IntroductionAfter starting my own company in The Netherlands for Business Consultancy / Information Management

/ Information Security and Business Intelligence, I also started reading books and articles about (online)

marketing, tax benefits in several countries across the globe and other interesting trends regarding

entrepreneurship. New trends and technological developments make the set-up of a business in a

foreign country easy and interesting. Especially the trends related to The New Working (by working

location and time independent) make international entrepreneurship very interesting for anyone. In this

publication I’m discussing the latest tips and tricks.

The New WorkIn the past years a lot of businesses and companies showed up a lot of interest for new concepts to work

location and time independently. This concept is called The New Work. Many books and articles about

this concept write about the way how work is organized and that the current way is outdated (2012).

The traditional approach for organization is deprecated because of the unstoppable developments of

new information and communication technologies. These developments made it easy for everyone to

communicate with anyone and share information 1.

Following the digital and technology push, new approaches for organization are developed. These

approaches use ICT-solutions in a ery efficient and effective way. The key aspect is that people start

working smarter; being pro-actively aware of factors such as time, place and responsibilities. One of the

most recognizable principles of The New Work is working location and time independently. You have

probably heard the onliner “Anytime, Anywhere” before.

For speaking with customers it isn’t necessary to work from a single, steady location. This principal

belongs to The New Work concept and has developed to the hype “Anytime, Anywhere”, also known as

telecommuting? Futhermore, new techniques make it possible to have location independent meetings.

Several suppliers of network hardware provide solutions for virtual / digital conferencing. A virtual

conference-room is builded up with LCD televisions and proper network hardware. This perspectivemakes new approaches possible for meeting people in foreign countries and doing international

businesses.

International EntrepreneurshipBroadband internet is almost everywhere in the world available.

Based on an investigation in 2014 by Internet World Stats, 45% of

the people in Asia are connected to the internet with a

broadband connection like ADSL or Cable internet 2. I was

surprised that 10.1% of the people in North America are

connected to the internet in 2014. Now think of the possibilities.

By using the internet, many strategies and new organization

approaches are possible. People can do marketing, sell things,

virtually meet each other, etc.. From this perspective, international entrepreneurship is available for

anyone.

Virtual OfficesA new trend that recently grew in popularity is the use of a virtual office. It is no longer needed to go

abroad for setting up a company in a foreign country. For a small fee of up and nearby EUR 50,- a month

you get a postal address for your company, a nice lady who can handle phonecalls and basic internet

and e-mail services. This is an efficient and quick solution to set-up a foreign business. Run your business

professionally without the costs of a physical office. Before you start a foreign company and set-up a

business, you need to follow a few basic marketing steps. Those are explained in the next section of this

publication.

Choosing a countryDue to the emergence of virtual offices, the threshold to start an international business or to expand

your current business abroad is substantially lower. You can choose for a country with attractive laws

and regulations in relation to your industry, niche or product. Similarly, local supply and demand can be

an incentive to open a virtual office in the country of choice. Below is a brief description of the mostattractive countries for starting and/or expanding your business.

MalaysiaMy personal preference in South Eastern Asia is Malaysia. In the

capital Kuala Lumpur is a large expatriates community with

people who not only work as a foreigner in Malaysia, but also a

lot of people who started their own businesses and companies.

First of all, Malaysia has a very attractive government-program

for getting a working permit with ten years stay: MM2H.com.

Many expatriats and people who would like to retire in a tropical breeze apply for their MM2H visum. It

is commonly recommended to visit an authorized agency that could assist you with the application

process3. You could find a lot of these agencies in Kuala Lumpur. Furthermore, an MM2H visum is about

the same price as a business visum. The ten years stay which is granted upon approval could be seen as

a free gift.

Tax haven

Another benefit of Malaysia for doing businesses around the globe are the taxes. First of all; foreign

income isn’t taxed4. Malaysia taxes both residents and nonresidents only on income derived from a

Malaysian source or received in Malaysia. Take this aspect into consideration when you look for aforeign country to open up a virtual office. Legal tax-tricks make this very beneficial. So next thing you

need is a Malaysian bank account. There are many to choose from, some with very nice interests. The

Hong Leong Bank currently gives up to 3.5% interest on your pay and save account5.

PanamaPanama is (from a tax perspective) just as beneficial as Malaysia. Foreign income isn’t taxed and the

country knows many extra’s, like (tax)reductions when investing in tourism. This zero taxation policy of

foreign income applies to resident individuals residing in Panama as well as Panamanian companies. The

taxable income includes all Panamanian-source

income, such as salaries, compensations for

personal services, income from investments, income from commercial, industrial or agricultural

activities, and expenses paid by an employer on

behalf of an employee (e.g. educational expenses,

rental payments and entertainment expenses).

The following categories of income are exempt

from tax 6: (1) taxable net income not exceeding

PAB 11,000 per year; (2) employment income not

exceeding PAB 10,400 per year derived by

individuals which is their only source of income;(3) dividends and other profit distributions paid by small or medium-sized enterprises to their

shareholders or partners; (4) payments of up to PAB 5,000 made to employees upon termination of

employment; (5) gains from public lotteries, games or bets; (6) inheritances, legacies and gifts; (7)

income of individuals engaged in farming, provided that the annual gross income does not exceed PAB

250,000; and (8) dividends on nominative preferred shares when certain conditions are met.

As an individual, you can become a resident of Panama in several ways.

The NetherlandsMany people don’t know that Holland also has a lot of tax benefits and is willing to become a popular

tax haven for doing businesses. Many multinationals have an office or their HQ in The Netherlands. This

has been investigated in the SOMO report: “The Netherlands –  A Tax Haven?”. This SOMO report7

investigates the extent to which the Netherlands can be regarded as a tax haven, and analyses the

factors behind this, such as the unique network of bilateral treaties for the avoidance of double taxation

and the special fiscal regimes for group financing operations. It estimates the number of ‘mailboxcompanies’, mostly established to route financial flows through the Netherlands purely for fiscal

reasons, at almost 20,000, and this number has been increasing rapidly in recent years.

Manicipulity Goeree-Overflakkee, Middelharnis  2013 - Now

Information management

Bij operating on the border between IT and business, I feel like a fish in the water. I gather (political)ambitions, targets and strategic boundaries regarding information-technologies, new trends and

business approaches. I translate these elements to a strategic or tactical plan whereby information-

currents, architecture, business processes and IT are aligned together and amongst each other. I also

advice the management board and city council about IT-related questions. Furthermore I’m leading

projects, programs and I’m responsible for the enterprise information security as a Security Officer.

As an integral IT-advisor for the Manicipulity Goedereede I operated at the (political) borders of business,

organisation, processess and information technologies. I was responsible for proactive development,

implementation and evaluation of strategic and tactical IT-approaches and architecture scenario's

belonging to the goals and ambitions of the management / city council. Furthermore I was responsible

for the operation of the IT-department and gave advice about organisationwide questions regarding IT. I

also managed projects and programs regarding IT-governance and business intelligence.

Manicipulty Goedereede, Goedereede 2007 - 2009

System- and network engineer

As a system and network engineer i guarded the quality, safety and availability of the IT-network of the

manicipulity Goedereede. This was my primary task. Furthermore i installed appliations, maintained the

operation of all workspaces and doing technical maintenance of the IT-network and all of its

components. I was also involved in several migration- and implementation projects.

Big projects:

Strategic- and tactical plan for information managemen 2014-2017

Manicipulity Goeree-Overflakkee 2014

Role: Author and programmanager

To bridge the gab between business and (IT) information flows and processes, i was the author for a plan

and programmanager for coordinating the implementation projects. Strategic and tactical questions

regarding innovation and alignment of the IT-department were translated to operational projects.

Setting up Information Security 2013 - 2014

Manicipulity Goeree-Overflakkee

Role: Security Officer and Programmanager.

I've written an strategic information security plan to align the goals, ambitions of the city council and

managementboard, national laws (like BIG) and trends from an security perspective. A program with a

total of six projects was set up to implement the security approaches and countermeasures after a risk

analyses. To coordinate the program management, i became a security officer in the newly formed

manicipulity Goeree-Overflakkee. One key aspect was "knowing" about information security amongst

our employees to countermeasure the weakest aspect in formation security; a human who could be

desceived and give information (social engineering).

This project was done in cooperation with Centric. As a project leader from the Manicipulity, I was

responsible for the implementation of a new server-infratructure in the new manicipulity Goeree-

Overflakkee (360 users). The new infrastructure is based on virtualisation and Server Based Computing

The manicipulity Goedereede had the ambition to give her business and IT an impulse. The core of this
