YMCA Camp Copneconic builds a new health center with the help of the HPS Design CenterFor nearly 100 years, the woodlands, streams and lakes of YMCA’s Camp Copneconic in Fenton, Michigan, have offered an outdoor adventure experience for children. Copneconic has expanded the camping experience over the years, partnering with local health organizations to serve children with chronic illnesses and special circumstances such as cancer.

The original health center was built in the 1960s, primarily for summer use when camper enrollment was lower. The facility was outdated and inadequate for campers with special medical needs. With the help of the HPS Design Center, the camp recently completed a new Health and Wellness Center to better serve its medical partners. “We’re three different camps at once – day camp, overnight camp, and partner camp at the same time,” said John Carlson, executive director. “That’s hundreds of children on camp at the same time. And with our growing partnerships, we clearly needed a new health facility.”

The new health center is a wonderful blend of high-tech medical facility with rustic lodge. Instead of clinical white, the interior design features wood and natural colors. “The architect established a rustic, outdoorsy theme using ceramic tile that looks like barn wood, faux wood grain panel wainscoting, ceiling tile with embossed animal

tracks, and wall sconces with bear, moose and pine trees,” said Laura Purdy, HPS designer. “Based on the theme, I used a variety of earthy paint colors throughout the building and fabrics with fun patterns like tree bark, owls, pebbles and leaves. The Copneconic team and I didn’t want it to look and feel like a hospital.”

The main floor of the facility houses an area to examine and treat campers and an area to treat children and young adults with chronic or serious health related issues. The partner side of the health center is a clinic, with a reception area, patient waiting area, exam rooms, isolation room, staff on-call rooms and a pharmacy. “All of the fabrics used are stain and moisture resistant, anti-microbial and anti-bacterial.

They are very functional and durable for maintenance and infection control. The beds and mattresses from Butler Woodcrafters were specified with bed bug prevention features, and are fluid proof, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal, making them easily cleanable and extremely durable,” Purdy explained.

The lower level of the center provides comfortable housing for volunteer medical staff. Family suites with two bedrooms and a bathroom, along with individual rooms, share a kitchenette and living room. “We want our medical partners to feel this is their home, too,” Carlson shared. “If Laura from HPS hadn’t coordinated the interior design for the project, the entire facility would be a boring shade of beige. Laura proposed a clear vision for the overall design, provided us with a variety of options so we were a part of the process, and then absolutely knocked it ‘out-of-the-park’ in pulling it all together.”
