Vijayadhasami - A CELEBRATION OF VICTORY Shabnam Panot, I Year, Masters in Journalism & Mass Communication D usshera also known as Vijayadashmi is one of the main festivals of Hindus. The zest and fervour of its celebration can be seen in entire India. Each festival that is celebrated in India has its own importance, Dussehra is also one of them. This festival is celebrated in every nook and corner of India with full zeal and enthusiasm. Dusshehra 2012 Vijayadashmi is celebrated on the tenth day of Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month. In 2012, this festival will be celebrated on 24th October,Wednesday. Dussehra is a celebration of victory of good over evil. Evil and immorality comes to an end establishing morality and peace. It is a form of Shri Ram’s glory. On this day, everyone gets immersed in the devotion of Lord Rama. To celebrate Vijayadashmi, Ramlila is staged in every corner of India. Kshatriyas worship their weapons and sight of Neelkantha is considered to be very auspicious. Dusshera is celebrated on the 10th day of the Navratra. Ritual to perform Dusshera Pooja Ravana is worshipped in the morning of Dussehra and everyone performs the ritual before eating anything. All the members of the family should take bath early in the morning, wear clean clothes and get ready to sit for Pooja. Then, prepare 10 balls i.e Kanda from the cow’s dung and apply curd on each of them. Barley is grown on the first day of Navratra. This plant is then kept on the Kand and then the God is worshipped with Dhoop, Diya, Rice and Roli. At some places there is a ritual to keep barley on the ear of son in a family and are offered to Lord Rama. The 10th Kand of cow’s dung is considered to be the symbol of 10 heads of Ravan and these Kands are offered as bhog or food. Vijaydashami Muhurta After worshipping Ravana in the morning, his mannequin is burnt into ashes in the evening on the rise of the “Vijaya” star. The burning of his mannequin takes place before sunset because according to Hindu culture cremation is not performed after sunset. Dussehra Holiday It is a gazetted holiday and all the schools, colleges and offices are closed on this day. At some places, schools announce holidays 10 days before Dusshera and school children enjoy festival with full enthusiasm without any worries. Dussehra story On this day, lord Rama killed Ravana. According to mythology, Sitaji was kidnapped by Ravana during her exile with lord Rama. Lord Rama fought with Ravana with the help of his brother Lakshaman and Hanumanji and brought Sita back. During the nine days of the war, Lord Rama worshipped goddess Durga and killed Ravana on the tenth day i.e Dashami. This is the reason that Vijayadashmi is one of the most significant day in Hindu mythology. On this day, Ravan is burnt along with his brother Kumbhakaran and son Meghnad in the form of a mannequin. Ramlila The 'Ramlila' is held during the nine days preceding Dussehra. It is an enactment of life of Lord Rama and Sita. Fairs are organised around the country to celebrate this festival and on the day of the Dussehra. Ravana is cremated along with his son Meghnad and brother Kumbhkaran. Dussehra Puja Many traditions and versions are completed in the festival of Dussehra. Many customs are practised in this festival and some important religious works like Krishi Mahautsava, Shastra Mahautsava, Shani Pujan, Aparajita Pujan and Shastra Pujan are performed. Dussehra has its own cultural significance. In India, farmers bring home the grown crops in a form of wealth and worship the grains on this auspicious occasion. This festival is celebrated in various different forms throughout the country. In Maharashtra this festival is also known as Sima Ullanghan. People cross the border of their territory on this day in the evening dressed up in new clothes and get the leaves of the “Shammi tree”. Lord Shiva told her that in the evening of Ashwin Shukla’s tenth day a star rises in the sky during which a phase comes knows as “ Vijya Kaal” and this phase is auspicious to get victory over enemies and all the wishes are fulfilled during this Kaal. If Shravan Nakshatra is formed on this day, then it becomes more auspicious. Lord Rama attacked Lanka during this phase and got victory over Ravana. Simollanghan It is a significant festival for Kshatriyas. They believe that when there is no war, the kings must exceed the limit of their kingdom on this day. Once King Yudhishthira asked Lord Krishna about the significance of this day on which Lord Krishna told him that on the day of Vijayadashmi all the kings should decorate their slaves, elephants and horses and celebrate the festival with full zeal and enthusiasm. The king along with his priest should depart towards the eastern side of his kingdom to exceed the limit of his kingdom’s boundaries and worship the Vastu Dev, Ashta-Digpal and Partha Deva. He should make a mannequin of his enemy and dig an arrow into his chest while chanting the Vedic Mantras, complete all the rituals and head back to his kingdom. Any king who performs these rituals will always gets victory over his enemies. Shami Puja Shami Pujan and Ashmantak tree should also be worshipped on Vijayadashmi. There is a story related to this Pujan, according to which Devi Parvati asks Lord Shiva about the significance of Shami Tree on which lord Shiva says that Arjun hid his weapons in the hole of a Shami Tree during his time of exile and started living as a Vrihanna in the kingdom of King Virat. Later on with the help of king’s Son, Arjun collected his weapons from the tree and got victory over his enemies. This way Shami tree protected Arjun’s weapons. Other than this, when Lord Rama was marching towards the Lanka, Shami tree told him that he will get victory. This is the reason that Shami tree is worshipped on the day of Vijayadashmi. If one is unable to find Shami tree, then Ashmantak tree can also be worshipped. People exchange the leaves of the Shami tree among friends and relatives as gold. Aparijita and Vishnu Kranta plant is also worshipped on this day. This plant brings victory and is dear to lord Vishnu. Along with paying for victory people also pray for joy and prosperity. Shastra Puja By worshipping the weapons on this day people call for the power of god. They clean their weapons that are used in daily lives, arrange them in a row and worship them. This is an important festival of Kshatriya and they worship Devi Aparajita on this day. People achieve happiness in all spheres of life by worshipping on this day. Dusshera also known as Vijayadashmi is one of the main festivals of Hindus. The zest and fervour of

its celebration can be seen in entire India. Each festival that is celebrated in India has its own importance, Dussehra is also one of them. This festival is celebrated in every nook and corner of India with full zeal and enthusiasm.

Dusshehra 2012Vijayadashmi is celebrated on the tenth day of Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month. In 2012, this festival will be celebrated on 24th October,Wednesday. Dussehra is a celebration of victory of good over evil. Evil and immorality comes to an end establishing morality and peace. It is a form of Shri Ram’s glory. the stupendous task of putting in place measures to mitigate the monsoon woes. The Corporation officials were on their toes in flushing out the flood water in many areas, while TANGEDCO personnel were on their toes to restore power lines snapped by uprooting of trees and falling branches.

Police were struggling to regulate traffic, after traffic paralysed in Singanallur, Ramanathapuram, Avanashi road flyover, GP theatre signal and Sivananda colony.

As a matter of precaution, the district administration has put the revenue, police, highways, fire and rescue services in a state of readiness to handle any contingency. Water level on roads started receding late in the night though mild showers continued.

COIMBATORE: Tehelka organized a panel discussion of two eminent activists Rahul Bose and Satinath Sarangi. It was held in Park College Coimbatore. There were students from different colleges across Coimbatore and their numbers were more than two hundred.

A disaster at Kudankulam Nuclear Power plant will be more destructive than the Bhopal gas tragedy of 1984, said Sathinath Sarangi, one of the members of the movement seeking justice for victims of the Bhopal gas tragedy.

Talking about the impact it created on the population, 'till now the remaining waste of the chemical has been buried in the ground which has polluted the ground water and the soil'. Throughout 28 years the people of Bhopal are still facing the side effects of those chemicals and the government has completely neglected the needs of thousands of people. Birth defects, cancers and disease affecting the liver and the kidney are common in Bhopal,and to avoid similar situations the Kudankulam plant must be stopped, Mr.Sarangi said.

In areas surrounding the nuclear power plant, radiation leaks are common but the government has not yet conducted a study on the health issues caused by power plants. Getting even basic information on the number of people affected by

COIMBATORE: A downpour that lashed the city for over four hours led to flash floods on roads and inundation of residential colonies. A woman who was seen wading through the flood water under the railway underpass near karunanidhinagar, at sivanandha colony was feared washed away after she fell into the drain through one of the slabs that remains open.Tamilnadu fire and rescue services personnel carried on search and rescue operations for over three hours braving the continuing downpour.

The downpour resulted in flooding of Sanganur canal and the surplus water got into many of the residential colonies on either side of the canal right from Thadagam road to Trichy road in the city. Flooding of roads were reported from Ganapathy, Lakshmi mills junction, Women’s Polytechnic junction, Singanallur junction, Ramnathapuram junction lengthy stretches of Avanashi road flyover underpass, Kikkani underpass, north Coimbatore flyover underpass and Nanjundapuram road. Flood water mixed with sewage was overflowing in many places and residence of nanjundapuram road had to wade through water leaving their vehicles.

The heavy rainfall, considered the first spell of the north east monsoon, that hit the city witnessed on October 9 has clearly exposed the infrastructure inadequacies and lack of maintenance of storm water drains, open drains and waterways.
