Now I know what you’re thinking, how could I have possibly known in September that John Sergeant was going to be the undisputed star of Strictly Come Dancing? Some could (sceptically) say that I didn’t actually know this and it was all a bit of a fl uke and to these good people I’d like to say... you’re right! The gods of programming have truly shone down on Winchester and we’ll be welcoming a vast array of sparkling talent, including the BBC’s King of the Ballroom (page 4), this spring.
Kicking off the musical shining lights for 2009 is jazz sensation Clare Teal (page 4) followed closely by singer/songwriter Newton Faulkner (page 5), the big sounds of The Bollywood Brass Band (page 7) and the voice of Clannad, Moya Brennan (page 14).
Hands up all those who sported a ‘Lady Di’, carried a mobile phone the size of a house brick, fancied Magnum PI, remember shoulder pads you could land aircraft on and listened to Radio 1 at lunchtime to see if they’d play ‘Relax’ when it reached number 1. Ah the ‘80’s, fondly remembered as the decade when capitalism was brought to the masses and our chosen era for TRW’s next stunning, production Speed The Plow by David Mamet (page 10).
We pride ourselves at TRW on being a friendly theatre and what better way to demonstrate this than by organising a couple of great events to bring like-minded people together? Not only will we be fussing over folk who prefer to go to the theatre on their own (pages 8 and 16) but

The Bollywood Brass Band The Calculating Mr OneSat 7 Feb at 8:00pm
Bollywood meets brass meets Bhangra! Don’t miss the Bollywood Brass Band, the UK’s first Indian wedding brass band, playing hits from Indian films, Bhangra and other South Asian styles. The band arose as a collaboration with the Shyam Brass Band from Jabalpur, India.
A key ingredient is dhol drummers, playing rhythms from the Punjab, which gives their music its infectious rhythm. The Bollywood Brass Band style is a London masala of Bhangra beats, with flavours from jazz and world music.
The last ten years have taken the band to festivals and venues all over Europe, Australia, Canada and India. Bollywood fever has swept the UK and continues to spread. Don’t miss this extraordinary musical phenomenon.

Tues 10 Feb 10:00am and 1:30pm
1898, London. Someone is trying to steal Professor Ebenezer Brain Teaser’s latest invention, an incredible calculating machine. Will Jeremiah Bloodhound, probably Britain’s worst Private Detective, add two and two together? Why are ‘Circus Numero’ the ‘prime’ suspects? And why are they ‘counting’ on Kitty Beagle to ‘calculate’ who is Mr One? By using number patterns, mental calculations and deduction, help ‘Bloodhound and Beagle’ unravel this mathematical mystery.
Aimed at Key Stage 2 pupils, The Calculating Mr One is a lively musical comedy written by Michael Whitmore with music by Gideon Escott. This show is a whodunit with a difference!

Die Fledermaus Fascinating AidaPresented by Opera della Luna
Wed 11 to Sat 14 Feb 7:30pmMatinées (Thurs & Sat) 2:30pm This is surely one of the world’s most famous operettas and it now gets a glittering new look by the country’s best small-scale operetta company, which now turns its hand to Johann Strauss and this most sparkling of scores.
Dr Falke was once left to wander home, drunk, and dressed as a bat, by his friend Gabriel von Eisenstein.
To exact his revenge he arranges for Eisenstein to attend an extremelyrisqué party at the home of the outrageous Russian aristocrat, Prince Orlofsky, and there Eisenstein seduces a mysterious Hungarian countess, who is in fact his own wife in disguise. An evening not to be missed!
Solo theatre goers see page 16
Presented by Nick Brooke LtdStarring Dillie Keane, Adela Anderson & Liza Pulman
Thurs 26 Feb 7:30pm
Not a comeback, but a quarter-century birthday celebration! Britain’s top female comedy trio are 25 years old (well, older actually, but they have decided their Silver Jubilee can be celebrated for a few more years at least)!
Dillie Keane formed Fascinating Aida in 1983 and has tried to shake it off ever since. It keeps coming back to haunt her - and you! Twenty five years, five continents, six West End runs, six albums, five nominations (three Olivier, one Drama Desk, one Perrier), two books, one glorious transsexual,
784 sopranos and they are back! Not bad going. Now with new songs, not for money but just for the fun of it and playing to an even older audience than before. Shuffle to get a ticket and grumble at the steepness of the stairs!

Clive James in the Evening Richard Herring - the Headmaster’s SonPresented by Jeremy Meadow
Fri 27 Feb 8:00pm Photo by David Levene/Guardian News &
Media Ltd 2008
Writer, broadcaster, raconteur - and Australia’s finest export - Clive James has been a British institution for longer than he cares to remember. In an unprecedented feat of strength he carries his latest book on stage and then talks about almost anything else, after which he answers questions about everything except his liaison with Margarita Pracatan. Famous for writing the way he talks, Clive James can talk the way he writes. When asked if he was actually really
a stand-up comedian, Clive was the man who lay back in his sun-lounger beside the swimming pool of the Four Seasons hotel in Los Angeles and said “What does it look like?” Concludes with an exclusive question and answer session - pitch your own question to the master interviewer!

Sun 1 Mar 8:00pm
What’s worse than being a podgy, swotty, virginal schoolboy? What if your dad’s the headmaster too? In 1981 at the Kings of Wessex Upper School in Cheddar in Somerset, this was the nightmare reality for Richard Herring, son of TK “The Kipper” Herring. How on earth did he cope? Herring dusts off his old diaries, rekindles memories that might best have been left forgotten and picks the scabs off of wounds that he thought had healed to discover if he can, as he hopes, blame his upbringing for his adult failures.
In the 1990s Richard Herring was in the prodigious double act Lee and Herring, who created the cult classic BBC2 shows Fist of Fun and This Morning With Richard Not Judy. More recently he has written and starred in ITV1’s You Can Choose Your Friends and Radio 4’s Banter.

Happy Birthday Fascinating Aida!

Stones in His PocketsThurs 12 to Sat 14 Mar 8:00pm
The West End hit is back on tour!
Back by popular demand, this classic comedy by Marie Jones has won numerous theatre awards including the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy, as well as three Tony nominations on Broadway. After five fabulous years in the West End and numerous sell-out tours, Stones in His Pockets is back to delight audiences across the country this spring.
When a major Hollywood film studio descends on a village in rural Ireland, the demand for extras from the local community is huge. As the story unfolds, just two talented actors brilliantly bring to life over 15 extraordinary characters.
By David MametPresented by Theatre Royal Winchester
Wed 4 to Sun 8 Mar 8:00pmMatinées (Thurs and Sat) 2:30pm
‘Industry produces wealth, God speed the plow’.
In this celebrated black comedy, two Hollywood producers clash over the age-old movie business dilemma of money versus art. Should the studio greenlight another sure-fire blockbuster or an art-house adaptation of an obscure yet brilliant novel? When the young office temp’s opinion is sought by one of them, sex and its resultant power games begin to muddy the waters even further in this hilarious and scathingly satirical dissection of Hollywood at its most shameless and shameful.
Speed The Plow is Pulitzer Prize-winner David Mamet’s deftest and funniest work, crammed full of brilliant one liners and chilling insight, and is currently enjoying a successful run on
Broadway. Mamet is the author of such classics as Glengarry Glen Ross and American Buffalo and his screenwriting credits include such films as The Untouchables, The Postman Always Rings Twice and The Verdict.
This dazzling and incisive play reveals Mamet’s mastery of the language of moral cupidity and shows his intimate knowledge of the darker motivations and subtle power plays of human nature. Set in the eighties - that era of unstoppable ego, greed and ambition - this production, directed by James Barry, is a distillation of the tensions, moral challenges and tests of character that life throws our way, played out in the dog-eat-dog world of mega-corporate show business, where the stakes are high and the struggle is merciless. Licensed by arrangement with The Agency (London) Ltd.

Billy LiarPresented by Middle Ground Theatre Company Ltd
By Keith Waterhouse & Willis Hall
Directed and designed by Michael Lunney
Tues 24 to Sat 28 Mar 7:30pmMatinée 2:30pm (Wed & Sat)
Billy Fisher is less than inspired with his job as an undertaker’s clerk in a dull Yorkshire town. He escapes his humdrum existence by daydreaming his way to a mythical fantasy kingdom where Billy becomes ruler, hero and lover! He has aspirations as a script writer in the big city, but his over-eager imagination leads him to tell constant tall stories which create havoc in his work, family and romantic life! His hilarious exploits eventually lead him to make a difficult decision… This charming, warm, witty and sensitive comic masterpiece is compelling viewing for all ages. Albert Finney made a legendary West-End
success of Billy in 1960, while he was immortalised by Tom Courtenay in the classic 1963 film. Helen Fraser, who starred as Barbara in the original film, now returns to play Billy’s mother and leads an all-star cast in Middle Ground’s timeless production. For anybody who has ever dreamed…
Stars Helen Fraser with Dicken Ashworth (Coronation Street, Emmerdale), Lauren Drummond (Waterloo Road, The Royal), Victoria Hawkins (Emmerdale), Chris Hannon (Coronation Street) and Holly Quin-Ankrah (Grange Hill, Rock Rivals).

Dave Cookson was trapped in his own physique, pin-toed, and narrow shouldered with a sunken chest. But he wanted to be somebody, he wanted a body women would fight over and men would envy. The only trouble was he couldn’t bring himself to do anything about it; after endless hours in his homemade gym, Dave was getting nowhere fast. No training, no girlfriend, no muscle. But then something happened to change his life. Now Dave is 17 stone

Artist Stuart Forrester returns to Theatre Royal Winchester with a predominantly new collection of work. Stuart comments, “Exhibiting in the atrium gives me a great opportunity to display work in a very exciting and challenging space. Last year was the starting point to building up a new portfolio of work.”
“The pictures on exhibition are of a contemporary style with the colour to each composition being simply everything, creating the essential ingredients of mood and movement.”

Katie writes of her approach to photography, “I like the approach of framing nature, pointing it out. Take the simple image of the leaf, we all walk by these everyday, it is only when it is framed that it becomes amazing. I like looking at things through a lens as it seems to put the rest of the world into perspective. Everybody is always looking at the bigger picture; I like to concentrate on the small.”
“I moved to Winchester after falling in love with the city when I moved here for Uni. I live centrally and work in Southampton. I have always taken pictures as a hobby for as long as I can remember. I used to watch my Dad when I was younger and thought he was pretty cool he once told me about the involvement photography had on his life when he was younger.”
