WE’RE MORE THAN YOU KNOW.

WE’RE A CAUSE. Many people know us as four letters, but we’re so much more than that. From exercise to education, from values to volunteerism, from pools to preschool, from sports to support for those in need or financial assistance, the Y doesn’t just strengthen our bodies, it strengthens our community.

Dear Friends,

Throughout San Joaquin County countless people know the Y, but there’s so much more to our Y than one might think. When you ask around, the Y has a unique meaning to each person. To one, the Y might mean safety or homework help. To another, the Y could mean swimming or even new friendships. One thing for sure is that the Y is more than a place, we’re a cause dedicated to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. San Joaquin County faces new challenges that create a greater need for the work we do every day. Fortunately, where some see obstacles, we see opportunities for our members, volunteers and staff to make a difference. For 159 years, we’ve been proud to help move our community forward serving more than 14,600 individuals this year. Within the pages of this annual report you will read about how the Y is making a positive impact throughout our community.

We are proud and honored to work with a group of local organizations, schools and non-profits who share our goals for the community. It is with our deepest gratitude that we thank our staff, volunteers, partners and donors who have helped us continue to deliver our vision to be the program of choice for inspiring youth to reach their fullest potential. There is so much more to accomplish, and with the continued support from our community we can strengthen the foundations of San Joaquin County.

Thank you for helping us achieve so much more.

Joseph’s mom was worried about the amount of time he spent in front of the television and computer screen. When she heard about the Y’s day camp at a nearby park she decided to give it a try in hopes of providing him support and the opportunity to unplug from technology and develop healthier habits. Through a mixture of fun and educational activities aimed at improving well-being, kids like Joseph experience new adventures, learn new skills, and receive plenty of high-fives along the way.

“I am so thankful for this program. This experience helped keep him active mentally and physically. He is having a lot of fun outdoors with neighborhood friends, and is spending time doing academic activities.” - Maria Jimenez, Proud Mother

This is just one of the many ways the Y helps young people form healthy habits, develop their skills and build strong relationships. The Y isn’t just about having fun, it’s about improving the quality of life. We’re about providing kids a safe environment to help deepen positive values and fill the educational gap when school is out of session. Our programs help youth thrive and grow up to be healthy, caring, and responsible young adults.

“ My favorite part of Y camp is swimming, meeting new people and playing sports. I really like when we play basketball, soccer and frisbee. ”

- Joseph Jimenez, 11

MICHAEL’S STORY

This year was three-year-old Michael’s first time playing in a sports league. He was extremely excited to be out on the field but struggled with learning how to catch. Through persistent practice and endless support from his coaches and teammates, Michael became successful. Michael’s mom says he has played sports at home, but got so much more by interacting with other kids his age in Y sports leagues.

“Y programs help kids gain self-confidence and build positive relationships that lead to teamwork and sportsmanship. Our job as staff is to influence the route of kids’ lives, helping them to realize who they are and all they can achieve.” - Steven Farley, Y-Coach

Y sports is more than just a game, it’s about building character. Our program offers guidance, support and the opportunities that help kids find the courage and confidence to reach their fullest potential. We make a great effort to train staff and coaches to give kids the best experience possible so that more kids like Michael can find their passion for sports.

“Signing him up for Y sports didn’t just keep him active. He made new friends and learned how to socialize with other kids. Participating in this program has helped develop communication skills and patience.” - Demi Asuncion, Sports Mom

LEADERSHIP CAMP The Y’s Back2B.A.C |Believing & Changing| Leadership Break Camp was designed by staff and a group of high school students to equip teens to be leaders in their communities, emphasizing respect, responsibility and safety. The mission of this leadership camp is to empower teens of our county to see themselves as leaders and give them the tools to make positive changes in their community.

In this program, youth leaders met with Y Staff to brainstorm ideas and discuss activities they could implement in camp. The program includes setting personal goals, educational workshops and special service projects. This year they created the Hey Stockton Project. Students were photographed with positive messages they personally wrote to our city. The project was part of our youth’s efforts to strengthen the foundation of our community through the power of a short message.

“This break camp was an avenue for students from local high schools to come together and share their similarities and differences. They learned how to celebrate them in an inclusive way. It’s inspiring to see them develop leadership skills as they strive to positively lead their peers.” - John Acosta, Outreach Coordinator

The Y is more than just day camps, we’re about togetherness. We believe in opportunities and experiences that allow youth to stay safe and connected. Our programs build strong minds and bodies that give parents peace of mind in knowing their kids are making positive choices.

WE ALL NEED THE YToday, more than ever, we all need the Y. Kids and teens need academic support, positive role models and a safe place to build a healthy foundation for the future. Adults need support and guidance to live a healthier lifestyle, eat better and reduce the incidence of chronic disease.
