What better way to show how much of a family we are here at Centura Chesapeake than to

make it a true “Family Affair”? Well, that is exactly what three of our Medical Assisting students did. Tykiera, Tyshaun and Angela Lassiter decided, as a family, to join our family and became students in May of this year. This is truly a testimonial to the unique character of our campus. The Lassiters bring fun and excitement to their classes while providing an unwavering support system to one another.

“As a mom, I can’t think of a better way to show my kids how important a quality education is than

to go back to school myself, and even better, have them go with me”, says Angela. Both Tykiera and Tyshaun said, “It’s a little weird at first to have your mom in class with you, but she has always been there for us and supported us, and this is just another way to show she loves us.”

Motivation, teamwork and support are cornerstone values at Chesapeake, and to see those same values in these three ladies makes the campus atmosphere feel like a family. We are excited to have such wonderful students and cannot wait to see them walk across that stage at graduation together. n

Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Program Comes to North Chesterfield

There’s no greater sensation than the feeling of cool or warm air when the temperature

becomes unbearable. HVAC personnel are needed to ensure that air conditioning and heating units will continue to work properly throughout the year. For that reason, the North Chesterfield campus added Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning to its list of academic programs in June. HVAC Program Coordinator Monty House came to the campus with over 20 years of HVAC knowledge and experience that he will share with his students as he teaches them the ins and outs of the industry. The HVAC program consists of 36

credits and will include 15 months of technical and hands-on instruction. The program will be housed in a new facility called the Trades Building, the winning entry in the contest to names the HVAC instruction area. The continued demand for HVAC personnel in the labor force will ensure that the new program is the start of something great for the North Chesterfield campus and provide an alternative to the health care-related programs for which the campus is known. Much like those other programs, the HVAC program will teach its students skills that they will be able to use in a rewarding career field. n

Centura College’s Virginia Beach Campus held a Mental Health Awareness Week

from May 16-20, 2016 for students, faculty, and staff to understand more about mental health and mental illnesses. On Monday, May 16th, the event was set into motion with over sixty students and staff wearing green ribbons and sharing them with family and friends within the community. On Tuesday, May 17th, the students, along with staff members, visited the Student Services office and received handouts, questionnaires, and brochures about mental health and various mental illnesses, including suicide. The theme of the day was “Pain isn’t always obvious.” On Thursday, May 19th, there was a mental health keynote speaker, Ms. Brooke Hemphill, Director of Business Development from The Virginia Beach Psychiatric Center, who spoke to the students and staff about suicide prevention and the role that Virginia Beach Psychiatric Center serves within the community. One interesting fact that many attendees learned that there is help available for a family member or loved one who shows signs of suicide.

The week concluded with many students and staff signing a pledge against bullying and

suicide prevention. Everyone was encouraged to wear a green ribbon throughout the weekend and express upon family, friends, and the community about taking a stand for mental health awareness. The campus’ mental health awareness week certainly provided more understanding

to everyone about good mental mealth and the signs and symptoms of suicide. The campus also provided an invaluable opportunity for informing the students and staff about ways to seek advice or help with serious mental health issues. n

Chesapeake Bachelor’s Program Students Meet Chesapeake Mayor

On May 11, 2016, a group of students from Centura Chesapeake’s new Bachelor of Science

in Business degree completion program attended the 2016 Employer Conference at the Chesapeake Marriott Hotel and Convention Center. They attended due to receiving a scholarship from Steven Wright, Director of Economic Development (City of Chesapeake). Accompanied by Patrick Mahan, Business Coordinator at Centura Chesapeake, the students were served meals and had the opportunity to attend sessions and classes covering topics like employment law and social media operation/laws.

“The conference was a great opportunity and the information received was valuable. I look forward to using it after graduation,” stated one student. While the conference was an overall success, the students

received a special surprise when they were greeted by Chesapeake Mayor, Dr. Alan P. Krasnoff. Mayor Krasnoff was elected Mayor in May of 2008 and served on City Council in May of 1990. With a Master’s Degree in Urban Education and Counseling, Mayor Krasnoff seeks to educate students of all ages and levels. Our students found him extremely entertaining and found inspiration in his story, which includes graduation from Queens College and the National College of Chiropractic Medicine. In addition to his duties as Mayor, Dr. Krasnoff is a self-employed chiropractor in the city.

As Centura College Chesapeake continues expand its degree programs, students will continue to receive and participate in opportunities such as the Employer Conference. n

Chesapeake Campus Celebrates Teacher Appreciation Week by Millie daVis, cche

At Centura College Chesapeake, we sincerely appreciate our amazing instructors for their high level of commitment and dedication to the success of our students! Teacher Appreciation Week was celebrated May 2 through May 5, and each day, our dedicated instructors were showered with tokens of our appreciation. Throughout the week, they were treated to donuts, bagels, and an assortment of tasty treats. On Monday, Shawnte’ Peterson, our Massage Therapy Coordinator, pushed around a cart loaded with art supplies and encouraged everyone to create cards of appreciation for our instructors. These cards were later delivered to the instructors and prominently displayed on their classroom doors. On Wednesday, everyone was treated to a scrumptious pancake breakfast, courtesy of Ashley West, our Campus Executive Director, and Millie Davis, our Director of Education. Lastly, since the week ended on Cinco de Mayo, we celebrated with a delicious lunch catered by Moe’s. Everyone had a great time as we showed our instructors just how much they are appreciated at Centura Chesapeake! n

With summer rapidly approaching, Centura Chesapeake hosted its first Teen Summer Job

Expo on March 29th. The event consisted of several different employers from the Hampton Roads area who were preparing to do their seasonal hiring. In attendance were Ocean Breeze, Wendy’s, Farm Fresh, and the YMCA. The employers appreciated the opportunity to get a jump start on their summer hiring and also enjoyed giving pointers to teens

who were just starting their job search. Leading up to the event, Community Outreach Representative Candace Hasni hosted an interview workshop for the teens where they practiced interviewing skills and received professional advice, since many of the employers conducted on-site interviews. Many of those who were in attendance were able to obtain a new position for the summer, making this event a huge success in the community. n

On June 13th Centura College Norfolk hosted its “Jump into your New Summer Career”, career fair. Our primary focus was to assist our current and prior graduates with networking skills, as well as finding a career in their chosen program. Some of our employers consisted of Riverside Health Systems, Bon Secours Health System, City of Virginia Beach Human Services and Mid Atlantic Dermatology. Our turn out was a huge success. n

Finding a summer job can be a rite of passage for many youngsters. With that idea in mind, the

North Chesterfield campus held its first-ever Teen job fair in June. After the tremendous success of the annual Job Fair that the campus hosted earlier this year, it was clear that there were positions in some employment sectors such as retail and the food service industry that still needed to be filled. For that reason, the campus decided that its next career event should be aimed at high school students. Career Services Coordinator Steven Terry and Community Outreach Representative James Braxton joined forces to provide an event that gave area teenagers face time with those employers, in the hopes that they would find gainful employment and begin building a strong work ethic that will last them a lifetime. The campus got the word out to various churches and public schools in North Chesterfield, Richmond and Petersburg, and it welcomed over 60 teenagers who were all eager to find employment. Companies such as Car Pool, Chick-fil-A, Cricket Wireless and Waffle House were on hand during the event. The turnout was fantastic, and the students who participated were dressed professionally. Before leaving, the teens also spun the campus prize wheel for a chance to win rewards including movie tickets and t-shirts. The North Chesterfield campus would like to send out a big thanks to the vendors that attended and took the time to interview those motivated young job seekers. n

Centura College Columbia started the month of May with a week of celebration and renewing contacts with our

alumni. The week included an appreciation for the faculty at Centura Columbia and led into special events on campus for our students including a “wear your favorite team jersey” to a professional dress day. Students and faculty enjoyed the opportunity to show off their favorite teams and participate in some lively discussions concerning team favorites. Snacks and beverages were served during uniform day and the Professional Dress day. An outside professional came to the campus and provided tips and feedback on “dressing for success.”

On Thursday morning of Homecoming Week our Spring Career Fair was held in conjunction with the Richland County Chamber of Commerce at a nearby Holiday Inn. The career fair was so busy early on that our photographer was put to work helping with registrations. Vendors paid for table reservations at the career fair with more than 20 joining in to the Career Fair activities. Thursday evening was our joint meet and greet for alumni and an opportunity for faculty recognition at the Holiday Inn. Finger food and light beverages were served and everyone enjoyed the fellowship during the evening.

On Friday topping off the week, a ribbon cutting was hosted by the Columbia Chamber of Commerce at our campus and attended by members of the community. We celebrated expanding our relationship with the community and working together to ensure the success of our students as they matriculate through our programs, becoming job ready and finding support in entering the work force. A light lunch was served along with campus tours. We received some great feedback from community members participating and pledges to work closely with us as we seek resources to assist our students. n

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!! Ice cream is always a great way to get people

together and have fun. Centura Norfolk had an ice cream social to beat the summer heat. There were push ups, bomb pops and cones; just some of the treats that bring back childhood memories. It was a great opportunity for students to take a break from class and enjoy the sweets. n

Virginia Beach Campus Holds Car and Bike Show, Donates Proceeds to Fisher House Foundation

Centura College’s Virginia Beach Campus hosted a Spring Fling Car and Bike Show

on May 14, 2016. The Business Department’s local chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America, Phi Beta Lambda (FBLA-PBL), presented a successful event that raised donations for The Fisher House Foundation, a local organization that supports military families. Over thirty participants, including our students and staff, along with their families and friends, attended the event. Everyone enjoyed many activities, including fun games, delicious food, and a showcase of the cars and bikes!

Everyone who attended the Car and Bike Show had an awesome time! Throughout the day, musical entertainment was provided by local radio station personalities and the live band, “No Dreads”. There were delicious refreshments, subs, chips, sodas, and cotton candy! Numerous participants played bean bag toss and cornhole tournaments, outdoor giant bowling and many other family games. The inflatable Magic Castle Bounce House attracted the attention of children from age 10-months to 16-years, and even a few young adults. There were also numerous vendors at the event—Cricket, Organic Owl Custom Jewelry, Tupperware, Scentsy, LaLaRoe Fashions, Thirty-One Gifts, and Initials, Inc.

The Admissions Department was available to ensure prospective students received campus tours and learn more about our college. The faculty, staff, and students worked well together to make the event fun, successful, and well-attended.

The car and bike enthusiasts who had registered their vehicles anxiously awaited the highlight of the day, the award presentations to the best vehicles! Trophies were given out to the winners: Logan Thompson (The Best Overall Car), Angie Bon (2nd Place Car Award) and Mae Cappis (3rd Place Car). Sherry Morgan was awarded (1st place Motorcycle) and Steven Morgan received the (2nd Place Motorcycle).

The Motor Madness Car and Bike Show certainly was a huge success, fostering lasting partnerships with local members and businesses of the community; and in turn also attracting new students to our academic programs. We already look forward to making plans for next year’s event. n
