake, a splash in a creek, squirrel watching at the park, all of the simple joys Theo loves could be your loves, too, if you are the lucky one to have him.

THEO: A MUCH MISUNDERSTOODYET AWESOME DOG!By Kathy Kelly-Weston

The puzzle that is Theo is one several people havetried to understand. For those of us who haveknown him for a long while and have seen a loving,

loyal, playful side, we are baffled by his fearful reactivenessto strangers who try to touch or even get too close tohim. It is only clear that Theo has had some past scarsfrom abuse which he has yet to fully overcome.

Once Theo has decided to trust someone, he is completelyopen to all the affection and touching he can get, bellyrubs, butt scratches and all. FROM THE WORLD OF GUSWhen it starts to get cold around here (and it was thesame when we all lived on the farm in South Carolina)the two-leggers start talking about “the holidays.” Theynever explained to me what that means. If Gypsy hasany idea about what that means she won’t tell me; shealways acts as if she knows something that I don’t, butmostly I think she is just bluffing.

From what I can see holidays are a time when two-leggersget all nervous and tired, worrying about things. Butthey do eat a lot more and that’s a good thing. It wouldbe a better thing if Mom and Dad would stop saying,“No, you can’t have that; it’s not good for dogs.”

Sometimes Mom and Dad take what they call “vacations”during their so-called “holiday time.” I have absolutelyno idea what “vacations” actually are for them. For uspets it’s a time when Mom and Dad get out the boxeswith handles, and put most of their clothes in them. They go away and don’t come home at night. In fact, they don’t come home for many nights. The man thattakes care of me is nice but it is not fun when Mom andDad don’t come home at night. All the dogs and cats getworried that they won’t ever come home. They alwaysdo come home, and then spend time with us, and telleach one of us that they missed us. That’s fun, butstill… I wish they would throw those boxes with handles away but they never do. They just put themaway in closets until the next “vacation.”

The cats, by the way, like the boxes with handles. Fullor empty, they love to get into the boxes. The catswould spend all day and night in the boxes if they were allowed to. But that’s just the way cats are, I guess.

TOP TEN TIPS FOR FEEDINGPETS THANKSGIVING LEFTOVERShttp://www.petmd.com

Be Prepared When Your Pet Comes BeggingWith the holidays approaching, your dog or cat willinevitably be begging to partake in the big turkey dinner. This year, before preparing a heaping plateful for your pet, consult a vet and consider these 10 tips to keep Thanksgivinga safe, healthful holiday for your dog or cat.

#10 Yes to TurkeyTurkey can be a wonderful lean protein to share withyour pet. Remove any excess skin or fat, stick withwhite meat, and make sure there are no bones.

#9 No to Onions, Garlic, Leeks and ScallionsSmall, well-cooked portions of these foods can be okayif your pet is used to it, but ingesting these foods inlarge quantities can lead to toxic anemia.

#8 Yes to Mashed PotatoesPotatoes are a great, filling vegetable to share with your pet. Beaware of additional ingredients used to make mashed potatoes.

#7 No to GrapesGrapes have been shown to cause kidney failure in dogs.

#6 Yes to Cranberry SauceIt is probably best to only provide a small helping toyour pet’s plate.

#5 No to XylitolSweeteners containing Xylitol are poisonous to animals, and potentially deadly to dogs.

Mom saw Gizmo studying something very intently in the window well and went over to see what was so interesting.Well guess what! There sat a small mouse looking back at Gizmo. Boy did Gizmo really want out there. Of courseMom would not let him out. She said the mouse was so cute and had such beautiful, soft brown almost velvet lookingfur. All Gizmo saw was a “great toy.” He has given Mom mouse gifts before but she said it did not appear that he haddone anything to them so maybe he just played with them and they died of fright. The next issue was how to get themouse out of the window well and set it free. First they tried putting a box on its side and put some bacon grease inthere to see if he would go inside. I thought everyone and everything liked bacon but evidently mice do not because he only ran in very fast and then ran out and never went back. That night they took the box out and tried to come up with adifferent strategy for the next day. Meanwhile Gizmo spent a lot of time watching the mouse and begging to get out there.

Day two of CAT TV began with Mom putting some critter food out for the mouse and a small dish with water. She said it was not going to starve on her watch. I am not sure what that means but the mouse sure liked the foodand water. Dad came up with the idea to put a long piece of wood into the window well and the mouse could walkup and free himself. Well, the mouse sniffed the wood and then went back to his hiding place behind a piece ofslate leaning against the window well wall. In the afternoon Mom check on him but he had not gone up the woodso she got some cheese and put in on the wood spaced apart so he would, hopefully, follow the cheese to freedom.

Day three of CAT TV began with despair as the mouse was still there and had not eaten any of the cheese. Mom wasreally sad so she put out some more critter food and water so he would not starve. Well he stayed the rest of the day.

Day four of CAT TV and the mouse is GONE along with all the cheese pieces! Mom is happy but Gizmo is not.He keeps looking out the window for the mouse. Mom finally let Gizmo into the window well and you wouldthink he was a dog the way he sniffed all around the place and then he just sat on the window sill and watched forthe longest time. For the next three days he kept watch, off and on, but at last he finally gave up.

Gizmo complains that nothing ever happens at home and that is why he does not get as much print time. Hecould have written this from his view point but he did not so I had to do the job.

MEET SOME MAXFUND DOGSBy Ilene Johnson

JAKE

What is the veryfirst thing younotice about thisone year oldChihuahua mix? Helooks like a hand-some miniatureGerman Shepherd!

Jake came to MaxFund from another shelter, so wedon’t know a lot about his very early life. However, wedo know that he is quiet, easy–going, playful and loving. Sounds pretty perfect, doesn’t he?

Jake gets along with other small dogs, and does well inhis play groups, where he loves to play with the otherlittle dogs. This youngster is active, but also quiet inhis kennel. Jake has attended Champs classes, where heis learning basic commands. He is ready to learn somuch more.

Jake loves to give kisses, and is rumored to be one ofthe best kissers at MaxFund. He loves to be held. He islooking for a quiet home without young children, where he will be loved and get the attention he sodeserves to get.

If you are looking for a quiet little guy who wants tolove you, then you have found him! Jake is also available for fostering, if you are not ready to make a forever commitment. Please come see Jake.Additionally, the folks at MaxFund can tell you allabout the benefits of fostering.

MAC

Mac is an incredibly handsome Border Collie-AustralianShepherd mix. Kathy Kelly-Weston, one of the (many)

volunteers who love him, offered her thoughtsabout Mac:

To me, Mac is a gem of adog. Part Border Collie, part Australian Shepherd,he is the perfect combi-nation of intelligence andathleticism, and com-pletely loving and loyal

when he comes to know you. He is sensitive and intune with everything around him, so to understandhim, he can be both shy and a little nervous at times, which I believe is due to his lack of finding a trulyunderstanding, compassionate human companion forlife. Yet no dog is more deserving of a loving, stablehome; the joy Mac can bring to someone's life is thereready to give for all his life.

It is my wish that someday Mac will learn the blissfulsecurity of a stable, forever home. He is always openlyseeking approval and love of that special someone outthere who will simply love him back. What strikesmost people meeting him is his stunning good looks, but what he really needs is someone with a heart thatwill look deep into his beautiful spirit.

What does Mac need to be able to successfully win agood home? I believe someone who is there at homefor Mac much of the time is key. Secondly, someonewho will make him feel loved, secure and give him theexercise he needs. For Mac is an athlete, and his breedneeds activity from time to time, such as playing fetchand Frisbee. Mac is a quick learner and a masterfultennis ball fetcher as well as a talented Frisbee catcher. He loves outdoor hikes and absolutely craves interac-tion with humans. Another plus for Mac would be ahome with other dogs, for he is very sociable withother dogs of all breeds and sizes. Mac even toleratespups that bite his ears and he is gentle with them. When Mac goes on walks side by side with other dogs, both he and the other dog relax and enjoy each other'scompany and feel happy. Mac has lived with cats, sothat is also more company for him in a home. BorderCollies need stimulation of the body and brain, andsimply placing Mac in a kennel is not a good idea for adog that is from a herding breed.

Mac knows several commands and at 5 years old, he isstill capable of learning even more. Dogs like Mac arenaturally talented and usually can thrive and blossomin agility training, though just a bit a interactive funand strolls to the park are great for him. He is smartenough to jump into water to cool off on hot days andthen go back to a game of fetch or Frisbee. Life couldbe joyful for Mac with the right person who appreciatesand loves him.

That is my greatest wish for my very awesome buddy, Mac!

Thanks so much to Kathy Kelly-Weston for her beautiful write-up. Please come and meet this magnificent boy, who has so very much to offer.

Dear MaxFund,

The story of stimpy’s rescue brought tears to my eyes. You folks really go “above and beyond”.I am sending this to help with the cost of rescuingStimpy.
