TODAYS VISITORS - RUSTINGTON
Rustington FC was formed in 1903 and joined the Bognor District
League shortly afterwards. They became members of the Littlehampton
District League when football resumed after the Great War, winning
the title four times, in 1933, 1934, 1948, and 1949. The club’s
more recent history saw Rustington enter the West Sussex League,
when a re-organisation saw all the District Leagues in that part of
the county merge together under Vic Short, who was later to enjoy
success at near neighbours East Preston, Rustington won the West
Sussex League title in 1999/00. Rustington lifted the West Sussex
League title again in 2003/04 and were promoted to Division 3 of
the Sussex County League. Among the players in their
championship-winning side was the legendary Terry 'The Twister'
Withers - a member of Littlehampton's all-conquering 1990/91 team,
and subsequently a County League championship winner at Wick. The
club’s first season in the County League was something of a
revelation. An 8th place finish may not appear anything special,
but to a large extent this was due to a phenomenal record in cup
competitions that saw manager Gareth Davies side lift no fewer than
three trophies: the Division Three Challenge Cup (vs Lingfield);
the Vernon Wentworth Cup (vs Newhaven); and the very difficult to
win Sussex Intermediate Cup (vs Bosham). In addition there were an
impressive four Team of the Month awards picked up for Division
Three. 2005/06 saw the club improve its final League position:
finishing just outside the promotion places in 3rd. A repeat of the
previous season’s Division Challenge Cup Final saw Rustington beat
Lingfield again 12-11 on penalties, after the match finished 1-1
aet. Astonishingly, new fewer than 32 spot kicks were taken during
the shoot-out. Rustington side also retained the Vernon Wentworth
Cup by defeating League champions Peacehaven & Telscombe 1-0.
Not surprisingly Rustington began 2006/07 as long odds-on
favourites and duly obliged, finishing 11 points clear of
runners-up Pease Pottage Village. Rustington also made the
headlines and were featured on Sky Sports as a 2-0 victory against
lowly Bosham on 31 December 2006 saw them achieve a new record for
going an entire calendar year unbeaten. The record was to remain
until 24 February 2007, when it was ended by Haywards Heath.
Disappointment at losing at the semi-final stage in both the
Division Three League Challenge Cup and Sussex intermediate Cup was
tempered by a third successive victory in the Vernon Wentworth Cup:
defeating Horsham YMCA Reserves on penalties. Rustington have
played in the Sussex County League Division 2 since the 2007/2008
season finishing 4th in their first season then 3rd in their second
only being denied promotion to Division 1 on ground grading. They
also finished runners up in the Division 2 cup in 07/08 and in
08/09 finished runners up in the RUR Cup losing in extra time to
the newly crowned Division 1 champions Eastbourne United. The past
6 years has seen a number of managerial changes but the club has
remained stable and is now an established Division 2 club.

NOTES FROM THE COMMITTEE
A warm welcome to everybody involved with Rustington today, and to
the match officials, and more importantly welcome to our first home
game of the season here at the Shooting Field. The start of a new
season always brings new levels of freshness and optimism. It is
great to see so many of last years faces back at the club, and we
are also delighted to welcome on board some new faces, as well as
some returning familiar faces. To each and every one of you we wish
you well for the season, wear the shirt with pride, enjoy
yourselves & represent the club well. That is all we can ask of
you. The pre season has gone pretty well and the lads have put in a
great shift with good commitment. The results in pre season have
been a bit of a mix but one thing is clear. The competition for
places is high and there are lots of players very keen on being in
the starting 11 for the first team. Just the way it should be. Now
the competitive stuff underway we have started with a win v Seaford
and a cup loss v Oakwood. So plenty to work on but also a solid
platform to build from. There has been a significant amount of work
done on the pitch over the summer and for that we mainly have to
thanks Vic Gretton from Mackleys and Steve Dudman who have provided
and sourced materials for this and as a result we have had 70
tonnes of soil on the pitch and it has been vertidrained and
reseeded. We did have some problems after this was done with some
aspects of the work, however in the longer run the benefits will be
clear. We are hoping this will be part of an ongoing programme of
works. We are indebted to those who helped on this. Off the pitch
Carol Swain has stepped down as chair after 4 years at the helm,
but will continue as General Manager. Richard Woodbridge has taken
over as chairman. We also have a number of other critical committee
and non committee roles that have been filled. We also have put
together a football management committee to deal with aspects of
running the club from a purely football point of view. All of these
appointments further strengthen the club and give us more strength
in depth as a club. A special thanks to Ian Nicholls and Mikey
Abbott who have put in lots of work over the summer on sponsorship
and Mikey has again done a great job on pulling together another
great looking programme. The under 18 set up is going well. This
year we will have two under 18 sides. One in the County youth
league and one in the Arun & Chichester league. The set up, run
by Daniel Fuller - Smith is turning in to one of the best in the
County and is vital to the clubs future that we have a good stream
of well coached lads coming through. Overall lots to be excited
about this season. Lets hope it is a good one for everybody at the
club, to reward the hard work that everybody is putting in;
players, managers , coaches , committee members and volunteers . We
are all here hoping to see the club do well, so lets give a great
go this season. Good luck and enjoy today’s game THE
COMMITTEE

A WORD FROM THE MANAGER
Well, here we go again, another season is upon us! Pre season
training and games are all done with and now we get down to the
serious stuff! We have already played two games, in the League away
to Seaford and in the Peter Bentley Cup away to Oakwood. So this
game today is our first one at home since last April. There have
been considerable changes during the intervening months; Ryan
Andrews has left to become the Manager of Haywards Heath, taking
with him George McMahon, Rob Clark, Aaron Hinton, Tom Kilner-Brown
and Adam Woodlands; Richard Brannigan has also left to share his
time between Lewes Youth and Hurstpierpoint. Also, and the biggest
loss of all, is that of Alan Skipper, who did such an excellent job
as Reserve Team Manager last season and was all set to continue
until he had promotion at work, and a massively increased
work-load, which has meant that he cannot give the necessary time
to do the job to his own satisfaction; he has not actually left the
Club and will help out, as and when he can. Also gone is last
year’s captain Mohamed Shuga’a who has gone to Crawley Down
Gatwick, and Adam Burton who has gone to Saltdean where he has
already scored 4 goals in his first two games.
On the more positive side we have retained from last year’s 1st
team squad Ben Rose, Mikey Abbott, Ben Greer, Ash Finch, Ash Elms,
Matt Dodds, Callum Towse, Kris Harding, Dave Harris, Lee Early, Ash
Towler and Sean and Ollie Pickup. Also re-signed is Shaun Skipper
but he picked up a horrendous ankle injury whilst at work which
could keep him out of football until Christmas. The new players at
Club are as follows: Chad and Curt Milner, Ryan Warr, Lewis Levoi,
Joe Charman, Yoseph Assefi, Rob Hare, Tim Jones, Jack Boxall, Sam
Smith, Kerry Parsons and Phil Williamson (both returning) and
finally Sam Gritt. We all wish old and new players the very best of
luck, but especially Sam Gritt, who incidentally gets married
tomorrow, who broke his leg/ankle badly in a pre-season friendly at
the start of last year, and never played a game all season; all the
best Sam, both for tomorrow and the season ahead. Our pre-season
games were of mixed results: drawing 3-3 and 1-1 with
Hurstpierpoint, drawing 3-3 with Loxwood, losing 3-2 to Worthing
Utd, winning 10-3 and losing 5-1 at Hailsham, Winning 1-0 and 3-1
at Roffey and finally losing 6-1 to Worthing Under 21s at Woodside
Road. Finally, our pre-season training has been well attended and
everyone has worked extremely hard! And once the boys had seen the
fantastic views from the top of The Lower Horseshoe, it was almost
impossible to stop them going up at each session. In conclusion l
would like to welcome Rustington Football Club here this afternoon
and l personally look forward to catching up with old
friends.

BRAZIL 2014 - A FEW TALKING POINTS The 2014 World Cup Finals
Competition in Brazil was arguably the best World Cup of all time.
First European team to lift the Cup on South American soil. First
substitute to score a World Cup Final winner. Worst England
performance. First biting incident...... maybe not! Anyway...
Probably not since Italia 1990 (for those who remember) has there
been a tournament which has produced so many future talking points.
Obviously the competition was clouded by the poor performance of
England. Despite an all time low in expectation going into the
competition, the majority of the English footballing public
expected the '3 Lions' to progress beyond the Group stages. Could
Andy Carroll, Ashley Cole, John Terry have made a difference? Too
much inexperience? Maybe France 2016 or Russia 2018? Who knows? But
who would have expected predicted 'whipping boys' Costa Rica (or
Eureka!) to win the Group and then march on to being only a penalty
shoot-out away from reaching the Semis?! The World Cup always
produces a surprise team, and weren't they just!? As for the hosts,
the incredible Neymar Jnr was taken out of the competition in the
most unfortunate circumstances and there has probably never been a
team so deeply effected by the loss of just one player. The
dramatic Semi-final collapse of the Brazilians and 7-1 hammering at
the hands of Germany will be remembered as one of the most amazing
results in footballing history and talked about for many years to
come, and indeed there will also be plenty of 'jawing' about a
certain Mr Suarez's latest dental escapade (the dentists in
Barcelona must be rubbing their hands...!). Not far behind for
impact was Spain's 5-1 drubbing by Holland in the Group stage with
Van Persie's gravity defying header maybe the best headed goals of
all time. The new star of the competition though was most certainly
young James (pronounced 'Hames') Rodriguez. His six goals in five
matches for Columbia earned him the Brazil 2014 'Golden boot' and
this and a few nifty Salsa dances secured him a £73m transfer from
Monaco to Real Madrid (fourth highest transfer fee ever). The
'player of the competition' award though (not sarcastic)
surprisingly went to Lionel Messi. Without wishing to take anything
away from Messi, surely Neuer, Sweinsteiger or Lahm would have been
far worthier winners. Because, at the 'end of the day' the Germans
were worthy winners. Throughout, they were the most organised,
resolute and solid team in the mix. Basically, they never really
put a foot wrong and after their sublime Semi- final battering of
the hosts their eventual overall triumph was almost inevitable. The
clinching goal from Mario Goetze in the Final v Argentina was
probably as good as any World Cup winning goal ever and the fact
that this talented young man was only used as a substitute bears
testament to the sheer strength of this great German team. It was
good for 'football' that Germany, a European side, won in Brazil as
a Brazilian triumph may have been a little cliched and an Argentina
win would probably have started a War. Whatever you may think ,and
most of it is only opinion, Brazil 2014 was a truly magnificent
football competition and will be remembered for mainly the right
reasons. Did you enjoy it?

Seaford Town 0 Steyning Town 2 (SCFL Division 2) On a bright and
breezy afternoon over at The Crouch we got off to a sunny start' to
the new campaign with a well deserved 2-0 win. With the new
Management team of the '2 Johns', Suter and Dutton, in the dugout
the match started in typical 'first game of the season' style with
both teams sizing each other up and indeed sizing themselves up
with new recruits in the ranks on both sides. It was actually
Seaford who got the better of the opening exchanges and if it
hadn't been for Tom O'Donnell blazing over the bar on 7 minutes and
their centre-forward James Baurer squandering a close range header
a few minutes later, it would have been the hosts who had taken the
lead. However, as the first-half progressed we settled and gained
in confidence and on twice Sean Pickup came close to giving us the
lead with unlucky near misses. On 40 minutes though, the deadlock
was broken when Chad Milner floated home a precision free-kick from
the edge of the box to give us the lead. Barely 2 minutes later had
came within a whisker of doubling our lead when he got on the end
of a Ross from David Harris only to be foiled by a superb
point-blank save by Seaford keeper, Lee Aylward. Half-time -
Seaford 0 Steyning 1 After the break we continued where we'd left
off in the first-half and plugged way mercilessly to try and
increase our advantage. Fine efforts from Chad Milner and Matt Dodd
came close to adding to to our lead and a couple of rather
questionable off-side decisions could well have denied us. However,
we stuck with it and on 78 minutes after combining well with Lee
Early, Chad Milner slotted home his and our second to effectively
put the game out of Seaford's reach. We pretty much dominated the
second-half with everyone putting in a good shift and it wasn't
until the closing stages that Ben Rose was really called into
action, saving well at close range from the hosts' Michael Flynn.
The final whistle was greeted with delight by all those who
travelled with 3 well earned points in the bank!
Result - Seaford 0 Steyning 2
