Like a child love would send to reveal and to mend,
like a child and a friend, Jesus comes
like a child we may find claiming heart, soul and mind
like a child strong and kind, Jesus comes Dan Damon
It was the Sunday afternoon before Christmas and I found myself amid the bustle & flurry of dress
rehearsal for the family Christmas Eve service. Parents, leaders, helpers, musicians and sound
technicians all scurried, consulted each other, measured squirmy children for costumes and moved sets.
What caught my attention in the midst of this lively scene, was the children. Little ones eleven months
through 10 year olds were scattered around the sanctuary, some wearing angel wings, others with a
woolly vest, a few with lamb or donkey ears sprouting from the sides of their head. The children
were…well…being children. A few were running in delight, some snacking on crackers, others were
singing or quietly humming. The children, paying little attention to the frantic adults scurrying around
them, laughed, played, conversed and were just being kids, enjoying and relishing in the moment. These
little ones weren't concerned about what was for lunch or required alterations needed in their costumes.
They simply trusted that mom or dad would see to those details. And so they were free...free to be
themselves, free to run and sing just because they could, free to notice the amazing world that unfolded
right before them.
Jesus came to our world as a child, welcomed children and instructs us to be child-like in our faith,
trusting that God will care for us no matter what comes our way. Our congregation is blessed to have
many young children in our midst. They have much to share with us, just as we have much to share with
them. What a blessing!
As we enter into a new year, let us do so with that trusting confidence of children, knowing that God
goes with us. Setting aside our fret and worry we can be free to be exactly who God created each of us
to be—and enjoy the journey. This new year, let us trust that God holds the future as we continue to
grow in relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ and know the blessings of the abundant life he offers
us—no matter what our age.
I pray that each of you may know the blessings and freedom that 2015 holds as we seek together to love
and serve our Lord.
Shalom,
The Z-Disciple JANUARY 2015

received during the holiday season. We enjoy

is appreciated.

2015 Flower Calendar
The calendar is located in the church office. We
purchase the flowers from Ford’s and they are $25
for two arrangements.
It’s easy being Green at FCC
Recycle your newspapers, magazines, catalogs and
junk mail and help the environment and the church.
For the last year, we have been recycling paper
through our church. You may have notice that we
have been given an additional recycling bin in our
parking lot to help meet the need. The bins are
emptied twice a month and the church receives a
check based on the weight of paper collected.
Recycle boxes have also been place in classrooms
and other areas of the church for you to recycle
paper used in classrooms, office, etc. To date, we
have saved 32.08 cubic yards of landfill space.
Proceeds from this project, help us make other
“green” improvements to our church building.
Thanks for your help in our efforts to care for God’s
creation.
Fair Trade Coffee Project
For the past several years, we have made fair trade
coffee available to our members through the
Disciple Coffee Project. Not only does the purchase
help small farmers worldwide by purchasing their
crops for a fair price, but each purchase made
supports the ministry of Week of Compassion.
Thank you for your support of the Disciple Coffee
Project.
Electronic Funds Transfer-Another way to give
to your church
First Christian Church invites you to enjoy the
convenience and comfort of the EFT (Electronic
Funds Transfer) giving option. The reasons for
automatic bank drafting are clearly advantageous:
It is easy: Complete a form that is available in the
church office.
It is economical: No cost to you or the church
It is disciplined: Set the frequency of automated
check yourself
It is regular: Choose weekly, bi-monthly or
monthly distribution
Church Office Hours
Church office hours continue to be Monday-Friday
9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Janice Fox is in the office
during those hours (lunch usually between noon-1
p.m.). You can reach her at 453-3437 or
[email protected]. If no one answers when
you call, please leave a message on the machine and
we will get right back to you. Janice may be on the
other line or in a different part of the building.
Rev. Remster is at the church most mornings and
many evenings and a good part of weekends. She
makes visits many afternoons. She can be reached
at the church 453-3437 or [email protected].
She can also be reached at home 454-8064. Dawn’s
day off is usually Monday.

What’s Happening in Youth Groups?
This month has been full of special events as we have enjoyed celebrating the Christmas season together in a
number of special ways. These experiences have been especially meaningful, because many of them have been
shared with our larger church family allowing us opportunities for intergenerational ministry. These
opportunities to be together are reminders of the blessings we experience through our friends of all ages.
Brian and Meagan Ulbrich, Emma Kimberly and Logan
Graham eagerly await to see their beautiful friend Mady
Wilson perform in the Nutcracker. Also attending the
performance were members of the JC and Kingdom
Kids who were eager to cheer on their friend Callie
Buchanan. This beautiful Christmas tradition was even
more fun when we got to see members of our own
church family on stage!
Advent Workshop
Members of all ages enjoyed getting crafty at this
year’s advent workshop. The Christian
Education Committee planned the crafts and the
youth led the crafts at the event. Everyone had
fun visiting with old and new friends as we
enjoyed a soup dinner and made ornaments,
wreaths, and other fun crafts.
Chili Cook-Off
The youth are humbled and extremely grateful for the
support and generosity that was shown to them at The Great
Chili Cook-Off 2014. We are pleased to announce that $930
was donated towards the youth mission trip at this fun, tasty
event! Wow! We are overwhelmed by your gifts!
Congratulations to our first place team, Team Chopped!
Tim Remster, Matt Perry, Austin Perry, Trey Wilson, Sierra
Smith and Maddie Ashby (not pictured) proved that healthy
can be delicious! The homegrown jalapeno peppers in this
recipe made it a real winner!
The Z-Disciple JANUARY 2015
More Chili Cook-Off
With only $2.50 separating them from the winners,
this group deserves a trophy of their own! Sweet
Baby Jesus chili left us wanting more!
Congratulations to Skyler Irving, Meagan Ulbrich,
Logan Graham, Brian Ulbrich, Judy Lear and Mark
Graham for making this competition a real run for
the money!
This group was SO fun in their hats with their music
playing...and the guacamole straws added in the chili
was a tasty touch! Jill Bednarczuk, Jacob Devoll,
Nolan Kimberly, Olivia Allen, Emma Kimberly,
Jonathan Perry and Rick Griffin (not pictured)
brought the party to our cook-off!
This group wowed voters with their Mexican Brownies!
Yum! Hats off to Justin Allen, Mady Wilson, Adam Jones,
Zack and Wesley Devoll, and Gavin Newton.
The Z-Disciple JANUARY 2015
Caroling
I am not sure what this group enjoys
more....the singing they do in the van or at the
front door of our members’! But one thing is
for sure....they bring the joy of the season with
them! This group had a blast visiting our
homebound members and sharing the joy of
the season through song!
Christmas Party- The youth shared one last
hurrah together before Christmas at their
Christmas Party. They put on the tackiest
Christmas apparel they could find and joined us
for an “old school” Christmas party. We made it
through musical chairs with no serious injuries,
played Christmas Carol Pictionary, and decorated
graham cracker houses. If you are daring enough
to find out what the candy ball game is, you will
have to join us next year. This Xtreme game has
become a tradition we all look forward to!
Looking Ahead The youth took two weeks off at the end of December, but will resume meeting again on Sunday evenings from
6-7:30 beginning on January 4th. On January 4th the second payment for the summer mission trip is due. The
youth will conclude their study of Galatians this month and be making choices about their next study. There is
also a lock-in in our near future!
The JC/Kingdom Kids are planning a movie night! We will gather on January 17th in the youth room to watch
Frozen and share a lesson on what the bible has to say about fear. Mark your calendars....more details coming
soon!
Are you planning a summer vacation? As you plan your summer vacations, please take note of these important summer dates:

As we leave 2014 behind may we approach 2015 with renewed energy and resolve to be kinder to one another,
offer a helping hand to the less fortunate, and perhaps step out of our comfort zone to help someone in need.
No one person can end hunger in Zanesville or feed the people at Christ’s Table but together as part of the body
of Christ, the little things that we do together will make a difference!
THANK YOU! Thanks to all who supported our 2014 Christmas Offering. Part of the 2014 Christmas offering will be used to
provide rain barrels to gather drinking water for 10 deserving families in Jamaica thru the non-profit
organization of Kingdom Builders. The remainder of the 2014 offering will be donated to our church Deacon
fund. This fund helps many people throughout our community.
Thanks to you, 148 pairs of mittens and gloves, 2 scarves, and 59 hats will be distributed to
Zanesville City Pre-School, The Salvation Army, and Eastside Community Ministry.
And lastly, thanks to all who adopted angels from the Christmas tree in the chapel. We helped provide gifts to
15 children who live in Muskingum County and who have a mother or father incarcerated in a state correctional
facility. The gifts we provided let those children know that they were not forgotten by their mom or dad.
Food Collection As you do your weekly grocery shopping consider buying an extra can or two of soup to place in our grocery
cart located next to the elevator. Food donations are given to the Eastside Community Ministry Pantry. We are
thankful for your generosity and continued support of this important ministry, feeding God’s people.
Christ’s Table Start the New Year out by helping feed God’s people. We will be serving at Christ’s Table, Saturday January
24th
from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The sign up sheet is located in the main hallway bulletin board.
