The IEEE IoT Ini$a$ve -‐ Objec$ves
• The Internet of Things: • Is one of the fastest growing technical areas • Touches almost all Ver$cals of the World Economy, • Is a major investment for industry, government, and academia • Has had a CAGR > 20% year over year in the commercial marketplace for the last four(4) years
• Within IEEE The purpose of the Ini$a$ve is to: • Crea$on of a cri$cal mass of offerings to impact on the future of IoT • Grow a porXolio of ac$vi$es
• Achieve recogni$on and impact • Provide for par$cipa$on across IEEE
• Encourage strong collabora$on and coopera$on between IEEE Socie$es • Encourage strong collabora$on across Ver$cal Providers and Horizontal Suppliers

A View of IoT
• “The Internet of Things” is a general term that consists of many underlying ideas. The ideas are made real in a mul$tude of forms, and that can bring value to a broad range of products, services, processes, and end use applica$ons.
• What these have in common is: – “Deep digi$za$on” – Use of an increasingly pervasive infrastructure – Connec$vity ranging from local to global – Long lived protocols and standards – Genera$on, gathering, and exploita$on of “data” – Exploita$on of compu$ng (analysis methods, algorithms, techniques) – Closing the “control loop” by design
