The Deacon Board of Cote Brilliante Presbyterian Church is grateful to everyone who contributed to the annual Holiday Gift Card program. Through your generosity, we were able to help 119 families with a $40 gift card to Schnucks. The cards were coded to exclude alcohol and tobacco products, and a message was printed on each cardholder wishing blessings from Cote Brilliante Presbyterian Church.

On both Monday and Tuesday, November 19th and 20th, we served excellent chili at Gillespie Village and at Cote Brilliante, while we distrib-uted the gift cards to our neighbors.

A PERSONAL NOTE FROM THE PASTOR

Greetings, Cote Brilliante Family,

Included in the most recent newsletter of the Giddings-Lovejoy Presbytery is an editorial by our Presbytery Leader, Reverend Dr Craig Howard, on Sacred Space. Reverend Howard writes about the work of Administrative Commis-sions to dissolve church ministries, disperse congregations and sell the property. This is happening all across the United States. No denomination is exempt.

Sadly, it is often reported that these churches, their ministries and congregations ceased to be effective

and relevant to the communities in which they served and once thrived.

These were churches where new members were welcomed, where Baptisms took place, where Holy Communion was served, where marriages were consecrated, and where lives were celebrated. These were sacred spaces.

The church is where the Word of God is both taught and preached, and where the Spirit of God is experienced and empowers. The church is where the message of God’s love, God’s forgiveness, God’s redemption and salvation inspires

and encourages us all to live God’s Word and to make a difference in the world around us, as Disciples of Christ.

So, what happens when there is one less church, one less congre-gation, one less sacred space to serve a neighborhood and community? Or, perhaps a better question is, “How can a church maintain its effectiveness and relevancy to the neighborhood and community in which it was established to serve?”

One suggestion from Rev Howard is to assure that the church is useful to the community as a resource center as well as a sacred

worship space. As a resource center, the church can serve as a source for food and clothing, and assist families with means to help support their households, which sounds a lot like Cote Brilliante.

Churches are also serving as places for continuing adult educa-tion programs, community meetings, youth programs and community col-laborations with other non-profits.

As a community-minded con-gregation, Cote Brilliante is moving in the right direction with the Com-munity Gardens, supporting the homeless, and a continuing effort to live up to Matthew 25:35-40.

As we enter the Christmas season and prepare for the New Year, we are reminded that the sa-cred space known as the church, the Body of Christ, is sacred because it is where God is reverenced, wor-shipped, praised and served. And in serving Him we serve those in need around us, showing God’s love and that we care by sharing the resources God has place under our steward-ship, which makes the church effec-tive and relevant, and brings joy to the world of our neighborhood and community. As good stewards over what God has given us thus far, I am sure He will entrust Cote Brilliante

with much more in the New Year, which means more opportunities to serve.

Let us prepare our hearts and minds, our time, talents and resourc-es for a more impactful 2019, filled with blessings for Cote Brilliante, a sacred space!

Cote Brilliante Celebrates 62nd Anniversary

The 62nd Anniversary Committee extend a sincere thank you to every-one for making our 62nd Anniversary celebration a tremendous success. Without you, it would not have been possible.

Cote Brilliante was in rare form on September 9th as we celebrated Friends and Family Day. We were blessed to have a wonderful service with excellent music, and the Boosters prepared a delicious meal that every-one enjoyed. Many members invited their friends and family to worship with us, and both Elmira Batchelor and Phyllis Harrell won prizes for having the most guests.

COTE BRILLIANTE ACTIVITIES

The 62nd Anniversary morning worship service was held on Septem-ber 16th. Our guest speaker was Reverend A Veronica Hawkins, Designated Associate Presbytery Leader of the Giddings-Lovejoy Presbytery, and music was provided by our Gospel and Chancel Choirs.

After the morning worship service, Michael’s Catering provided a delicious meal for everyone.

The afternoon’s Anniversary musical concert featured the Cote Brilliante Chancel Choir, Gospel Choir and Men’s Community Chorus. We also enjoyed guest performers Jennifer and Kyle Kelly, the Harris

Stowe State University Gospel Choir with director Virgil Person and Inter-nationally renowned concert pianist Dr Stan Ford.

We are sencerely grateful to all our guests, to the members of our community, to the entire Cote Bril-liante Presbyterian Church family and to Pastor Clyde R Crumpton for your participation, attendance and support of our 62nd Anniversary celebration.

The Cote Brilliante Community Garden and Park: An Odyssey

What took over a year to plan took only two days to install. That is what happens when we sit at the table with community partners and provide input into decisions that impact our community. The result — a beautiful, accessible, raised bed garden and park, with benches and umbrella tables to accommodate small neighborhood gatherings for fellowship.

The dedication of the Cote Brilliante Community Garden and Park was scheduled to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Fair Housing Act, according to the St. Louis Realtors, a partner and funder of our community garden project, along with partner Rebuilding Together St. Louis.

St. Louis Realtors was very strategic about the community in which they wanted to invest. The Shelley House (of the landmark United States Supreme Court case Shelley vs Kraemer, still standing at 4600 Labadie Avenue) was originally selected for investment because of its historic significance. The current homeowners, however, were not interested, so at the recommendation of Jessica Klostermann of Rebuilding Together, St. Louis Realtors chose to partner with CBPC — still a Labadie

Avenue location. The first community garden was an influential attraction.

The CBPC Community Garden and Park Ministry, led by Arlene Martin and Karen Graham, was encouraged to submit a Community Project Application to Rebuilding Together, along with our “wish list” for the vacant lot at 4668 Labadie. Our application was accepted and St. Louis Realtors agreed to fund the project through their non-profit foundation.

Rebuilding Together invited Architect and Planner Kuleya Bruce to create a design for the garden space. We were elated to learn that Kuleya not only grew up in Cote Brilliante, but is the granddaughter of Vashti Ransom, an early supporter of the community garden.

At this point we began to realize and bear witness to God’s hand in our garden project.

Proposed plans and designs were presented to, and accepted by the Session, giving support for the new garden space. A Memorandum of Understanding between Cote Bril-liante and Rebuilding St. Louis was signed and the project was underway. Although city property inspectors rejected the initial proposed design, Kuleya created a new design that won the city’s approval.

The Cote Brilliante Community Garden and Park installation took place on September 12th and 13th. The staff of Rebuilding Together provided the tools and equipment; St. Louis Realtors, CBPC members and our neighbors provided the labor.

Over 50 realtors volunteered on Sep-tember 12th, and about 20 realtors added finishing touches on the 13th.

The Rebuilding Together staff was in attendance both days, and the collaboration was extraordinary.

The Dedication and Ribbon Cutting for the Community Garden and Park was held on October 26th. Elected officials were invited to attend, and despite the cold, rainy, dreary day in this election year, they

were there: US Congressman Lacy Clay, State Senator Jamilah Nasheed, 6th Ward Alderman Samuel Moore, and 4th Ward Committeewoman Dwinderlin Evans were in attendance.

Also in attendance were Mis-souri Realtors President Nate Johnson; St. Louis Realtors President Marc Levinson and Director of Communi-cations Dawn Seabaugh; and Cheryl Reale, Jessica Klostermann, and Dave Ervin of Rebuilding Together. Continued on page 6, Community Garden and Park



When Hickey Elementary School held an Open House on August 21st, Hickey tutors Jean Crumpton and Vanessa Lucas, and Evangelism Committee members Rosalynde Scott, Ann Rice and Arlene Martin were there with Reverend Crumpton to invite parents and students to worship with us at Cote Brilliante.

The most important invited guests in attendance, however, were the residents of Gillespie Village, our Labadie neighbors and members of Cote Brilliante. What a memorable day — to God be the Glory!

The Community Garden and Park Ministry of Cote Brilliante extend a heart-felt thank you to all who supported, volunteered, and participated in this year-long process.

We invite you to imagine ways we can use this sacred space for our community-related church activities. We also invite you to enjoy this space to garden, to relax, and to meditate ... during warmer weather, of course!

Cote Brilliante Visits Hickey Elementary School

The parents and students who stopped by the Cote Brilliante table received a variety of goodies as well as a Cote Brilliante brochure.

On September 4th, Rickey Whittington, along with members of his non-profit, The Rickey Whittington Foun-dation, arrived at Hickey with bright new shirts-and-slacks uniforms for the students. Through their relationship with Cote Brilliante and with Reverend Crumpton, this foundation has donated uniforms and toys at Christmas at Hickey Elementary for the past four years.

The students, Reverend and Jean Crumpton, Vanessa Lucas, Arlene Martin, Geraldine Crumpton, Karen Graham and Rosalynde Scott all thanked Mr Whittington for such a generous gift and for his foundation’s continuous support of the students.— Submitted by Rosalynde Scott

William G Gillespie Tenth Annual “Taste of Jazz” Scholarship Benefit Concert

The William G Gillespie Scholarship Committee of Cote Brilliante held our Tenth Annual “Taste of Jazz” Scholar-ship Benefit Concert on October 20th at the Kappa Community Center in St Louis.

The concert featured native St Louis vocalist Amber Rose, with Nick Chandler on keyboard, Jeffrey “Booman” Burks on drums and Micheal Rainer on bass guitar.

The Honorary Chairpersons for the benefit were Mary Hayden and Richard Massey. Aaron Craig served as Master of Ceremonies.

We give thanks to our Silver Sponsor: Grice Group Architects; to our Bronze Sponsers: Commerce Bank of Mound City, Granberry Mor-tuary and Hezekiah Smith Lawn Ser-vice; and to our Friends: In Memory of Joseph Greer, American Automotive

It was an afternoon featuring outstanding musical performances for listening and dancing, attendance prizes, fun and fellowship. We also enjoyed delicious appetizers catered by Michael Thomas.

The Cote Brilliante Music Ministry in Concert

In keeping with the Music Ministry tradition, the CBPC Community Men’s Chorus held its 9th Annual Concert on Sunday, October 28th, and the Chancel Choir held its pre-Thanksgiving concert on Sunday, November 18th.

The Community Men’s Chorus and their guest vocalists provided a spirit-filled afternoon of music. The Chancel Choir concert was enhanced with the musical contributions of guest soloists Karen Hylton and

Nina Brown of the Legend Singers, and guest bassist Thomas Moore.

The music ministry is sincerely appreciative of the continued support of very dedicated members, friends and guests, and we look forward to our 2019 concerts.

J.O.Y. Ministry Hosts October Treat Fest

In other news, the Media Ministry held a Zumba Party on November 10th. It was a blast, and the next party is scheduled for December 29th. See you there!

On Saturday October 21, the Cote Brilliante J.O.Y. Club ministry held its annual October Treat Fest (formerly Trunk or Treat). It was a very festive event with a variety of attendees, such as Ninja warriors, cute little scarecrows, princesses, ducks and a visitor from Bedrock, who was rumored to be a friend of the Flintstones.

The participants were showered with sweet treats, books and floats. The table decorations were Halloween themed, and it was fun for all with music, dancing, food and activities.

National Night Out in St Louis

CBPC Bell Choir

The Cote Brilliante Presbyterian Church Handbell Choir joined with Central Baptist Church and Peace Lutheran Church to present a concert honoring grandparents on September 9th.

Accompanied by Dwayne Buggs, Chester Rice performed The Lord’s Prayer as the opening handbell selection. The entire company of ringers performed two additional selections.

Atira Merriweather and Amori Sewell explained the history of handbells, and the program culminated with combined handbell choir selections. All of the choirs performed exquisitely, both individually and collectively. — Submitted by Ann Rice, Director, Handbell Choirs

Congratulations to Kim and Dr Ivory Johnson on the birth of another granddaughter, Ivory Elaine Crawford.

The younger Ivory was born September 3rd to proud parents Jaimie and Catherine Johnson Crawford, who live in San Antonio, Texas with their three beautiful girls.

Sarah Tillard, a resident of the 4400 block of San Francisco since 1964, was honored as the oldest resident of the block as St Louis celebrated National Night Out on October 2nd.

Mrs Tillard, who is 103 years old, was honored with Proclamations from both Mayor Lydia Krewson, and from the St Louis Board of Aldermen. John Collins-Muhammad, Alderman of the 21st Ward, was on hand to present both Proclamations to Mrs Tillard.

She was blessed and honored to have all her children present to witness this great occasion. The 4400 block of San Francisco will soon be renamed Sarah Tillard Avenue.

Peola Lucas Gives Homecoming Address at Rock Chapel AME Church

Peola Lucas was the guest speaker at the Rock Chapel AME Church on Sunday, November 11th for their Coming Home for the Harvest celebration.

Danny Campbell has volunteered to hold chess classes for youth and adults beginning in January 2019. Dates and times to be announced.

On November 9th, Captain Christopher Newman, former Tuskegee Airman, was honored by the Circuit Attorney’s Office for Veteran’s Day.

Kim Banks-Taylor introduced him to the galley of observers, and Christopher Newman: Tuskegee Airman—a brief documentary found on youtube.com—was shared with the audience. During a question-and-answer period, Captain Newman mesmerized the crowd with his warm, charismatic personality as he recalled his life and how he knew at a very early age that he wanted to be a pilot.

After engaging with the audience, Captain Newman was presented an Aldermanic resolution from the City of St Louis. He later posed for photographs and signed autographs.

It was a blessing to experience this moment in the life of a great Tuskegee Airman, and to hear first-hand a bit of his story.

The Cote Brilliante Community Men’s Chorus and several Cote Brilliante members attended the service and were inspired by the message.

Two important take-aways from her message were Life without joy is no life at all and that we all need to be KISSed (Kept in Spiritual Strength). It was a blessing to experience the debut oration of our dear sister Peola Lucas.

We are convinced there is more to come.

Captain Christopher Newman honored on Veteran’s Day

The great Lynne Fiddmont, daughter of Alverne Hood, brought in the spirit with The Power of Love concert. Her presentation at the Sheldon Concert Hall on Sunday, December 2nd, was a little jazzy, a little soulful, a little R&B and a little gospel.

The performance was also a family affair. Lynne’s brother, Keith Fiddmont, was tight on the tenor sax; her daughter, Alana Linsey, sang with soul and sass; and

her son, Courtney Linsey, brought the hip-hop.

It was a great way to bring in the holiday season. The entire evening was truly uplifting.

Each Sudoku has only one solution that can be reached logically. Enter a number 1 through 9 into each blank square so that each row, each column and each 3x3 block of squares contains each of the numbers 1 to 9.
