Have you been over to Franklin in the recent weeks? If so, you would have seen all the office trailers moved from the west to the east side of the project. Front Entrance renovations include removal of the turnaround. The flagpole and Veterans’ Memorial will be positioned near these front doors. Inside, two imposing new grand staircases sweep to the side, turn, then rise to the second floor.

Above left: The Franklin statue has been relocated clos-er to the action on the track and football field. Above

right: The 50 foot high arch ceiling in the much beloved old auditorium has been restored. A few of the old

chair sections were salvaged and reinstalled upstairs. Downstairs, the floor has been leveled for the Media

Center (library) and computer lab. Lower right: Here you can see the existing century old classroom wing on the left and the exterior of the new CTE/Maker Wing on

the right. One complements the other.

Ben’s Birthday Breakfast Partyby April (Whitley ’67) Avery

In the spirit of hospitality, tradition, and appreciation, the FHS Alumni Association provided an early morning light breakfast for Franklin’s teachers and staff, featuring a buffet of fruit, pastries, juice and coffee in the front office. FHSAA greeters: Terrie Bollinger, Bev Entriken, Joyce Gago, April Avery and Janette Sprando, provided teachers some nourishment and down time before they began their day with students. April added, “I enjoyed every minute, thinking how blessed we are for each person involved in the community of Franklin High School.“

I am for doing good to the poor, but I differ in opinion about the means. I think the best way of doing good to the poor is not making them easy in poverty, but

leading or driving them out of it.

— Benjamin Franklin

Holiday gatherings bring good friends together again

Spring 2017 The Alumni Post 5

Hear Ye, Hear Ye! Calling all Franklin High School Alums! You are appreciated, and you are needed!April (Whitley) Avery, 1967

I asked a few of our Board Members, “What do you like about being a member of the FHSAA?” Bev Entrikin said, “I like that we are friends.” She added, “We grew up together, lived in the same neighborhood, and took care of each other.” Joyce Gago said, “The reason we have a close-knit Alumni Association, is the members.” Janette Sprando said, “We care about one another, as well as our mission to support the high school.” Terrie Bollinger agreed, and added: “Keeping connected is a very good thing, especially when we are working on our 50th reunion!” Garry Lee’s comment was, “There is strength in numbers. A few dollars from each of us creates a pool of money from which we can offer real support to the present Franklin students, teachers and programs, including curriculum, sport and vocational.

In addition to alumni, Franklin also enjoys great community support. One example is the raffles we hold at the annual Alumni Oaks Park picnic. Franklin area businesses donate prizes, even though owners may not have attended FHS, because they believe in supporting the high school community. Also, there were a lot of donations to the recent Buy-a-Brick fundraiser by neighbors who live near the school.

The Mission Statement of the Alumni Association is: “To establish ongoing alumni interest and financial support for the pursuit of educational excellence at Franklin High School.”

The purposes of the Association include: 1) to promote and further the development of Franklin High School; 2) to locate alumni of FHS, and encourage their support of FHS; 3) to receive, spend, and use funds and other property for charitable, scientific, and educational activities for the benefit of FHS; 4) to conduct, supervise and assist in fund-raising campaigns for FHS.

If you see value in these purposes, we encourage you to come join the Alumni Association. Don’t let another year go by. Act today! Membership supports the publication of The Alumni Post twice each year. Our Alumni Post is sent to everyone for whom we have current e-mail or mailing address. However, that in itself does not make you an Alumni Association member. You are receiving the Post as a gift, in hopes you will join us by completing and returning the membership form with your $15.00 annual dues donation. FHSAA is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Contributions are tax deductible to the extent permitted by law.

In an ongoing effort to meet student needs, Franklin High has developed a new elective option focused on food choice and preparation to help youth become self-sufficient as adults. Culinary Arts will also be a training program for those students who hope for a job or a career in the food and hospitality industry. The Culinary Arts program, headed by Teacher Steve O’Neil is currently in its second year and will continue to develop its curriculum into a four-year program. Last year, 170 students participated. This year, nearly 400 students forecasted for the program but due to space and class size limitations, only 165 students could be accepted.

Obviously, students and their families see value in this program, plenty of reason for Culinary Arts to expand in the future. First year students learn the basics of cooking for self and family, preparing meals from scratch, learning nutrition and food safety. At the end of the year each student will have earned their Food Handlers’ Card. Second year students continue to hone cooking skills, and begin to learn about work and career opportunities in the food and hospitality industry. A brand new kitchen, the envy of any restaurant, has been built for the program in the new Sports Complex. Plans for the third and fourth year classes will focus on the business side of food. Students will create a pretzel business and eventually a catering company as funding sources for the program. According to

Teacher O’Neil, annual income of $12,000 would continue to keep the program fully functioning. Students will focus on production, promotion and marketing. After four years in the program, students will be qualified to work as a line cook, continue their education at a chef’s school or manage a small business . Next Sept 2, at the Open House for the new Franklin High, the Alumni Association will sponsor a breakfast for Alumni. The Culinary Arts program has been hired as the caterer. Students will prepare and cook all the food served, bus tables, and perform all the front and back house duties of a caterer. All profits of the breakfast will be donated to the program. More details about the Alumni Association Pancake Breakfast can be found on page 4.

Franklin has a new Culinary Arts program

Buy-a-Brick DonorsThere are over 1,600 donors, too many to print in one edition of the Alumni Post. Half of the list is printed here, the other half will be published in the Fall Edition (at about the same time that Franklin re-opens.) Names are published here for those who don’t live near Portland and may not have an opportunity to visit the campus and see the Donors’ Plaques on display in the new Sports Complex.

Franklin Students in Good Standing by Albert Drake, ‘53

No doubt some things have changed at Franklin in 65 years but when I was a student there (1949-’53) guys knew where they stood. And where they stood indicated something about their status.

The “boomer boys” stood in the main hall, at the confluence of the hall and stairs, a place where they could see everyone and be seen. The athletes wore their letterman sweaters. Others might wear a white T-shirt with the name of a social club --Illuminati, Quakers, Optimists -- the best clubs. Guys laughed and joked, checked out girl students and flexed their muscles. Others did not intrude. The Doghouse, directly south of Franklin’s main entrance, on the corner of 54th, was a more democratic place; anyone could enter. It was a house (still there) converted into a café. Students crowded in at lunch time to buy a hamburger or hot dog and perhaps a Coke. It was famous for its chili and pie and had a rocking juke box. Since the Doghouse had almost no seating, the overflow crowd spilled onto the sidewalk. Boys and girls laughed and talked and ate lunch together standing up. I stood in another bunch that gathered at a small grocery store on 52nd and Woodward. We were the “greasers” and “losers” although neither term was used back then. Some of us were the not-so-good students who lived for cars. For some reason it was okay to smoke here, and quite a few did. I didn’t, but I’d go into the store and buy my lunch: a quart of milk and a package of Sno-Balls, a pink one and a white one, with chocolate cake inside and marshmallow centers. Then I’d stand on the sidewalk in the smoke, eating lunch and looking at cars. At least I knew where I stood in the school’s hierarchy.

To succeed, jump at as many opportunities as you do

conclusions.

Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy

and wise.

Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me

and I learn. An investment in knowledge

pays the best interest. We are all born ignorant, but

one must work hard to remain stupid.

It takes many good deeds to build a good reputation, and only one bad one to lose it.

In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death

and taxes.

— Benjamin Franklin

The new Sports Complex anchors the north end of the campus. Here we see the new brick panels on the exterior, funded by the Buy-a-Brick campaign, which raised over $125,000.00 to retain the iconic Franklin red brick façade on this new building.

“I loved reading the 2016 Fall Alumni Post. Thank you for all of the information about how the construction is going on the New Franklin. I loved seeing all of the pictures and reading the well written articles. Thank you all involved.” Judith (Judy) (Nielsen) Cramton class of 1961. Editor: Now the project changes from “construction” to “finishing touches.”

From Ted Anderson, Class of 1950. Mr. Devlin was an incredible Civics Teacher and Counselor in the 1940’s. He mentored me and inspired me to accomplish more than I thought possible.

Richard Christman, Class of 1962 wrote, “This FHS Alumni Post is the greatest paper I have ever seen put out for high school alumni. Thank You!”

Editor: Thanks Richard. We framed your comment.

Marcia (Kleinschmidt) Todd, Class of 1938 writes to say that she lived in the Washington High School District and sneaked over to Franklin because she thought it was a lovely looking place. She was caught in her Sophmore year, but they let her stay.

Editor: My Uncle Goody, Class of ’47 did the same thing, only he registered for Cleveland. It worked for a while until his parents started checking signatures, that is.

Ray Donnell, Class of 1963 says, “Thanks! I value the Alumni Post very much.” Editor: You’re welcome. Thanks for the support.

“I firmly believe the fine teachers and positive environment for learning at Franklin prepared me well. Also, I enjoyed my classmate Don Driscoll’s article on clothing from our era in the last Alumni Post. I remember shoes, too, saving a portion of my annual school clothes allowance for the shoes that were in favor that year,” writes Gloria (Carmichael) Morris, Class of 1946.

Pat (Doran) Lengvenis, Class of 1951 would be happy to volunteer if she lived closer. Secretary: we wish you lived closer; we would love the help!

“How I would love to volunteer. I will try for Homecoming next year. Keep up the good work.” Sherley Kaye (Cram) Schoeneman, Class of 1947. Editor: 1947 was a very good year. Ha!

Honored Sir, With AppreciationDistinguished Franklin alum James R. Wachob, continues his decade-long series of substantial donations back to Franklin through the Alumni Association. In a previous letter, he made it clear that his motivation was an abiding appreciation for the head start in life he had received from his high school teachers. Thank you, Mr. Wachob, Class of 1945

Quakers To Hold Commencement

Exercises At ColiseumCommencement exercises for approximately 510 Franklin seniors

will be held at 8:00 the evening of May 31 at the Memorial Coliseum. The ceremony will last about two hours, and will include musical entertainment, various speakers, and the presentation of diplomas and awards.

The Senior Choir, directed by Mr. John Peery, will present “Mountains.” The Melodeens, senior girls’ ensemble, will sing “There is Sweet Music Here,” accompanied by Mary Ann Rohler. Harold Poujade, soloist, will sing “The Impossible Dream,” accompanied by Sheryl Bartel. Organist will be Mrs. James Culver.

Dr. Laurence E. Winters, Assistant Superintendent, Portland Public Schools, will give the greeting. Students Rick McNerney and Gary Scheuerman will speak on the theme,“The Choice is Yours.” Senior class presidents Scott Shankland and Mike Nakata will lead the flag salute and give the welcome. Principal Arthur Westcott will present the diplomas and awards, and announce scholarship winners.

Junior class student leaders have been invited to usher at the commencement exercises. They were selected by administrators and counselors. Mr. Len Gehrke, FHS science teacher, will supervise the ushering.

Programs are being printed by the School District Print Shop, and are paid for out of Franklin’s supply budget, according to Mrs. Lorraine Miller, head secretary.

Franklin and Jefferson have the distinction of being the first schools in the city to graduate. Jefferson’s commencement will be held at Benson High School.

Attendance will not be limited this year and each senior may invite as many guests as they wish.

Alumni Association Supports Franklinby Lucille (Cole) Davis, 1950 Treasurer

Expenditures of Alumni donations during 2016 were fewer, yet larger. FHSAA financed the purchase of new equipment for the Metal Arts shop for $7,500. We also contributed $18,000.00 to add seating in the new stadium. Alumni are invited to sit in the maroon seats any time they attend a game or track meet in the stadium.

Also, the Board approved $10,000,00 for replacement track equipment (hurdles, high jump pit and pole vault pit and related accessories) not covered by the Construction Bond, nor the PPS budget. Go Quakers!

Want to Represent Your Class?Judy Orem, Data Base Secretary

The FHS Alumni Board is looking for representatives from each class, especially in the years from 1969 to the present. The Data Base Secretary would like your assistance in updating our rolls. The Alumni Association database can help you reach classmates for Reunions and send them the Alumni Post twice each year. E-mail us at [email protected] or call our Message Line 503.972.3396. We appreciate your help. Go Quakers!

Old Posts and Almanacs Yield History of Franklinby Stu Johnson, ‘50

I wish everyone who has an interest in Franklin High could have the opportunity to browse through the many aged yearbooks we steward in our archives room at the school. There are also hundreds of copies of vintage school newspapers.

There is so much that’s long been forgotten, but comes to light for those who have invested in becoming an Alumni Board Member and have access to our library.

The oldest year book that we have in our collection called the POST dates back to 1916 and is comprised of forty pages and measures six inches wide and nine inches tall. It’s titled January 1916, Vol. 2, so obviously there was at least one predecessor. Most alumni are familiar with “The POST” which we recognize as both the school newspaper and “The ALMANAC” which chronicled the administration, teachers, students, sports, clubs, activities and highlights the events of a particular school year. But did you know that the school newspaper was originally titled “SCHOOL DAZE” (established and first published May 15, 1922) and was published weekly? The money made from sales was used to buy English and history books for the library. All of this changed in 1930 when «THE POST» was adapted as the bannerhead for the newspaper, ditching “SCHOOL DAZE” and yearbooks previously called “The Post” were subsequently and to this day called “ The ALMANAC”, as in Poor Richard’s Almanac, which is another story in itself.

1930 was also the first year that Rose Festival princesses were exclusively selected from the eight Portland public high schools, and unlike today were chosen by student vote. Franklin’s selection from a student body of 1,800 that year was Princess Kathleen Sanders. The ALMANAC describes her as a “Tall, slender, titan blonde.” To the surprise of many, the Festival Committee announced that selection of the Queen would be made by the contestants themselves. Ballots were given to the eight princesses and the Princess from Lincoln High was chosen Queen. I don’t know how Franklin ‘s choice was overlooked ......she was an absolute beauty as the “ALMANAC” portrait attests. HERE’S WHAT YOU CAN DO !

The FHS Alumni Association maintains an archive of various historical items at the school.

We are continually seeking donations of old ALMANAC’S, POSTS and other memorabilia that often lie forgotten in basements, attics or elsewhere. Should any of you have such bygone publications that you’ve stowed away or inherited from a relative and would like to see them protected or even used, please let us know. Donations can be mailed or taken to Franklin High School in care of Joyce Gago, class of ‘54 at the front desk. Thank you.

Each summer, the FHS Alumni Association hosts a picnic at Oaks Park. This year it will be held on July 14, from 11:00 – 2::00 PM. It’s about catching up with old friends and classmates, a picnic lunch and seeing some vintage cars. Read on for a few tidbits of history about the park. “The Oaks” or “Oaks Park” as we know it, celebrated 100 years of continuous operation in 2005, making it among the oldest in the US.

The opening of the park was timed to accompany the 1905 Lewis and Clark Centennial Expo. It was built by the Oregon Water Power and Railway Company and opened on May 30, 1905 during a period when trolley parks were often constructed along streetcar lines.

Attendance averaged 300,000 visitors annually during its first decade of existence.

The earliest, most popular rides were the Chute the Chutes, a chute ride that whisked the riders down a steep incline plunging into a small man-made lake; the Barrel of Fun, a funhouse which included screaming skeletons, mazes of mirrors, and dark dead-end hallways; and the Mystic River Ride, a boat ride that traveled through darkened tunnels.

Famous acts from around the world, who performed at Oaks included the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the John Philip Sousa Marching Band.

The 1948 Vanport flood submerged Oaks Park for thirty days, killing a third of the bluff’s oak trees, warping most of the rides, and resulting in serious damage to the skating rink. The damage prompted the owners to rebuild the rink floor on airtight iron barrels, which would float in the event of another flood. The

floats worked as planned during the area’s Christmas flood of 1964 and the Willamette Valley Flood of 1996.

Three steam locomotives were kept at Oaks Park for many years, then moved to the Oregon Rail Heritage Center in 2012.

You will find a registration form in this newsletter. Cut it out, fill it in, and send with your check for $20.00 per person to the address on the bottom by May 31st. Mark your calendar and be there with us on July 14th. Let’s picnic! Go Quakers!
