the th HOLE January - February 2018 FOR THE MEMBERS OF STONO FERRY & THE PLANTATION COURSE 19 Resolution to play more golf? Determined to be better physically in 2018? Some people make resolutions with a smile on their face, and others like me do them with a feeling of reserve and dread. But in the end, the resolu- tions are made because the way things are currently be- ing done is not satisfactory to our needs or desires. So as we enter into the iffy weather of January and February, the amenities being offered at the club allow you to come every day. Cold, wet, and windy weather sounds like a great time to address those fitness needs. If you want to be serious about achieving those physical goals contact Scott Woolard of Compass Fitness (252-413-8533) (scott@com- passfitnesscharleston.com), and he can set up either group or one on one training to help you achieve the goals you have in mind. When the warm and dry days arrive, you have access to two beautiful golf courses where you can test your game and have fun with friends and family. Updates at the course include the long awaited bunker project for The Links at Stono Ferry. The time line is to be- gin work the end of January, and complete the work by the end of February. Weather and material availability play a big part in our timeline. The goal is to have all of the bunkers repaired and playable for the beautiful spring time tempera- tures. Curt Sheffer and his staff at the Plantation Course continue to do off season improvements to the areas adja- cent to both course restrooms as well as numerous drain- age projects. Many of you have seen the maintenance staff at Stono draining down the ponds on holes 1 and 2. It is being done in an effort to uncover a pipe that connects the two ponds. Knowledge of the existence of the pipe was not known until one day when the pond on two was half empty and the one on hole one was overflowing. Once the pipe is uncovered it will be capped, and the ponds on holes one and two will be refilled. Both courses have adopted a new point of sale system for checking in players and maintaining member accounts. Many of you received emails from Tee Snap, our point of sale provider, with your member statements. Please re- member statements will no longer go out via US Mail. They will be sent via email. In the rare case you do not use email or the internet please contact me and we will make ar- rangements for a paper statement. Thank you for your patience as we continue to work out the ins and outs of the new point of sale system. I also want to thank you again for your continued support of our staff and the courses as we go forward into the new year. From the Desk of the General Manager Greg Wood

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! I hope every-one had a great holiday season and is looking forward to the upcoming year. I want to take this opportunity to recap some of the highlights from 2017. First, the year started out with all of the tree work being finished up from Hurricane Matthew and landscaping around our new gym. Second, in mid-April we started adding irrigation heads and estab-lished over an acre of new grass in areas affected the most from Mat-thew. Third, we had our smoothest transition from winter grass back to summer grass. Also, turf conditions were the most consistent this year than any other year.

Goals for 2018 are to improve upon 2017 such as more consistent greens, and continued development of employees. As for the months of January and February we will be fo-cusing our efforts on pruning trees, continuing to pick up falling leaves, and maintaining winter grass will be our top priorities.

Your comments are always much appreciated, please continue with your feedback, so we can continue to get better with our day to day operations. Thank you for creat-ing many bright spots for my crew and myself this past year with your praise and appreciation for our ef-forts in maintaining your golf course. May your drives be straight and your putts short!

GOLF TIPS & CLINICS

I hope everyone is ready for a great 2018! As I write this, I just got back a few days ago from the PNC Father/Son Challenge at Grande Lakes Golf Resort in Orlando. It was a great week to spend some time with my father and brother (who caddied for me) and also fun to play some golf on a big stage. The field is made up of 20 different major winners and their sons or grandsons. So to play in a tour-nament along side names like Nicklaus, Tre-vino, Duval, Norman, etc. is something very special.

Dad and I had a good week, put together a few highlights, and had a solid 6th place finish out of the 20 teams. We finished at 20 under par, 5 shots back of the winners, Masters and US Open champion, Angel Cabrera and his son. It was a great time! This month, I thought I would pass on a thought that was helpful for me playing on that big of a stage, that I think will also be helpful for you in your game too.

I unfortunately have not been able to play in too many tournaments recently, and obvi-ously there were a lot of things to be distract-ed by like galleries, TV cameras, and Hall of Fame golfers. Staying focused mentally, not getting nervous and not getting distracted I knew was going to be a challenge for me. So I kept reminding myself the same thing I’ve reminded several of my students, to own the last 10 seconds.

Now let me explain what I mean. A given round of golf might take anywhere from 4 to 5 hours; thats a LONG time to try to be mentally focused! Owning the last 10 seconds means you give yourself the freedom to let your mind wander, get distracted, and lose focus, while you are in between shots. My goal was 10 seconds before every shot, right before I start-ed to approach the ball, I would take a deep breath and stop thinking about the cameras, the galleries, etc. and clear my mind where I was only thinking about the shot I was play-ing. This obviously doesn’t just apply on a big stage, but applies to every round of golf. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you are playing, it is very tough stay mentally focused for a whole round. Some people will tell you to never think about what other people are doing, or never think about your score, or other things like that. I say give yourself more freedom and start small, just own the last 10 seconds before every shot! While it still takes some effort, you can stay focused for 10 sec-onds! It helped me this week, and you will be amazed what that can do to your score if you can do this for all 18 holes too!

KNOWING THE RULES WITH BEN SLOANScott is playing in a tournament here at Stono Ferry. He is 5 under on his round through hole 16. On hole 17 he hooks the ball off the tee and ends up in the trees on the left. He is able to punch it back out into play. His second shot ends up near some rocks by the cart path. However, he is unsure whether or not he is able to get relief. In this situation, what are his options?

According to Rule 3-3 Doubt as to Procedure:

In stroke play only, if a competitor is doubtful of his rights or the correct procedure during the play of a hole, he may, without penalty, complete the hole with two balls. To proceed under this Rule, he must decide to play two balls after the doubtful situation has arisen and before taking further action (e.g., making a stroke at the original ball).

If Scott decides to proceed under Rule 3-3 he must announce that he is going to play two balls and must also indicate which ball he wants to count.

Once he has finished his round Scott must let the Rules Committee know that he played two balls before he turns in his scorecard. The committee will then make a ruling on the situation. It helps to always know your options!

FROM THE HEAD PRO Head Golf Professional Scott Glaze

Happy New Year! Before we focus on the great things to come in 2018, let’s take a look back at the wonderful accomplishments achieved at Stono Ferry in 2017.

First of all, I cannot thank the Membership enough for helping my transition into the role of Head Golf Professional. It’s hard to believe that it’s been nearly 10 months since I first sat behind this desk. But like the old cliché says, time flies when you’re having fun! The Stono Family is very unique and extremely important to me. Our blend of golf and community are unlike any other Club in the Lowcountry, and I am tremendously proud to be a part of Stono Ferry. Our future is bright and I’m looking forward to experiencing new endeavors and successes together.

2017 was highlighted by many great events, but I truly think the star of the show has always been the golf course. Our wonderful layout of 18 character-laced holes was in championship caliber day in, and day out. Members and Guests alike praised the condition of the course more this year than any year prior. We are extremely lucky to have Michael Eargle and his hard working Course Maintenance Staff! Along with the purity of our turf, we hosted very exciting and competi-tive Member events and culminated our competitive year by hosting The Battle at Stono Ferry. Top collegiate teams from around the country battled along our historic grounds for one of the most memorable events in recent history. We put a bow on 2017 (no pun intended), by hosting a record turnout for our annual Gifts for Golf Tournament. 148 golfers donated over 200 toys for Toys for Tots and over 600 canned goods to the Lowcountry Food Bank. Our entire Staff was thrilled to be able to donate such generous amounts to those in need during the Holiday Season.

I firmly believe that 2018 will be a benchmark year for Stono Ferry. We have many exciting things to come, including potential new formats in a few Member events, great new products in the Golf Shop, online blitz and tournament registration, live scoring for Member blitzes and tournaments, and much more. We can’t wait to see you around the Club in the New Year!

In 2018, you will see more exciting things happening such as Member Tournaments at both courses, so stay tuned for more details! We encourage all of our members to get out and play more golf in the new year!

Welcome to the New Year! In the prior newsletter I covered some reasons why we, at the Plantation Course, do not over-seed. One reason I mentioned was the time it freed up for us to accomplish projects on our priority list. I hope that many of you have seen the results of these projects. Our project goals fall into categories that are to beautify the golf course, improve playing conditions or streamline maintenance practices.

We have updated the hardscape of the bathrooms on 7 and 15 by using shell sand and metal edging to create a path for carts to use. The bathroom on 15 required a drainage repair before adding the path and both bathrooms now have gutters to channel water away from the entrances. Additional sod and vegetation will be added early spring to complete the project. We continue to update and add drainage to problem areas on the course. Holes 5 and 8 have been completed and areas on 7 and 14 plan to be addressed. The cart path on #2 has been converted to a sand path with the intent of leveling the surface and adding a native look. The previous asphalt was in poor shape from heaving and settling creating a rough surface for carts.

We will continue improvements to the course and we appreciate your patience while certain areas are being worked on. As always, we do ask that you please obey ropes and stakes that are put up in high traffic areas and please repair your ball marks on the greens.

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and The Plantation Course Golf Course Maintenance Department looks forward to a successful and hurricane free 2018!!

OFF-SEASON CART TRAFFIC AT THE PLANTATION COURSEAs we get deeper into winter, I would like to send out a friendly reminder. As all of you know, we do not over seed here at the Plantation Course. Therefore, it is imperative that we all be mindful of our golf cart etiquette. There are a few areas on the golf course that were slow to recover from the last flood, numerous enter and exit points off the cart paths, and shaded areas to be aware of.

The flood affected areas on 1, 4, 14, and 15 are very sensitive to cart traffic. These areas were hit the hardest from the salt water flooding and did not have enough time to fully recover. All of these areas are roped off, and we would appre-ciate that all carts remain off of these areas. We have also marked all of Hole 14 as Cart Path Only until further notice. Please obey all ropes and signs that are in these areas and PLEASE do not move any of them.

Enter and exit points are referred to as where carts EXIT the cart path onto the grass and where they ENTER the cart path from the grass. All too often, these areas are the same for each group playing the hole. When carts continuously enter and exit the same spots the soil gets compacted making it hard for grass to root or recover from the stress. The 90 degree rule was created to solve this issue. If everyone entered and exited 90 degrees from the path to their ball, there would be a variety of enter/exit points, not just one area at the tees and one area at the green.

Another similar trend to enter/exit points is pulling the cart off of the edge of the cart path when parking. You will notice that the edges of the cart path get damaged from compaction near tees, greens and sharp turns. Please leave all four tires on the path when parking.

Lastly, shaded areas are also similar to enter/exit areas in that they cannot recover as quickly this time of year due to lack of sunlight. These areas also stay wet longer and carts can track when driving through.

We ask that everyone do their part in keeping our golf course beautiful no matter what the season. Try to remember these two points; Obey ropes and signs and keep the cart on the path as often as possible using the 90 degree rule. Thank you for doing your part to keep our golf course looking great!

MEN’S GOLF ASSOCIATION NEWSWelcome Men’s Golf Association Members to 2018: The Year of the “Bomb Cy-clone”, the weather event that brought golf in Charleston to a screeching halt with freezing temperatures, icy rain and several inches of snow. As one person said, “If I wanted this weather, I would have stayed in Buffalo!!! NO KIDDING!!

However, the “Bomb Cyclone” will surely pass, resulting once again, in beautifully conditioned tees, fairways and greens at both the Links at Stono Ferry and the Plantation Course at Edisto.

On December 11th, members attending the Annual MGA Meeting elected three new members to the MGA Board of Directors: Barry Coffey, Andrew Smith and Greg Mclain. These three will join existing Board members Ferol Vernon, Art Kreutz and Henry Opiekun. General Manager Greg Wood and Head Pro Scott Glaze are currently working to appoint a Handicap Chairman, who, once ap-pointed, will sit as the 7th member of the Stono Ferry MGA Board of Directors for 2018.

The 2018 Board of Directors has already had several meetings where planning has begun on a financial budget, setting tournament dates, discussing changes/enhancements to tournament formats, adding new tournaments and soliciting existing, past and new sponsorships to support MGA events.

As most know, the MGA has three levels of sponsorships: Platinum $1,000, Gold $500 and Silver $150. The Platinum and Gold Sponsors have full color banners erected during MGA events in front of the clubhouse and near the practice put-ting green for maximum exposure, plus several complimentary rounds of golf, and, new this season, an invitation to a Sponsor Appreciation Tournament and Luncheon to be held in the spring.

Silver Sponsors have tee signs posted at the tee of their choice during MGA tournaments and two complimentary rounds of golf.

Please, if any MGA member would like to sponsor at the Platinum, Gold or Silver level, or know someone, perhaps a business in the Hollywood, Ravenel, West Ashley or John’s Island area, please again, approach that person or contact a Board member to do so. Sponsorships play a critical role in the financial success of any golf club. The assistance of every MGA member in this effort is valued, necessary and appreciated.

Finally, this Men’s Golf Association is YOUR Golf Association. As a result, this Board of Directors encourages, values and solicits your comments, ideas, and feedback regarding any topic related to golf at the Links at Stono Ferry. Feel free to contact any member of the MGA Board or send me an e-mail at [email protected].

Play well and enjoy your round,

Henry Opiekun, PresidentMen’s Golf Association

PS: Bomb Cyclone!!! Really???

Hope everyone has gotten off to a great start in 2018. During the winter, it is a great time to do some baking. Don’t forget to stop by the clubhouse and check out our daily lunch specials. Thanks again for all your support.
