JOIN US FOR CAMP SHABBAT
There are many ways to inspire young people to love
their Judaism — providing them with a fantastic school
experience, having Jewishly—involved parents, building
a close relationship with their rabbis and congregation.
There is nothing that has as much impact as spending
summers at Jewish camps. From Union for Reform
Judaism camps to local Jewish camp experiences,
spending the summer fully immersed in a Jewish world
again and again proves to be the turning point for young
people who really fall in love with their faith.
On Friday, March 16, we are honoring those experiences
by having our own Camp Shabbat at Temple Israel. We
are asking all children and teens who attend or who
are alumni of Jewish camps to join us at 6:30 p.m.
for a camp-style service and to share some of their
experiences through music and kavannot. Whether
you’re a veteran of Jewish camps, interested in
learning more about Jewish camps, or just want to
have a relaxed, unique Shabbat experience, please join
us! Several representatives of summer camps will be
present to answer questions and provide information.
Be sure to mark your calendar now and plan to join
us for our next big 125th anniversary event, the
“Honoring our Past” Shabbat service and celebration
on Friday evening, April 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the Gall
Family Sanctuary. At this special service we will take a
spiritual journey through 125 years of worship and music
traditions at Temple Israel.
We will explore the ever-evolving nature of worship
both at Temple Israel and within Reform Judaism. Our
liturgy will include excerpts from The New Ritual for
Temple Israel, the prayer book written in the late 1880s
by Temple Israel’s first Rabbi, Solomon H. Sonneschein;
the Union Prayer Book; Gates of Prayer; and our current
Nefesh Yisrael – The Soul of Israel prayer book created
and edited by Rabbi Emeritus Mark L. Shook.

HONORING OUR PAST SHABBAT
On this evening we will also pay tribute to
the founders of our congregation and their
descendents, our past presidents, and our
multi-generational families and
long-tenured members. How far back is
your family’s history at Temple Israel?
Are you a descendent of one of our
founding families? Are you a fourth or fifth
generation Temple Israel member, or even
longer? We want to hear from you!
If you or a member of your family is a
descendent of one of our founding families,
or if your family has been part of Temple
Israel for four or more generations, please

Rabbi Amy Feder
Dear Friends,
As of the writing of this article, just a week has gone
by since we were blessed to welcome a daughter into
our family. In recognition of this change in our lives, we
hope you’ll indulge us by allowing us to write to you in a
more personal style instead of composing articles in this
month’s Dateline.
We named our daughter Molly Eliora after two amazing
women in our lives who have passed on. Molly Mintz
was Rabbi Alper’s maternal grandmother, a kind, strong
woman who helped to raise him and who irrevocably
shaped his life for the good, inspiring him particularly
with her yiddishkeit and her love of the Jewish faith.
The “E” that begins our daughter’s middle name is after
Rabbi Feder’s great-grandmother, Esther Werner, who
was the matriarch of her family and who was known, in
particular, for never having a harsh word to say about
anyone.
We didn’t use the name Esther as a middle name
after Molly, as it sounded a bit too much like a
particular synthetic fabric. We were searching for
the perfect “E” name until the baby arrived. It had
been a gray, dreary day, but just moments before
Molly was born, the sun began to shine from the
sky in rays of light that stretched out like beacons
all over the city. We decided then that the perfect
name was Eliora, which means “God is my light.”
In these first few amazing (and exhausting) days
of having a new baby in the house, we have been
so overwhelmed by the love and support we have
received from you, our extended family at Temple
Israel. From your sweet messages to your offers of
everything from home-cooked meals to babysitters,
we feel so blessed to know that you are there for
us. A very special thanks goes out to the TI staff, from
the leadership team and Rabbi Shook to the support
staff — who have filled in beautifully in our absence,
allowing us to have these special first days at home.
Rabbi Michael Alper
worthNOTING
www.ti-stl.org / March 2012 / 5 page
The same goes for our lay leaders, who have stepped up
to lead meetings, classes, and even services when we
couldn’t be there. This is what a true community should
feel like, and we are so proud that you have the skills
and the desire to keep our wonderful organization going
strong. Though we all knew that hiring a rabbinic couple
would mean there would be times like this, when both
would be unavailable, it gives us both peace of mind
and confidence to know that the Temple is in such good
hands during our short absence.
There is so much to be admired and thankful for in the
TI community. In the past three years, as parents even
more so than rabbis, we have seen the way that our
son, Jonah, has been treated with such love by this
congregation, just as every child in our congregation is
cared for and supported. His teachers in the DECC have
taught him how to be a mensch. He has learned prayers
and blessings from attending services; he has built a
sense of community from spending his weekends on
the Bridge eating bagels and meeting friends. At age 3,
our son is already more Jewishly—involved and inspired
than we could have imagined, and it is because of the
people in this wonderful congregation. This community,
and the love and the warmth and the traditions that
define it, was not created by the rabbis. It was created
by you, the congregants, and we thank you for it. We
are so thrilled now to introduce our daughter to the
same kind of warm, Jewish world that has defined
Temple Israel for generations. What a blessing it is to
know that TI is here for us and our family. We hope you
feel the same way.
Fondly,
Your Rabbis

Dear Congregation Temple Israel,
Congratulations on your 125th anniversary of Congregation Temple Israel. The Greater Mount Carmel Church
Family says to you, “TODA RABA, WAPSAW, SHUKRAN GAZILIN, DANK, DANKE, MERCI BEAUCOUP, GRACIAS, and
THANK YOU!
We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to share in such a wonderful Interfaith Service on Friday,
January 13, 2012 at Temple Israel. It was our honor to participate and to provide music during the Worship Service.
Our youth participation in the spoken word gave them a first-hand experience in diverse culture. We were
appreciative of the recognition given to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
A very special time for us was the presentation to Mrs. Viola Nance for our Pastor, Rev. Earl Nance, Jr., the
Malachi Award and all of the wonderful gifts and kind words that accompanied the Award! As if the Award were not
enough, you gave us delicious food and beverage and provided time for personal fellowship. We say, “THANK YOU!”
in many ways.
The relationship of Congregation Temple Israel and Greater Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church through
the years has been good for both congregations. We want you to know that we love you and we appreciate the
connection. We cherish the memories.

JOIN OUR TI SOFTBALL TEAM
WANTED, a few good men and women, 18 years old or
older, to play softball for Congregation Temple Israel this
summer in the St. Louis Inter-Congregational Softball
League. Games are played every Sunday, from April 29
through August 11, (except for May 13 and May 27). The
league is competitively recreational. Over the years,
Temple Israel has developed a reputation for playing
a hard 7 and for making it deep into the play-offs, but
for some reason, the championship has always eluded
us. We need your help. If you are interested in playing
softball, and having lots of fun and camaraderie with
fellow congregants, please contact Jeremy Shook,
[email protected], for more information.
DEUTSCH EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER OF TEMPLE ISRAELLeslie Wolf, Director
I am sure that you all remember the horrendous ice
storm that we had here in January that wrought havoc
on the morning commute. I had a very small number of
teachers that were able to get to work on time. I also
happened to have had a prospective parent tour set up
for 9:30 a.m.
This tour was for a dad who had it in his mind that his
little boy was going to attend another highly regarded
area preschool. His wife, on the other hand, has friends
whose children attend DECC, and she wanted to send
her son here. The dad was adamant that his son attend
the other preschool. Reluctantly, he agreed to tour our
preschool to appease his wife.
Well, somehow he made it here on time. Due to the
terrible weather and road conditions, I had a skeleton
crew of teachers here and a very sporadic carpool in
progress. So I explained to the dad that I needed to deal
with the situation at hand, and asked him if he had time
to wait. He said he completely understood and would
just “hang out” until I was available.
We sprang into action. I combined teachers who did
not usually work together with kids that usually don’t
have them as teachers. I was doing carpool with a very
limited staff. All of our kids came in with smiles on their
faces and were greeted by teachers who may not have
had them in their own classrooms, but who knew them
by name and adored them. In the midst of this chaotic
morning, not a tear was shed!
8 page / March 2012 Congregation Temple Israel DATELINE
Finally, things settled down and I was able to get back
to my scheduled tour. Without another word from me,
this dad told me that he had made his decision and that
his son would be attending DECC! He said that what he
had witnessed was amazing. All the teachers knew all
the kids by name. He thought that the way our teachers
worked together in an adverse situation was remarkable.
He said that he experienced first-hand and “felt” what
his wife had been trying to tell him about DECC – that
there is a special feeling about the school that is hard
to describe. He could tell by what he witnessed that the
teachers at DECC truly love all the kids, not just the ones
in their own classrooms, and they truly love teaching.
He commented that knowing his son would be loved
and well taken care of is what a preschool should be all
about. He also remarked that the team we have created
here at DECC is truly awesome! I told him that this is just
the way we do school here at DECC.
This story illustrates why our school keeps growing.
We have welcomed four additional children to our school
since the beginning of January. Young, unaffiliated
families are coming through the DECC doors. Our next
step is to transition these DECC families into becoming
Temple Israel member families.
TEMPLE ISRAELEDUCATION CENTER

Rabbi Michael Alper
Walk into our religious school on any given Sunday
morning and you might see students dressed up in
costumes acting out Sedra (Torah portion) scenes,
students playing games to learn the different mitzvot
(commandments), and students searching through a
Tanach (Hebrew Bible) to find a particular passage.
We utilize a variety of methods to engage children in
creative Jewish learning. Laughter, excitement and
singing are a constant presence in our building. The
smiles on the students’ faces each week tell a story.
Our teachers and volunteers at Temple Israel strive
to make Jewish education come alive for each child.
A new collaborative effort between members of the
Youth Education Committee and the teaching staff of
Temple Israel is being developed to allow our children
to experience the story of Purim. Each class is helping
to create a slideshow that will be debuted by the entire
school in March.
In addition to our wonderful teachers and toranim,
(assistants) we have a dedicated group of more than
50 volunteers who have graciously donated their time
and talents to enrich our religious school. The next time
you’re in the school building, be sure to check out our
“Thank You RS Volunteer” bulletin board and thank
a volunteer. We invite you to join our volunteer core
and make a difference in your child/children’s Jewish
education.
This month’s teacher spotlight introduces you to Jodi
Leise’s Art class. Jodi is a spectacular teacher whose
creativity shines through in each project she creates
with our students.
ART CLASS
By Jodi Leise
I am privileged to be the art teacher at Temple Israel. I
get to see all of the students during the religious school
year and watch them create some amazing work. Before
I decide on an art project for each class, I consider what
that grade level is learning. The 1st grade studies Jewish
holidays, so we made Shabbat candlesticks with baby
food jars and colored sand. The students are able to
use these for Shabbat. By reusing and recycling, the
kids learn to consider the environment and the Jewish
value of shomrei adamah, taking care of the earth. The
4th grade studies Jewish immigrants, so I created a
project for them that involves recycling materials into an
assemblage, in the style of the immigrant artist Louise
Nevelson. She was a Jewish immigrant from Russia who
used found objects to make her art. The 4th grade made
their piece out of shoe boxes, wood scraps, old tapes,
toys, and other objects. The 2nd grade explores stories
of the Torah. The students made their own books of
Biblical sites, which are now on display in the glass case
in the hall.
Feel free to stop by and check out the art room to learn
about other projects we have completed. We have many
more educational art projects to look forward to this
year. I am always looking for wood scraps, beads, or
unused art supplies for our school projects. If you have
any items you would like to donate, please let me know.

ENGAGING OUR YOUTH REMEMBER WHAT UNITES US
Editor’s Note: This letter by our TIFTY Youth Group President
Andy Cohen appeared in the January 31 issue of the St. Louis
Post-Dispatch.
On Saturday, St. Louis made history as the first city
to hold a welcome-home parade for the troops at the
conclusion of the Iraq war.
On Saturday, America stopped to think, stopped to
appreciate, stopped to love. We put aside our regular
lives, made the financial and time commitment to unite
in downtown St. Louis and gathered as one people. We
stopped to show our appreciation for the sacrifice that
many made over the years of the Iraq war. We stopped
for the Gold Star mother riding on the back of a
pickup truck who was holding back tears while holding
a picture of her loved one. We stopped for the boy
who never will know what it is like to have a catch with
Dad. We stopped for the daughter who never will have
a mother’s influence growing up. We stopped for the
spouse who now is a widow. We also stopped for the
men and women who did make it home.
By stopping to do this, we also learned about ourselves.
We were able to look at our own lives, realign our own
values and determine what really is important.
On Saturday, America was united; black and white, old
and young, man and woman, Democrat and Republican,
homosexuals and straight people. Differences didn’t
matter because we realized petty differences have
little importance compared to the celebration of life on
Market Street Saturday.
Remember this feeling, people. This feeling keeps us
grounded as individuals. This feeling is the strongest
reminder that we all are people, we all share the same
struggles and we all can lean on each other for support.

grandmother in 1852. They have since been lovingly
handed down l’dor v’dor, from generation to generation.
As a little girl in Germany, Lilo fondly remembers
the rooms being displayed each year from Chanukah
through New Year’s Day, and then dismantled and
stored away for the remainder of the year to keep
them “new to the children.” When Lilo’s family fled
Nazi Germany in 1936, her mother left the dollhouse
rooms with a Gentile friend for safekeeping. The rooms
would remain safely hidden in the attic of this Righteous
Gentile for the next 10 years.
One of Lilo Waxman’s dollhouse rooms.
Miraculously, the dollhouse rooms made their way back
to Lilo’s family in 1946, when a cousin who was stationed
in Frankfurt, Germany recovered the rooms and had
them shipped to Lilo’s home in St. Louis. These “Hidden
Treasures,” as Lilo calls them, arrived still wrapped in
the German newspapers that were used to safeguard
them in 1936. They have been in Lilo’s possession ever
since. This fall, Lilo decided that it was time to give the
dollhouse rooms a permanent home. She donated them
to the Holocaust & Intolerance Museum of New Mexico in
Albuquerque. She chose the museum in New Mexico as
this is where her family first settled in the United States.
Her hope is that the rooms will continue to be viewed
and enjoyed by future generations.

Editor’s Note: Lilo Waxman, 91, has been a member of Temple
Israel since 1948. She recently shared her unique story of
her family’s “Hidden Treasure,” a dollhouse that managed to
survive the Holocaust, and its special role with our Sisterhood.

our Sisterhood and
Brotherhood Silver
Fountain Campaign to
benefit the Building Fund?
The four-year campaign
in the 1960s featured
a variety of fundraising
projects ranging from bake sales to art exhibitions and
culminated with a luncheon for 200 guests at the Chase
Park Plaza Hotel. The campaign reportedly raised about
$65,000.
Congregant Lilo Waxman remembers those Silver
Fountain projects well. She was a Sisterhood vice
president at the time and was responsible for one of
those Silver Fountain projects, an annual exhibition of
her family’s dollhouse rooms.
During the “winter season,” from Chanukah through
early January, Lilo hosted “tours” of these four fully-
furnished dollhouse rooms in her home. Admission
was $1 per family. She still has her handwritten ledger
listing the religious school families and congregants who
viewed the exhibit in 1965 and 1966. A fifth room was
added to the house in 1964 by Temple Israel member
Tibor Weiss. He built this additional room in recognition
of Lilo’s daughter, Lora, becoming the fifth generation of
the family to enjoy the dollhouse.

CONDOLENCES
We extend our deepest sympathy to the families of
WHAT’S NEW AT NEW MT. SINAI?
On one of the front gates of New Mt. Sinai Cemetery,
the Hebrew words Beit Chayim (A Home of Life) appear.
At first glance, this might seem a bit incongruous for a
cemetery. But upon further thought, it is a wonderful
description for this beautiful green space located in the
heart of St. Louis. New Mt. Sinai is abundant with living
things – trees, plants, grass, insects. We even have foxes
and other animals that roam our 52-plus acres of rolling
hills.
Spring is a great time of year to come to New Mt. Sinai
and see the “Circle of Life” in full bloom. The cemetery
is about to burst with the spring colors of azalea bushes,
perennials, and forsythia bushes, creating a feast for the
eyes! Drive around the more than 1.5 miles of road out
here and see the true beauty of St. Louis’ oldest, largest
and most beautiful Jewish cemetery. You will discover
why New Mt. Sinai is also the only Jewish cemetery in
this area to be listed on the National Register of Historic
Places.
The other front gate has the words Beit Olam
(A Universal Home) inscribed upon it. New Mt. Sinai
permits burials of non-Jewish spouses and even
cremated remains, so we are indeed a “home for all.”
I hope you will come by and visit the cemetery soon,
and that you will remember New Mt. Sinai when you
make your end-of-life arrangements.
The New Mt. Sinai Cemetery Association will hold its
Annual Meeting on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at 3:30 p.m.,
preceding the regular Board Meeting of the association.
The meeting will be held at B’nai El Congregation, and
any clergy or member of the owner congregations
(B’nai El, Shaare Emeth, and Temple Israel) may attend
the Annual Meeting. Questions or concerns may be
directed to the Board during the Annual Meeting.
