Silverthorn-area residents are eagerly awaiting the opening of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, particularly the local Keelesdale station, but are aware its con-struction will bring added congestion to an already busy area.

So, did you get your 2016 census filled out yet? I did mine. Online.

Truth be told, I would have much preferred to receive a paper questionnaire. But you have to specifically request one of those and I didn’t want to have to go through the hassle of ordering that on top of filling it out.

Besides, I have a feeling whenever you choose to do anything on paper these days instead of online, that govern-ments, institutions, compa-nies, et al put an asterisk on your file. I especially don’t like the thought of al doing that. Al can be so condescending at times.

Anyhow, I got with the pro-gram, as they say. I breezed right through it, too. There was only one question I struggled to answer. A puzzling one that asked if I wanted the informa-tion I had just provided to be available to future generations and historical researchers 92 years from now in 2108.

I figured I better call the toll-free Census Help Line to get an explanation. Alas, all I

got was the automated mes-sage offering the inevitable list of options.

I hit the appropriate button sequence to get to the right department, but eventually hung up after feeling like I was on hold for 92 years.

If I’d been lucky to get a live operator on the line I would have asked a number of things. For starters, who picked the music you hear while you’re on hold? It didn’t sound like it came from any genre I’ve ever come across.

The next question on my mind is, how did they arrive at 92 years anyway?

Shouldn’t it have been a round number? I was under the impression that all government-generated numbers always end in zero. I thought it was written in the Constitution.

Not that 90 would have made more sense to me. Since when do you have to wait that

long to reach future genera-tions? Everything happens quicker today. New genera-tions seem to pop up every time you turn a corner.

Most importantly, I couldn’t tell by the question what exactly was going to be hap-pening in 2108 if I did click “yes.”

Is the assumption that the census can use my infor-mation for 91 years and my permission was only needed to continue to use it starting in 2108?

Or was this just talking about what happens begin-ning in 2108 alone?

Enquiring minds want to know. Well, this one enquiring mind anyway.

Sigh. It looks like I’ll have to hang around another 92 years to find out. But I’m not too worried. The way days are flying by, it’ll be here in no time.

Toronto performance artist Jessica Gorlicky, who goes by JessGo, spends as much of her time creating visual art on the road in front of audiences as she does in the studio.

But even though only half her time working as an artist is in the studio, when she is there, she requires space and lots of it, as she creates large-scale paintings.

“Large is really inspiring. It’s just my comfort zone,” she said. “If you’re making an eight or nine foot paint-ing, you can’t do it in a small room. I tried. It doesn’t work.”

Luckily for the Lawrence Avenue and Avenue Road area resident, she has found the perfect space in York’s Fairbank community, home to Toronto’s design district.

“I fell in love with this 2,500 sq. ft. warehouse that was completely raw to begin with,” she said, adding creating the art space inside the warehouse was an art project in itself.

“It was a labour of love and I’m really enjoying the space now... We have 30-foot wide windows. It’s like a New York loft and it’s a dream space for an artist.”

Gorlicky is hosting an open house at her new studio. There’s an invite-only event for 250 guests tomorrow, and a public event Saturday with the doors open to everyone. During the event, she’ll demonstrate her ability to turn painting into a spectacle.

“I feel like you’ll have a completely

different experience from any artis-tic one you’ve had in Toronto. The space, the energy, the artwork, it’s yours to discover,” she said. “I have a vision of what an event should be like. I feel like you should walk into a whole other world.”

She’ll create a painting at her open house that will later be available for purchase.

Gorlicky is certainly at ease when eyes are on her. She performs at public and private events, at cor-porate functions and for charities, doing approximately 100 perfor-mances a year. In 2012, she was signed to 77 shows with Cirque du Soleil. Her work has been commis-sioned by Google, Holt Renfrew, Sephora, the Olympics, Nordstrom Canada, and her art hangs around the world.

Her art can get quite large too, such as the 63-foot mural she painted for the Nordstrom store in Ottawa last year.

“Jobs like that make my whole world. That’s the most amazing thing that can happen,” she said.

Gorlicky intends to spend every-day at her new studio; however, admission is by appointment as she’s constantly on the road and gallery hours may be irregular.

The studio is at 660 Caledonia Rd.

Saturday’s open house runs from noon to 5 p.m., with the live painting happening around 1 p.m.

Elissa Antonio can sit up, stand, lift both her feet and maneuver herself into a wheelchair.

It’s an accomplishment just six weeks after the Toronto woman fell 40 feet off a cliff in the dark while foraging wood for a family bonfire while on vacation in her native Trinidad.

She broke her pelvis, her right sacrum and fractured her right leg. Her right heel was so broken, her foot was twisted around 180 degrees.

Antonio, 40, languished in a Trinidadian hospital for 14 days, no doctor able to perform the needed surgeries. The hospital’s CT scanner didn’t work.

Antonio had travelled home to visit her parents, as she always had, without travel insurance.

Aubrey Clarke, a friend, launched a GoFundMe page, which raised more than $60,000 in seven days to trans-port Antonio home last month on a medical airlift.

Antonio was rushed to a Toronto hospital where she underwent a 10-hour surgery to repair her pelvis, right sacrum, and right leg. The follow-ing day, a surgeon had to re-break her heel before surgically repairing it.

The mother of two teenage daugh-ters spoke with reporters Wednesday, May 4 at a media availability in the lush gardens of St. John’s Rehab on Cummer Avenue in North York, where she is recovering.

“The support has been overwhelm-ing,” Antonio said, seated in a wheel-chair, her right leg in a cast. “Every time I got an email from Aubrey, my sister, strangers saying ‘keep your head up’ or sharing that they’d never had travel insurance... There are no words to thank everyone who donated, supported me, who said and who continue to say prayers.”

Her ordeal is a cautionary tale on the importance of travel insurance.

“I’ve learned my lesson. I think I’ve overlearned my lesson,” Antonio said, noting she “buys an airline ticket and I’m gone.” Never, until now, had she given travel insurance a thought.

Six weeks later, Antonio said she has pain that runs down her back to her toes, keeping her up at night. She sometimes sleeps during the day.

“I feel great,” she said. “I’ve accom-plished so much in so little time. Nobody expected me to get this far this fast.”

Currently, Antonio is undergoing occupational therapy to strengthen her upper body, and physiotherapy to retrain her muscles in her leg. Doctors

told her she must stay off her right leg for 12 weeks.

Doctors believe she will walk again.

Antonio’s recovery is expected to take up to a year. During that time, she cannot work. She has no short-term or long-term disability through her employer.

The GoFundMe campaign remains open to assist Antonio with living expenses during her recovery.

“It will be a long road to recovery. We want her not to have to worry about her finances,” Clarke said of the ongoing GoFundMe campaign. “We don’t want her to be stressed. We’re not trying to raise a million dollars. We just want her not to worry about how she’ll pay her rent or make her car payment.”

Antonio recalled for reporters the moments before and after she fell.

“I kept on walking. I couldn’t see exactly where I was going. I used my

phone to help me see. Basically, I just walked off the cliff,” Antonio recalled.

“I had the thought, ‘hang on to something.’ But there was noth-ing.”

Incredibly, she landed on the beach atop a large piece of foam someone had left there. A sea of rocks sur-rounded her. Antonio said she prayed to God for strength as she writhed in anguished pain in a Trinidadian hospital, often choosing to go without pain medication for days.

“I have a lot of faith in God,” Antonio said. “In Trinidad, the medi-cine they gave me gave me muscle spasms. It made the pain worse. So most of the time, I didn’t take it. I had to ask God to take the pain from me. Without that, I would have died.”

Last week’s vote on Uber at Toronto City Council did undeniable harm to two very vulnerable groups in our city.

Taxi drivers form one of those groups. The suite of amendments moved by Mayor John Tory and approved by a solid major-ity of Toronto councillors makes the lives of drivers who don’t own their own plates undeniably worse.

Licenced taxi driv-ers come away from the debate with less stable income, in a position that makes it virtually impos-sible to compete with a potential flood of Uber-X cars and drivers.

And then there is that other vulnerable group – one that’s not vulnerable economically or socially perhaps, but is practically an endangered species in the political ecology of Toronto City Hall: Toronto’s small but vocal group of left-wing council-lors.

Tory left them gasping

in disbelief, after he aban-doned a long negotiation with them to come up with a more progressive and taxi driver-friendly set of amendments, to make a sharp turn to the right and champion a very different, very Uber-friendly set of amendments.

Those amendments mollified some of the bigger voices on the right – notably Giorgio Mammoliti and Jim Karygiannis.

But they left the leader-ship on the left – Janet Davis, Gord Perks, Deputy Mayor Pam McConnell – seething more than usual.

The negotiations had been long, and the left went into the May council meeting thinking they had a deal.

The reversal was a clear indication that the left could count on no reli-

able negotiations with the mayor’s office, so there was no point in trying.

None of this should concern Tory much.

While it’s true he has promised to bring Toronto Council together in a way that no other mayor has, the reality is that Tory does not really need to do so in order to govern.

His natural allies, coun-cil’s centrists and right wing, will support him on most matters.

If the mayor wants to put policy in place that strays to the left, he can rely on council’s left without a thought. Is the left going to vote against bike lanes, public housing dollars, public health mat-ters?

Given that Tory’s man-date seems to be based on offering comfort to voters of nearly every political persuasion, will the left really be able to bring forward a credible, win-ning mayoral candidate in 2018?

Council’s left wing meanwhile, is in a corner. Unless a Bernie Sanders municipal figure emerges very soon, there is very little that a left-leaning councillor can do to harm Tory politically, particu-larly as Tory is far more likely to face a strong chal-lenger from the right.

And as was demon-strated last week, there is scarcely more that left-wing councillors can accomplish in working with Tory and his staff.

They can vote for policies they agree with, of course, but influence them? Put a mark on them?

Well they can certainly try – if, that is, they can put from their minds the May 2016 council meeting, when they and Toronto’s cab drivers both lost it all.

The 10-year cycling plan proposed by the city this week that could see hundreds of kilome-tres of cycling infrastructure built is certainly

ambitious and one that is worth going after in an expeditious manner.

The plan is large in scale featuring 525 kilometres of new infrastructure with bike lanes and cycle tracks proposed in neighbourhoods across the entire city.

This should generate excitement as there seems to be a city-building opportunity here with feasibility studies planned on some of Toronto’s major street corridors including Yonge Street from Front Street to Steeles Avenue, along Bloor Street from Dundas Street West to Sherbourne Street, and Danforth Avenue from Broadview Avenue to Kingston Road.

Like public transit, this plan has the potential of connecting and moving Toronto residents by pro-

viding more travel alternatives especially for those living in the edges of the city where afford-able transportation options are woefully lacking.

Building a connected network of bike lanes throughout the city could also encourage more people to ride their bicycles on

safer, designated routes. The benefits of doing so are many, such as helping

reduce traffic gridlock, promoting a healthier life-style, and decreasing the number of cycling fatalities.

The timing also seems right with growing support from cycling advocates as well as the political will to take action on these issues. Last week’s approval by Toronto Council for a pilot project to put separated bicycle lanes on Bloor Street is a good start.

Of course, an ambitious plan like this has financial implications with the city recommending five levels of funding starting from $8 million a year that would allow for design and delivery of 27 per cent of the proposed projects, and $12 million a year to see half the projects go ahead.

But this shouldn’t be done piecemeal and spend-ing $20 million a year to complete the whole project in 10 years is warranted.

With careful planning, community consulta-tion, and financial accountability, the plan should proceed forward as soon as possible. Any delays in implementation could see costs rise and leave Toronto further behind other major cities when it comes to transportation infrastructure.

It’s about time a city like Toronto catches up and becomes more connected.

transit

The Eglinton Crosstown LRT celebrated an important construction milestone this week.

Metrolinx announced the completion of western tun-nelling for the portion of the light rail line to run below Eglinton Avenue. Since June 2013, two massive Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), nicknamed Dennis and Lea, had excavated a tunnel around 50-feet below street level from Black Creek Drive to Yonge Street.

Last year, another pair of TBMs started tunnelling the Crosstown’s eastern underground portion trav-eling from Brentcliffe Road towards Yonge Street. Both of them are currently west of Bayview Avenue.

wcomplete gardiner closure on weekend

Road closures keep coming this month, with construc-tion projects tying up major intersections and snarling traffic.

This weekend will have another transportation

doozy: the shuttering of the Gardiner Expressway – all of it – for spring maintenance work.

wttc bus driVer praised For good deed

When a TTC bus driver makes the news, it’s all too often for negative reasons.

But Daniel Clavette at least is receiving some well-deserved praise for his recent actions. Clavette was working his regular shift Monday, May 2 when he came across a knapsack left on the 9 Bellamy bus he had been driving. Opening the bag to determine if there was any identifica-tion, he found instead $50,000 in cash, along with funeral papers.

It turned out the owner of the bag had recently lost his mother, and the money was likely an inheritance.

Clavette did the right

thing and radioed transit control, ensuring the bag, with the money intact, was returned to its owner.

wuse presto card at wellesley station

You can now use your Presto card at Wellesley Station. The station is the 28th in the subway and RT network to receive Presto access, and the TTC is promising to have every subway station plus all buses hooked up to the tap-on fare system by the end of the year.

Physical locations where you can purchase an adult Presto card are a little more elusive, but you can buy a pre-loaded card for $20 plus a $6 issuing fee from vending machines at Union, Queen’s Park and Main Street stations. Some downtown Gateway newsstands also have pre-loaded cards for sale.

Swar tz has l ived on Queen’s Drive since 1989. Everyone is always helping each other out, she said

“If there’s a snowstorm, two to three people are shov-eling their driveway if some-one is away,” Swartz said.

At Halloween, homeown-ers see as many as 800 trick-or-treaters at their doors.

“We have really great neighbours. It’s a really wonderful street,” Swartz said.

The sale has earned the title of Weston’s largest annual yard sale. More than 40 homes participate throughout three blocks on Queen’s Drive between Jane Street and Rosemount Avenue. The $6 participation fee covers advertising costs. Proceeds from the sale go towards the Weston Heritage

Conservation District of which Queen’s Drive is part of.

As the yard sale reaches its 30-year milestone next year, it will double in size, incor-porating six blocks of homes, Swartz said. The street sale

is easy to access by TTC, she added. In addition to a variety of items for sale, there will be pizza, hotdogs, candy floss and coffee.

The sale takes place between 8 a.m. and noon – rain or shine.

Services Inc., the company hired to take down the build-ing, Oatley Vigmond, a per-sonal injury law firm, said last week.

“Clearly, things like that don’t happen on a construc-tion site unless things are handled incorrectly,” Ryan Murray, a senior partner at the firm, said in an interview about the pending litiga-tion.

Ontario’s labour ministry is still investigating the acci-dent, which may take several more months, but Murray said Somerset is required to notify the city of impending litigation within 10 days of such an incident.

Somerset, he said, is a mother of three grown children who loves being a Personal Support Worker, and “had no plans to slow down just because she’s 66.”

She was walking to a bus stop when the collapse hap-pened.

The firm said a Good Samaritan comforted and stayed with Somerset, who also suffered a head injury

and was briefly uncon-scious,

until rescuers cut and lifted off the pipes and other debris trapping her.

She was discharged from Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre to West Park Healthcare Centre, a rehabilitation hospi-tal in Mount Dennis, and her lawyers say she faces months of therapy just to regain partial mobility.

Mu r r a y s a i d Somerset, who lives not far west

of the accident scene, is con-cerned about the possible effects of her head injury.

Oatley Vigmond said last month’s collapse is “similar” to a Christmas Eve 2009 scaf-folding collapse at a Kipling Avenue highrise, in which four workers fell to their deaths, and to another scaffolding

accident last March near High Park

which left two construction

workers dead.

Victim faces months of rehab after being pinned in collapse

to deal with during construc-tion, especially because their house is a stone’s throw away from the future station, which will be located at the corner of Eglinton Avenue West and Keele Street. There will be a secondary entrance at the northwest corner of Eglinton Avenue and Trethewey Drive adjacent to York Memorial.

Since last fall, crews have been preparing Eglinton Avenue for construction of both the Keelesdale and Mount Dennis stations – Keelesdale will be built first.

“ We’re hosting open houses over the course of the next few months where we’re building underground stations,” Metrolinx spokes-person Jamie Robinson said. “There’s a lot of work taking place at these locations. We want people to understand: a, what’s being built; and b, what they can expect, the impacts on traffic and bus stops.”

A large watermain at Eglinton and Trethewey-Keele will be relocated early this month. Utility work at each intersection is antici-pated to take two months. To accommodate the shoring and decking phase of con-struction, Yarrow Road at Eglinton will be closed for as long as six to eight months. Residents will be

able to access the short residential street south of Eglinton from either Keele Street or Bicknell Avenue, Metrolinx said in a hand-out to those who attended the open house.

Currently, eastbound and westbound traffic on Eglinton is operating in the two north-ernmost lanes. This will continue until September. Meanwhile, northbound and southbound traffic on Keele-Trethewey has shifted to the two east-side lanes, which will also continue until

September. Eglinton is set to lose about 25 parking spots and several bus stops must be temporarily moved: two stops on Keele Street for the #41 bus and two stops on Eglinton for the #32 route. The pedestrian crossing on Eglinton Avenue at Keele-Trethewey is slated for clo-sure this month while the northwest corner sidewalk in front of York Memorial has to be rerouted behind the construction area. Maya N., Sweden

Maya was shocked by the change in her hair.Fullness and volume were replaced by thinnessand lifeless hair. She had to do something.

The hair I found in mybrush, in the shower andon my cardigan was unfa-miliar to me. It was thinninglike never before. How couldthis be happening?

I had to do somethingI found out my mother expe-rienced the same problemswhen she was younger, andshe simply accepted her fate. But so much of my personal-ity is in my hair, and I didnot want to have the sameproblems. I had read aboutthe importance of hair nutri-ents, so I decided to focus onthe inside rather than on theoutside, and went looking fora good supplement.

My hair now feels fullerI was recommended anatural product called HairVolume™. I have now usedit for 2 months and I am re-ally satisfied with the prod-uct. My hair feels full andhealthy and even my nailsfeel much stronger. Theshedding has also almoststopped. This is proof to methat proper nutrition on theinside helps you look yourbest on the outside. I highlyrecommend Hair Volume.”

The City-operated Hollis Early Learning and Child Care Centre in Mount Dennis is moving a few blocks up the road as its current location will be closed to make way for an Eglinton Crosstown LRT stop.

T h e c i t y ’s G o v e r n m e n t Management Committee approved a recommendation to expropriate vacant property just north of the existing childcare centre at a May 9 meeting to relocate the facility. City Council must still approve the

move at its June 7 meeting. The existing centre operates

at 1 Hollis St., but will be sold to Metrolinx, the provincial transit agency in charge of building the LRT line along Eglinton Avenue, by no later than Aug. 15. A transfer agreement between the city and Metrolinx means the provincial agency will fund all costs of the relocation, which includes prop-erty acquisition, construction of the new facility, retrofitting space at a

temporary location, and the actual relocation costs.

The childcare program will move to a temporary location at 1296 Weston Rd., and then to a perma-nent location. The city intends to purchase property at 1230-1234 Weston Rd. through expropriation. A city report says the property is an appropriate location as it is currently vacant, is the correct size for the program and had previously used as a childcare centre.
