Aviation plays a unique role in connecting people. The challenge for architecture is to balance the glamorous legacy of flight with sustainable facilities that serve future generations.

For over twenty years, 3DReid has been working on all aspects of an airfield’s operation from logistics, operational and support buildings to passenger terminals and has a keen understanding of the political, business and stakeholder drivers.

We have in-depth experience of designing airportfacilities, both airside operations and landside facilitiesincluding car parking and logistics.

We have worked closely with main contractorsunder design and build contracts to deliver new build, extensions and refurbishment of international hub andregional airports.

Our UK airport experience covers over 20 airports from Aberdeen to Southampton and includes small civil airports, executive terminals (FBO’s) and major hubs including framework positions for both Heathrow and Gatwick.

We have worked across a number of major airports globally including a new airport in Brazil, Gibraltar; Abu Dhabi International Airport; Antigua; Libya; Hong Kong International Airport and a major terminal redevelopment for Male International Airport in the Maldives.

Improving the Passenger Experience3DReid has established a strong reputation for terminalrefurbishments, building a portfolio of complex projectsthat enhance the passenger experience, from drop off and interchange facilities, through check-in and security; immigration and departures lounges to piers, satellites and air-bridges.

We have also designed a number of baggage facilitiesincluding the Transfer Baggage Facility at Abu DhabiInternational Airport and various facilities acrossHeathrow Terminals 1, 3 and 5; Gatwick Airport and Birmingham Airport.

We understand the specific challenges of working withinlive, passenger facing environments, where it is essential to minimise the impact of construction works on the airport operations and passenger experience and to ensure high standards of health and safety are maintained at all times.

3DReid are recognised industry experts in the aviation sector, having over 20 years aviation facility design experience from large hubs to small regional airports.

Design and delivery of a new international terminal to be used by passengers entering and exiting the building from both Gibraltar and Spain. The new arrangements create opportunities for flights from all over Spain and the rest of Europe to Gibraltar.

A uniquely challenging brief for a design that must seamlessly accommodate different passenger flows. The architectural solution takes maximum advantage of the stunning backdrop of The Rock.

3DReid provided architectural and lead consultant services to support the joint venture bid by VINCI / Al Bawani for the new Terminal 5 at Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The concept design included a new terminal facility designed to flex between an initial domestic operation and a long term international facility together with associated landside and airside infrastructure. The design incorporated a construction strategy to meet an 18 month delivery target.

3DReid is the only practice to have a position on all 3 generations of the Architects framework for BAA/Heathrow. Part of this role included Lead Designers on BAA’s ‘Tomorrow’s T4’, a suite of projects which transformed Heathrow’s Terminal 4. The project was delivered from inception to completion over a 30 month period within the £180 million budget. New projects included a 7750m2 departures concourse extension,

departures forecourt, public realm plaza and 1400m2 CIP lounge accommodation.

Full refurbishment projects included the existing departures concourse, central search area, transfers security area, airside arrivals concourse and the immigration hall.

Full 25 year masterplan and new terminal design for this existing airport facility in the Maldives. The masterplan aimed to maximise the efficiency of this constrained coastal site, whilst allowing for future flexibility.

The design had to touch the earth lightly in both form and materials and using passive methods of design, in keeping with the idyllic setting and large tourism based traffic.

The design achieved a high LEED rating. Simple planning allowed for focus to be applied on the finishes and lapping waves roof, making the terminal a real gateway to the island.

Concept for a significant medium-term refurbishment of ADIA terminal 1 to cater for up to 15 million passengers per annum.

Our proposals included an extendable forecourt drop off and collection zone outside the terminal that could grow incrementally with passenger numbers. Internal arrangements were also designed to be flexible, with finishes highly specified to meet the requirements and expectations of the passengers.

United Airline Lounges, Heathrow T2

Located in the newly completed The Queen’s Terminal (T2) at Heathrow, the United Global First Lounge is one of two new United facilities at Heathrow’s new Star Alliance terminal and are testament to United Airlines’ commitment to Heathrow as its hub for Europe.

Building the United brand is key to future lounges and 3DReid worked closely with Chicago based practice Solomon Cordwell Buenz on designs for the interiors of the Club lounge, aimed at First Class passengers.

The facility reinforces a new design concept recently launched at Chicago O’Hare airport which aims to signpost passengers with distinct design elements that reflect the location of the lounge. Notable features include a long, sweeping bar, floor to ceiling windows with views of the airfield and high-quality finishes throughout.

International design competition win to deliver a new business aviation airport. The project includes a 35m high ATC tower, 28,000sqm aircraft hangar and a 4,000sqm operations and headquarters building, which won a RIBA Award.

The innovative operations building design was delivered under budget using 25,000 aluminium shingles on the terminal, which are 100% recyclable.

The project has generated numerous spin-off projects and become a backdrop for Hollywood movies including Inception and Quantum of Solace.

3DReid won this limited design competition to design the first bespoke business aviation facility to serve Moscow.

The aim was to use dramatic landscaping to ‘reveal’ the low sitting terminal building as passengers approach, adding to the excitement of flight. The project includes a signature ATC tower and hangars.

The commission included a masterplan charting growthof the airport from 2 mppa to 7 mppa and the resultingdesign is a sleek, but modular construction that can grow in line with demand.

The scheme started on site in autumn 2013.

Aiming to be the first dedicated facility of its kind in Brazil, this private airport will comprise two runways, one to the north for international flights and the other to the south for domestic operations. In addition there will be the phased provision of apron accommodation, an international VIP terminal and integrated ATC tower, an international VVIP terminal, domestic fixed base operator (FBO), fire and rescue facilities, data centre and other ancillary buildings.

The airport acts as a catalyst for the wider commercial development of the area to include housing; educational campuses and commercial offices.

The scheme started on site early 2014.

Executive Jet Facility, Luton Airport

A new standalone executive jet facility for Signature Flight Support, one of the world’s leading Fixed BaseOperators. The building includes a 15,000 sqft VIP terminal and 45,000 sqft hangar facility capable of housing 2 BBJ aircraft and a dedicated ground support equipment store and workshop.

This project not only provides the highest level of terminal environment for passengers and crew, but also paves the way for a standard facility model that Signature can use in future developments across their expansive global operations.

7-star business aviation airport, including terminal, hangars and office space.

The solution combines all these elements into a single composition in order to create a landmark facility with an identifiable image, visible from far away. The terminal and offices re planned around lushly planted, water-filled courtyard gardens, creating a high quality environment and structurally efficient solution within a cost effective facility. The design has the capability of simple expansion as operational requirements demand and the form of buildings minimises energy usage.

70,900sqft FBO and hangar complex with 90 metre clear door span and the capacity to accommodate a mix of jets.

Security and discretion are vitally important factors. The building is accessed via a secure approach road and includes ground floor VIP aircraft handling linked to a mezzanine flight operations centre, office suites for associated airport-related businesses and further areas dedicated to jet maintenance operations.

The hangar design concept develops the approach taken at Farnborough, using an innovative structural design solution to create a column free ‘clear-span’ interior.
