THEATRE ROYAL DRURY LANEFor more than 100 years, Theatre Royal Drury Lane ( ‘TRDL’) has been home to some of the
most breathtaking spectacles seen on a West End stage as well as being at the forefront of
theatre innovation. In January 2019 the TRDL closed for a £60 million refurbishment. The
TRDL will reopen in Autumn 2020 and will be home to Disney’s spectacular new musical,
Frozen.
The restored TRDL building takes the theatre back to its original splendour, this centrepiece
of Covent Garden will be re-imagined for the 21st century. We are going beyond theatre,
creating a culturally inspired, multi-offer destination where the customer experience is
always centre stage.
We are shifting the way customers think and interact with the building by opening it up as
an all-day accessible destination. Guests will be encouraged to stay all day if they have the
time –indulging in artisan coffee, afternoon tea, gallery-style shopping, guided tours,
luxurious cocktails and delicious cuisine ranging from light bites to fine dining, soaking up
our lavish history even when they are not theatre-bound. Thousands more people will be
enjoying the building each week.
Our magnificent theatre will be at the heart of the building, staging the most spectacular
musical productions in London’s West End. As part of the renovations, the auditorium will
offer wider seats, more legroom and better sightlines, bringing audiences closer to the
action than ever before. Innovative work to the stage house will ensure that we are able to
house the biggest musicals in the West End offering audiences sensational experiences.
POSITIONOVERVIEW
The Venue Technician (Electrics) will be responsible for carrying out a wide
range of electrical maintenance works and projects to ensure the venue is
continually well presented.
They will need to be the ‘on call/ on duty’ destination venue technician and
to control and manage the activities of venue contractors whilst on site and
manage technical aspects of events, concerts, conferences and other venue
hires always delivering on excellent service to our customers.
RESPONSIBILITIES:CUSTOMER
• The Venue Technician (Electrics) will work as part of the Electrics
department to ensure our customers are at the heart of everything we do
by delivering the highest technical standards of customer service
throughout the venue.
• The Venue Technician (Electrics) will help with the technical fulfilment of
events and productions as required by the Head of Electrics, ensuring the
Company’s interests are safeguarded and the highest possible production
standards are maintained.
• The ‘look and feel’ of our venue is very important; the Venue Technician
(Electrics) will help ensure the quality of the technical presentation
throughout the venue, day and night. This will involve following practical
regimes and arrangements to ensure an exemplary standard is
maintained.
RESPONSIBILITIES:CONTENT• In conjunction with the Senior Venue Technician, to ensure appropriate arrangements
are in place for the effective management of:
• The maintenance and upkeep of the venue.
• The electrical installation, lighting and emergency lighting.
• Fire safety and suppression equipment.
• Technical facilities such as digital screens, door access systems, tills and CCTV.
• The continuous supply of metered utilities.
• Telephony and IT solution.
• The venues facilities, services and fixtures and fittings.
• Electrical building projects.
• If instructed by the Head of Electrics and Senior Venue Technician (Electrics), the Venue
Technician (Electrics) will help supervise Venue Technicians and incoming events staff
as required. Ensure all personnel are fully briefed on health and safety procedures, and
performance/day schedules.
• The Venue Technician (Electrics) will act as duty technician to make sure work in the
venue adheres to the Company’s working practices and guidelines.
• In conjunction with the Senior Venue Technician (Electrics), the Venue Technician
(Electrics) will assist the Head of Electrics with training and induction for incoming
events, with specific emphasis on the safe working practices of the venue including
evacuation procedures.
RESPONSIBILITIES:COMMERCIAL
• In conjunction with the Senior Venue Technician (Electrics), the Venue
Technician (Electrics) will ensure staff hours are being used efficiently to
meet the requirements of visiting event companies and LW Theatres Group,
ensuring this is in line with the Working Time Directive.
• If required by the Senior Venue Technician (Electrics) or Head of Electrics, the
Venue Technician (Electrics) will actively source the best commercial deals
for the Company and regularly review the costs and quality of service in
relation to all suppliers and service providers.
• The Venue Technician (Electrics) will ensure essential supplies are ordered
for the building, maintaining appropriate stock levels, with approval from the
Senior Venue Technician (Electrics) or Head of Electrics.
RESPONSIBILITIES:CULTURE
• The Venue Technician (Electrics) will proactively support the Head of
Electrics in monitoring health and safety performance at the TRDL in line
with Company policy and statutory provisions at all times; ensuring a
positive and proactive approach to Health & Safety at the Theatre is
driven.
• The Venue Technician (Electrics) will ensure that appropriate risk
assessments are in place and regularly updated. Ensuring any
recommendations are contained in risk assessments, for the production
or building, are discussed with the Head of Electrics or Senior Venue
Technician (Electrics).
• The Venue Technician (Electrics) will liaise with the Head of Electrics
and Senior Venue Technician (Electrics) to assist with general
maintenance issues; ensuring all technical equipment owned by LW
Theatres Group is maintained to the required standards.
RESPONSIBILITIES:COMPLIANCE• In conjunction with the Senior Venue Technician (Electrics), the Venue
Technician (Electrics) will be responsible for monitoring and maintaining:
o The electrical installation, lighting and emergency lighting systems.
o Health & safety performance at the TRDL in line with Company policy
and statutory provisions at all times.
o COSHH, LOLER and any other Health & Safety records as required and
directed by the Head of Electrics.
• The Venue Technician (Electrics) will ensure that the Company’s Health and
Safety Policy and Alcohol & Substance Abuse Policy are adhered to.
• The Venue Technician (Electrics) will ensure that all technical areas are kept
tidy and well maintained and that an excellent standard of general
housekeeping is sustained at all times.
• The Venue Technician (Electrics) will ensure that sensible trucking/parking
arrangements are in place and that trucks are loaded/unloaded with due
regard to the theatre’s neighbours.
THE IDEALCANDIDATE
The Venue Technician (Electrics) will have:
• A practical knowledge of technical theatre systems, particularly those which are business critical.
• Extensive knowledge of the Health & Safety requirements associated with Theatrical
management.
• Pragmatic and proactive approach to resource planning.
• The ability to build positive working relationships.
• Proven ability to successfully balance a busy workload and work under pressure.
• Ability to work either as part of a team or independently.
• Willingness to challenge existing working methods and to introduce new working practices.
• Knowledge of Construction and Design Management 2015.
• A working knowledge of Technical Standards for Places of Entertainment.
