HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT IDENTIFYING THISPROBLEM?

Solid waste had accumulated on residential propertiesin Njube, Old Lobengula and Lobengula Extension(Ward 12) resulting in an unsightly and dirtyneighbourhood.

The Clean Up Ward 12 Campaign was done inSeptember and October 2011 was conducted after therealisation by the Ward Councillor that some of thesolid waste that had accumulated on the residentialproperties could not be removed by the ordinary refusecompactor trucks as these vehicles were only designed

to remove domestic waste like kitchen waste, plastics, beverages cans etc.

Other waste such as old householdfurniture, appliances, e.g. refrigeratorsdisused bulk containers, scrap metalwould require the property owners to

provide their own means of transport totake these items to the sanitary landfill.Ward 12 residents are mostly lowincome earners or pensioners and child

headed household who cannot affordtransport to take them to the landfill

Some of the household waste contain chemicals thatcould leak into environment causing climate change. The extraneous material were therefore kept piled onthe yards corners, on the roof tops or in the houseswhere they created conducive breeding ground forvermin (pests, rats, mice, cockroaches) which could

spread diseases like plague, typhoid or otherinfectious diseases. The other hazard was that of fireoutbreak from the heaped furniture. The propertieswere also so congested such that in the event of anemergency like a fire outbreak it would be difficult for

the rescue teams to access the victims to effectrescue. For aesthetic reasons it was high time thatall the junk was removed from suburbs of Ward 12.

WHO IS THE KEY TARGET? WHO IS INVOLVED? AREWOMEN AND MEN EQUALLY INVOLVED?

Targeted were only Ward 12 residents i.e. of Njube,Old Lobengula and Lobengula Extension Residentscooperated with their Councillor and municipal staff.Women, men, boys and girls all participated in theexercise. Residents also realised that some of thematerials that had been deposited at the temporarydumping sites could be collected for recycling. Assuch some youths, men and women collected all therecyclable materials such as scrap and sold them to

scrap material dealers. The exercise turned out tobe an income generating project for some.

    LESSONS LEARNED

Everyone who was involved in the campaign learntsomething e.g. residents learnt about theimportance of maintaining clean homes for theirhealth, safety and preventing climate change.Leaders learnt about the value of communication

and cooperation to achieve a common goal.Residents are no longer dumping waste into stormwater drains thereby eliminating the problem offlooding of properties during the rain season. The properties have a higher market value and areattractive to passerby when the environment isclean. Recycling and reuse of waste material wasanother valuable lesson.
