    Introduction

    One thing which surprises nonMuslims who are

    examiningthebookverycloselyisthattheQurandoesnot

    appear to them to be what they expected. What they

    assume

    is

    that

    they

    have

    an

    old

    book

    which

    came

    fourteen

    centuries ago from theArabian desert; and they expect

    that thebook should look something like that an old

    bookfromthedesert.Andthentheyfindoutthatitdoes

    notresemblewhattheyexpectedatall.Additionally,one

    ofthefirstthingsthatsomepeopleassumeisthatbecause

    it

    is

    an

    old

    book

    which

    comes

    from

    the

    desert,

    it

    should

    talkaboutthedesert.WelltheQurandoestalkaboutthe

    desert someofitsimagerydescribesthedesert;butitalso

    talksaboutthesea whatitsliketobeinastormonthe

    sea.

    MerchantMarine

    Someyearsago,thestorycametous inTorontoabouta

    man who was in themerchant marine and made his

    livingonthesea.AMuslimgavehimatranslationofthe

    Quran

    to

    read.

    The

    merchant

    marine

    knew

    nothing

    about

    the history of Islam but was interested in reading the

    Quran.Whenhefinishedreadingit,hebroughtitbackto

    the Muslim and asked, This Muhammad, was he a

    sailor?Hewas impressed athowaccurately theQuran

    describesa stormon a sea.Whenhewas told,Noasa

    matter

    of

    fact,

    Muhammad

    lived

    in

    the

    desert,

    that

    was

    enoughforhim.HeembracedIslamonthespot.

    HewassoimpressedwiththeQuransdescriptionbecause

    he hadbeen in a storm on the sea, and he knew that

    whoeverhadwritten thatdescriptionhadalsobeen ina

    stormonthesea.Thedescriptionof

    awave,

    over

    it

    awave,

    over

    it

    clouds

    (Surah

    Nur,

    24:40)

    wasnotwhatsomeoneimaginingastormonaseatobe

    likewouldhavewritten;rather,itwaswrittenbysomeone

    whoknewwhatastormon theseawas like.This isone

    exampleofhowtheQuranisnottiedtocertainplaceand

    time.Certainly,thescientificideasexpressedin italsodo

    not seem tooriginate from thedesert fourteen centuries

    ago.

    TheSmallest

    Thing

    Many centuries before the onset of Muhammads

    prophethood, therewas awellknown theory of atomism

    advancedby theGreekphilosopher,Democritus.Heand

    the

    people

    who

    came

    after

    him

    assumed

    that

    matter

    consistsof tiny, indestructible, indivisibleparticlescalled

    atoms.TheArabstoo,usedtodealinthesameconcept;in

    fact, theArabicword dharrah commonly referred to the

    smallestparticleknowntoman.Now,modernsciencehas

    discoveredthatthissmallestunitofmatter(i.e.,theatom,

    which

    has

    all

    of

    the

    same

    properties

    as

    its

    element)

    can

    be

    split into its component parts. This is a new idea, a

    developmentofthelastcentury;yet;interestinglyenough,

    this information had already been documented in the

    Quran(SurahSaba,34:3)whichstates:

    He[i.e.,Allah]isawareofanatomsweightinthe

    heavensand

    on

    the

    earth

    and

    even

    anything

    smaller

    thanthat...

    Undoubtedly,fourteencenturiesagothatstatementwould

    have looked unusual, even to an Arab. For him, the

    dharrahwas thesmallest thing therewas. Indeed, this is

    proof,thattheQuranisnotoutdated.

    Honey

    Anotherexampleofwhatonemightexpecttofind inan

    old book that touches upon the subject of health or

    medicineisoutdatedremediesorcures.Varioushistorical

    sources

    state

    that

    the

    Prophet

    ()

    gave

    some

    advice

    about

    healthandhygiene,yetmostofthesepiecesofadviceare

    not contained in theQuran.At firstglance, to thenon

    Muslims this appears tobe a negligent omission. They

    cannotunderstandwhyAllahwouldnotincludesuch

    helpfulinformationintheQuran.SomeMuslimsattempt

    to

    explain

    this

    absence

    with

    the

    following

    argument:

    AlthoughtheProphetsadvicewassoundandapplicable

    to the time in which he lived, Allah, in His infinite

    wisdom,knew that therewould come latermedicaland

    scientific advances which would make the Prophets

    adviceappearoutdated.Whenlaterdiscoveriesoccurred,

    peoplemightsay thatsuch informationcontradictedthat

    whichtheProphet()hadgiven.Thus,sinceAllahwouldneverallowanyopportunityforthenonMuslimstoclaim

    that theQuran contradicts itself or the teachings of the

    Prophet(),Heonly included in theQuran information

    and examples which could stand the test of time.

    However, when one examines the true realities of the

    Quranin

    terms

    of

    its

    existence

    as

    adivine

    revelation,

    the

    entire matter is quickly brought into its proper

    perspective,andtheerrorinsuchargumentationbecomes

    clearand

    understandable.

    It must be understood that the Quran is a divine

    revelation,andas such,all information in it isofdivine

    origin.Allah revealed theQuran fromHimself. It is the

    wordsofAllah,which existedbefore creation,and thus

    nothing canbeadded, subtracted or altered. In essence,

    theQuran

    existed

    and

    was

    complete

    before

    the

    creation

    of

    ProphetMuhammad(),soitcouldnotpossiblycontain

    anyoftheProphetsownwordsoradvice.Aninclusionof

    suchinformationwouldclearlycontradictthepurposefor

    which the Quran exists, compromise its authority and

    renderitinauthenticasadivinerevelation.

    Consequently,there

    was

    no

    home

    remedies

    in

    the

    Quranwhichonecouldclaimtobeoutdated;nordoesit

    containanymansviewaboutwhatisbeneficialtohealth,

    what food isbest to eat, orwhatwill cure this or that

    disease.Infact,theQuranonlymentionsoneitemdealing

    withmedicaltreatment,anditisnotindisputebyanyone.

    Itstates

    that

    in

    honey

    there

    is

    healing.

    And

    certainly,

    Ido

    notthinkthatthereisanyonewhowillarguewiththat!

    ProphetMuhammad

    ()

    and

    the

    Quran

    Ifoneassumes thattheQuran is theproductofamans

    mind,thenonewouldexpectittoreflectsomeofwhatwas

    goingon in themindof themanwhocomposed it.In

    fact,

    certain

    encyclopedias

    and

    various

    books

    claim

    that

    the Quran was the product of hallucinations that

    Muhammad underwent. If these claims are true if it

    indeed originated from some psychologicalproblems in

    Muhammads mind then evidence of this would be

    apparentintheQuran.Istheresuchevidence?Inorderto

    determine

    whether

    or

    not

    there

    is,

    one

    must

    first

    identify

    whatthingswouldhavebeengoingoninhismindatthat

    timeandthensearchforthesethoughtsandreflectionsin

    theQuran.

    ItiscommonknowledgethatMuhammad()hadavery

    difficult life.Allofhisdaughtersdiedbeforehimexcept

    one,and

    he

    had

    awife

    of

    several

    years

    who

    was

    very

    dear

    and important to him,who not only proceeded him in

    deathbutdied at a very criticalperiod of his life.As a

    matteroffact,shemusthavebeenquiteawomanbecause

    whenthefirstrevelationcametohim,heranhometoher,

    afraid.Certainly,eventodayonewouldhaveahardtime

    trying

    to

    find

    an

    Arab

    who

    would

    tell

    you,

    I

    was

    so

    afraid thatI ranhometomywife.Theyjustarent that

    way.YetMuhammad()feltcomfortableenoughwithhis

    wifeto

    be

    able

    to

    do

    that.

    Thats

    how

    influential

    and

    strongwomanshewas.Althoughtheseexamplesareonly

    a few of the subjects that would have been on

    Muhammads mind, they are sufficient in intensity to

    provemypoint.

    TheQurandoesnotmentionanyofthesethings notthe

    deathof

    his

    children,

    not

    the

    death

    of

    his

    beloved

    companionandwife,nothisfearoftheinitialrevelations,

    whichhesobeautifullysharedwithhiswife nothing;yet

    these topics must have hurt him, bothered him, and

    caused him pain and grief during periods of his life.

    Indeed, if theQuranwasaproductofhispsychological

    reflections,then

    these

    subjects,

    as

    well

    as

    others,

    would

    be

    prevalentoratleastmentionedthroughout.

    Basically

    it

    states,

    If

    this

    book

    is

    not

    whatitclaimstobe,thenallyouhavetodoisthisorthisor

    thistoprovethatitisfalse.Ofcourse,in1400yearsno

    onehasbeenabletodoThisorthisorthis,andthusitis

    stillconsideredtrueandauthentic.

    FalsificationTest

    I suggest toyou that thenext timeyouget intodispute

    withsomeoneaboutIslamandheclaimsthathehasthe

    truth and thatyou are in darkness,you leave all other

    argumentsatfirstandmakethissuggestion.Askhim,Is

    thereany

    falsification

    test

    in

    your

    religion?

    Is

    there

    anythinginyourreligionthatwouldproveyouarewrong

    ifIcouldprovetoyouthatitexists anything?Well,Ican

    promiserightnowthatpeoplewillnothaveanything no

    test,noproof,nothing!Thisisbecausetheydonotcarry

    around the idea that they shouldnotonlypresentwhat

    theybelieve

    but

    should

    also

    offer

    others

    achance

    to

    prove

    theyrewrong.However,Islamdoesthat.

    A perfect example of how Islam provides man with a

    chance to verify it authenticity and prove it wrong

    occursinthe4thchapter.Andquiethonestly,Iwasvery

    surprisedwhen I firstdiscovered thischallenge.Itstates

    Had

    it

    been

    from

    anyotherthanAllah,theywouldsurelyhavefound

    thereinmuchdiscrepancy.

    This isa clear challenge to thenonMuslim.Basically, it

    invites him to find a mistake. As a matter of fact, the

    seriousnessanddifficultyofthechallengeaside,theactual

    presentationof

    such

    achallenge

    in

    the

    first

    place

    is

    not

    even in human nature and is inconsistent with mans

    personality.Onedoesnt takeanexaminschoolandafter

    finishingtheexam,writeanotetotheinstructorattheend

    saying,Thisexamisperfect.Therearenomistakesinit.

    Findoneifyoucan!Onejustdoesntdothat.Theteacher

    wouldnot

    sleep

    until

    he

    found

    amistake!

    And

    yet

    this

    is

    thewaytheQuranapproachespeople.

    AskThose

    Who

    Have

    Knowledge

    Another interesting attitude that exists in the Quran

    repeatedlydealswith itsadvicetothereader.TheQuran

    informsthereaderaboutdifferentfactsandthengivesthe

    advice:

    If

    you

    want

    to

    know

    more

    about

    this

    or

    that,

    or

    if

    youdoubtwhat issaid, thenyou shouldask thosewho

    haveknowledge.Thistooisasurprisingattitude.Itisnot

    usual tohaveabook thatcomes from someonewithout

    trainingingeography,botany,biology,etc.,whodiscusses

    these subjectsand thenadvises thereader toaskmenof

    knowledge

    if

    he

    doubts

    anything.

    Yet

    in

    every

    age

    there

    havebeenMuslimswhohavefollowed theadviceof the

    Quranandmadesurprisingdiscoveries.Ifonelookstothe

    worksofMuslim scientistsofmany centuries ago,one

    will find them fullofquotations from theQuran.These

    worksstatethattheydidresearchinsuchaplace,looking

    for something. And they affirm that the reason they

    looked in such and such a place was that the Quran

    pointedtheminthatdirection.

    Forexample,theQuranmentionsmansoriginandthen

    tells the reader,Research it! Itgives the reader ahint

    where to look and then states that one should find out

    moreabout

    it.

    This

    is

    the

    kind

    of

    thing

    that

    Muslims

    today

    largelyseemtooverlook butnotalways,asillustratedin

    thefollowingexample.

    Embryology

    Afewyearsago,agroupofmeninRiyadh,SaudiArabia

    collected all of the verses in the Quran which discuss

    embryology thegrowthofthehumanbeinginthewomb.

    Theysaid,

    Here

    is

    what

    the

    Quran

    says.

    Is

    it

    the

    truth?

    In essence, they took theadviceof theQuran:Ask the

    men who know. They chose, as it happened, a non

    Muslim who is a professor of embryology at the

    UniversityofToronto.HisnameisKeithMoore,andheis

    theauthoroftextbooksonembryology aworldexperton

    the

    subject.

    They

    invited

    him

    to

    Riyadh

    and

    said,

    This

    is

    whattheQuransaysaboutyoursubject.Isittrue?What

    canyoutellus?

    WhilehewasinRiyadh,theygavehimallthehelpthathe

    neededintranslationandallofthecooperationforwhich

    heasked.Andhewassosurprisedatwhathefoundthat

    hechanged

    his

    textbooks.

    In

    fact,

    in

    the

    second

    edition

    of

    oneofhisbooks,calledBeforeWeAreBorn...inthesection

    about the history of embryology, he included some

    materialthatwasnotinthefirsteditionbecauseofwhathe

    found in theQuranwasaheadof itstimeandthatthose

    whobelieveintheQuranknowwhatotherpeopledonot

    know.

    Ihad thepleasureof interviewingDr.KeithMoorefora

    televisionpresentation,andwetalkedagreatdealabout

    was

    illustrated

    by

    slides

    and

    so

    on.

    He

    mentioned

    that someof the things that theQuran states about the

    growthof thehumanbeingwerenotknownuntil thirty

    yearsago.Infact,hesaidthatoneiteminparticular the

    Quransdescriptionof thehumanbeingasaleechlike

    clot(alaqah)[Ghafir40:67] wasnewtohim;butwhen

    hechecked

    on

    it,

    he

    found

    that

    it

    was

    true,

    and

    so

    he

    added it tohisbook.He said, I never thought of that

    before,andhewenttothezoologydepartmentandasked

    forapictureofaleech.Whenhefoundthatitlookedjust

    like the human embryo, he decided to include both

    picturesinoneofhistextbooks.

    Althoughthe

    aforementioned

    example

    of

    man

    researching

    information contained in the Quran deals with a non

    Muslim,itisstillvalidbecauseheisoneof thosewhois

    knowledgeableinthesubjectbeingresearched.Hadsome

    layman claimed that what the Quran says about

    embryology istrue,thenonewouldnotnecessarilyhave

    toaccept

    his

    word.

    However,

    because

    of

    the

    high

    position,

    respect, and esteem man gives scholars, one naturally

    assumes that if they research a subject and arrive at a

    conclusionbasedon thatresearch,then theconclusion is

    valid.

    SkepticsReaction

    Dr.Moorealsowrote abook on clinical embryology, and

    whenhepresentedthisinformation inToronto,itcaused

    quiteastirthroughoutCanada.Itwasonthefrontpages

    ofsome

    of

    the

    newspapers

    across

    Canada,

    and

    some

    of

    the

    headlineswere quite funny. For instance, one headline

    read: SURPRISING THING FOUND IN ANCIENT

    PRAYERBOOK!Itseemsobviousfromthisexamplethat

    peopledonotclearlyunderstandwhatitisallabout.Asa

    matter of fact, one newspaper reporter asked Professor

    Moore,

    Dont

    you

    think

    that

    maybe

    the

    Arabs

    might

    have known about these things thedescription of the

    embryo, itsappearanceandhow itchanges andgrows?

    Maybe they were not scientists, maybe they did some

    crude dissections on their own carveduppeopleand

    examined these things. The professor immediately

    pointed

    out

    to

    him

    that

    he

    [i.e.,

    the

    reporter]

    had

    missed

    a

    veryimportantpoint alloftheslidesoftheembryothat

    hadbeen shownand thathadbeenprojected in thefilm

    hadcomefrompictures taken throughamicroscope.He

    said,Itdoesnotmatter ifsomeonehad tried todiscover

    embryology fourteencenturiesago.Theycouldnothave

    seenit!

    Allofthedescriptionsin theQuranoftheappearanceof

    theembryoareoftheitemwhenitisstilltoosmalltosee

    withthe

    eye;

    therefore,

    one

    needs

    amicroscope

    to

    see

    it.

    Sincesuchadevicehadonlybeenaround for littlemore

    than two hundred years, Dr. Moore taunted, Maybe

    fourteencenturiesagosomeonesecretlyhadamicroscope

    and did this research, making no mistakes anywhere.

    ThenhesomehowtaughtMuhammad()andconvinced

    himto

    put

    this

    information

    in

    his

    book.

    Then

    he

    destroyed

    hisequipmentandkeptitasecretforever.Doyoubelieve

    that?Youreallyshouldnotunlessyoubringsomeproof

    because it is such a ridiculous theory. In fact,whenhe

    wasasked,Howdoyouexplain this information in the

    Quran?Dr.Mooresreplywas,Itcouldonlyhavebeen

    divinely

    revealed!

    Geology

    One of ProfessorMoores colleagues,MarshallJohnson,

    dealsextensivelywithgeologyattheUniversityofToronto.

    Hebecame very interested in the fact that theQurans

    statements

    about

    embryology

    are

    accurate,

    and

    so

    he

    asked Muslims to collect everything contained in the

    Quranwhichdealswithhisspecialty.Againpeoplewere

    very surprised at the findings. Since there are a vast

    numbersubjectsdiscussedintheQuran,itwouldcertainly

    requirealargeamountoftimetoexhausteachsubject.It

    suffices

    for

    the

    purpose

    of

    this

    discussion

    to

    state

    that

    the

    Quran makes very clear and concise statements about

    varioussubjectswhilesimultaneouslyadvisingthereader

    toverifytheauthenticityofthesestatementswithresearch

    by scholars in those subjects.And as illustratedby the

    previousexamplesofembryologyandgeology,theQuran

    hasclearlyemergedauthentic.

    This

    Before!

    Undoubtedly, there isanattitude in theQuranwhich is

    not foundanywhereelse. It is interestinghowwhen the

    Quranprovidesinformation,itoftentellsthereader,You

    did

    not

    know

    this

    before.

    Indeed,

    there

    is

    no

    scripture

    thatexistswhichmakesthatclaim.Alloftheotherancient

    writingsandscriptures thatpeoplehavedogivea lotof

    information,buttheyalwaysstatewheretheinformation

    camefrom.

    Forexample,whentheBiblediscussesancienthistory,it

    statesthat

    this

    king

    lived

    here,

    this

    one

    fought

    in

    acertain

    battle, another one had somay sons, etc.Yet it always

    stipulates that if youwantmore information, then you

    shouldread thebookofsoandsobecausethatiswhere

    theinformationcamefrom.Incontrasttothisconcept,the

    Quran provides the reader with information and states

    thatthis

    information

    is

    something

    new.

    Of

    course,

    there

    always exists the advice to research the information

    providedandverify itsauthenticity.Itis interesting that

    such a concept was never challenged by nonMuslims

    fourteen centuriesago. Indeed, theMakkanswhohated

    theMuslims, and time and time again they heard such

    revelations

    claiming

    to

    bring

    new

    information;

    yet,

    they

    never spoke up and said, This is not new.We know

    whereMuhammadgotthis information.Welearned this

    They

    could

    never

    challenge

    its

    authenticity

    becauseitreallywasnew!

    Proofof

    Authenticity:

    An

    Approach

    ItmustbestressedherethattheQuran isaccurateabout

    many, many things,but accuracy does not necessarily

    meanthatabookisadivinerevelation.Infact,accuracyis

    only

    one

    of

    the

    criteria

    for

    divine

    revelations.

    For

    instance,

    thetelephonebookisaccurate,butthatdoesnotmeanthat

    it isdivinely revealed.Therealproblem lies in thatone

    must establish some proof of the source the Qurans

    information.Theemphasisisintheotherdirection,inthat

    theburdenofproof ison thereader.Onecannotsimply

    deny

    the

    Qurans

    authenticity

    without

    sufficient

    proof.

    If,

    indeed, one finds a mistake, then he has the right to

    disqualifyit.ThisisexactlywhattheQuranencourages.

    Onceamancameup tomeaftera lectureIdelivered in

    SouthAfrica.HewasveryangryaboutwhatIhadsaid,

    and soheclaimed,I amgoing togohome tonightand

    findamistake

    in

    the

    Quran.

    Of

    course,

    Isaid,

    Congratulations.That is themost intelligent thing that

    youhavesaid.Certainly, this is theapproachMuslims

    need to take with those who doubt the Qurans

    authenticity, because the Quran itself offers the same

    challenge.And inevitably, after accepting its challenge

    and

    discovering

    that

    it

    is

    true,

    these

    people

    will

    come

    to

    believeitbecausetheycouldnotdisqualify it.Inessence,

    the Quran earns their respectbecause they themselves

    havehad

    to

    verify

    its

    authenticity.

    An essential fact that cannot be reiterated enough

    concerning the authenticity of the Quran is that ones

    inability to explain a phenomenon himself does not

    requirehisacceptanceof thephenomenonsexistenceor

    another persons explanation of it. Specifically, just

    becauseone

    cannot

    explain

    something

    does

    not

    mean

    that

    onehas to accept someone elses explanation.However,

    the persons refusal of other explanations reverts the

    burdenofproofbackonhimselftofindafeasibleanswer.

    Thisgeneraltheoryappliestonumerousconcepts in life,

    butfitsmostwonderfullywiththeQuranicchallenge,for

    itcreates

    adifficulty

    for

    one

    who

    says,

    I

    do

    not

    believe

    it.

    Attheonsetofrefusaloneimmediatelyhasanobligation

    tofindanexplanationhimself ifhefeelsothersanswers

    areinadequate.

    In fact, in one particular Quranic verse which I have

    informationand

    decide

    what

    is

    garbage

    to

    be

    thrown

    out

    and what is worthwhile information to be kept and

    benefitedfromimmediatelyorevenatalaterdate.

    Onecannot

    just

    let

    it

    rattle

    around

    in

    his

    head.

    It

    must

    be

    put in theproper categories and approached from that

    point of view. For example, if the information is still

    speculatory, thenonemustdiscernwhether itscloser to

    beingtrueorfalse.Butifallthefactshavebeenpresented,

    then one must decide absolutely between these two

    options.And

    even

    if

    one

    is

    not

    positive

    about

    the

    authenticity of the information, he is still required to

    processall the informationandmaketheadmission that

    hejustdoesnotknow for sure.Although this lastpoint

    appears tobe futile, in actuality, it isbeneficial to the

    arrival at a positive conclusion at a later time in that it

    forces

    the

    person

    to

    at

    least

    recognize

    research

    and

    review

    thefacts.

    Thisfamiliaritywiththeinformationwillgivetheperson

    the edge when future discoveries are made and

    additional information ispresented.Theimportantthing

    isthatonedealswiththefactsanddoesnotsimplydiscard

    themout

    of

    empathy

    and

    disinterest.

    Exhaustingthe

    Alternatives

    Therealcertainty about the truthfulnessof theQuran is

    evidentintheconfidencewhichisprevalentthroughoutit;

    and this confidence comes from a different approach

    Exhausting

    alternatives.

    In

    essence,

    the

    Quran

    states,

    Thisbookisadivinerevelation;ifyoudonotbelievethat,

    thenwhatisit?Inotherwords,thereader ischallenged

    tocomeupwith someotherexplanation.Here isabook

    madeofpaperandink.Wherediditcomefrom?Itsaysit

    isadivinerevelation;if it isnot,thenwhatis itssource?

    The

    interesting

    fact

    is

    that

    no

    one

    has

    yet

    come

    up

    with

    an

    explanation thatworks. In fact,allalternativeshavebee

    exhausted.AshasbeenwellestablishedbynonMuslims,

    these alternativesbasically are reduced to twomutually

    exclusiveschoolsofthought,insistingononeortheother.

    On onehand, there exists a largegroup ofpeoplewho

    haveresearched

    the

    Quran

    for

    hundreds

    of

    years

    and

    who claim, One thing we know for sure that man,

    Muhammad (), thought he was a prophet. He was

    crazy! They are convinced that Muhammad () was

    fooledsomehow.Thenontheotherhand,thereisagroup

    which alleges, Because of this evidence, one thing we

    knowfor

    sure

    is

    that

    that

    man,

    Muhammad

    ()

    was

    aliar! Ironically, these two groups never seem to get

    togetherwithoutcontradicting.

    both

    theories.They startoutby stating thatMuhammad ()

    Trail

    As amatter of fact, a greatdeal of theQuran came in

    answertoquestions.SomeonewouldaskMuhammad()

    a question, and the revelation would come with the

    answer

    to

    it.

    Certainly,

    if

    one

    is

    crazy

    and

    believes

    that

    an

    angelputwordsinhisear,thenwhensomeoneaskshima

    question, he thinks that the angel will give him the

    answer.Becauseheiscrazy,hereallythinksthat.Hedoes

    nottellsomeonetowaitashortwhileandthenruntohis

    friendsandask them,Doesanyoneknowtheanswer?

    This

    type

    of

    behavior

    is

    characteristic

    of

    one

    who

    does

    not

    believethatheisaprophet.WhatthenonMuslimsrefuse

    toacceptisthatyoucannothaveitbothways.Onecanbe

    deluded,orhecanbealiar.Hecanbreitheroneorneither

    one,buthecertainlycannotbeboth!Theemphasis ison

    the fact thatthey areunquestionablymutually exclusive

    personalitytraits.

    The following scenario isagoodexampleof thekindof

    circle thatnonMuslimsgoaround in constantly. If you

    askoneof them,What is theoriginof theQuran?He

    tellsyou that itoriginated from themindofamanwho

    wascrazy.Thenyouaskhim,If itcamefromhishead,

    then

    where

    did

    he

    get

    the

    information

    contained

    in

    it?

    Certainly theQuranmentionsmany thingswithwhich

    theArabswerenot familiar.So inorder toexplain the

    you

    bring

    him,

    he

    changes

    his

    position

    and

    says, Well, maybe he was not crazy. Maybe some

    toaskhim,IfMuhammadwasaliar,thenwheredidhe

    get his confidence? Why did hebehave as though he

    reallythought

    he

    was

    aprophet?

    Finally

    backed

    into

    acorner, like a cat he quickly lashes out with the first

    response that comes tohismind.Forgetting thathehas

    already exhausted that possibility, he claims, Well,

    maybehewasntaliar.Hewasprobablycrazyandreally

    thoughtthathewasaprophet.And thushebeginsthe

    futile

    cycle

    again.

    Ashasalreadybeenmentioned,thereismuchinformation

    containedintheQuranwhosesourcecannotbeattributed

    to anyone other than Allah. For example, who told

    Muhammad()aboutthewallofDhulQarnayn aplace

    hundreds of miles to the north? Who told him about

    embryology?When

    people

    assemble

    facts

    such

    as

    these,

    if

    theyarenotwillingtoattributetheirexistencetoadivine

    source, they automatically resort to the assumption

    someonebroughtMuhammad () the information and

    thatheusedittofoolthepeople.

    However, this theory can easilybedisprovedwith one

    simplequestion:

    was

    where

    did

    hegethis confidence?Whydidhe tell somepeopleout

    Lahab

    ProphetMuhammad () had an uncleby the name of

    AbuLahab.ThismanhatedIslamtosuchanextentthat

    heusedtofollowtheProphetaroundinordertodiscredit

    him.

    If

    Abu

    Lahab

    saw

    the

    Prophet

    ()

    speaking

    to

    a

    stranger,hewouldwaituntiltheypartedandthewould

    gotothestrangerandaskhim,Whatdidhetellyou?Did

    he say, Black?Well, itswhite.Did he say morning?

    Well, itsnight.He faithfully said theexactoppositeof

    whateverheheardMuhammad()andtheMuslimssay.

    However,

    about

    ten

    years

    before

    Abu

    Lahab

    died,

    a

    little

    chapter in theQuran (SurahalLahab,111)wasrevealed

    abouthim.Itdistinctlystatedthathewouldgotothefire

    (i.e.,Hell).Inotherwords,itaffirmedthathewouldnever

    become a Muslim and would thereforebe condemned

    forever.FortenyearsallAbuLahabhadtodowassay,I

    heardthatithasbeenrevealedtoMuhammadthatIwill

    neverchange thatIwillneverbecomeaMuslimandwillenter theHellfire.Well, Iwant tobecomeMuslim now.

    Howdoyoulikethat?Whatdoyouthinkofyourdivine

    revelationnow?Butheneverdid that.Andyet, that is

    exactly the kind ofbehavior onewould have expected

    fromhimsincehealwayssoughttocontradictIslam.

    Inessence,Muhammad ()said,Youhatemeandyou

    want to finish me? Here, say these words, and I am

    corner over thereand keep quiet.Yet, in fact,whathe

    saidtoAbuBakrclearlyillustratedhisconfidence.Hetold

    him, Relax!Allah iswith us, andAllahwill saveus!

    Now, if oneknows thathe is fooling thepeople,where

    doesonegetthiskindofattitude?Infact,suchaframeof

    mindisnotcharacteristicofaliaroraforgeratall.

    So,ashasbeenpreviouslymentioned, thenonMuslims

    goaroundandaroundinacircle,searchingforawayout

    someway toexplainthefindingsin theQuranwithout

    attributingthemtotheirpropersource.Ononehand,they

    tell

    you

    Monday,

    Wednesday

    and

    Friday,

    The

    man

    Bible, it was written by a man! In response to his

    three

    four

    minutes,

    related

    to

    himafewthingscontainedintheQuran.Afterjustthose

    threeorfourminutes,hecompletelychangedhisposition

    anddeclared,Youareright.Amandidnotwritethatbook.

    TheDevilwroteit!Indeed,possessingsuchanattitudeis

    veryunfortunate formanyreasons.Foronething,itisa

    very

    quick

    and

    cheap

    excuse.

    It

    is

    an

    instant

    exit

    out

    of

    an

    uncomfortablesituation.

    Asamatteroffact,thereisafamousstoryintheBiblethat

    mentionshowoneday someof theJewswerewitnesses

    when Jesus () raised aman from thedead.Theman

    hadbeendeadforfourdays,andwhenJesusarrived,he

    simplysaid,

    Get

    up!

    and

    the

    man

    arose

    and

    walked

    away. At such a sight, some of the Jews who were

    watchingsaiddisbelievingly,ThisistheDevil.TheDevil

    Now

    this

    story

    is

    rehearsed

    very

    often

    in

    churchesallovertheworld,andpeoplecrybigtearsover

    it,saying,Oh,ifIhadbeenthere,Iwouldnothavebeen

    as stupid as theJews! Yet, ironically, these people do

    exactlywhattheJewsdidwheninjustthreeminutesyou

    showthemonlyasmallpartoftheQuranandalltheycan

    sayis,

    Oh,

    the

    Devil

    did

    it.

    The

    devil

    wrote

    that

    book!

    Becausetheyaretrulybacked intoacornerandhaveno

    other viable answer, they resort to the quickest and

    cheapestexcuseavailable.

    of

    the

    Quran

    Anotherexampleofpeoplesuseof thisweakstancecan

    be found in theMakkans explanation of the source of

    Muhammads message. They used to say, The devils

    bring

    Muhammad

    that

    Quran!

    But

    just

    as

    with

    every

    suggestionmade,theQurangivestheanswer.Oneverse

    (SurahAlQalam68:5152)inparticularstates:

    Andtheysay,Surelyheispossessed[byjinn],but

    it [i.e., theQuran] is not except a reminder to the

    worlds.

    Thusit

    gives

    an

    argument

    in

    reply

    to

    such

    atheory.

    In

    fact,therearemanyarguments in theQuran in reply to

    the suggestion that devilsbroughtMuhammad () his

    message. For example, in the 26th chapter Allah ()

    clearlyaffirms:

    evil

    ones

    have

    brought

    it

    [i.e.,

    this

    revelation]

    down. It would neither be fitting for them, nor

    wouldtheybeable.Indeedtheyhavebeenremoved

    surprised as they areas tohow amazing it is, they still

    insist,

    PraisebetoAllah(),Muslimsdonothavethatattitude.

    AlthoughSatanmayhavesomeabilities,theyarea long

    wayseparatedfromtheabilitiesofAllah.AndnoMuslim

    is a Muslim unless he believes that. It is common

    knowledgeeven amongnonMuslims that theDevilcan

    easilymake

    mistakes,

    and

    it

    would

    be

    expected

    that

    he

    wouldcontradicthimselfifandwhenhewroteabook.For

    indeed,theQuranstates(SurahanNisa4:82):

    DotheynotconsidertheQuran?Had itbeenfrom

    other than Allah, they would surely have found

    thereinmuchdiscrepancy.

    Mythomania

    In conjunction with the excuses that nonMuslims

    advancein futileattemptstojustifyunexplainableverses

    intheQuran,thereisanotherattackoftenrenderedwhich

    seemstobeacombinationofthetheoriesthatMuhammad

    ()wascrazyanda liar.Basically,thesepeoplepropose

    thatMuhammad

    was

    insane,

    and

    as

    aresult

    of

    his

    delusion,heliedtoandmisledpeople.Thereisanamefor

    thisinpsychology.Itisreferredtoasmythomania.Itmeans

    simply thatone tells liesand thenbelieves them.This is

    whatthenonMuslimssayMuhammad()sufferedfrom.

    But the only problem with this proposal is that one

    sufferingfrom

    mythomania

    absolutely

    cannot

    deal

    with

    anyfacts,andyetthewholeQuranisbasedentirelyupon

    facts. Everything contained in it canbe researched and

    established as true.Since factsare such a problem for a

    mythomaniac, when a psychologist tries to treat one

    suffering from that condition, he continually confronts

    himwith

    facts.

    Forexample, ifone ismentally illandclaims,I am the

    kingofEngland,apsychologistdoesnotsaytohimNo

    you arent. You are crazy! Hejust does not do that.

    Rather,heconfrontshimwith factsandsays,O.K.,you

    say you are the king of England. So tellmewhere the

    queen is today.Andwhereisyourprimeminister?And

    whereareyourguards?Now,whenthemanhastrouble

    trying to deal with these questions, he tries to make

    Uh...

    TheQuran

    approaches

    everyone

    who

    reads

    whichstates:

    Omankind,therehascometoyouanadmonition

    [i.e., theQuran] from your Lord and a healing for

    what isin thehearts andguidanceandmercyfor

    thebelievers.

    At first glance, this statement appears vague, but the

    meaningofthisverseisclearwhenoneviewsitinlightof

    theaforementionedexample.Basically,oneishealedofhis

    delusions

    by

    reading

    the

    Quran.

    In

    essence,

    it

    is

    therapy.

    It

    literally curesdeludedpeopleby confronting themwith

    facts.A prevalent attitude throughout theQuran isone

    which says,Omankind,you say such and such about

    this;butwhataboutsuchandsuch?Howcanyousaythis

    when you know that? And so forth. It forces one to

    consider

    what

    is

    relevant

    and

    what

    matters

    while

    simultaneously healing one of the delusions that facts

    presented tomankindbyAllah can easilybe explained

    fact, there exists a very interesting reference concerning

    this

    subject

    in

    the

    New

    Catholic

    Encyclopedia.

    In

    an

    article

    underthesubjectoftheQuran,theCatholicChurchstates:

    Overthecenturies,manytheorieshavebeenoffered

    astotheoriginoftheQuran...Todaynosensibleman

    acceptsanyofthesetheories!!

    NowhereistheageoldCatholicChurch,whichhasbeen

    aroundfor

    so

    many

    centuries,

    denying

    these

    attemptstoexplainawaytheQuran.

    Indeed,theQuranisaproblemfortheCatholicChurch.It

    Quran isnotan easy subject todismiss.Certainly,other

    peoplearemuch lesshonest.Theyquickly say,Oh,the

    Qurancamefromhere.TheQurancamefromthere.And

    theydonotevenexaminethecredibilityofwhattheyare

    statingmostofthetime.

    the

    Catholic

    Church

    leaves

    theeverydayChristian in somedifficulty.Itjustmaybe

    uponhisowntheory.Suchanactionwouldbecontraryto

    the obedience, allegiance and loyaltywhich theChurch

    why are people so stubborn and defensive and hostile

    when Muslims advance the very same theory? This is

    Testimonyof

    an

    Intellectual

    Recently,theleadingintellectualintheCatholicChurch a

    manby thenameofHansstudiedtheQuranandgave

    his opinion of what he had read. This man has been

    around

    for

    some

    time,

    and

    he

    is

    highly

    respected

    in

    the

    CatholicChurch,and after careful scrutiny,he reported

    his findings, concluding, God has spoken to man

    throughtheman,Muhammad.

    Again this is a conclusion arrived atby a nonMuslim

    source the very leading intellectual of the Catholic

    Churchhimself!

    I do not think that the Pope agrees with him, but

    nonetheless, theopinionof suchanoted, reputedpublic

    figuremustcarry someweightindefenseof theMuslim

    position.Hemustbeapplaudedforfacingtherealitythat

    theQuran isnotsomethingwhich canbeeasilypushed

    asideand

    that,

    in

    fact

    God

    is

    the

    source

    of

    these

    words.

    finding another possibility of dismissing the Quran is

    Inreferencetothefalsificationtestsmentionedearlier,itis

    interestingtonotethatthey,too,relatetoboththepastand

    thepresent. Some of them were used as illustrations of

    Allahs

    omnipotenceand

    continue to stand as challenges to the present day.An

    exampleoftheformeristhestatementmadeintheQuran

    about Abu Lahab. It clearly illustrates that Allah, the

    KnoweroftheUnseen,knewthatAbuLahabwouldnever

    changehisways and accept Islam.ThusAllah dictated

    condemned

    to

    the

    Hellfire

    forever.

    Such

    a chapter was both an illustration of Allahs divine

    An interesting exampleof the latter type of falsification

    testscontained in theQuran istheversewhichmentions

    the relationship between theMuslims and the Jews.

    The

    verse

    is

    careful

    not

    to

    narrowits

    scope

    to

    the

    relationshipbetweenindividualmembersofeachreligion,

    butrather,itsummarizestherelationshipbetweenthetwo

    groupsofpeopleasawhole.Inessence,theQuranstates

    that theChristianswill always treat theMuslimsbetter

    than the Jews will treat the Muslims. Indeed, the full

    impact

    of

    such

    a

    statement

    can

    only

    be

    felt

    after

    careful

    considerationoftherealmeaningofsuchaverse.Itistrue

    that many Christians and many Jews have become

    Muslims,butasawhole,theJewish community is tobe

    viewedasanavidenemyofIslam.Additionally,veryfew

    peoplerealizewhatsuchanopendeclarationintheQuran

    invites. In essence, it is an easy chance for theJews to

    prove that the Quran is false that it is not a divine

    revelation.All they have to do is organize themselves,

    treat theMuslims nicely for a few years and then say,

    Nowwhatdoesyourholybooksayaboutwhoareyour

    bestfriendsintheworld theJewsortheChristians?Look

    whatweJewshavedoneforyou!

    That is all they have to do to disprove the Qurans

    authenticity,yettheyhavenotdoneitin1400years.But,

    byonetimeoutoftwoforthesecondsituation).

    Continuingonwiththeexample,ifthesamepersonnow

    hasthreesituationsinwhichtomakeblindguesses,then

    hewillonlyberightoneeighthofthetime(i.e.,onetime

    outofeightorxx).Again,theoddsofchoosingthe

    correctchoice

    in

    all

    three

    situations

    have

    decreased

    his

    chances ofbeing completely correct toonly one time in

    eight. It must be understood that as the number of

    situationsincrease,thechancesofbeingrightdecrease,for

    thetwophenomenaareinverselyproportional.

    NowapplyingthisexampletothesituationsintheQuran,

    ifonedrawsupalistofallofthesubjectsaboutwhichthe

    Quranhasmadecorrectstatements,itbecomesveryclear

    that it is highly unlikely that they were alljust correct

    the

    Quran

    each timeitisright,then itisunlikely thatsomeonewas

    guessing.

    In the16th chapter (Surah anNahl16:6869) theQuran

    Now,apersonmightguessonthat,saying,Thebeethat

    male,

    or

    it

    could

    be

    female.IthinkIwillguessfemale.Certainly,hehasaone

    intwochanceofbeingright.SoithappensthattheQuran

    isright.Butitalsohappensthatthatwasnotwhatmost

    peoplebelievedatthetimewhentheQuranwasrevealed.

    Canyou tellthedifferencebetweenamaleanda female

    bee?

    Well,

    it

    takes

    a

    specialist

    to

    do

    that,

    but

    it

    has

    been

    discovered that themalebee never leaves his home to

    gather food.However, in Shakespearesplay,Henry the

    Fourth,someof thecharactersdiscussbeesandmention

    that thebeesaresoldiersandhaveaking.That iswhat

    peoplethoughtin

    Shakespearestime

    that

    the

    bees

    that

    one

    sees

    flying

    aroundaremalebeesandthattheygohomeandanswer

    toaking.However,thatisnottrueatall.Thefactisthat

    theyarefemales,andtheyanswertoaqueen.Yetittook

    modern scientific investigations in the last 300 years to

    discoverthatthisisthecase.

    So,back

    to

    the

    list

    of

    good

    guesses,

    concerning

    the

    topic

    of

    bees,theQuranhada50/50chanceofbeingright,andthe

    oddswereoneintwo.

    Inadditiontothesubjectofbees,theQuranalsodiscusses

    thesunandthemannerinwhichittravelsthroughspace.

    Again,apersoncanguesson thatsubject.When thesun

    moves

    through

    space,

    there

    are

    two

    options:

    it

    can

    travel

    justasastonewouldtravelifonethrewit,oritcanmove

    of its own accord. TheQuran states the latter that it

    moves as a result of its own motion (Surah alAnbiya

    21:33).Todo such, theQuran uses a form of theword

    sabaha todescribethesunsmovementthroughspace.In

    order

    to

    properly

    provide

    the

    reader

    with

    a

    comprehensiveunderstandingof the implicationsof this

    Arabicverb,thefollowingexampleisgiven.

    If aman is in water and the verb sabaha is applied in

    referencetohismovement,itcanbeunderstoodthatheis

    swimming,movingofhisownaccordandnotasaresult

    ofadirect

    force

    applied

    to

    him.

    Thus

    when

    this

    verb

    is

    usedinreferencetothesunsmovementthroughspace,it

    in noway implies that the sun is flying uncontrollably

    through spaceasa resultofbeing hurled or the like. It

    simplymeans that the sun is turning and rotating as it

    travels.Now,thisiswhattheQuranaffirms,butwasitan

    easything

    to

    discover?

    Can

    any

    common

    man

    tell

    that

    the

    sunisturning?Onlyinmoderntimeswastheequipment

    made available to project the image of the sun onto a

    And throughthisprocessitwasdiscoveredthatnotonly

    ofthesunarounditsaxisandconclusivelyprovesthat,as

    theQuran stated 1400 years ago, the sun does, indeed,

    turnas

    travels

    space.

    Andreturningonceagaintothesubjectofgoodguesses,

    theoddsofguessingcorrectlyaboutbothsubjects thesex

    ofbeesandthemovementofthesun areoneinfour!

    Seeingasbackfourteencenturiesagopeopleprobablydid

    not understand much about time zones, the Qurans

    statementsaboutthissubjectareconsiderablysurprising.

    The

    concept

    that

    onefamily

    is

    having

    breakfast

    as

    the

    sun

    comesupwhileanotherfamilyisenjoyingthebrisknight

    air istrulysomething tobemarveledat,even inmodern

    time. Indeed, fourteen centuries ago, a man could not

    travelmorethanthirtymilesinoneday,andthusittook

    him literallymonths totravel from India toMorocco,for

    example.

    And

    probably,

    when

    he

    was

    having

    supper

    in

    Morocco,hethoughttohimself,BackhomeinIndiathey

    arehavingsupperrightnow.Thisisbecausehedidnot

    realizethat,intheprocessoftraveling,hemovedacrossa

    timezone.Yet,because it is thewordsofAllah, theAll

    Knowing,theQuranrecognizesandacknowledgessucha

    phenomenon.

    Inaninterestingverseitstatesthatwhenhistorycomesto

    anendandtheDayofJudgmentarrives,itwillalloccurin

    aninstant;andthisveryinstantwillcatchsomepeoplein

    the daytime and some people at night. This clearly

    illustrates Allahs divine wisdom and His previous

    knowledgeof

    the

    existence

    of

    time

    zones,

    even

    though

    suchadiscoverywasnonexistentbackfourteencenturies

    ago.Certainly,thisphenomenonisnotsomethingwhichis

    guessed correctly about all three of the aforementioned

    subjects

    sun

    the

    Certainly, one could continue on and on with this

    example, drawing up longer and longer list of good

    guesses;andofcourse,theoddswouldbecomehigherand

    higher with each increase of subjects about which one

    couldguess.

    But

    what

    no

    one

    can

    deny

    is

    the

    following:

    the odds that Muhammad (), an illiterate, guessed

    correctly about thousands and thousands of subjects,

    neveroncemakingamistake,aresohighthatanytheory

    of his authorship of the Quran must be completely

    dismissed evenbythemosthostileenemiesofIslam!

    Indeed,the

    Quran

    expects

    this

    kind

    of

    challenge.

    Undoubtedly, if one said to someone upon entering a

    foreign land, I know your father. I have met him,

    probably the man from that land would doubt the

    newcomersword,saying,Youhavejustcomehere.How

    could you know my father? As a result, he would

    questionhim,

    Tell

    me,

    is

    my

    father

    tall,

    short,

    dark,

    fair?

    What is he like? Of course, if the visitor continued

    answeringallofthequestionscorrectly,theskepticwould
